2023.06.07 03:42 its_vf Michael Barlow: How Fremantle Dockers’ best 22 could look after recent re-signings and who’s next

https://thewest.com.au/sport/fremantle-dockers/michael-barlow-how-fremantle-dockers-best-22-could-look-after-recent-re-signings-and-whos-next-c-10889717
Nat Fyfe is undoubtedly a top-two Docker of all-time, while Michael Walters tucks in just behind in the top-10.
Some eyebrows were raised when the duo were given two-year contract extension by the club over the bye week but their names above are synonymous with Fremantle and I believe their new deals work on all levels:
  1. Loyalty: To have these champions locked down will eradicate inevitable scuttlebutt around them leaving. It shows player-club connection. I love it.
  2. Leadership and depth: In 2025, when this squad is in its sweet spot, Walters and Fyfe may well be players 12 to 24 on the list and the heavy lifting will be on the shoulders of others. Their cameos, role playing and invaluable leadership will complement the make-up of the 2024-25 Dockers.
  3. Belief: Fyfe’s recommitment indicates his strong belief in the trajectory of this team. Fyfe is driven by team success and he hasn’t personally played in finals since 2015 after missing last year’s drought-breaking campaign with injury.
Suitors for Fyfe across the next couple of seasons would have been apparent, in particular clubs feeling they are in the premiership window. To remain with a club with only the two finals matches in the past seven seasons indicates belief.
Barlow’s 2025 Dockers crystal ball (age at start of 2025)
B: Walker (22) Pearce (29) Ryan (29)
HB: Chapman (23) Cox (26) Young (24)
C: Aish (29) Brayshaw (25) Trade recruit (Jeremy Sharp?)
HF: Frederick (25) Jackson (23) Schultz (27)
F: Treacy (22) Amiss (21) Switkowski (28)
FOL: Darcy (26) Serong (24) Johnson (22)
INT: Fyfe (33) Walters (34) Banfield (27) Clark (24)
SUB: Erasmus (21)
Fremantle was one of the most active players in the 2022 trade period with Luke Jackson the headline act.
Now that the teething process has been completed, he is showing that he will be a game changer for the Dockers.
With the recommitment to Fyfe and Walters, it would suggest involvement in trade periods beyond this season will likely be more limited. It also plants career mortality on other tremendous servants to the Dockers since the 2017 rebuild began.
Four players who have been instrumental in developing the next wave in their own positions are Joel Hamling, Travis Colyer and Nathan Wilson and Matt Taberner.
A unique nature of professional team sport is that you develop and assist players in your position that will eventually take your spot.
Hamling has battled injury over recent years.
A premiership Western Bulldog in 2016, he is now acting as depth for Alex Pearce and Brennan Cox and more of a break glass in case of emergency player that has had great influence on the development of Cox and Luke Ryan.
Colyer has speed and skill. Similar to Hamling, he has developed players such as Lachie Schultz and Michael Frederick. Both have gone past him in 2023.
There is room for another speedy small forward in the Dockers front half but it would seem the commitment to Walters may compromise Colyer beyond his current tenure.
Wilson has been passed by Brandon Walker, Hayden Young and Heath Chapman.
Taberner is the one with more potential to remain a Docker through until 2025.
He has been the mainstay key forward since the retirement of Matthew Pavlich and while his form is often sporadic, there will be teething issues around the Dockers other inexperienced key forwards in the next 24 months.
Jye Amiss, Josh Treacy and Jackson are still raw in a position that can swallow young players whole.
Taberner may act as the patch work to assist and regularly cover when one or more of the above are misfiring.
That is of course if he doesn’t seek more guaranteed opportunities elsewhere.
The situation of Hamling, Colyer, Wilson and Taberner is a vulnerable position to be in at an AFL club. Depth of character is tested in these moments.
And as for the gaps coach Justin Longmuir will look to address across the next two seasons?
In the best 22 for 2025, Matt Johnson looms as a threat to the current midfield pole acquired by Jaeger O’Meara.
O’Meara, into his 30s by 2025, may become vulnerable.
The role of Blake Acres from 2022 is another I’m pinpointing as needing to be filled.
Liam Henry hasn’t been able to grab a hold of that spot and finds himself in the WAFL at the moment.
Henry’s talent is evident and if he can’t break into the Docker’ side regularly in the back half of 2023, he may be wearing alternate colours next season.
Jeremy Sharp at Gold Coast is the WA winger that was targeted by Fremantle in the 2022 trade period.
Still out of favour at the Suns, Sharp is a real watch on his landing spot in 2024 and beyond.
Ethan Hughes has handled the role well for large parts of 2023.
Every decision that is made at this time of year has domino effects in AFL clubs.
The Walters and Fyfe extensions are the right call. The dominoes will fall as the list management team mulls over their next move.

SF/IDP Salary Cap League - Push all in, or be patient one more year?
I have plenty of salary cap cash in hand, and 4 1sts, 2 2nds, 3 3rds, and 3 4ths over the next two years - do I push all in and trade away those draft picks for aging stars or continue the process one more year?
Team has finished 1st, 6th, 3rd last 3 years.

2023.06.07 00:08 StormTheTrooper Some ramble on ideas for #10

Between this Cato news and a quite nice provocation (not in the bad way) I found in the NBA Draft sub (no reason to tag the guy here, since he's not a Mavs fan and I do not know him at all to start with), I started to think (or rather cope) with the loss of the draft pick and trading for a veteran. If this isn't a smokescreen, I believe we will be diving head first into the "build to win now" scenario. Considering this, I decided to play a little bit in Spotrac and see how far could we go in the roster build.
Disclosure, I'm following exclusively the Spotrac simulator, so any mistake cap-wise, send the e-mail to them, eh?
Disclosure #2: we will be hard capped if we use the BAE, so, yeah, no.
Scenario 1
a) DAL sends 10, 2027 FRP, Bertans to the Magic for WCJ
Honestly, WCJ is a secret in the open. He fits well a defense that switches a lot, considering how his feet is light, while he can anchor a defense to an extent. He can shoot from the perimeter, he is a legit amazing screener and a lob threat. He is a do-it-all C, on an amazing deal, that is just 24. Some might wrinkle the nose for trading 2 FRPs for him, but I think it is even kinda cheap. I'm not sure the Magic would do it, but who knows, maybe they want to package 6, 10 and 11. Three lottery picks has a lot of power, enough to either trade up hard if they want Scoot or even trade for an actual star. The deal, honestly, makes sense for both parties if we are to part ways with the pick.
A fun stat. Here's the shooting attempts that Embiid had in the last 3 games he faced WCJ: 9-18, 12-23, 11-33. If you want to say "Well, maybe the Magic has a good defense against Embiid". First, it's Embiid in Orlando, it's pretty much Luka against the Celtics. Second, WCJ did not play one game in that stretch: 18-23 and a 50pt party in 27 minutes.
b) We re-sign Kyrie for the max deal
Really, is there anything to say? If we are going this route, we are going with Kyrie.
c) Renounce the bird rights of Christian Wood
Bye bye, Wood, hope you learn how to play defense and set a screen somewhere else.
d) Sign Jalen McDaniels for the MLE
Now this starts to get interesting. Apparently, if we make those moves, at least according to Spotrac (again, I'm not a cookie smart enough to know the CBA that well to calculate the exceptions), we will have access to the full MLE. This open up the portfolio of players that we can acquire and I believe many will wander towards Dillon Brooks. However, I believe we may have a shot at signing McDaniels for the full MLE. Morey is emotional in his deals and McDaniels was an afterthought in their playoff run. Sure, Nurse is in the house, there may be a renewed interest into him, but there is a shot for him to come to Dallas for the full MLE, specially if we offer him a guaranteed starting role, which he would have. Also, if Philly re-signs Harden, they will probably be touching the 2nd apron, with Maxey's deal looming. Things could get rough.
e) Sign Pinson, Ntilikina and Powell to veteran minimum deals
Yes. They're more than decent depth, bring some locker room chemistry and have spot minutes usage in the court, specially Ntilikina. The whole "People forget about Frank" meme is a think, but Ntilikina playing spot minutes as a defensive specialist is a decent role and he could get more than the veteran minimum deal here.
Tax situation: we would be in the tax here (duh), but 6.3M over the tax. This would trigger the 1st apron, but we would be 10M +- clear of the 2nd apron, where things start to get really ugly.
Possible rotation: Luka/Kyrie/Green/McDaniels/WCJ, with Hardy, Bullock, Maxi and McGee playing an eventual playoff rotation. We can get bigger by rolling with a McDaniels/Maxi/WCJ rotation and bringing Green off the bench. There's some nice flexibility to get bigger or smaller here and WCJ is extremely versatile, enough to fit multiple defensive looks in a similar game.
Scenario 2
a) DAL sends 10, 2027 FRP, Green, Hardy and Bertans to the Raptors for OG Anunoby and Achiuwa
This is Masai we're talking about. If he is to trade Anunoby and take in Bertans' deal, he will demand Hardy. I'm not making judgements here on the trade itself (everyone here knows I want to draft, even trade down in the draft itself), but if you folks wish OG Anunoby, this deal could entice Masai, specially for Green. Yes, I know what Cato said and I know Nico almost sank the Kyrie deal because the Nets wanted Green, but if we are to make a splash, this is the way. We're getting a DPOY-caliber wing and Achiuwa, that can play more than enough spot minutes here. Maybe we could keep Hardy if we took in Boucher instead? I don't know, but we would probably need to send Timmy as salary filler and Masai hates salary fillers that are not on an expiring deal so...a rough price, in general.
b) We re-sign Kyrie for the max deal
Same.
c) Renounce the bird rights of Christian Wood
Same.
d) Sign Brook Lopez for the MLE
We already went through this. The Mavs are very likely to roll with a switchable C instead of a classic one. However, if there is a C that is a perfect fit here, is Brook Lopez. Now, I believe he has a market for more than just the MLE. Since we are trying to take a, uh, positive approach here, let's presume he is lured by just the MLE and decides he had enough of Wisconsin and wants to roll in the Luka ride. I do not need to sell anyone on Lopez, I believe. For the MLE, it is a steal.
e) Sign Pinson, Ntilikina and Powell to veteran minimum deals
Same.
f) Sign Dragic for the veteran minimum
For once, we need another guard to come off the bench. Ljubljana Ultras, rejoice for the Dragon finally arrived in Dallas.
Tax situation: 11.8M deep in the tax, with a potential high OG deal in sight and the need to find a replacement for Timmy in 2 seasons...quite grim. If you guys want a win-or-bust scenario, here it is, because we are touching that 2nd apron soon.
Possible rotation: Luka/Kyrie/OG/Maxi/Brook, with Dragic, Timmy, Bullock and Achiuwa off the bench. A lot of firepower here, not gonna lie. We would need to see more Ntilikina than people are used to, considering the lack of backcourt defense with Green gone, but this would be peak firepower. Luka would actually feel the heat of the obligation to win instead of getting media support due to "lack of teammates". Do I think we have enough to win here? Honestly? No.
I tried to think about other scenarios, but it is way too difficult to evaluate 10 in a vacuum. Feels like too much to trade for Capela, too little to trade for Myles Turner. Guys like Claxton are way overrated and THJ and Bertans, although together combine for a max-level contract, does not warrant the player worthy of one (unless we are receiving Ben Simmons and 21 and 22 without giving up 10, but that's a different deal). Do not think Ayton will be for sale under Vogel, I believe Vogel will make Ayton a focal point of their offense. Too much for Bojan, too little for Keldon Johnson and a laughable joke for Jaylen Brown.
I'm curious to see folks rationale here, because as one (tired) person, I'm sure I missed more than a few scenarios here.

2023.06.06 12:37 boutell New US CHAdeMO chargers in May 2023

Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CHAdeMO chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these monthly reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself (especially my fellow Leaf owners). You can pick other plug types as well.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

2023.06.06 12:32 boutell New US CCS chargers report for May 2023

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

Origins of violin making in Cremona: Amati Family
From the 15th century until today, Cremona in Italy has been the center for the production and restoration of stringed instruments. Its renowned tradition of love and dedication to music has made Cremona famous worldwide. Its glorious origins can be traced back to Andrea Amati, the founder of the Amati family and the pioneer of the Cremonese school of violin making.
Article Source:https://fiddlover.com/blogs/news/origins-of-violin-making-in-cremona-amati-family

The Cremona School of Violin Making

The founder of the Cremonese school of violin-making was Andrea Amati (1505-1577). His descendants and members of his family lineage trained apprentices who became renowned masters of violin making. In addition to the Amati family, this school included the Stradivari family, the Guarneri family, and the German violin maker Jacob Stainer. etc

Andrea Amati: creator of the violin

We may never know for certain about the exact creators of the modern violin. In a book published in 1940 called "Violin and Violinist," Franz Farga stated that Andrea Amati was born in 1535 and suggested that Gasparoda Salò (1542-1609) from the Brescia school might have been one of the inventors of the violin. However, recent discoveries have pushed Andrea's birth year back by thirty years, aligning it with the possible birthplace of the violin in northern Italy. Consequently, contemporary scholars tend to consider Andrea Amati as the creator of the modern violin. However, we do not have concrete information regarding the location and mentorship of his violin-making education, only some speculations and legends.

The "Kurtz" violin by Andrea Amati, which is currently housed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is considered to be the earliest surviving Amati violin to date, crafted around 1560. This violin is part of a set of seven instruments gifted to celebrate the marriage of 14-year-old Elisabeth de Valois and King Philip II of Spain in 1559. Elisabeth was the daughter of Catherine de' Medici and Henry II, and her brother later became the King of France. He commissioned 38 instruments from Andrea Amati, including 24 violins, 6 violas, and 8 cellos. These instruments were adorned with the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the French royal family, and featured intricate designs on the back and sides.
Charles IX
Unfortunately, by the time Andrea Amati crafted these instruments, he had already reached a remarkable level of expertise, and we are unable to see his earlier works or understand his process of experimentation and refinement. This gives the impression that the creation of the violin appeared suddenly as if inspired by a stroke of genius.
Andrea Amati crafted over 200 instruments during his lifetime, but only a few have survived. One of the reasons for this scarcity is that during the 16th century, the music played on the violin was not fully accepted by the Church. In northern Italy, there were even bans on the violin and instances of instruments being destroyed. However, the situation changed completely in the following century.
The surviving instruments by Andrea Amati can be broadly categorized into three types.
King cello
The first type consists of a set of stringed instruments made for King Charles IX of France, adorned with oil paintings and decorations, bearing the royal motto "Pietate et Justitiae." An example of this type is the "King" Cello.
The second type comprises instruments created to celebrate royal marriages, featuring ornamental decorations and inscriptions such as "Quo unico propugnaculo stat stabiq[ue] religio" (By this bulwark alone religion stands and will stand). An example of this type is the "Kurtz" violin.
The third type includes instruments with no decorations at all and those with textual decorations that do not belong to the first two categories.
Andrea Amati ingeniously used four strings and designed the basic shape of the violin, which served as the foundation for subsequent improvements. He is widely regarded as the father of the violin. He established the Amati family, and his craftsmanship did not disappear with his passing. Instead, it was carried on and further developed by his two sons, Antonio Amati (1537 - c. 1607) and Girolamo Amati (1561-1630). They continued the legacy and dominance of the Cremonese stringed instrument-making for over a century, making significant contributions to the evolution of the modern violin pattern.

Antonio Amati and Girolamo Amati: inheritors of violin-making craftsmanship

Antonius & Hieronymus Amati
Antonio Amati (1537-c. 1607) and Girolamo Amati (1561-1630), the two brothers, learned violin making from their father, Antonio Amati, from a young age. They fully inherited their father's craftsmanship and both became renowned master luthiers, collaborating throughout their lives. Their jointly signed works range from 1590 to 1630, bearing the Latinized names "Antonius & Hieronymus Amati." In reality, Antonio had passed away before Girolamo died in 1630.
Neither Andrea Amati nor his sons Antonio and Girolamo took on apprentices, possibly due to their reluctance to pass on their skills and knowledge. Girolamo, his wife, and two daughters were victims of the widespread plague in Cremona in 1630. However, he had a son, Nicola Amati (1596-1684), who continued the family legacy, becoming the master of the workshop and achieving even greater prestige than his ancestors during his career.

Nicola Amati: Promoter of family craftsmanship

Nicola Amati
Nicola Amati (1596-1684) was an incredibly significant master in the history of violin making. It is not only due to his exceptional craftsmanship but also because of his contribution to the development and dissemination of the Amati family's violin-making techniques that the violin achieved its brilliance in later years.
During Nicola Amati's era, the violin family became one of the primary instruments due to the development of opera, the rise of chamber music, and the standardization of symphony orchestras. As a result, the demand for violins increased steadily. The fame of violin-making in Cremona spread over time. Meanwhile, the Amati family's craftsmanship and dedication paid off, as they received a growing number of orders from various Italian duchies and even from distant places. The increasing demand required higher production, but Master Nicola Amati was the sole craftsman, without anyone in the family to assist him.
The increase in orders compelled Master Nicola Amati to make a significant decision by breaking away from the traditional practice of keeping the family's violin-making techniques within the family. He chose to take on apprentices and pass on his craft and knowledge, which had a profound impact on the history of violin making. Among his apprentices were Jacob Stainer, Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737), and Andrea Guarneri (1626-1698), the founder of the Guarneri family. Later, his grandson, Giuseppe Guarneri "del Gesu" (1698-1744), became a master violin maker who rivaled Antonio Stradivari in skill and reputation.

Girolamo (or Hieronymus) Amati II: Last Glory

Violin by Girolamo II Amati Cremona, c.1700
Girolamo (or Hieronymus) Amati II (1649-1740), the eldest son of Nicolò Amati, is believed to have been an underestimated apprentice of Nicolò Amati. He learned the craft and acquired extensive knowledge from his father at a young age, showcasing exceptional violin-making skills evident in his limited body of work. However, it is speculated that due to Nicolò Amati's amassed wealth throughout his lifetime, which was inherited by Girolamo, he led a comfortable life. Additionally, the intense competition in the violin-making industry during that time and possibly other factors may have prevented him from carrying on the family business. After he died in 1740, the Amati family, which had enjoyed over a century of glory, exited the stage of history.

2023.06.05 20:24 jimbobbypaul Ranking the Top 131 FBS Programs of the Last 40 Years: 81. Tulsa

Main hub thread with the full 131 rankings
Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tulsa has the smallest enrollment of any FBS school with just 2,728 undergraduate students according to USNews. That’s only slightly more than my high school.
They’ve managed to do very well for themselves though, as they escaped the bottom 50 on this list and are even a top 20 Group of 5 program on here. I’m not sure where all the fans come from, but they had an average attendance of ~20,000 fans per game in 2022, about 5x the size of their total enrollment.

Tulsa has 6 double-digit win seasons in the last 32 years, with 5 in the last 15. That success, despite 11 seasons with 3 or less wins, puts them all the way up to #81 on the list. Their 8 bowl wins is the most of any team so far, and 5 conference titles is up there as well. If we look at total history, Tulsa’s actually had major historical success, winning 35 conference titles with a 643-526-28 all-time record. All-time draft greats include NFL Hall of Fame WRs Steven Largent and Drew Pearson (undrafted), and QB Gus Frerotte. Consensus AAs were OL Jerry Ostroski in 1991 and LB Zaven Collins in 2020. Zaven was a freak athlete at 6’5 260 lbs, racking up 4 sacks, 4 TFL, 4 INTs, and 2 defensive TDs in just 8 games. He ranked 2nd in the nation in interception return yards, as a LB, in just 8 games!

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 2001 (1-10 overall, 0-8 WAC)
The good news? They beat Indiana State 51-0 in the opener. The bad news? That was their last win for the next 17 games. Tulsa continued their decade-long struggle, having not had a winning season in 10 years. All losses were by 10+ points, including 10-26 to 2-9 UTEP and 27-63 to 3-9 San Jose State in front of a San Jose crowd of just 6,873. To add insult to injury, Tulsa got little brother’d hard by #3 Oklahoma toward the end of the season, losing 0-58 in Norman. The game was available on PPV, which I hope no Tulsa fan paid for. QBs Josh Blankenship and Tyler Gooch split snaps, with Blankenship having the slightly higher passer rating and Gooch being the better runner. Blankenship’s dad, Bill Blankenship, would go on to become Tulsa’s head coach from 2011-14. Gooch took over full time in 2002 and had a much better season than either of them did in 2001, throwing 17 TD to 8 INT. There weren’t many other great players on the roster. OT Kevin Shaffer was drafted in the 7th round after the season and went on to start 93 games for the Falcons/Browns/Bears.
5. 2016 (10-3 overall, 6-2 American)
2016 Tulsa scored on everyone, and let everyone score on them. The offense was RIDICULOUS. Outside of a 3-48 loss to Ohio State (I guess they didn’t score on everyone), they averaged 45.8 PPG, best in the country in 2016. They became the first team in NCAA history to have a 3000+ yard passer, two 1000+ yard rushers, and two 1000+ yard receivers. QB Dane Evans threw for 3348 yards 32 TD 12 INT in his senior season, finishing as Tulsa’s all-time leading passer with 11,680 yards and 84 TD, and between Russell Wilson and Geno Smith as the 39th all-time leading passer in the NCAA. RB D’Angelo Brewer ran for 1435 yards and 7 TD on 5.4 YPC, while RB James Flanders went for 1629 yards and 18 TD on 6.3 YPC. The top receivers were Keevan Lucas (81 catches for 1180 yards and 15 TD) and Joshua Atkinson (78 catches for 1058 yards and 8 TD). Even 4 out of 5 offensive linemen made 1st/2nd team all-conference! Nobody made it on the defensive side, as they gave up 29.8 PPG as a team.
4. 2012 (11-3 overall, 7-1 Conference USA)
After failing to produce a conference championship team with talented 3-year starting QB GJ Kinne, they did it immediately in 2012 with the less productive but steady QB Cody Green. After an opening 23-38 loss to Iowa State, they went on a 7 game win streak with wins over bowl teams Fresno State and Rice. They had a chance to catch a reeling John L Smith-led Arkansas team to get to 8-1 and become ranked, but couldn’t score in the 4th to fall 15-19. After a 41-7 win over Houston, 2 weeks later OT Brian DeShane proposed to his girlfriend before the UCF game, and the team was so inspired they fought to a 23-21 win. A loss to SMU in the final week of the regular season was meaningless for championship aspirations, as Tulsa had already clinched a spot in the C-USA title game. Up against UCF in a rematch, Tulsa tied the game 27-27 on a 54 yard punt return for TD with just 5:04 left, and won 33-27 on a walkoff rushing TD in OT, claiming their first conference title since 2005. They outdid themselves in the bowl, avenging a season-opening loss to Iowa State, this time scoring 24 straight to win 31-17.
Green was steady, with 2592 passing yards and 17 TD 11 INT. The main offense came from the run game, which you might have to double take reading these stats. Alex Singleton, the 6’0 265 lb power back, ran for 800 yards and 24(!!) TD on just 4.0 YPC. Trey Watts, who weighed 75 pounds less, ran for 1108 yards and just 3 TD on 6.0 YPC. The third option was Ja’Terian Douglas, who had 936 rushing yards and 7 TD on a team-high 6.8 YPC. Hilariously, Singleton and Douglas either didn’t want to catch passes or couldn’t, combining for 4 catches for 17 yards. Watts had 34 for 343. WR Keyarris Garrett led the team with 845 receiving yards, and after an up-and-down career, would go on to lead the NCAA in receiving yards 3 years later with 1588. On defense, DL Jared St. John led C-USA with 11.5 sacks, and Deaundre Brown was 3rd in the conference with 17 total TFL.
3. 2010 (10-3 overall, 6-2 Conference USA)
Todd Graham produced some damn good offenses at Tulsa. This was his 3rd season in 4 years averaging 40+ PPG, ranking 6th in the country with 41.4. GJ Kinne, the current Texas State coach, had a great year in his 2nd season as a starter, earning 1st Team All-CUSA with 3650 passing yards 31 TD 10 INT, and leading the team in rushing with 561 yards with 7 TD. An opening loss to East Carolina was heartbreaking, the Hurricanes up 49-45 with seconds left, decided to call a timeout to defend a hail mary…? It backfired, as East Carolina drew up a play and scored to walk off 51-49. A few weeks later they were 3-3, with a disappointing 1-2 conference record. Hoping to compete for the C-USA title, they were now 2 games behind SMU and didn’t hold the tiebreaker. Still, Tulsa continued to fight. In South Bend facing first year head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame, Tulsa somehow held a 28-27 lead in the 4th quarter. Irish QB Tommy Rees drove to the Tulsa 20 in position for a game winning FG, but threw an interception in the end zone to seal a Tulsa win. That’d be a momentum shifter, winning out the rest of the year with wins over 6-5 UTEP, 8-3 Southern Miss, and #24 Hawaii in the bowl 62-35. The Canes took Hawaii’s #24 spot in the final AP Poll.
2. 2008 (11-3 overall, 7-1 Conference USA)
Tulsa’s had some really good offenses. But 2008 was on another level. It seemed like every offense in Oklahoma was going nuclear in 2008, as OU led the nation in PPG, Tulsa finished 2nd, and Oklahoma State 9th. This team averaged a whopping 47.2 PPG, good for 1st overall most years. Similar to the GJ Kinne → Cody Green transition, Tulsa lost all-time leading passer Paul Smith only to become even better as a team with new QB David Johnson. The difference this time though, was Johnson was MUCH better than Green, so there was no dropoff from Smith → Johnson.
Armed with HC Todd Graham and OC Gus Malzahn, Tulsa’s offense was the best in the country through 8 games, going 8-0 averaging 55.6(!!!) PPG. #19 Tulsa went to Arkansas with the BCS in their sights, but the offense fell flat in the 2nd half, scoring just 3 points in a 23-30 loss, ending any BCS bowl hopes. After winning 2 of the last 3 games, Tulsa entered the C-USA championship game at 10-2 facing 8-4 East Carolina. 7(!!!) turnovers from Tulsa ensured a loss, but they did all they could, losing 24-27. Johnson had his worst game of the season by far with 1 TD 5 INT. The year did end on a high, with a 45-13 thrashing of #23 Ball State.
David Johnson ranked 2nd in the nation in passer rating, throwing for 4059 yards 46 TD 18 INT with 10.1 YPA. RB Tarrion Adams ran for 1500+ yards and 14 TD, while WR Brennan Marion went for 1112 receiving yards on just 43 catches, for 25.9 yards per catch, leading the nation for the 2nd straight year. The previous year Marrion was even better, getting 39 catches for 1244 yards and 11 TD for an ABSURD 31.9 yards per catch, setting the NCAA record. He also holds the career record with 28.7 yards per catch.
1. 1991 (10-2 overall, Independent)
This would be Tulsa’s last great season for over a decade. In the early 1990’s, Tulsa dropped health/PE as a major, which over 50% of football players had. This made it hard to attract recruits to an already selective school, and an aging Skelly Stadium, down to its bones, also made it tough to get recruits to sign. Skelly Field is still going strong after 93 years today. But back to 1991—Tulsa was LEGIT. In week 2, Tulsa beat in-state foe Oklahoma State 13-7. After a 17-23 loss to Kansas, Tulsa hosted #15 Texas A&M in front of 30,000 fans. Down 28-10 at halftime, Tulsa rallied back with a late TD to win it 35-34 for their biggest win in over 20 years. They even went toe-to-toe with the national champions that year, Miami (FL), falling 10-34. Afterwards Tulsa was perfect, beating Louisville 40-0, and San Diego State in the bowl 28-17, finishing 10-2 overall with a #21 final ranking. This team turned out to be pretty stacked for such a small school, with 7 NFL Draft selections over the next 3 years, including 2nd round LB and 10-year Detroit Lion Tracy Scroggins, and QB Gus Frerotte. Frerotte was just a backup in ‘91, to starter TJ Rubley. Rubley finished his senior season as Tulsa’s all time leading passer. He was a 3rd string QB for the Packers in 1995, and audibled out of a QB sneak in a 24-24 game with Minnesota to try and throw a pass, only to throw an interception and lose 27-24. He was cut after the game by Mike Holmgren and never played in the NFL again.

5th Quarter

Why has Tulsa been so successful even with such a small enrollment? Do you agree with them being this high? Who was the best QB out of Paul Smith, David Johnson, GJ Kinne, and Dane Evans? Who’s been the best Tulsa player overall in the past 10-20 years? Is it Zaven Collins or someone else?

Hi there,
I'm a long-time Fifa career mode player and I typically play two career saves (playing almost all matches) with every yearly release. The first one is always Club Brugge (my main team), making them into the best club in the world. For the second, I typically go for a RTG career, starting in a lower league, working my way to the top tier and Champions League. Unfortunately there are few countries with depth for this, so that's usually starting in English League 2 (had fun with Stockport, for example).
I like to create some sort of story line, franchise players, semi-realistic transfers with a focus on fun and player development (molding the next world-class players), and wanted to share this year's RTG so far, for which I chose Wrexham, since it's easier to connect with them after the Disney+ show, easier to create some storylines. I play World Class with OS Realism sliders, which tends to work really well for games against stronger opponents, tight games with narrow losses and wins (love being an underdog coming out on top). For teams of a similar or lower strength though, it tends to be a walk-over, which admittedly can become a bit boring but that stops me from playing too long in 1 sitting so that's fine :). Also, I don't complete any trainings so keeping a decent squad-size match fit only works with a busy calendar, which is usually the case.
I'm currently in my 3rd season, just about to head into the Winter transfer period, and would love to share my story as well as get your input on my team and which areas you would improve to be able to aim for a top-5 or CL spot finish. But first, let me introduce my team and the road so far!
As it usually goes, starting with a new team, that isn't match fit or hasn't grown yet, I struggled for the first few games in the first season. By October though, we had a decent stretch of wins and were catching up. It ended up being a head-to-head race with Stockport for the first place, which we took over from them around April and never let go.
The team consisted largely of the original players, apart from some free agents:
  • Alexis Vega (79), admittedly not realistic at all at this level but I can never resist this gem! First signing!
  • Milan Borjan (76) in goal (I figured it was comparable to bringing in Ben Foster in real life, since he wasn't in my save yet) because we were getting in way too many goals. Quite the blundering goalkeeper, but still better than what was available before.
  • By Winter, once I was able to generate some funds by selling unused players, I also brought in Osman Bukari (RW, 72) and Luis Chavez (CM, 79), although the latter never had a major impact, being injured for 3 months after a handful of games, and not really impacting my play.
Standout players of the first season, apart from Alexis Vega were striker duo Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, bagging in the goals. Palmer ended up becoming league top scorer, half of his goals being headers on corners, simply incredible. Jordan Davies (CM, 63) , Aaron Hayden (CB, 65), Eoghan O'Connell (CB, 65) and Thomas O'Connor (CDM, 62) also had a decent season with limited growth in their stats.
With a limited budget for youth scouting, there weren't too many high potential players climbing the ranks apart from homegrown talent Tommy Stevens (RW/ST, 64) who I switched from right flank, where he didn't have the desired impact, to back-up/alternating target man, getting a starting spot in 1 out of 2 games since Ollie Palmer doesn't have the best stamina. The only scouted youth player that came through was Kieran McGovern, a small 16-year old Irish striker (62 OVR and 75-80 pot) with decent pace and shooting, who became Paul Mullin's backup. He impressed on his debut, coming in from the bench and scoring 3 goals, although he didn't have the consistency to deliver every game.
For the second season, I sold off Luis Chavez to get some cashflow to strengthen the squad with young players with potential to make it all the way to the Premier League. Biggest purchase was the then 18-year old Arda Guler (CAM, 74) for € 9M. Other highlights:
  • An entirely new all-Italian back-line from free agents, since I play with 3 CBs and didn't have enough coverage. 16-year old Colombo (Bonucchi regen, 74). Romano (69) and Conti (70) seem like regens as well, without exceptional talent and unable to identify who they'd be the regen of. Any remaining left or right back was sold, since they had no place on our team. Next to Hayden, I brought in a young Belgian CB Mathis to alternate with the Italians. He was a 68-rated free agent, the regen of Jan Vertonghen if I'm not mistaken, though not sure at this point anymore.
  • With Borjan regressing and unable to impress, I decided to sell him and bring in the legend Gianluigi Buffon, to help the development of my very young team. Communication with the Italian back-line would be easy!
  • Noah Mbamba (18y, CDM, 66), Riley McGree (24y, CM, 72) and Aaron Ramsey (20y, CAM, 69) strenghtened our midfield for limited sums of money while Akram Afif (LW, 76) was brought in on a free to provide some competition and relief for Bukari.
  • Despite the success of the previous season, I decided to also sell off Mullin and Palmer, because they had limited growth potential and could still generate a nice sum of money that could be used to bolster the squad. To replace them, I brought in 18-year old Spanish free agent Ismael Ortiz (ST, 70, unknown regen). 3 attacker for 2 starting spots was a bit low, so I decided to bring in 36-year old Dries Mertens (CAM/CF, 84) to help us achieve back-to-back promotions. Evidently, his status surpasses that of the English League One, but Wrexham owner promised Dries' wife Kat (who has big media aspirations) a prominent role in the docuseries, which convinced the couple to sign on for the adventure.
  • In the meantime, the transfer funds allowed me to invest in better youth scouts which resulted in a few players being added to the squad, mostly sent out on loan. By the second half of the season, talented English left winger Eddie Johnson (16y, LW, 68) was brought on to alternate with and learn from Alexis Vega.
  • Romeo Lavia (19, CDM, 70) was brought in during the Winter transfer period to take some pressure off of Mbamba.
  • El Shaarawy (LW, 78) was brought in on a free transfer late in the second half of the season to help cover a few injuries and help the team clinch the trophies, with a view of selling him on next season.
After the typical slow start, we quickly took up the top spot of the league and easily became champions with a 30+ point lead. The reduced stress allowed us to focus on the cup competitions and helped avoid panic during international games with Vega, Bukari, Afif, Davies and McGovern were missing at times. By the end of the season, Mathis and Colombo had become internationals as well! Despite extremely difficult games against Chelsea and Manchester City in the finals, Wrexham's efficiency up front, with McGovern, Irish international at 17 years old (!) scoring the winners from difficult angles, allowed them to succeed in bringing home silverware despite not being the best team on the pitch. The Racecourse ground now holds a Papa John's, League Cup and FA Cup trophy and Wrexham will be playing in the Europa League next season, despite not being in the top flight of football.
Standout players of the second season, next to Vega, were:
  • Colombo, with 10+ goals on corner and standout performances at the center position now giving him potential to become a special player!
  • Dries Mertens, despite suffering from his age and not being able to play full games, still scored a lot of goals and provided plenty of assists.
  • Ortiz, despite not being our first choice striker, still managed to become top scorer in the league where he got plenty of game time when our #1 choices were being rested.
  • McGovern and Stevens developing well, with their goals now giving them the potential to be special as well. Stevens was temporarily held back with a broken foot, but still had a fantastic season.
For the third season, which was going to be a full one with the Europa League being added, I decided not to sell too many core players, only selling off the ones on the fringe that were not up for the standard of a top Championship side. This included most of the original Wrexham players still there, like Forde, Hayden, O'Connell, Tozer, etc. The first starting player I sold was Riley McGree. Despite having a good season, I wanted to have more of a physical presence on the #8 next to Arda Guler. Looking for young enough physically strong players, with good stamina and some growth potential that didn't cost a fortune, I ended up getting Ismaily Coulibaly (23, CM/CDM, 73) from Sheffield United. He's doing well so far without any stand-out performances.
The second starting/alternating player we bid farewell was Dries Mertens. He had an amazing season, but dropped down to 81 overall and, despite being a fan favorite, would likely not be up to the standard after another year. On top of that, I always have to substitute him due to his low stamina. When Benfica offered € 19M for my old striker (not being transfer listed), I decided to accept. I figured Dries and Kat probably missed the sunny and warm climate they're used to from Napoli and Istanbul anyway... To fill up the vacant 4th striker spot we signed free agent Diego Lopez (18y, ST, 76), who is Iago Aspas' regen and able to compete with the other 3 strikers from the start.
With Conti out for most of the season (7 month injury) I brought in 2 Spanish CBs from free agency: the first is left-footed Martinez (18y) with 78 OVR to cover the left side of the defending trio. He has now already hit his max potential at 79, unfortunately. He's the Marcos Alonso regen, hoping his potential increases after a decent season. Jose Reyes (18y) with 78 OVR is Pique's regen. Along with Colombo I'm hoping he will have surpassed an 85 rating by the end of the season, to form the foundation of my defence for years to come.
After our traditional few losses and draws in the start of the season, we took over the #1 spot from Sunderland by the start of December and it's looking like we've created a good gap now end of December, following 2 direct clashes with them as well as a game against Southampton, who might become our toughest competitor with a Premier League graded team with plenty of 80+ rated players.
With the Winter transfer period approaching and 60M+ in the bank to spend, I'm looking at a few key areas to improve to prepare my team for next year's Premier League, aiming for a top 5 spot, as well as potentially challenging for the Europa League title. Would love your input on decent (not too exotic) signings, feedback on my team or journey so far. Areas I'm looking to improve:
  • GK: I love having Buffon in goal, but with a rating of 78, he might be a bit light for the Premier League. I have Lloris' regen (77 rated) out on loan, but he isn't growing too much. Perhaps I'll give him a chance next season, with Buffon as a back-up, although I'd love a few other suggestions.
  • Left-footed CB: Marcos Alonso regen Martinez is more of a LB. I'd prefer a physically tall and strong left-footed CB with good feet. Someone like Gvardiol, but more realistic, since he's out of reach (87-rated at Aston Villa currently).
  • CDM: Lavia and Mbamba are now 78 and 77 rated and still have room to grow. They'll likely be at 80 by the end of the season, although I think they will stop developing shortly after, might max out at 82-83 by end of the next season, whereas ideally I'd like a physically-strong CB with 85+ potential.
  • CM: I could sell off Coulibaly or keep him as second choice. Currently, I alternate Aaron Ramsey with him, putting an 18-year old Argentinian 73-rated youth academy graduate on Guler's position, but I'd rather have Ramsey as my second CAM. Been thinking about Jacob Ramsey (23y, CM, 80) who's currently playing in Serie A in my save, would be cool to reunite the brothers. I am open to other suggestions though!
  • RW: Afif is getting a bit older and won't develop as much anymore. I'd love an 85+ potential young guy here too. I'd probably sell Afif and keep Bukari as the back-up. Would love to get Nusa in from Club Brugge, but they don't want to sell...
  • ST: Stevens is my main aerial threat with 190cm. Lopez scores a header every now and again, but ideally I want a second young striker of 190cm+ with decent speed. Someone like Sesko, although he's likely already out of reach as well by now.

Thoughts?
