2023.05.30 12:27 Arula777 Added Warpstone Weaponry to my DnD Campaign Need Advice

WARNING THIS POST IS VERY LONG!!! EDIT: FORMATTING! PLEASE FORGIVE ME!
So I added Warpstone to my 5E game. For the uninitiated its the Warhammer equivalent of Uranium/Weapons Grade Fissile Material. Was it a mistake... perhaps. My players procured it, rolled to refine it, and then paid a substantial amount of gold to have it fashioned into weapons. Currently I have 1 fighter and 1 barbarian that possess these weapons. As it stands whenever the Barbarian Rages, or the Fighter Action Surges, they must roll on the "Warpstone Weapon Table" as detailed below.
The weapons are only +1, but as you can see they have a little more "umph" than your typical +1 weapon. The players are lvl 7, and the ultimate culmination of the weapons table results in a "Wish" (Scroll to the bottom to see effects)... currently, this is what I have (plus some more, but it exceeds the post length).
I need your help to tell me just how badly I screwed up... or if I can make this work. If this seems like something I can manufacture into a table, and if it gains traction within the community I will post a link to the google doc, otherwise... here it is in its bastard glory...
  1. Warp Explosion: The weapon overloads with chaotic energy causing a massive explosion. The Weapon is destroyed in the process. Roll a d100, This is the radius of the explosion. Every creature within the radius must roll a DEX Saving throw DC 18. Full damage on a failed save, half on a successful one. For each level of the Wielder roll 1d20, this is the damage caused by the explosion. Any creature caught in the radius of the explosion that fails the DEX save may choose to roll on the Warpstone Weapon table to take half damage instead.
  2. Corruption: The wielder's flesh begins to mutate and warp, causing physical deformities. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. Roll 1d6, 1= R leg, 2= L leg, 3= R arm, 4= L arm, 5= Torso, 6= Head. If a leg is affected Speed is reduced by half. If an arm is affected the wielder has disadvantage on attack rolls. If the torso is affected the wielder rolls an additional d10 and their max HP is reduced by that number. If the wielder's head is affected they roll 1d6: on a 1-2 the player is blinded, on a 3-4 the player is deafened, on a 5 the player is muted, and on a 6 their nose falls off. If the player's nose falls off only Greater Restoration may reattach the player's nose to their face. If the number of hours before a player's nose is reattached exceeds the number of hours this effect impacts the player, then then the player's nose disintegrates and the player takes a permanent -2 to persuasion rolls, and -2 to perception rolls involving smell, the player gains a permanent +4 to intimidation rolls. If a player's nose suffers disintegration the only way to restore it is through a wish spell.
  3. Mind Warp: The weapon's influence seeps into the wielder's mind, causing hallucinations and delusions. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. During combat, at the beginning of their turn the player rolls a WIS saving throw DC 19, on a failure they may only use an action, reaction, bonus action, or movement. On a success they may take their turn as normal. While out of combat the player has disadvantage on all perception rolls until the effect ends.
  4. Taint: The wielder's presence becomes repulsive, attracting malevolent entities and causing social ostracism. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. Player has disadvantage on all CHA rolls and NPC's will treat them with disdain.
  5. Soul Erosion: The weapon gradually drains the wielder's life force, weakening them over time. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. On effect, and at the beginning of each hour, the player rolls a CON saving throw starting at a DC 18. On a failure the player may choose one of the following: roll a hit die and lose max HP equivalent to the die roll, roll 1d4 and reduce their STR ability score by that much, or take 2 levels of Exhaustion. On success the player suffers no negative effects and the DC for future saving throws is reduced by 1.
  6. Warp Madness: Exposure to the weapon's energies drives the wielder to madness, resulting in erratic behavior. Roll 1d100, this is the time in hours the player is affected. Roll an additional 1d100 on the long term madness table. If the player rolls a 1 or 100 at any time they must roll an additional 1d100 on the indefinite madness table. If the player's rolls result in indefinite madness roll the only cure is through a Wish spell.
  7. Uncontrolled Mutation: The wielder's body undergoes uncontrolled and unpredictable mutations, leading to physical instability. Roll a STR saving throw DC 17. On failure the player Rolls 1d6, 1-2= Leg, 3-4= Arm, 5= Torso, 6= Head.
- If a leg is affected Speed is reduced by half.
- If an arm is affected the wielder has disadvantage on attack rolls.
- If the torso is affected the wielder rolls an additional d10 and their max HP is reduced by that number.
- If the wielder's head is affected they roll 1d6:
- 1-2= the player is blinded.
- 3-4= the player is deafened.
- 5= the player is muted
- 6= their nose falls off.
  1. Chaotic Feedback: Wielding the weapon causes chaotic feedback, resulting in random magical effects on the wielder. Roll 1d100 on the Wild Magic Surge table.
  2. Psychic Instability: The weapon disrupts psychic abilities, causing psychic powers to become unpredictable or uncontrollable. The player rolls 1d10, this is the time in minutes the player is affected. The player rolls 1d100, this is the radius of the effect in feet.
The player becomes a psychic lightning rod, any psychic damage that is dealt within the radius of effect is instead redirected towards the player.
  1. Warp Sickness: The wielder experiences chronic illness and weakened vitality due to prolonged exposure to the Weapon's Warp energies. The wielder must succeed on a Constitution saving throw DC 15 or take 4d10 radiant damage, suffer one level of exhaustion, and emit a dim, greenish light in a 5-foot radius. This light makes it impossible for the creature to benefit from being invisible. The light and any levels of exhaustion caused by this effect end when the affected player takes a long rest.
  2. Reality Fracture: The weapon creates temporary ruptures in reality around the wielder, causing unpredictable and dangerous phenomena. The player must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw, DC 14 or it can’t take reactions until the effect ends. The affected target must also roll a d10 at the start of each of its turns; the number rolled determines what happens to the target, as shown on the Reality Break Effects table.
1–2 = Vision of the Far Realm. The target takes 2d12 psychic damage, and it is stunned until the end of the turn.
3–5 = Rending Rift. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw, DC 15, taking 2d12 force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
6–8 = Wormhole. The target is teleported, along with everything it is wearing and carrying, up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space of your choice that you can see. The target also takes 2d12 force damage and is knocked prone.
9–10 = Chill of the Dark Void. The target takes 2d12 cold damage, and it is blinded until the end of the turn.
At the end of each of its turns, the affected target can repeat the Wisdom saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.
  1. Dark Resonance: The weapon resonates with dark energies, attracting malevolent entities and increasing the risk of possession.
Roll a d20:
- 1 = the Mists of Ravenloft appear and the DM determines the dread realm the party is transported to. - 20 = a portal to Avernus opens and the DM determines if a hellish host erupts from it, or drags the party in.
- 2-9 = Summon Lesser Demons (the demons are hostile to everyone).
- 10 = Summon Greater Demon which is hostile to everyone.
- 11-19 = Summon Fiend which is not immediately hostile.
If a summon effect occurs roll an additional d10 to determine the level of the casting. Any number below the spell's level; causes the spell to fail. Otherwise it is up-cast to the appropriate level. If the spell is 10th level it is to the DM's discretion what comes through the warp.
  1. Curse of the Warp: The weapon carries a potent curse that brings misfortune and calamity to the wielder and those around them. If the Remove Curse spell is used, as an action, the player may become unattuned from the weapon and the curse's effects will diminish. Otherwise the weapon must be destroyed.
- Roll 1d12, this is the number in months the player is affected by the curse.
- Roll 1d10 to establish one of the following effects:
1: The victim has disadvantage on attack rolls, if an effect would grant the player advantage or add to their roll it instead has the opposite effect.
2: The victim can’t communicate using language, whether through speaking, sign language, writing, telepathy, or any other means.
3: The victim gains 3 levels of exhaustion that can’t be removed while the curse endures.
4: When the victim finishes a long rest, they must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, or their hit point maximum is reduced by 1d10. If this reduces their hit point maximum to 0, the victim dies, and their body crumbles to dust.
5: When the victim takes damage, they take an extra 1d10 necrotic damage. This effect can’t happen again until the start of the victim’s next turn.
6: A monster hunts the victim relentlessly. Even if the monster dies, it rises again or a new one takes its place 24 hours later.
7: The victim gains vulnerability to one damage type.
8: The victim’s Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution score is reduced to 3, and the victim can’t be raised from the dead while the curse lasts.
9-10: The victim gains a Dark Gift.
  1. Warp Addiction: The wielder becomes addicted to the sensations and power granted by the weapon, leading to reckless behavior to satisfy their cravings. Roll 1d100 on the indefinite madness table 3 times. A greater restoration spell or more powerful magic is required to rid a character of indefinite madness.
  2. Haunting Whispers: The weapon whispers sinister thoughts and temptations to the wielder, gradually eroding their moral compass. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes the effect lasts. Upon being afflicted, and every minute, or at the beginning of each turn if in combat, the player must Roll 1d100 on the short term madness table. The character must then roll a CHA saving throw DC 10 or suffer the effects of madness as well as count the saving throw as a failure. On any success all madness effects are ended and any failed saves are removed. The character is deafened for the remainder of the effect's time. On a Failure they begin to become corrupted by evil forces, after three failed saves their alignment shifts to chaotic evil.
  3. Soul Corruption: Wielding the weapon corrupts the wielder's soul, staining it with dark and malevolent energies. Roll 1d100 on the short term madness table. While affected the character must roll a CHA saving throw DC 18. On a success the madness effect is ended. On a Failure they are corrupted by evil forces and their alignment shifts to chaotic evil.
  4. Energy Feedback: The weapon unleashes bursts of chaotic energy upon striking, causing harm to the wielder as well. On a hit, roll 1d6 to deal additional force damage to the target. Half of any damage dealt by the weapon is redirected to the wielder in the form of force damage.
  5. Power Drain: The weapon drains the wielder's own strength and vitality with each strike, making them weaker over time. On a hit the player rolls 1d4 losing an equivalent amount of STR and Max HP. These are restored at the end of a long rest or by Greater Restoration.
  6. Reality Deterioration: Prolonged use of the weapon causes the wielder to lose touch with reality, leading to confusion and disorientation. The wielder is affected as if under the effects of the confusion spell.
  7. Ethereal Binding: The weapon binds itself to the wielder's soul, making it difficult or impossible to part ways with the cursed weapon. The character is gradually consumed with a paranoia surrounding the loss or destruction of the weapon. If the weapon is lost, unattuned to (via remove curse), or destroyed, the player rolls 2 hit dice and their max HP is reduced by the amount rolled. Only greater restoration may restore the lost HP.
  8. Warp Consumption: The weapon consumes the wielder's essence, eventually turning them into a twisted servant of Chaos. Roll 1d100 on the short term madness table. While affected the character must roll a CHA saving throw DC 19. On a success the madness effect is ended. On a Failure they begin to become corrupted by evil forces, after three failed saves their alignment shifts to chaotic evil.
  9. Corrosive Touch: The wielder's skin becomes corrosive, causing anything they touch to dissolve or decay. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes this effect lasts. Any items the player is currently wearing begin to take damage. A player may use their turn to drop their gear. At the beginning of each turn the player rolls a d20. On a 1-5 any armor, weapons, or gear the player is still touching, rapidly disintegrate into a pile of goo. The player has advantage on rolls to grapple, a grappled creature or an object the player interacts with takes 6d6 acid damage.
  10. Painful Paralysis: The wielder experiences temporary paralysis and intense pain, making movement difficult or impossible. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes the player is affected. At the start of each turn the player rolls a CON saving throw, DC 12, or they become paralyzed. A player may choose to fight the paralysis by rolling a hit die and taking an equivalent amount of damage, but their speed is halved and they have disadvantage on any attack rolls made while affected by the paralysis.
  11. Rotting Flesh: The wielder's flesh begins to rot and decay, emitting a foul odor and attracting disease-ridden vermin. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. The player has disadvantage on stealth rolls or attempts to hide. At the start of each turn roll 1d20. If the roll is less then 10 roll 2d4, that many diseased giant rats are summoned. They are hostile to everyone and always attempt to bite the affected player.
  12. Fractured Bones: The wielder's bones become brittle and prone to fractures, causing constant pain and limited mobility. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. The player has disadvantage on STR and CON saving throws and ability checks that use those modifiers. Additionally, the player has vulnerability to Bludgeoning and Force damage.
  13. Warped Nervous System: The wielder's nerves become erratic and hypersensitive, resulting in chronic pain and involuntary muscle spasms. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. The player has disadvantage on DEX and INT saving throws and any ability checks that use those modifiers. Additionally the player has vulnerability to Lightning and Psychic damage.
  14. Cursed Blood: The wielder's blood becomes toxic, causing sickness and weakness when exposed to others or ingested. When a player is damaged they may use their reaction to cover an opponent within 5ft with their blood. The player may also cut themselves as an action and throw their blood at an opponent. Upon being hit with the player's blood the affected creature must roll a CON saving throw DC 15 or suffer disadvantage on any attack rolls.
  15. Deteriorating Vitality: The wielder's life force weakens, leading to fatigue, decreased physical endurance, and overall diminished health. Roll 1d4, this is the time in days the player is affected. While affected the player has disadvantage on attack rolls and STR and CON saving throws and ability checks that use those modifiers. At the start of each day the player must make a CON saving throw DC 12. On a failed save they roll half of their hit die and take an equivalent amount of damage. If the player doesn't have enough hit die to roll they instead take 2 points of exhaustion that cannot be removed until this effect ends. A greater restoration spell ends this effect.
  16. Uncontrollable Tremors: The wielder experiences uncontrollable shaking and tremors, impairing their coordination and precision. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. The player has disadvantage on DEX and STR saves and any ability checks that use these modifiers. The player also stutters when they speak. Any spells that use verbal or somatic components are subject to a a DEX save equal to the player's spellcasting modifier. On a fail the spell does not occur.
  17. Warped Sensations: The wielder's senses become distorted, leading to constant migraines, sensory overload, or loss of sensation. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. The player has disadvantage on WIS and INT saving throws and any ability checks that use those modifiers. Additionally the player has vulnerability to Thunder and Psychic damage.
  18. Necrotic Aura: The wielder emits a malignant aura that withers nearby plant life, causing wounds to fester and heal slowly. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes this effect lasts. Roll 2d10, this is the size of the aura in meters centered on the warpstone weapon. Any creature that enters or starts its turn in the aura, must make a CON saving throw DC 12 or take 2d6 necrotic damage. While in this aura any attempts to heal or stabilize someone automatically fail.
  19. Tainted Aura: The wielder's presence causes discomfort and repulsion in others, resulting in social isolation and rejection. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours the player is affected. While affected the player has disadvantage on CHA and WIS saving throws and any ability checks that use this modifier.
  20. Darkened Vision: The wielder's eyesight becomes compromised, causing impaired vision, night blindness, or distorted perception. Roll 4d6, this is the time in hours this effect lasts. The player's vision is reduced to 10 ft and if they have darkvision or truesight it is disabled. The player also has disadvantage on perception rolls.
  21. Slowed Metabolism: The wielder's metabolism drastically slows down, leading to weight gain, sluggishness, and reduced physical performance. Roll 1d12, this is the time in months the player is affected. While affected the player only needs to eat the equivalent of one day's food per 10 day.
  22. Uncontrolled Growth: The wielder's body experiences abnormal growth spurts, resulting in disproportionate limbs or excessive height. Roll 1d12, this is the time in months the player is affected. Upon being affected and at the beginning of each month roll 1d6, 1= R leg, 2= L leg, 3= R arm, 4= L arm, 5= Torso, 6= Neck. Then roll 1d6, add an equivalent number of inches to the affected body part. These changes can only be reversed by a greater restoration spell after duration of the spell has occurred.
  23. Depleted Vitality: The wielder's life force drains rapidly, leading to chronic weakness, pale skin, and a fragile constitution. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes the player is affected. At the start of each turn roll a CON saving throw DC 12, on a success roll a hit die and take an equivalent amount of damage. On a failure, do the same thing, but reduce your maximum number of hit die by 1. If the player has no hit die remaining, whether by depletion from the effect or if their hit die pool is reduced to zero, they must instead roll 1d4 and subtract the result from their CON score. Any of these effects can be reversed by Greater Restoration.
  24. Inflammation: The wielder's body becomes chronically inflamed, causing joint pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Speed is reduced by half. If the player uses the Dash, Dodge, or Disengage action they must roll a CON saving throw DC 12. On Success they may move their full speed (it cannot be doubled as with the Dash action), or take the respective action, but they will take one point of exhaustion. On failure the player takes one point of exhaustion.
  25. Searing Burns: The wielder's skin is prone to painful, blistering burns from even the slightest exposure to heat or sunlight. Roll 1d10, this is the time in minutes the player is affected. The player takes 2d10 radiant damage when it starts its turn in sunlight. While in sunlight, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.
... I have place holder descriptions for every value after this one, but I wanna fast forward to the ultimate...
  1. Wish of the Warp: The weapon transmutes into a dense bead of unstable bright green chaos energy. Although the weapon is lost in the process, the wielder may make one wish. This effect only lasts for a single round, if a wish is not made during the round of combat the energy is unleashed and a chaotic explosion occurs. The wielder is the only creature not affected by the explosion.

- Marshall, M. (2020). The hidden links between mental disorders. Nature, 581(7806), 19–21. doi:10.1038/d41586-020-00922-8

2023.05.30 12:04 OBlondeOne ' But those trees are older than me ...'

A couple houses down the road from me there was a nice little place just sold to a lovely young couple ( the Newbies ) about a month ago. Their new yard was bordered by a double layer of nice bushy trees on 3.5 sides, which was part of the appeal. Having lived in the city, privacy was #1 on their forever home list. The property itself is surrounded by farm land used mostly for cattle.
About 2 weeks ago the Newbies moved in and when inspecting the property they found several of the exterior layer of trees had been cut down, leaving large gaps in their privacy line. These trees kept being downed by what was obviously a chainsaw over the next few days on all 3 sides but nobody ever saw anything in such a rural area. Hearing farm machinery or a chainsaw throughout the day is fairly common and houses are fairly far apart with trees in between them. As I'm the closest neighbor to them they stopped in to ask if I had heard or seen anything. ( I did not ). We started talking and hit it off enough to exchange numbers and social media info and started chatting often.
The trees being cut not only cost them some of their privacy, but protection from the winter storms which can get quite bad out here. It also really bothered them that someone would just cut their trees without permission.
5 days ago I was called over after dark to watch their children as their 3 dogs started acting odd and lethargic. Turned out the dogs somehow ate what the vet is calling tainted meat and 2 didn't make it. The third is fighting and their vet bill is already around $11,000 due to emergency services being needed after hours, multiple surgeries and testing. The vet came back 3 days ago strongly suggesting that they look around their property for potentially poisoned meat and called the police. They came up and searched the property and found some more dead animals nearby and pieces of old steak which were bagged and brought in for testing.
Yesterday the police showed up at Farmers home and arrested him. He literally lives right next door to me so it was hard not to see what was going on..
I called the Newbies to ask if it has anything yo do with their issue and Papa Newbie just told me the whole messed up story. Holy crap. Turns out Farmer is a legit basket case...
The Newbies were approached the day they took their final pre-sold inspection of the property about the trees in the back of the yard by Farmer. Farmer told the Newbies that their tree branches were growing onto his land and affecting the effectiveness of his electric fence ( installed just last fall ). Farmer strongly suggested to Newbies that they cut the double line of trees down entirely. Newbies suggested Farmer moved his fence back a foot instead as Newbies stated ' those trees are older than me''.
Farmer kept insisting once the sale officially went through so the Newbies took out their deed and lo and behold! Farmers recently installed electric fence was actually 3 ft over their property line.
Farmer now has no choice but to move his fancy new fence back minimum 3 feet. Which means he has to cut quite a few of HIS trees and remove stumps on HIS property to do so. We are still cleaning up from the last hurricane so this will be very hard to get done this season and will be VERY expensive. Plus the machinery needed to cut trees and shave stumps this size will put massive ruts in the land which will have to be fixed before allowing the cows back into the main pasture.
This has started other property disagreements as it seems this isn't the only property that was encroached on and it's not the first family harassed.
( when I purchased my home I refused to cut or move several mature trees on my property that were close to the fence line because 1. They were full grown 25+ yr old trees at this point and 2. It would have cost hundreds to replace with saplings and over a thousand to relocate them. They all mysteriously 'fell' during winter storms within that first year. Each of the homes bordering the farmland have been standing 20+ yrs )
From what we can gather Farmer has been waiting until neighbors went to work or a storm that reduces visibility/noise and cut down trees on others' property that he felt were too close to his property.
We found out through a member of the community associated with the police just now that Farmer was officially charged for putting out antifreeze laced meat ( huge no no here ) which killed Newbies dog gradually in a horrendous way ( kidney failure in otherwise healthy dogs ).
Additional potential charges also include vandalism, destruction of property, harassment... charges stem from not just the Newbies but quite a few families with property that borders the farm. I wish I could prove it was Farmer that cut down my trees but given all this I know it was. Newbies dogs weren't the first to die this way in our community either. They were the first to get to the vet and tested before passing away though and many neighbors are beyond furious.
I wonder how this will all play out... but this smells an awful lot like Karma.
They say there's one in every community. But I'm thinking thanks to drugs there's far more than that in this once quiet and calm community.

2023.05.30 11:40 lorddelorean Can I get into a good master's program? (International Student)

Hey!
I'm a Ukrainian-Crimean diaspora born and raised in Turkey with double citizenship aged 24. A valedictorian graduate of my university in Turkey, with a 3.92 GPA. I am now continuing my double major in Law, I am in my senior year and graduating from it in 2 weeks with approx. 3.50-3.55 GPA. I have many certificates in international policy, migration, international law, American law, etc., and I was an intern in the diplomatic research community for two months.
I want to apply to the T15 M.P.P programs, but I have many confusions in my mind;
1- My double major. Is Law double major would be benefitable for an M.P.P master's if I connect with each other in the work field of International Law or International Politics?
2- Finance. I have no opportunity to pay the tuition. Still, I have heard that in top-tier universities, you can get a scholarship that covers ''almost everything'', but I have no idea about what it covers.
3- The most important is the chance to be accepted into any top-tier university. I am planning to take the GRE and TOEFL this summer; I am planning to mainly focus on GRE, even though some programs don't ask for the GRE, since it is challenging exam. Even though having good scores on the exams, I know the admissions will be very challenging. Quantitive won't be a problem, as I assume. Will it drastically help?
4- Work Experience. There my problem starts. I have a month of work experience in a company as a foreign sales colleague and two weeks of internship at the Diplomacy Works Association. I will start a Law Internship (6 months in Courthouse, six months in Lawyer's Office) covering the application process. Will it be terrible to ruin my shoot in my applications?
So, what should I do? I don't have any published papers, which makes me feel I'm a bit late and unsuccessful about it. I am open to any suggestions. What should I do to enrich my application? I am planning to attend volunteer work, at non-profit organizations this summer.
Suggest me anything, even apart from my questions, please. I would like to know about the ''musts'' of the application process. I will be reading your valuable comments.

2023.05.30 11:11 XMG_gg [Survey] Should traditional charging ports be removed to only offer charging via USB-C on future laptops?

[Survey] Should traditional charging ports be removed to only offer charging via USB-C on future laptops?
Hi everyone,
this thread introduces a new survey to discuss the question in the headline. However, before we begin asking questions, we would like to provide an overview of our current status on USB-C charging and a perspective on the pros and cons of having USB-C as the only, exclusive power input method.
Table of content:
  • Which XMG and SCHENKER laptops can be charged over USB-C or Thunderbolt?
  • Our perspective on the USB-C versus traditional laptop charger debate
  • USB-C chargers generally do not offer the same headroom capability (surge and peak) as traditional adapters
  • Voltage conversion via USB-C above 100W
  • Long-term perspective on mechanical stability
  • Conclusion
  • Practical tips
  • Introducing a new ultra-slim 180W adapter (with barrel plug)
  • Your feedback (our survey)

Which XMG and SCHENKER laptops can be charged over USB-C or Thunderbolt?

Our current portfolio is already in compliance with the upcoming EU directive to mandate USB-C charging on some laptops from 2026. Why only some? Contrary to popular belief, the directive does not mandate USB-C charging on all laptops but only on those, that operate on a power budget of 100 watts or less.
Citation:
  • “[…] laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port.” ← Source (press release of European Parliament)
Here is our current list of models with USB-C charging:
The XMG PRO, SCHENKER VISION and SCHENKER KEY series are particularly noteworthy in this list. These are high-powered laptops that can be equipped with dedicated GPUs and still support charging via USB-C.
Since USB-IF compliant USB-C chargers are still limited to 100 watts output power (per port), the performance of the GPU is severely limited under USB-C. The CPU performance however should be at least on an acceptable level. For heavy use or gaming, we strongly recommend using the original charger.
For more information, see these FAQ articles:

Our perspective on the USB-C versus traditional laptop charger debate

There has been growing sentiment towards the standardization of USB-C charging for laptops with some users calling for the abolishment of barrel plug ports alltogether. While proponents of this tout USB-C as the "one size fits all" future, especially with the impending rollout of USB-C power delivery with 240W, we caution that the situation may require a more nuanced approach.
So here is why the 5.5/2.5mm barrel plug chargers for laptops, an industry standard as per IEC 60130-10, should not be hastily dismissed as 'e-waste'.

USB-C chargers generally do not offer the same headroom capability (surge and peak) as traditional adapters

Peak and surge loads: There are different tolerance values between various chargers for the so-called “surge” and “peak” states of charge or the maximum value at which the overcurrent protection (OCP) takes effect – i.e. the maximum current that the power supply can deliver before it switches off for safety reasons. These values indicate the so-called “headroom” of a power supply, which corresponds to the extended margin above the advertised wattage. This differing “headroom” is part of the design specification of each charger and dictates the charger’s electrical capabilities. The USB-C cable and ports are also not rated for currents over 5 Ampere, making it harder to guarantee peak and surge loads over 100 watts. Consequently, since the USB-C manufacturers are not obliged to grant additional leeway, they usually refrain from volunteering it.
Massive peaks with dGPUs: Load peaks in the millisecond range are far above the nominal value. A laptop manufacturer has no direct influence on this kind of power behaviour. We can choose which TGP levels we want to support with the mainboard or cooling system. But the load peaks of a component or a board layout that exceed the TGP result from the fixed specifications of the chip manufacturers and are controlled by the proprietary VBIOS and graphics driver.
Such peaks in power consumption cannot be read out with conventional software and are not documented in publicly accessible data sheets. However, special measuring hardware can reveal them reliably. For desktop PCs, for example, you would measure directly at the PCI Express slot and on the 12-Volt rail of the GPU’s power conection. This article on Igor’s Lab offers a detailed insight into the actual power consumption of modern graphics cards, citing a 80% power overshoot for about 20 milliseconds above nominal board power on the example RTX 3070.
Case study: The following table compares the capabilities of a conventional 90-Watt laptop power adapter with a popular 100-Watt USB-C charger with fixed cable.
https://preview.redd.it/u9xc39qmbx2b1.png?width=1845&format=png&auto=webp&s=bde91d950923462e3431de202cc59a7bfd61da86
Such detailed specifications for laptop and USB-C power adapters are usually not publicly available, but they play an important role for system stability under high, fluctuating loads.
Analyis:
  • Surge: the 100-watts USB-C charger has 15 percent lower surge capacity than the conventional 90-watts adapter.
  • OCP: the USB-C charger’s capacity is 20% below that of the conventional adapter
It can be reasonably assumed that those tolerance values are even lower for particularly small and light USB-C chargers.

Voltage conversion via USB-C above 100W

Even with the latest Power Delivery 2.1 standard that promises up to 240 watts of power, the currents (Amperage) in USB-C are still capped at 5A due to the connector and cable's rating. Therefore, for high-performance devices like gaming laptops or mobile workstations requiring power close to 240W, a high voltage such as 48V becomes inevitable (5A*48V=240W). However, delivering power at such a high voltage is less efficient due to the complexities of power conversion on the laptop side.
A laptop typically requires internal voltages of around 5V or 12V, which can be more easily achieved by stepping down from the traditional 19V, rather than from 48V.
The efficiency of the voltage conversion can be measured in two domains:
  • Space constraints: Laptop mainboards have limited surface space. More complex voltage conversions requires more mainboard space for the neccessary transformers and filters. Ideally, those components need to be very close to the USB-C port of the laptop. But the edges of the mainboards on high-end laptops are already pretty cramped with the internal components required to drive all the other I/O ports. Accommodating a 48V step-down mechanism would necessitate a compromise on the number of other I/O port or the quality of their features. Compensation this with longer I/O port areas would require compromises other features such as the size of the cooling systems (fan exhaust area), battery capacity or removable RAM - all of which most users would consider essential.
  • Thermal considerations: Voltage conversion is never 100% efficient. Even with efficiency factors usually above 80%, some energy is inevitably lost during conversion and manifests as heat. A conversion from 48V to 5V inside the laptop generates more heat than a conversion from 19V to 5V. Ideally, you want this heat loss to occur in the external power supply, where it can be passively dissipated. However, if this heat loss happens inside the laptop, it adds to the overall heat output already generated by the CPU, GPU, RAM, and other voltage regulators. High-performance laptops, already bound by thermal limits, can ill afford this additional heat.
Ultimately, the reliance on 48V would lead to a less efficient system overall and introduces restrictions on mainboard layout.
If you combine this with the latency requirements of Thunderbolt and USB4 (where relevant chipsets need to have a very close proximity to the physical port), it may explain why there are currently no USB-IF compliant hardware solutions with 240W in the market right now.

Long-term perspective on mechanical stability

Lateral force and leverage of the plug: Even when considering laptops operating within the mainstream 100W USB-C power delivery, the argument for USB-C being the sole power input falls short. While USB-C provides great convenience and is ideal for travel, its mechanical stability is arguably not as robust as a high-quality 5.5/2.5mm barrel with 10mm length. While USB-C is reversible (can be plugged in in both orientations), it cannot rotate inside its socket. This means any lateral pull forces exerted when adjusting the cable are applied directly on the socket.
Moreover, the typical USB-C cable do not have 90° L-shaped plugs and the plugs themselves are long and rigid. This design, although necessitated by the complexity of USB-C requiring active components (chips) on the cable side, can potentially compromise the durability of the socket over time: length and lack of flexibility of the plug applies additional leverage on the socket: the more leverage a plug has, the more force is applied to the socket when pulling or pushing on cables from inconvenient angles.
Durability of the socket: Adding to the mechanical concerns, the electronic complexity of USB-C connectors is another point worth considering. Unlike the standard IEC 60130-10 barrel plug, which is quite straightforward with just three pins - positive, negative, and ground, a USB-C socket is considerably more intricate.
USB-C incorporates a complex pin-out structure to support its wide range of functionality, including power delivery, data transfer, and even video output. This complexity means each USB-C socket requires numerous smaller, densely packed solder points to connect it to the mainboard.
From an engineering standpoint, these small and closely spaced solder points could be more susceptible to damage. Whether through accidental bumps, jostling, or simple wear and tear, these solder joints can become loose or broken over time. This could lead to connection instability or even complete failure of the port, especially under harsh or heavy use conditions.

Conclusion

Therefore, while USB-C is indeed a significant stride in technology and has its advantages, it is not without its limitations. It is reasonable to wish for optional USB-c charging for mobile use. However, removing the barrel plug alltogether can be quite risky when considering the lifetime of the product after years of heavy use with USB-C.

Practical tips

To make mobile use safer and more convenient, we would like to highlight these ideas:
Another idea would be to add a USB-A or USB-C power output port to a traditional barrel plug charger.

Introducing a new ultra-slim 180W adapter (with barrel plug)

SCHENKER VISION 16 Pro comes with a new 180 watts charger is smaller and lighter compared to last year's charger, despite not being a GaN adapter.
The new charger has half the volume and 60% lower weight compared to its predecessor. As a spare adapter, it will become available on bestware shortly.

Your feedback (our survey)

We would like to ask the community a few questions:
  • Where do you stand on the USB-C vs. Barrel Plug debate?
  • Would you suggest do remove barrel plug ports alltogether?
  • How much more would you be willing to pay for more premium charger (i.e. USB output, ultra-light etc.)

[Survey] Should traditional charging ports be removed to only offer charging via USB-C on (some) future laptops?

The Survey is hosted on Google Forms, yet it is 100% anonymous. No login required.
Survey may take 1-3 minutes to complete, depending on how long you ponder each question.
Feel free to reply to this post with any questions or remarks.
Thank you for your feedback!

2023.05.30 10:24 Kmb24 Best area for families

Hi, my husband and I are thinking of moving to Georgia. Right now we’re in Saint Petersburg Florida, we just can’t afford to live here anymore even though I love this area (although not loving Florida right now). Looking for a town with similar vibes, breweries, restaurants, cute downtown. Being near the water isn’t necessary but a plus. We are thinking Savannah might be an option.
We are planning on starting a family soon so would like a family friendly location with good schools.
We are politically to the left, would like diverse, artsy communities. Trying to avoid communities with Trump flags everywhere.
Looking at 250k for a house
I’m a nurse, what hospitals are good to work for and what hospitals aren’t good to work for? Also what should I expect salary wise as a nurse with 2 years experience? In Florida I make 36/hr, would it be comparable?
TIA!

2023.05.30 10:16 TheShadowspawn Chapter Forty - The Alora Part 2

Human Commander: "Thank you for coming so quickly, Specialist Anders."
Human Dave: "You really should be thanking Captain. It is his ship after all that brought me here."
HC: Thank you, Captain, for bringing him back. I just wish it were under better circumstances."
Alien Captain: "I appreciate your kind words, Commander."
HC: "Now, Anders, the information you discovered is, quite frankly, not something we ever expected to hear about, and Terran High Command is still debating what it should do regarding the Alora."
HD: "You're telling me, Commander. I was about as shocked as you are right now when I heard they might be related to us."
HC: "Oh, the press is going to eat this up when it gets out."
AC: "Could you not put some kind of information block so that it does not become an issue?"
HC: "If only it were that simple, Captain. Humankind is a species that abhors being kept in the dark. Especially when it comes to protecting our own. And, genetically speaking, the Alora are our own."
AC: "I make the assumption that uplifting the Alora is not an option?"
HC: "Absolutely not. They might be human, genetically speaking, but their brains are undeveloped. They are how we used to be, many thousands of years ago."
HD: "Plus, they're dumbasses, Commander."
HC: "Anders."
HD: "I'm not exaggerating, Commander. Doctor, and a bunch of the eggheads that she talked to in the scientific community, all agree that the Alora are not smart. In fact, they theorised that the Alora suffer from more than just undeveloped brains."
HC: "Explain."
HD: "It might be better if she presents the information to High Command directly, so we don't have to have her repeat herself so many times."
HC: "... I'll see about getting her approval to speak to Terran High Command directly. Good work, Specialist Anders."
HD, witheringly: "It's just Dave now, Commander."
HC: "Then I insist you call me Nathaniel, Dave."
HD: "... You're still an active member of the Military Branch of Terran High Command. I can't call you by your first name, Commander Beckett."
HC: "... worth a try."
...
Alien Doctor: "So, as you can see on the various displays, the Alora seem to have been taken somewhere between 1900 and 2700 years prior. The tissue cell samples have undergone some degradation, but the similarities are close enough that it is unmistakable."
High Commander 1: "What can be done from our end, Doctor? If a humanitarian effort is necessary to shepherd our wayward flock back home, then we will spare no expense to bring our otherworldly cousins back where they belong."
AD: "And that is where the problems begin. They are different enough to be considered a new species or subspecies of humans. There is no legal precedent for the annexation of an entire planet and its people, especially if the so-called natives are not the natural inhabitants of the planet, outside of wartime."
High Commander 2: "We can send an appeal to the Galactic Community's High Council to try and get permission to bring them home. We don't need to take control of the planet."
AD: "Next, the issue of their mentalities. Their brains, as well as their bodies, are not as developed as humans in your current forms. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that they more closely resemble homo erectus than homo sapiens.
High Commander 3: "So they will need to be rehabilitated, as well as taught to be more like us."
AD: "I do believe that you humans are not listening to the words I am saying. There are too many dangers when it comes to the uplifting of a species, and the Alora are dangerous enough without giving them the ability to think like a human."
HC1: "Thank you, Doctor, but this will not be the first species we have uplifted in our history."
AD: "I have read your history, High Commander. Both of those attempts ended in failure."
HC2: "But these are humans, Doctor. The genetic profile is close enough to our own that uplifting shouldn't be a problem."
AD: "Calling it a subspecies of humanity is enough, High Commanders. Have you considered any of the moral implications of doing what you are doing?"
HC1, HC2 & HC3: "..."
AD: "You intend to take these young humans from the only home they have ever known, into a world that is so much bigger than they could have ever possibly imagined. A huntegatherer species who haven't even managed to master fire yet, and you want to take them into a world where even fire is considered obsolete? At best, they will collapse under the weight of the comprehension of their own minuscule existences, or at worst, wage war against every sentient species simply because they can."
HC1: "... what is your recommendation, Doctor?"
AD: "The same as it has always been; leave them alone, and let them evolve on their own. One day, when they reach the stars, they will have allies who share their own forms and will defend them to the death; but for now, let them grow on their own."
HC1, HC2 & HC3: "..."
HC1: "... you have given us much to think about, Doctor. The verdict will be delivered to all Humanity by day's end."
...
HD: "It's good that you managed to get your argument across, Doctor. I can't imagine how badly it would have gone for everyone involved if they decided to go through with their plans to uplift them."
AD: "I am surprised, Human Dave. I would have thought that you would side with them."
HD: "Just because I used to be one of them doesn't mean I have to agree with the decisions they make."
AD: "Human Dave. As is a common saying amongst your people, 'once a soldier, always a soldier.'"
HD: "Well, then, words that no Cradelian will ever say, 'Wow, that was cheap.'"
AD: "That was a 'low blow,' Human Dave."
HD: "I only give as good as I get, Doctor."

2023.05.30 10:13 maximusaemilius Humans are way harder to kill with poison than one might think...

Another galactic summit, more issues to deal with, and more problems to discuss, not the largest being the Burg war, and the attack on earth. Though it had been thwarted by the planet's natural hellish landscape, there were still discussions to be made about whether the Rundi and the Vrul would help to provide a defense Nexus to the remaining planets. As well as disaster relief on the Gromm home world.
The GA summit chambers at the Rundi home world were, once again, rife with alien lifeforms. It was also, once again, rife with Rundi underlings who were trying very hard not to freak out with all the duties that were being placed on their backs.
At least one thing was made clear this time, there was no point in getting human food for the summit, since the human delegates always insisted on trying all the other alien food. Leave enough of the nectar orbs from the Drev home world out, and that seemed to keep the humans happy enough.
Dr. Krill accompanied the commander into the summit, as was usual.
Sunny was not with them today, seeing as she had work to do back aboard the ship.
That left just the two of them.
Felt almost like old times.
The captain was dressed up in his fancy UNSC uniform, and as such, he was obligated to behave.
Apparently behaving didn't mean avoiding arguments with his most important doctor, who –despite being a complete genius– was hardly capable of getting the captain to agree with him.
"I just think that there should be better security at these things. All of the most important people in the galaxy are here."
"Krill, there is an entire armada outside, I hardly think we need to worry about being attacked by the Burg. Besides, their attack on earth completely broke their spirits and they have retreated back to their own space. We haven’t heard anything from them in a month now… There is no way they would try getting in here."
Krill crossed both sets of arms,
"I disagree, commander. I have been looking into human history of warfare, and I think that a spy could easily-"
*"Krill calm down will you. Besides, spies rely on the fact that you can disguise yourself to look like the other side. The Burg are so fugly that they'd be noticed in half an instant.
They came around the corner, and the commander was nearly knocked onto his back as an Iotin brushed past, hurrying from the banquet hall.
The commander tripped back into a wall,
"Woah watch... yourself."
The Iotin disappeared around the next corner, and the commander looked after him with a frown.
"Didn't know those guys could move that fast. Wonder why he could be in such a hurry?”
Krill waved it off as the commander poked his head into the banquet room,
"Oh look, pink orbs!"
"Commander, don't you think we should wait until after the summit, when the food is being served?”
The man waved a hand,
"Oh no one will notice one or two of them missing."
He quickly snuck into the room and Krill rolled his eyes as the man came out munching on one of the pink fruits.
”Maybe three? I mean four orb fruits are not much right?”
"And they made you leader of the fleet?”
"Yes. Also that means I deserve at least five orb fruit… Also, technically they are thinking of making me leader of the entire Galactic armada, but I digress."
"Lord help us all."
The captain made a face.
"What? It's true!”
The man shook his head.
"No, not you, this fruit tastes... Weird."
"Good weird or bad weird?”
He shrugged and took another bite.
"Weird… but not bad enough for me to stop eating it, so good weird I guess?”
He stuffed the rest of the orb into his mouth and licked the juices off his fingers.
Krill sighed,
"I still can't believe they would choose you."
"Better believe it."
The two of them walked into the main conference chamber to sit down with the other delegates. The human delegation was near the top tier, and so that is where they went, taking a seat just to the right of the Rundi chairwoman's box.
The entire room was alive with the sound of alien life.
Commander Vir leaned over to speak with one of the delegates and Krill was left to watch the room.
Most of the delegations were here, though the Iotin delegation had arrived late. Seemed strange considering he had seen one of their number not long ago.
The light dimmed a couple of times, and the chairwoman took her pedestal and began to greet the delegates. Krill looked on politely as was his want, though he wasn't entirely interested in the whole thing.
The charwoman could be rather long-winded when she got going.
He sat there through a good few minutes of it, glancing over at the other human delegates on occasion. Vir looked almost sleepy, though that was almost to be expected, he was never very good at politics, even though he was involved in them so much.
He turned back to the delegation.
The commander shifted uncomfortably in his seat during a discussion about intergalactic trade laws, and Krill looked over again.
The man had taken to licking his lips repeatedly.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah fine, just thirsty."
He muttered, Krill let it go, though something made him turn back not to long after. The human was rubbing at his mouth, which appeared red, though he supposed that was supposed to be expected. Little lines of sweat were trickling down from his hairline.
He scooted a bit closer.
"Commander, are you feeling alright?”
He was waved off,
"Yeah, I'm ok, it just got a little hot in here as all... Feeling kind of... Faint. Maybe a little nauseous. I am sure I'll be fine. Probably just need something to eat."
The talks continued, but Krill wasn't focused on them anymore. The commander was not looking very good. He was sweating enough that the collar of his dress shirt was almost soaked. The tint of his face had gone from healthy blush to a yellow parlor. He looked as if he was about to pass out. A few of the other human delegates had started to notice.
Someone placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Commander are you feeling alright."
"I... I think I... Just need to... Walk around."
His voice was slurred.
"I don't think that's a good idea commander?"
Krill said turning his head to face him.
His pupils were unusually wide, despite the dark space around them.
*"The human was breathing hard now, one hand over his chest. His dry mouth from earlier was gone, replaced by saliva production so excessive he was having to clear his mouth every couple of seconds.
He looked at Krill, and the expression on his face was enough.
"I think I'm going to be sick."
The other delegates had leaned over, sensing the commotion, and they stood to let Krill and the commander pass as he stood and wobbled his way towards the stairs.
Krill could sense something was wrong almost immediately.
Dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea…
"Someone, help him walk."
Krill ordered, not caring about the delegation anymore.
Their sudden movement had caused a bit of commotion on one side of the room. The commander paused on the stairwell, and instead of turning towards the exit, he turned towards the delegation floor. Krill tried to grab him, tried to stop him, but the human – even in his weakened state – was still too strong.
A muttering had grown up around the crowd as he staggered onto the floor.
The chairwoman stopped speaking looking on in confusion.
"Commander, are you alright?”
The human paused at the center of the floor.
Everyone in the room was now watching him.
In the main lighting he looked absolutely horrific.
He was so pale his skin was almost yellow. The skin around his mouth was red. Sweat drenched the side of his face. He was drooling so badly that it was, at this point, impossible to control.
"The... food... Has been poisoned."
He choked out through heaving breaths.
And then he collapsed to his knees, vomiting violently on the white marble floor.
The entire delegation stood, shock and uproar filling the room. Krill ran over to help the human whose arms and hands were shaking as he tried to hold himself up.
The sight was horrifying. Saliva dripped in strings from his mouth. His clothing and hands were stained pink from the orb fruit from earlier.
Krill remembered he said it tasted weird.
Could he really have been poisoned?
A couple other human delegates vaulted over the railings and onto the floor, grabbing the man by the arms as his strength began to fail him. His body was shaking violently now.
Krill practically scream-ordered one of the assistances to grab his medical kit number three B (the one for poisons and toxins)
The entire room was in an uproar.
Krill jammed his finger at the Iotin representatives,
"Don't let them leave!"
The Iotins stood in shock as the delegations turned on them.
The Drev delegation, weaponless, still managed to make a circle around the group.
"Someone, go grab the food, and get me a sample!"
The commander had been rolled onto his side. His body continued to reject whatever toxin it had been given, though Krill desperately tried to avoid him aspirating and choking. That only got harder once the man began to cease and convulse. He had to reduce the absorption, but he also needed to keep the man from throwing it back up.
His kit was open on the floor, and he had the others help him with the tubes and medication. Adam wouldn't be helping him now, so he would have to get directly to the stomach himself.
He had one of the other humans hold him, as he inserted the tube and began with the activated charcoal. Hopefully that would be enough, before they got test results back. One of the Rundi came sprinting into the room, holding one of the pink orbs, handing it over to one of Krill's assistants who was ordered to test the fruit with one of the testing strips.
They did as told and the entire group waited for the results.
When the strip turned blue, Krill knew what it was.
It was at least similar to some toxins he had seen before and attacked the central nervous system in humans through absorption in the gut. The dosage had been too high however, and while the human could potentially choke to death, much of the toxin had already been rejected by the body.
"Someone cut open his sleeve."
The uniform was ignored as the sleeve was cut open and Krill placed an IV reaching into his kit for the antitoxin.
"You... Just have that lying around?"
One of the other humans asked and Krill nodded.
"I work with humans. I expect them to ingest stupid things that could kill them on a regular basis."
He was calm on the outside like a doctor should be, but on the inside, he was panicking horribly. The commander was not looking good.
But he placed the IV and made the injection.
"Someone test the other food. I want to know if this was planned for just the humans or for the entire delegation.”
His orders were quickly followed, and they found the toxin in almost every dish that had been in the banquet hall.
"You should be glad it was the human who took it first."
Krill was saying, the chairwoman asked:
"Why is that?"
"Because, the human body is the only one that would have noticed the poisoning before it was too late. The human brain responds to toxins that affect the central nervous system with dizziness and nausea. For any other species, you would have been dead before the symptoms kicked in."
On the floor the human convulsions had stopped. His heart rate was decreasing now, but Krill was keeping an eye on it.
The Iotins were still looking around in panic as the Drev glowered at them.
"What is the meaning of this?”
Their leader called. Krill turned on them anger in every line of his body,
"We saw one of you leaving the room before we entered, and they were in a hurry. So, forgive me if I am a little suspicious."
More uproar, but the Drev kept the delegates in check.
”Come on, commander."
Krill muttered. If he was going to wake up, it would be in the next few minutes, if only for a little bit.
One of the other humans had ripped open his uniform jacket, removing his tie and pulling the coat off, discarding it to the side. Krill was more than grateful for their help. Even more pleased when the commander opened his eyes bleary, his pupils almost back to normal.
"What... happened?"
He slurred,
"Congratulations, sir! You saved the entire delegation from death by poisoning. You're a hero!”
He groaned,
"I don't feel like one."
He leaned his head back onto the floor.
"Catch the bastards who did this for me will you?"
He licked his lips,
"I'm gonna pass out again now."
And then he did as promised.
Once again, the human body had managed to save the day.
Because as it turns out, humans are actually a lot harder to poison that one might first assume. Give them to high of a dose, and they will throw it up, give them too low of a dose and it won't kill them.
Plus, the human body is very good at letting everyone know when something is wrong.
It is especially difficult to poison a human when their best friend is an experienced doctor.
Whoever had done this, had not succeeded in their end goal.
And they wouldn't likely be free for long.

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

Top 10 Tips To Beat The Facebook Algorithm & Boost Your Reach post and reels
https://preview.redd.it/guiehwpl8x2b1.png?width=2125&format=png&auto=webp&s=c6d35805b36c6844eda02ef7012ec80811a18b2b
Introduction
You've probably heard that the Facebook algorithm is changing and that it's become more difficult to reach your followers. Don't worry, though! We've put together a list of our top 10 tips for boosting your reach and getting your message out there.
Build Your Community in Groups
One of the best ways to get around the Facebook algorithm is to build your community in groups. This way, your posts will reach a limited audience (the people who are in your group), and you'll be able to more easily control the content that's being shared.
This also gives you a place to connect with your audience on a deeper level, cultivate relationships, and provide valuable content that they can't find anywhere else. Not to mention, groups are a great way to drive traffic back to your website or blog.
Leverage User-Generated Content
One of the best ways to beat the Facebook algorithm (https://www.theiotacademy.co/blog/how-the-facebook-and-reels-algorithm-works) is to get your fans and followers to generate content for you. When users create content, it's seen as more trustworthy and authentic than anything you could create yourself.
So how can you get your fans and followers to generate content for you? Here are a few ideas:
  • Run a contest or giveaway and ask users to post about it on their Timeline or upload a photo or video.
  • Ask users to send in photos of themselves using your product or wearing your clothing line.
  • Run a poll or survey and ask users to post their responses on their Timeline.
  • Collect user-generated content on a dedicated tab on your Facebook Page.
Include Stories and Reels in Your Posts
Stories and reels are essential tools to increase your reach as they both get priority placement within the algorithm. Including one or both in every post gives you more visibility and a greater chance of being seen since Facebook wants to make sure its users don’t miss anything important. Plus, adding a visual element to your posts can help draw attention from people as they scroll through their feeds.
Another perk of stories and reels is that you get more control over how much content you share. You can break down an article into a few stories over multiple days or create fun video updates with reels. Repurposing old content in creative ways can help keep your followers engaged and make sure you’re consistently putting out content that resonates with them.
Automate Post Scheduling
When you post regularly, you’re making sure that your content is consistently front and centre on your audience’s feeds. Automating post scheduling also allows you to make sure that you’re always optimizing the days and times of day when your post will be seen by the most people.
You can do this both manually or through a scheduling tool like Hootsuite or Later. This process needs to be well thought out—you don't want to bombard your followers with too many posts at once, but also don't want them to miss out on important content because you haven't been consistent about sharing it.
Furthermore, it's important to mix up the types of content you're sharing as well—Instagram is great for short videos, Reels, GIFs and more, so don't miss out on the chance to spread creativity! Automated scheduling gives you a good way to plan with a variety of posts that will keep your audience engaged.
Tag Relevant Accounts and Add Hashtags
Tagging relevant accounts and adding hashtags is one of the best ways to beat the Facebook algorithm and boost your reach. This will help you expand your reach to new audiences and are a great way to engage with the people who are already following your content.
When tagging relevant accounts, make sure that you include people who have similar interests as you, as well as people in the same industry. You can also tag other pages that feature similar content, as this can help you get seen by more people.
Adding relevant hashtags is another great way to reach more people who might be interested in your content. Just make sure that you limit your hashtags to 10 or fewer so that they don’t overwhelm your post. And remember, the most important thing is to keep it all relevant to your post and audience!
Utilize the Boost Button for Maximum Reach
When you want to boost your reach and get your posts seen, the “Boost” button can do wonders for you. This lets you pay for more people to see your content, by showing it ads before, during, and after it’s posted.
You can target a very specific audience with this tool, and specify who should see the post. This is a great way to make sure that only users with your target demographic are shown your post. Plus, you can use Facebook’s detailed analytics technology to track how successful the boost is and see if it had a positive or negative effect on engagement.
So if you want people to see your posts and engage with them, the Boost button is an easy way to make sure that more of the right people are seeing them.
Create Polls and Surveys to Engage Users
Social media platforms want posts that people want to engage with. So if you want to get in the good graces of the algorithm and get your posts seen, polls and surveys are a great way to do this.
Creating a poll or survey helps foster engagement on your page, as it gives people an opportunity to express their opinion. Plus, it encourages users to comment in numbers, which signals to the algorithm that your post is engaging and worth paying attention to. Not only that but you can learn more about what type of content resonates with your followers, so you can continue to create content they’ll love.
Creating polls and surveys is easy; just use the Polls option in the Create Post field. Simply select “Create Poll” from the list of options, type in your question and answers, hit publish and watch as your audience responds!
Post High-Quality Content Regularly
The ninth tip for conquering the Facebook Algorithm (https://www.theiotacademy.co/blog/what-are-google-algorithms-and-history) and boosting your reach is to post high-quality content regularly. It's important to remember that you don't have to post something every day, but you should strive for consistency in your posting schedule so that your followers know when to look for new content from you.
When it comes to quality content, think about what would be of value to your followers. Consider creating posts and reels that offer helpful tips or tutorials, engage in conversations with relevant parties, and maintain an inviting atmosphere with witty comments and thoughtful responses.
By consistently posting high-quality content regularly, you'll not only increase your reach but also keep your followers engaged and coming back for more – which will ultimately help boost your chances of beating the algorithm!
Conclusion
So, what are you waiting for? Start implementing these top tips to boost your Facebook reach and see better results from your Facebook posts. Keep in mind that it may take a little time to see the full effects, but as long as you keep following best practices and stay up to date on the latest algorithm changes, you should start seeing better reach and engagement from your Facebook posts in no time.

It seems like every post they write gets tons of comments, attracts their exact customers, who happily try their product, shop at their store, or talk to their sales team.
Some of these marketers even write recap posts outlining six or seven figures of revenue attributable to leads from the blog.
But most blogs aren’t anywhere close to this.
For most marketers, the blog is a “placeholder”: it exists because they think they should have one, but it only brings in a trickle of traffic, very little comments, and fewer customers.
They end up spending most of their time in other channels, and often begin to resent the need to “publish regularly” (as we’ll show below, that’s not necessary).
For these marketers, content marketing is an expense — but perhaps more toxic, it’s a mental burden.
If you’re blogging for yourself (solopreneur, small agency owners, etc.), you begin to question whether it’s worth it and what you’re doing wrong.
If you’re doing content marketing inside of a company (as a consultant or an employee), you’re well aware that it takes time and money to run the blog, hire writers and pay developers. You may be working hard at it, but the results aren’t coming and meanwhile the CMO and CEO are questioning the ROI of your efforts.
If they pressed you, you’re not even confident you could defend the ROI.
Or, if you’re getting traffic, it’s often not the right kind of traffic: you’re attracting the wrong audience or you’re not seeing any conversions coming from it.
So what are successful bloggers and content-focused companies doing that others are not? What do the marketers inside those companies know that everyone else is struggling to find?
The key is systems.
Getting a steady stream of ideal, ready-to-purchase customers requires a system:
  • A system for writing content that attracts the right traffic
  • A system for turning that traffic into leads
  • A system for diverting some of that traffic directly to a store or pricing page
  • A system for growth
  • A system for turning email subscribers into customers

Our Journey

We didn’t always have systems for attracting the a steady stream of target customers to a blog.
It took Benji years of trial and error, reading, and building relationships with experienced marketers to learn systems for what worked.
Once he found that though, he first grew Vistage’s blog from 1,000 to 20,000 uniques a month in one year.
He didn’t just get any old traffic either, the blog was able to attract CEOs from companies with $5M or more in revenue, and convert them to members of CEO peer groups (Vistage’s “product”) all over the country while lowering the cost per lead by 600%.
Then, Benji did this again at ThinkApps, an app development company.
When he started as Head of Marketing, ThinkApps had no blog. Plus it was in a technical niche — he had to write about building great web, mobile and wearable products, and attract product managers, CTOs, and CEOs from fast growth and enterprise companies.
By implementing proven systems to attract the right audience (startup CEOs, product managers, and developers looking to build an app), he was able to grow their blog from 0 to 12,000 organic visitors in 6 months, and 0 to 35,000 unique visitors in 6 months.

Introducing the Customers from Content System

While we’ve been busy doing everything you’ve just read above, we’ve been testing dozens of content types, promotion techniques and conversion tactics, and we’ve distilled it down to a 6 part system for getting a steady stream of customers through content.
We call it the Customers from Content System and we’ve developed a complete online video course to teach it to you.

What You’ll Learn in Customers from Content

Customers From Content is a 6 module video course, fully online, that you can access from anywhere anytime you like.

Module 1 – Know Exactly Who to Target

Most content marketers don’t have a deep understanding of who they’re marketing to. This handcuffs them to producing crappy fluff content forever. After this module you’ll have the skills to avoid this trap and level up your content.
  • We walk you through detailed examples of mirage content vs. high quality content and breakdown the difference
  • You’ll immediately start understanding what makes good vs. bad content, and your creative wheels start turning
  • You’ll learn how to narrow down and identify the specific customers for which you should generate content.
  • You’ll learn our process for getting super deep on understanding the pain points of your best customers
  • You’ll learn the specific user research tactics we use to get customer information

Module 2 – Creating Content That Stands Out

Here you’ll learn our system for getting beyond “me too” fluff content (like listicles), and produce stellar, specific content that your ideal customers will bookmark, email to each other and share.
  • You’ll learn the 6 content frameworks we use for ourselves and our clients
  • You’ll know what each framework does and when to use it
  • We’ll dive deep into our “sales funnel” framework so you’ll know when to product bottom, middle, or top of funnel content and what each does
  • Watch us walk through specific examples and teardown of many content pieces in the lens of each framework
  • Learn how to connect Module 1 to Module 2 and apply your customer understanding to produce content better than competition

Module 3 – Content Promotion

This is where almost everyone struggles. Almost no one teaches this (well). You’ll learn our system for content promotion that we’ve used get over 20,000 visitors in a month to this site and to generate tens of thousands of visitors per month to multiple client’s blogs.
  • Learn how to research and identify promotion channels so you can use your time most efficiently
  • Watch Benji screencast through our community content promotion process, teaching you the nooks and crannies of finding and posting in online communities
  • Learn how to get influencers to share your content without being pushy or sending 100s of spammy emails (we never have)
  • Get our honest and detailed opinion of guest posting (we don’t do much of it) and how best in integrate it into your strategy
  • Learn how we use PR as a promotion strategy, starting at the content ideation step, to dramatically increase the chances of getting coverage

Module 4 – Blog Conversions

Devesh has run blog conversion tests for sites such as Backlinko and corporate blogs with over 100,000 monthly visitors. In this module, he teaches what he knows about converting blog visitors, shares a starting plan you can adopt, and lays out a framework for you to optimize.
  • Should you nurture over email or just ask for a lead? Devesh shares how to use our spreadsheet model to know, with numbers, which route you should take.
  • Get the real truth on how well different calls to action on blogs convert so you don’t have to inundate your blog with a million annoying CTAs (we never have)
  • We’ll walk through actual examples of conversion strategies from different blogs so you can learn from them
  • When should you AB test? Devesh will share his experience and teach you when to worry (and importantly, not worry) about this.

Module 5 – How to measure the ROI of content marketing

Immediately stand out from everyone else by knowing how to attribute leads to content and calculate a cost of acquisition from content marketing.
  • You’ll get access to our cost of acquisition spreadsheet calculator, only available to buyers of this course
  • We’ll walk through how it works, how to use it, and multiple examples and scenarios
  • This knowledge will immediately put you in the top tier of content marketing knowledge, and let you convey to bosses, clients, and yourself how content marketing ROI compares to other channels
  • Without this ability it will forever be a struggle to convince the powers at be that content marketing is returning a great ROI, but with it you’ll finally be able to

Module 6 – Building a Team of Writers

At some point, many marketers will want to scale their content production. This module will teach you how. We’ve tried (and failed) with multiple techniques, but after this module you won’t have to. You’ll learn exactly what’s worked for us.
  • Learn why a content marketing manager shouldn’t be a writer and what they should focus on instead
  • Learn the pros and cons of hiring in-house writers, vs. a writing agency, vs. a team of freelancers, and why we prefer the latter
  • Learn how and where to find freelance writers
  • Learn our process for vetting freelance writers so you get the best
  • Learn how to pay and incentivize freelance writers so they continue to do great work over time

What Makes Customers from Content Different

We’ve gone to great lengths to make sure Grow and Convert wasn’t “just another” marketing blog. We made sure it’s received as a premium, advanced content marketing resource.
For example: you don’t see any list posts on our site.
Almost every post is over 3000 words.
Our course, Customers from Content is no different.
Here’s what this training program is not:
It’s not a giant list of content marketing tactics – Some online courses or in person training programs are a giant buffet. They list a bunch of tactics you could use for SEO, social media, content marketing, etc. and leave it up to you to pick and choose. Customers from Content is the opposite. In our view, you don’t need a training program to list out tactics — you have the entire internet for that. What created a step change for us was filtering the buffet table of options down to a content marketing system, so our marketing teams could do less scattered work, and focus their efforts on a process that reliably pulled in customers at a low cost of acquisition. And it was repeatable, so we could implement this for multiple clients and multiple companies.
It doesn’t cover low level tactics – Many online courses are painfully low level: for example a social media strategy program that starts by teaching you how to setup a Facebook group or Instagram account. That’s for beginners. Customers from Content is not for beginners. It’s for content marketers who know the basics (how to setup a blog, etc.) and want to be get great at building qualified traffic via high quality articles that in the end drive leads and sales. So we don’t waste your time with tech implementation. We don’t talk about WordPress setup, we don’t talk setting up SEO plugins, we don’t talk about blog post formatting, we don’t talk about technical setup of communities on different platforms. You know this, or can read it in a thousand places for free. That information is also not evergreen. We could cover setting up a Facebook group, but what if another platform is more popular in 3 years (e.g. Slack groups)?
Instead, we cover strategy and systems.
  • Not how to publish content, but what content to publish.
  • Not how to schedule social posts, but how to leverage social (or whether to leverage it at all).
  • Not how to set up a community, but how to make sure it has the best people, stays active and engaged, and produces value for members.

LO Help - Stable LO nothing gamebreaking but a few minor glitches I’m hoping someone might be able to help with
Got around 8 hours on this LO with zero crashes but a few non-gamebreaking glitches I think mostly having to do with Northern Roads and a small one having to do with CC Survival mode.
I also can’t tell if the Animation Mod I downloaded is actually doing anything. Here’s a link to a short gameplay vid: https://imgur.com/a/tM5ekJ0
It’s probably just something dumb I did when making it. I’m hoping someone can spot the mistake or let me know what patch or mod I’m missing. Gonna add a few pics. Thank you all in advance!
Also, if anyone has any criticism of the LO I am all ears!

Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and The Little Mermaid has gone from man to myth to legend. Now free, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern-day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in The Little Mermaid would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
The Little Mermaid neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in The Little Mermaid, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's The Little Mermaid.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in The Little Mermaid, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise
. "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “The Little Mermaid” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “The Little Mermaid” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. The Little Mermaid” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."The Little Mermaid " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “The Little Mermaid” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said The Little Mermaid Wakanda Forever (2022) FULLMOVIE ONLINE

2023.05.30 09:10 chetdayal Rant: 23 XC90 T8 infotainment system is crap

Switching from my wife’s profile to mine takes anywhere from 1:20 mins to 2:40 mins and multiple button presses. Very frustrating.
Seems like they are running the Google infotainment system on an antiquated 8 bit micro powered tablet in the center console hence the load time takes forever.
When we are switching off why do we have to press buttons to agree to Terms again and again. Once we have given the app permission for location sharing why does it ask for it again and again?
The Google Assistant implementation on this console is by far the worst of the six plus other devices that I use GA on.
70% of the time the response is “I am not sure how to do that” or some other bs response. It can’t even power up and play a saved favorite SiriusXM channels or radio station. I am forced to click through four levels deep from Home Screen to get the radio to play.
I feel like ripping this crap out and just putting in an IPad Pro
For a car I paid $90k this is an absolutely abysmal user experience.
{end of rant}
Other than that it’s a fine car and I love the ride.
