Camping gear solution This year we have thanks to Bence the possibility to order your camping gear and get it delivered to the festival. For now, we have just added a tab to the family info sheet where you can make your interest known. Once we have sorted out the rest, a way of payment and ordering will be supplied. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to the admins or Bence.
Helper groups As of now, we have opened up the helper groups for a few of the positions you can express an interest in through the Info Gathering questionnaire, so if you’re interested in helping the Sziget family be sure to express your interest there. We are looking for members to join our sponsor, design, and activity helpers teams, for example. These teams will be helping the Sziget family admin to get everything done for the Sziget family. We will need Sziget Family Veterans to be the link between the team and the admins who will see that things get done and all contribute. Any Sziget family member who has been with us for at least one festival and is known by at least one of the Sziget family admins will be seen as a Sziget family Veteran.
We are as well looking for social media moderators, all Sziget family Veterans are eligible. You can show your interest by filling it in on the Info Gathering Form.
Sziget Family on Tour Besides earlier mentioned new groups you might have noticed “Sziget Family on Tour groups” being added to the community. The idea is that Veteran Sziget family members can request to create a group for an internationally known event they are attending and would like Sziget family members to join them. Alexander Semenov, Editor-in-Chief of App2Top - Eugene, hello! Look, since December, I wanted to talk to the Cascadeur team on the topic of graphical neural networks. By the way, how do you feel about them in general?
Eugen Dyabin
Eugene Dyabin, founder and chief producer of Cascadeur - We treat them with great interest and even use them in our own development. Speaking globally, I do not share the panic about the sudden technological revolution with the disappearance of many professions. In December, Cascadeur had an official worldwide release after a year of beta. What challenges did you face as a service after that?

There were a lot of questions, but the number of Pro subscribers remained the same for now, and it's not so easy to scale them - they need to be well-versed in the program and technical details.

You're probably collecting feedback. Based on it, what are users usually missing in Cascadeur today?
Eugene - Users are missing thousands of little things, and it's impossible to do everything at once. So we have to prioritize those features that we think are most requested or most important. There are regular but complex requests like facial animations or blendshapes that need to be done sooner or later, but so far, we just don't have enough human resources.
As for our main theme - physics - many users expect ragdoll, collisions and interaction with the environment. Our AI AutoPhysics specializes in correcting dynamic balance in movements, correcting trajectory and rotation in jumps, and adding secondary movement - an by that greatly improves the quality of animation and speeds up work on it. So far, though, there isn't the possiblity to push off walls, climb ledges, or interact with other characters. But we are actively working on that as well.
Some users have complained about the awkwardness of using the character's fingers, because you have to rotate each finger limb individually. But with the 2023.1 updates, we'll be adding automatic finger positioning - a smart rig that makes it very easy to control fingers with multiple controllers.
When I saw what the Stable Diffusion - ControlNet - Blender bundle was capable of, I immediately thought of Cascadeur. Unlike Blender, it is focused on posing, and I am sure that its entry threshold is less than that of Blender (and it is definitely more convenient than the basic functionality of ControlNet). In this regard, the question is: is it worth waiting for SD support in Cascadeur?
Eugene - We immediately thought of it too! And not only we. However, only we have the most convenient tool for controlling the pose of the figure, suitable for beginners and amateurs. We just need to add a neural rendering based on Stable Diffusion, which will turn a 3D model into a finished 2D image in any style. We're already working on that.
We've always wanted to reach a wider audience, but the problem with Cascadeur is that it doesn't provide a finished end product; it's just a link in the production chain. But Neurorendering can remove that barrier for a broad audience, especially in the mobile version of Cascadeur. You download the mobile app, set a relatively natural pose with AutoPosing, choose the camera angle, upload an image of a character, and get that character in the pose you want from the angle you want. This gives much more creative control over the outcome than is possible with a text description. So far we're only talking about images, but one day we'll get to videos, and that's when Cascadeur's advantages will be in full effect.
The first neural networks capable of making videos are already appearing. In two or three years and, most likely, we will see the first full-fledged short films. But, will they be built on the principle of text-to-animation or on the principle of text+animation-to-animation, where an animated mockup will also act as a promt?
Eugene - So far, I am skeptical that in the near future neural networks will be able to generate high-quality 3d animation without relying on physical simulations. We consider text-to-animation as a primary draft that we can clean, correct poses and physics – and get high-quality animation that the user can edit using our tools. I can't imagine how, without additional control, you can get the necessary result from the text alone, except in the most trivial cases.
If you add video neuro rendering to this, which will become possible sooner or later, then the tool turns out to be quite magical. You describe the idea in your own words, get a realistic enough version, edit it and at the output, you have a ready-made video with the right character in any style. But so far, this is all a concept, and implementation is still far away.
Cascadeur itself was built on the basis of neural networks.In other words, you have been in this topic for a long time. However, have you used them only as part of training your service? Or have you experimented with it somewhere (in other areas)?
Eugene - First of all, I want to note that so far, there are more physics in Cascadeur than neural networks, and this is the main difference from most of the solutions we know for generating animation. We started using neural networks a few years ago and achieved the greatest success in the AutoPosing tool, which helps to make a natural pose with the least amount of user actions.
If we talk about our company Nekki as a whole, neural networks have been used in other projects for different tasks. As an example, I can name the bots in Shadow Fight 4: Arena. They have been trained with real player battle recordings and are able to control different characters using their special techniques and tactics characteristic of these characters.
Many animations in Cascadeur are done like this: a video clip is loaded into the program as a template, according to which the animator reproduces key frames. How realistic is it within the framework of your service to implement a model that will be ready to make a draft animation based on video alone? Are you working in this direction?
Eugene - Yes, we are working on it - it's something like a video mocap. Already in the version 2023.1 of Cascadeur there will be the first alpha version of this feature. It is not yet possible to achieve perfect quality, but as a reference animation draft, in which there are at least key poses and timings, this can save a lot of time. We will further develop and optimize this feature. It works slowly on the client computer, so in the long run, we need to transfer it to the server – then we will be less limited by the user's hardware performance.
Back to business: now people are saying that investors want to invest like crazy in AI. Have you had that experience? What are these investors waiting for? And do they understand that they are essentially competing with Microsoft, Google and Adobe in this space?
Eugene - I think there is no competition here with such giants. Large companies invest in the technology itself, and small companies and startups try to use this technology in different areas. Even we don't develop our neural rendering or video mockup from scratch but use available libraries and models that we configure and retrain for our tasks. I have the impression that investment in such projects will now increase sharply. Cascadeur's development is fully funded by Nekki, but we are also open to proposals.
By the way, did you expect such attention to neural networks that they received after the popularization of MJ, SD and ChatGPT?
Eugene- A few years ago, we already understood that the future lies in neural networks and their implementation in various tools, so we began to recruit data scientists and engage in research and development of our tools in order to be ready for the coming revolution. As far as we're concerned, we think of AI as an assistant that speeds up the work of an animator who knows what he wants. Motion detection based on reference, autoposing, autophysics, neurorendering - all of these are primarily designed to shorten the time between the idea and the result, but at every stage, the animator has full control and can make any changes. I think that by the end of the year, we will already be able to introduce new AI features.
And two technical questions: when I familiarized myself with the limitations of the free version, I found that the user can only export models with "300 images and 120 joints". For those who are not familiar with the animation, explain how much is it?
Eugene - The idea behind the restrictions is to allow amateurs and indie developers to use Cascadeur for free without sacrificing important features.300 frames at 30 frames per second is 10 seconds. Here's a great story about an entrepreneur crushing it an unglamorous, unsexy industry: porta-potty rental.
Pooping is a great equalizer. No matter who you are — you, me, the King of England, the President of the United States, and the person who does the President’s dry cleaning — at some point in the last day or two, we’ve all had to sit down and perform this most basic of bodily functions.
(If you haven’t, please see a doctor urgently, or at the very least, eat more fibre.)
And when people have been doing something for thousands of years — eating out, building homes, swimming, watching plays, and yes, pooping — there’s probably a profitable business in that niche.
That brings us to Gary Mead, the poop millionaire of Chelmsford, Essex, here in the UK.
Gary has built Euroloo, his porta-potty rental business, into a company with revenue of about £9m and profit of £1m. Renting porta-potties.
How has he built this business?
Gary’s story begins in the late 90s. At the tender age of 22, he started a small property management company in his home town of Chelmsford, Essex, about 30 miles northeast of London. According to his LinkedIn profile, he grew it every year for five years in a row, achieved profitability, and sold it. A successful exit by the age of 27 — not bad at all.
Possibly just to prove it wasn’t luck, Gary then started a small property management company in his home town of Chelmsford, Essex. He grew it every year for three years in a row, achieved profitability, and sold it. Again.
(If you take nothing else from this post, learn this: if Gary Mead ever sells you a property management company, make sure you include a non-compete clause.)
As a result, at just 30 years old, Gary had two successful exits under his belt. Likely holding some capital and a well-earned degree from the University of Hard Knocks, Gary scouted around for the next chapter in his career.
What next for this intrepid entrepreneur? Go for the property management three-peat? Start a SaaS business? Rest on his laurels and start a coaching business?
Not for young Gary. No, Gary saw his future paved with brown gold.
In 2003, Gary Mead founded Euroloo. Euroloo rents porta-potties to you, for a fee, including drop-off, pick-up, and weekly servicing.
This is what Mike Rowe would call a Dirty Job. When these porta-potties are dropped off on site on day one, they’re clean. When they’re picked up again on day seven, they are not. Someone has to make them clean again before renting them to the next customer.
That’s both a blessing and a curse. It’s a curse because, you know, you have to clean up poop. For more detail on this subject, check out this article from the wonderfully named company Poles and Holes:
“A good pair of gloves and a spray bottle full of cleaner is all it really takes to keep a porta-potties looking like new!”
It’s a blessing because grads from Harvard Business School and the LSE don’t want to go into this business. It’s not glamorous, it’s not sexy, and you probably don’t get admiring looks when you talk about it at the dinner table.
That’s great, because you don’t want to be competing against HBS and LSE grads. You want to compete, as Nick Huber says, with the type of person making a lot of money and using a fax machine. You are more likely to find those people in an industry like porta-potties. And with some smart use of technology, you can out-compete them.
SEO works with poop too
Euroloo are doing a couple of things you don’t usually see from companies in industries like this.
Firstly, they’re putting time and money into paid search. If you google “portaloo hire [city]” you’ll see them come up (at least in the UK). I did this for my city, Nottingham, and Euroloo are #2 in the sponsored search results, and they’re also #2 in the organic search results.
If I click through on mobile, I’m taken to a landing page, that includes the city name, and a phone number with a local area code.
But wait! If I google “portaloo hire Manchester,” they’re the #2 sponsored result again. If I click through, I’m taken to a different landing page, that mentions a different city, with a different local phone number, which makes them look like a local Manchester business.
This is a level of tech and internet marketing that you honestly just don't see it blue collar industries like this. Definitely makes them stand out. And it's not that hard to do either.
Is there money in porta-potties?
Short answer: yes.
Euroloo are based in the UK so a lot of their company financials are public info. I dove into Euroloo’s financial statements to see what I could learn.
They don't publish a full P&L because they're so small, but their retained earnings -- i.e. the total cumulative profit in the business -- went up by £871k in 2022.
That means that after any dividends paid, Euroloo made £871k profit.
The UK corporate tax rate is 19%, and £871k is the after-tax profit, meaning the pre-tax profit must be £1.075m.
I also estimated their revenue based on the accounts receivable. Euroloo are selling to trade customers, probably on credit terms, so those construction crews and event management teams are paying for their porta-potties after they’ve used them.
On 31st March 2022 they had £422.8k outstanding in accounts receivable. That includes 20% VAT (UK sales tax) that they can’t count as revenue, so if we strip that out, we're left with a figure of £352k.
Guessing that their customers are on 14 day credit terms, then you do 352k / 14 * 365
= £9.2m annualised revenue.
Lastly, just for fun, I got a quote from Euroloo to rent my own porta-pooty.
The minimum rental period is 4 weeks at £195. That works out as £48.75 per week.
If their revenue is around £9.2m and each toilet rents for an average of £48.75 per week, we come up with a total of 188,438 toilet hire weeks per year.
I'm guessing each toilet is in use 90% of the time to account for time spent picking up, cleaning, and delivering. That means they need about 4000 porta-potties.
Their financials say they've spent £3.2m on fixed assets, which means each toilet costs around £800 each.
This also tells us that the real business here isn’t buying expensive assets and renting them out. Porta-potties are about £800 each, and you can rent them for £48.75 a week. Your payback period is less than 6 months.
So this is really a logistics and distribution business. The trick here is making sure that your 4,000 porta-potties are on site, earning income, as much as possible.
The secret sauce
So our master of poop, Gary Mead, has a business with around £9m in revenue, a fleet of around 4,000 portaloos, netting him at least £900k a year, while employing 93 people in the process.
What I really love is how Gary describes the secret sauce. The engine of growth. It’s word of mouth and repeat business. How do they drive that word of mouth? What ensures their incredible reputation?
Gary's LinkedIn page simply says:

I love the simplicity. These principles are not rocket science. Euroloo is a phenomenal example of, as Charlie Munger says, “taking a simple idea, and taking it seriously.”
So you can get rich following the Euroloo playbook:
  1. Pick an unglamorous industry.
  2. Focus on operational and customer excellence.
  3. Layer in some technology.
  4. Keep at it for 20 years.
That’s what Gary Mead has been doing since 2003. Over that time he's built an incredible business worth millions that provides a great living for him, his family, and his team. I love to see it. Anyone could do this. It’s not easy, but it is simple.

Hello there. Today I'm going to talk about one of the most controversial cases of a wrongful conviction in recent UK criminal history, the 1999 Clydach Murders.
The Victim's Murders.
In the early morning hours of June 27 1999, the bodies of Dorris Dawson, 80, her daughter Amanda Power, 34, and her granddaughters Katie, 10, and Emily, 8, were found in their burned out home in Kelvin Road, Clydach which is a village located in the Principality of Swansea in South Wales. The victims were discovered dead when firefighters were called to put out a fire. It is believed that two fires were set one around Midnight and another a few hours later, both in an attempt to conceal the crimes. All four women were found to have been beaten in the head with a piece of lead piping that had become somewhat of a toy to the young girls, who liked to twirl it around like a baton. Dorris was killed in her bed, while Amanda (better known as Mandy) and her daughters were killed on the landing.
Neighbour Rosemary Jones says she was woken up when she heard a car approach the house around 1am, but assumed it was Mandy returning home. However, she now believes this could have been the killer returning back to set fire to the house after murdering the family. There was no sign of forced entry to the house, which led detectives to believe it was someone the family knew. Among the evidence was a blood-soaked sock police believe was used as a glove, and a gold chain that appeared to have been pulled off the killer in a fight with Mandy. Now remember thos gold chain because I'm going to talk about it later on.
The Investigation and the suspect David Morris.
The vicious death sparked one of the most expensive and extensive investigations in the history of the South Wales police. Morris, 38 at the time of his arrest, lived in the nearby town of Craig Cefn Parc, about a mile away from the Powers' home. He was taken in by police 18 months after the murders, when it was reported the gold chain found at the scene was his. Morris had no alibi for his whereabouts at the time of the murders, and frequently changed his story when questioned by Police. He claimed he spent that day getting drunk watching the rugby at a local pub, where he also had a row with his girlfriend who then stormed off home. He remained to continue drinking.
Morris states he left at 11.30pm and decided to stay at his parents, starting a potential five-mile walk through country roads to get to them. He then changed his mind, returning to his own house by 4.30am. However, these timings fit in perfectly with the murders taking place, and witnesses at the pub claim they overheard him bad-mouthing Mandy, calling her an "old cow" and an "unfit mother". It was also claimed that he had taken amphetamines during his time at the pub. During his initial interview, he said the gold chain wasn't his, but was similar to one he had broken about two weeks later while working on a building site. He later changed his story when his cousin, Eric Williams, said Morris had asked him for money to buy a chain similar to the one he had lost, and he had bragged that he'd slept with Mandy the Friday before the murders, leaving the chain there.
Morris said he did have sex with Mandy and asked for money for the chain, but only to affirm his innocence rather than hide his guilt. At the time, he was a father to two daughters, and was living with his girlfriend, and didn't want to be found out as a cheater. He also wanted a similar chain to evade suspicion that the one at the crime scene was his. His rapidly changing story put him in poor favour with the jury, who saw the discussion at the pub and the chain as evidence of his guilt. Morris had also previously attacked someone, hitting him with a blunt instrument around the head, but it was later dismissed as the jury was persuaded he acted in self-defence. After being convicted once, Morris successfully fought for a retrial, and was convicted again. During that trial, the prosecution produced evidence via phone records proving he was at home at the time he claimed to be sleeping with Mandy. This in turn threw out the reason why his chain would be at the home. In October 2021, after a new independent investigation into the murders was launched, the police ruled the bloodied sock contained 'a scientific link' with Morris. "I hope this now provides closure for those most affected by the murders," the police said in a video released on Twitter. By this time, Morris had died in prison.
The Powers family maintain to this day, given the evidence they've seen in court, that Morris is the man responsible for the death of Dorris, Mandy, Katie and Emily. Martyn Lloyd-Evans, senior investigating officer of the investigation, tells Murder In The Valleys he has "no doubt in his mind" about Morris being the killer. "This case has been looked at and looked at and looked at and explored, and I'm puzzled that people can't see Morris for what he is," he said. "Everyone wants to be an armchair detective but they don't know the facts."
Wrongfully Convicted?
Despite the evidence placed against him by the prosecution, and his double conviction, there is an equal amount of evidence to suggest Morris was not guilty of the crimes. First, Morris was never seen in or near the vicinity of Mandy's home by any witnesses that evening. Second, despite a large amount of searching, there was never any definitive DNA evidence that he was in Mandy's home. Even the bloodied sock has been noted as a 'scientific link', with Steve Carey of Devon and Cornwall police stating in a video posted on Twitter that "the outcome of the forensic assessment has not established any information that undermines the conviction of David Morris". It is added the incomplete mixed Y-STR result is "as expected as if Morris had contributed to it". But South Wales Police have refused to release the report regarding the DNA to his defence team, which despite his death in August 2021, is continuing to fight for his exoneration. They have also refused to state exactly how conclusive the DNA evidence actually is on the sock (ie. whether it's definitive proof or if it wouldn't stand up in court).
His DNA wasn't found on the gold chain either, however forensics determined there was 'brick dust and green paint chips' within the links. Mostly, there is no determined motive as to why he would murder an entire family, with all evidence proving, at best, circumstantial. The prosecution successfully argued Morris 'flew into a fit of rage' after Mandy had rejected his sexual advances, but there was male DNA found at the crime scene, including on the murder weapon that again did not belong to Morris.
South Wales Police had also been coming under scrutiny for the number of criminal convictions that had been overturned in their jurisdiction, and their conduct throughout high-profile investigations. This included the Newsagent Three of 1987, where three men were wrongfully convicted and spent 11 years in prison for the murder of a newsagent, and five Black men wrongfully convicted for the murder of a woman in 1988. Due to the brutality of the murders, South Wales Police were under enormous pressure to find and convict Mandy's murderer. The alternative suspects came from within their own ranks – officers (and twin brothers) Stuart and Stephen Lewis, and Stephen's wife Alison. She was having an affair with Mandy at the time of the murder and Stuart was the first senior officer on the scene of the crime. However, again all members of the Lewis family similarly maintain their innocence in all aspects of the case, with Stephen claiming he had no idea about his wife's affair or homosexuality until after the murders went public.
Stephen and Alison were at one point arrested, but were released without charge after four days of questioning. There was not enough evidence to connect them to the crime and the Lewises were never charged. They were eventually ruled out as suspects in 2001.
Where is David Morris now?
Morris died after serving 22 years in HMP Long Lartin, Worcestershire on August 20, 2021. His cause of death was never officially confirmed. He had spent the rest of his life maintaining his innocence and appealing his conviction. In 2007, his whole-life sentence – which means no possibility for parole – was quashed with a minimum 32-year sentence put in its place. In January 2021, it was decided the police should re-examine the case. Murder In The Valleys follows the ensuing year of re-examination.
My thoughts on the case. Personally I'm sitting on the fence about whether Morris is guilty or not. However one thing I am certain of is that I do not believe that South Wales Police proved Morris's guilt (if he did do it) beyond reasonable doubt.

Kneejerk United: End of season review & Survey results
Hi there Kneejerkers, last week we asked for your feedback on our season, specifically focusing on our move to the KneejerkUnited subreddit in March this year. The results have been collected and I can now share it all with you, going over the highs & lows, and what the plans are for next year.
This post is quite long so a summary is written at the bottom, with a second short survey for those who are happy to give us their feedback. Thank you in advance!

Part 1: Season overview

We unfortunately had our worst ever final position since KJU was founded 5 years ago, finishing with an overall rank of 845,195. We had a dreadful start to the season, only entering the top 2 million after wildcarding in GW9, and only entered the top 1 million after our 2nd wildcard in GW27. At our peak we were ranked 427,644 in GW31, but an uninspiring final few weeks saw us fall back down at the end. Fortunately we still finished in the top 1m players, but it's certainly not a season to remember fondly.
The first graph below has extra markings for important points in our season:
  • Green: GW9 wildcard
  • Yellow: GW17 world cup
  • Red: GW20 triple captain
  • Pink: GW27 wildcard
  • Grey: GW28 move to the new subreddit
  • Blue: GW29 bench boost
  • Orange: GW32 free hit
Since the season as a whole was pretty lacklustre for us, I don't think we can say that moving to the KneejerkUnited subreddit made an overall positive or negative impact on our performance. Shortly after the move we were doing well, but then it started going wrong again, and with only 10 gameweeks worth of data, there's not a huge sample to go from anyway.
All we can say in that regard for now is that, we will be staying in our new home next season, and hopefully now that more people are aware of the subreddit and how it works, we will see better results next year.

Part 2: Survey results & analysis

Firstly we would like to thank everyone who took their time to fill in the survey and give us their feedback on the positive and negative aspects to KJU. We want this subreddit and the team to be as good as possible and are always welcome to ideas and criticisms!
We are happy to report that 86% of you have enjoyed being a part of the new subreddit. 97% of respondents to the survey were subscribed to it, and 69% of you have the notifications turned on.
Analysing these numbers a bit further we can see that, of the 14% of people who didn't enjoy the move to our own subreddit, 20% hadn't subscribed to it, and 60% didn't turn on notifications. Doing these things would make you feel more connected to the process and the team, and I would highly recommend to everyone that wants to be a part of KJU to do these things.
We then wanted to know how the new notification system was going. Before moving to KneejerkUnited, there were 7 notification groups and we would send a link in the groups to notify when new posts came out. One advantage of the new subreddit though, is the freedom and automation it provides to us. Turning on notifications should notify people when new posts are published, cutting out some of our work.
Fortunately we can say that 67% of you found the new system to be either easy or very easy, 22% found it to be partly working, with 11% saying that being notified of new posts was difficult.
Looking at the numbers closer showed us however, that all the people who had difficulties being notified of new posts hadn't subscribed to receive notifications for new posts, and only 25% of people who found the notifications to be 'so-so' had notifications turned on.
The clear solution to this therefore seems to be to subscribe to the subreddit and turn on notifications: 92% of people who had subscribed with notifications on found the system to be working well. To the 8% of people with notifications turned on who only find the system to be 'so-so', I unfortunately don't know what to tell you. The system works for me and most others, so maybe there are further settings with your reddit account that are preventing the notifications from coming through?
We have had a few questions asking how to turn notifications on, so here are some guides to help out:
Next, we wanted to know your opinion regarding the captain and bench posts.
A whopping 92% of you were happy with the format (despite multiple comments elsewhere asking for changes to the system - I'll address that a bit later). The 8% who said here that they didn't like the new captain system were also unhappy with the new subreddit as a whole and didn't leave specific feedback on how to improve the captain polls in the future.
We have always seen fewer people voting on the bench polls compared to the captain polls, both before switching to KneejerkUnited and after, and wanted to know if there was something specific we could change here.
29% of you voted for the suggestion that we would write the players in the comments and the 4 most upvoted players would be on the bench for that week, and 9% of you voted for other suggestions - which were essentially to have a separate bench thread.
Surprisingly however, 62% of people wanted to keep going with the same system for the bench polls, so we won't change anything to this regard for now, but we will continue to bear this issue and the potential solutions in mind.
Alongside these yes/no questions, we asked some open-ended questions and allow you to write your thoughts freely and let us know any specific feedback you might have. Starting with the positives, it is clear that the main benefit you saw of the subreddit was the ease in finding KJU posts and being able to filter out other fpl related content.
There were a lot less comments and engagement in general, which was to be expected after only just starting in a new location, and this was seen as a positive in the sense of less trolls are commenting now, since only those who are interested in the team will see the posts.
The other main benefit was that there is more freedom to discuss general team ideas outside of the strict transfer & captain/bench posts and that there is more flexibility to how the team was managed. As 'managers' for the team, we also strongly agree with this point and it is one of the main reasons the subreddit is being used, so we are happy to see this being recognised by your comments.
We also asked what aspects of the subreddit you would like to keep the same for next year, and there weren't really any specific answers, just that you want it to be generally the same. The interesting comments regarding the next season came from the following question, asking for what improvements could be made.
Moving onto the negatives, and, also as we expected, the biggest drawback of the new subreddit was the reduction in engagement. There are far fewer comments on the posts now than there were before, and fewer votes on the captain & bench polls. This was also heavily discussed when we asked for improvements for next season, since the most commented change was to post more on the FantasyPL subreddit - which we will commit to doing. The number of subscribers to the subreddit has grown steadily since we started using it, and over time I am sure it will continue to grow, but we will also be more active in posting and 'advertising' the team to involve more active users.
The next most commented aspect of the subreddit that people didn't like is that, as occurs all through Reddit, older comments generally get more upvoted than newer ones, even if the newer comment is a better idea. There isn't a huge amount we can do to address this, but we can try turning on Competition Mode on transfer suggestion posts. This would hide the number of upvotes each comment has and display them in a random order, so that people aren't as easily influenced to just vote on whatever comment is already top when they look at a post.
The final two issues people had with KneejerkUnited was that it was hard to use and that the notification system didn't work. The notification system I have already spoken about - we would recommend to turn on notifications, since that has worked for 92% of people, and potentially you need to check your other account settings if it still isn't working. If you are then having difficulties with the subreddit and interacting with the posts then please contact us and we are more than happy to help. We find everything easier to manage on the new subreddit but everyone has to start somewhere, so if website functionality is an issue for you then let us know so we can make it a more enjoyable experience for you too!
Regarding other improvements for next season that weren't already covered, people want us to make posts a bit earlier to capture earlier price rises and have more discussions in general before making transfers. We implemented a weekly team discussion thread which was always stickied at the top of the KneejerkUnited page, but maybe you were unaware of this or its functionality? Ideally we can have discussions there, potentially instigating early transfers at the start of the week, then toward the end of a week we would have a separate transfers thread if needed, to cement our plans going into the following gameweek.
This is also something that should hopefully increase in functionality if user numbers and general engagement increase. Also, you are always free to make your own posts in the new subreddit! If you have a burning idea or transfer suggestion, we invite you to share your thoughts and we can all discuss there. You don't need to wait for one of us to create a post if you don't want to.
Suggestions for a separate poll for a vice captain came up a few times, however 92% said earlier that they were happy with how the captain/vice captain polls are being done. For now we plan to leave the captain choices the same as we currently do it, but are welcome to a discussion or changing this if there is high demand for something new.
The final improvement comments were from people asking if wildcard planning could be made easier to follow - and I'm not sure how in all honesty. Wildcards are complicated enough with your own team, but for a community team, it can be a mess with short turnaround times. The only advice I can give for now would be to always look for the latest post when we are building a wildcard / free hit team, since replying to old posts means we have already moved on from that decision, and your suggestion won't be looked at.
As part of the survey we also asked what area of the world you live in, to give us an idea of what time zone people want the posts to be. 64% of respondents are from Europe with a further 8% in Africa, with similar time zones. Since the Premier League is in England, and we are also all based in Europe, we will keep our posting schedule as it has been (which generally means no post before 7am and no post later than 10PM GMT). There may be occasional exceptions for late news or so, but there won't be much activity outside of this general time frame.
This means the 28% of you living in North America & Asia are unfortunately getting the short-end of the straw here, but there's nothing we can do about that.

Part 3: Short summary

  • This was the worst year for Kneejerk United history. We only broke into the top 1m players in GW27, then created our new subreddit in GW28. The poor finish therefore can't be attributed to the creation of the subreddit and we will remain on KneejerkUnited next season
  • The survey was posted just to the KneejerkUnited subreddit, and 86% of you who answered said you have been happy with the move here from the main FantasyPL subreddit
  • Of those who haven't enjoyed it, a large portion hadn't turned on notifications. We would highly recommend everyone who wants to follow the community team to subscribe to the KneejerkUnited subreddit and subscribe to notifications. This has worked well for 92% of people
  • Guides on how to turn on notifications are here: Website, iPhone, Android
  • Despite some calls to separate the captain & vice captain polls, we will be leaving this the same for now - but may change in the future if necessary. The same applies for how the bench polls are conducted
  • The biggest benefit of the subreddit was that all KJU related posts are together in one place and other fpl related content was filtered out
  • Although non-transfer related discussions were taking place since moving to the new subreddit, there are calls to further increase this, and have earlier posts to capture early price rises. There is a weekly discussion post every Monday to have general team discussions, and you are welcome to create your own posts as well
  • Increasing user engagement was the biggest call for improvement next year, and we will focus on cross-posting more things to the FantasyPL subreddit to attract more users to join us at KneejerkUnited
  • We will also try turning on competition mode in transfer suggestion posts to stop the influence of older comments being more upvoted compared to newer, better comments

Part 4: Final survey

Finally, we would like to hear from those of you reading this from FantasyPL. There were lots of you engaging with Kneejerk United before we moved to KneejerkUnited, but a number of you did not join the new subreddit when we made the switch in March, and overall engagement is down.

From our point of view, we thoroughly enjoy doing it all and thank you for your appreciation! Although the end result wasn't what we were hoping for, in the end it was still a bit of fun.
