2023.05.30 22:31 yelsnow Italy/Sicily - handicap access

Never been to Italy, but will be visiting for a month in June with the family - 2 adults, 1 teenager, and grandma. Going to be in Rome, Sicily, Genoa, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Milan, and then Como. Driving 9 days in Sicily, but rest will be planes and trains.
Grandma is mobile but needs a walker for long stints. She has handicap plates/parking to help in the US. Is there something similar to go with our car rental in Sicily? In general, any recommendations for the mobility-challenged to access train stations, museums, restaurants? Thank you in advance.

2023.05.30 22:28 berdulf When somebody at a restaurant asks how you're doing, what do you wish you could say?

If the traffic has been crappy and the app has been acting up, in my head it's, "I'm 50, divorced, and delivering pizza and burgers. How the f--- do you think I'm doing?" But obviously I don't. I've worked in restaurants, and they're just making small talk.

2023.05.30 22:27 Deep-Art-5868 AITA for throwing away my step-daughter's stuffed animal?

Here's the situation:
I (36F) am currently on a Disney Wish cruise with my husband (38M) and his two daughters from his previous marriage, aged 11 and 15. I'll be the first to admit that the relationship I have with his older daughter is... strained, to put it mildly. We have different personalities and, frankly, I don't understand her obsession with this godforsaken stuffed animal she carries around everywhere.
It's not a cutesy, little toy - it's a scruffy, worn-out plushie that she treats like it's the crown jewels. It's been with her to every restaurant, movie theater, you name it, and she even insisted on bringing it on our cruise. She's 15 for crying out loud!
Well, we planned an excursion yesterday, some fancy snorkeling thing the girls were excited about. Guess what? Miss Fifteen decided she had to bring along that stuffed animal. Now, I tried reasoning with her, explaining that it might get wet or lost or whatever. But she just wouldn't listen, like always. She seemed determined to drag this thing along like it was her lifeline.
I may have lost my temper a bit (who wouldn't?!), and a heated argument ensued. It was embarrassing and frustrating. The other passengers were giving us weird looks. It's not like I was being unreasonable, right? I mean, who in their right mind brings a stuffed animal to a snorkeling trip?
In the end, I was so fed up, I just grabbed the stupid thing and tossed it overboard. At least now we didn't have to worry about it getting wet.
Of course, there were tears and shouting. My husband is mad at me too, thinks I overstepped, but honestly, I'm just so done with the constant coddling and the lack of respect. It was a stuffed animal, not a family heirloom.
So, Reddit, AITA for getting rid of that eyesore of a toy? It seemed like the only way to get through to her. She needs to grow up and stop lugging that thing around, right?

2023.05.30 21:55 foodconcerns Can older teens order smaller meals or meals from the children's menu in the Efteling restaurants?

Excuse my bad English, it's not my first language.
Hoi! I'm a 17 y. o. boy who unfortunately fell into the world of disordered eating/eating disorders some time ago. I'm a bit better now, I've stopped using a calorie counting app and gotten into a better mindset but it's still tough. I sometimes have small crying fits or go into panic because I ate too much, which is why I'm here.
My family is visiting Efteling soon. Our stay is 4 days long. I'm very excited, except for the food part. We'll probably go to the restaurants in the park (Pinokkio's, Polles, maybe even Raveleijn) for dinner if we have time during the day and if we don't, we'll eat at the hotel's restaurant. So, can I, a 17 year old, order kids' meals at the restaurants in Efteling? Or can they make smaller meals?
I'm asking because if someone brings a big plate of food to me, I'll devour the whole thing. I simply can't not eat it all. But then when I do clean the plate, I fall into panic because, well, I overate. It's not fun so I'd rather avoid the whole situation by just ordering a smaller meal. And honestly, a tornado potato and chicken Raveleijn style? Sounds absolutely delicious. Heart shaped pancake with fruit? Love it. Call me childish and I will not care because to me, children's meals are superior and not only from the "they don't make me have meltdowns" standpoint.
Recommendations on lunch places are also appreciated! The chat bot told me some places have "magical mushrooms" as their menu thingies, could someone explain what they are, exactly?
Thanks in advance!

2023.05.30 21:48 xicrymyselftosleepx My boyfriend doesn't know that I know he met his ex on multiple occasions.

My boyfriend (M25) and I (F23) have been dating for two years and he pursuied me for three years straight before I finally said yes to him. We used to have conversations about our personal lives very often and one day I asked him his ex's name very randomly and he told me her name. When we started our relationship and also during the middle of our relationship, I used to ask him several times to be honest with me no matter what and I also asked him if he still had any contact with his ex or if they had met during this time. He always denied having any contact with her.
Fast forward to present, it's been more than a year I discovered that he met her on multiple occasions. One day I just randomly searched my boyfriends name on Facebook and scrolled down to see some past posts but instead found his friends tagging him on different posts. They took pictures together and the ex and their mutual friends posted photos of them together on Facebook and the most shocking part for me was it was after we started seeing each other and it went for more than a year. How did I know it was her? I knew her name and her name is a very uncommon one. I also found some very unpleasant conversations in the comment section between him and his ex on a recent post he was tagged in by his friend which confirmed my doubts. I couldn't sleep many nights knowing what I knew and I wanted to confront him right away but I couldn't gather the guts to even bring this topic up.
One day we went to this restaurant on a date and we were talking and laughing like every other couples. One of his friends showed up out of nowhere and greeted him. Next thing I knew, he started behaving strange as if he did not know. He stopped looking at me or just talking to me in general. I asked him what was wrong and he said if his friends knew that he had a girlfriend then they would ask him for treat (which is one of the most stupidest excuse I've ever heard in my life). Now that I think about it, none of his friends know about me. They don't know that I exist. I never brought this issue up to him because I always felt bad for him because of his academic pressure and also because he has a sick family member at home which he has to take care of.
Now, the frustrations just keeps building up inside me and I don't think I can keep this secret anymore. I feel so bad because I've always been faithful and always tried to help him during his difficult times although he started treating me like I didn't exist. I am going to tell him soon that I know that he had been dishonest with me all this time and there is no chance for denying this time because I have receipts. Also he follows me on Reddit but I doubt he'll even see this post. I don't care. I'm going to confront him soon anyway.

2023.05.30 21:42 gorzaporp Trying to help my families restaurant to get sold...

My family owns a decent sized diner on a nice lot in a great location. They lease the property. They have a good business and are successful But cannot find a buyer to take over the business. They have been trying for several years to no avail.
My question is, where can we go or how could we advertise to sell the rights to lease the property to a bigger corporation? This would be a perfect spot for a cvs, Walgreens, TD Bank, et cetera. The real estate agents that my family have been using are mostly trying to find other restaurant. /diner owners who are looking to buy an established diner. But this route has not been working. Any input or ideas are much appreciated.

Headlines transcript:
Waltham resident Shelson Jules passed away on Monday 5/22, apparently from a gunshot that occurred about 1:30am near Lyman St. and Faneuil St. According to a gofundme set up to support his family, Shelson was also known as JJ and was a 22 year-old alum of Waltham High School. Waltham Police and the district attorney are investigating the shooting and so far no additional details have been made public.
This weekend is the first weekend a portion of Moody St. is closed to cars this year under the new "hybrid" plan that allows for outdoor dining but with more restrictions than in past years. Moody St. from High St. to Pine St. will be closed to cars Thursday evening through Sunday, as well as some holiday Mondays , from now through September 25. According to a WCAC article, business owners have mixed feelings about the new arrangement but 12 restaurants as well as the Game Underground have applied to use outdoor space.
A few more prospective candidates have pulled papers for this year's Waltham election. They include one more person who's been part of our Channel 781 News team-- Chris Hammer, who has helped us with video production, plans to challenge Councilor Harris in Ward 8. In addition Tammy Wong-Bigelow is the first challenger to pull papers for the School Committee race, Waltham Police Officer Paul Tracey has pulled papers for Ward 3, and elementary principal Stephen Duffy plans to run at-large.
Waltham Pride is happening next Saturday, June 3 on the Waltham Common. This is the third time in Waltham's history that we've had our own Pride event, and the second year on the Common. Some of last year's popular performers will be returning including Missy Steak, Evan Greer, Toast, Katie Gullotti, Rose Bello, and Zumba with Jen, along with a new drag performer Iris Laveau. Speakers will include community members from the middle school, high school, Brandeis, a local Church, and Waltham's recently formed Trans Alliance. That's 11-4 on Saturday and if you'd like to help out, there's still time to sign up as a volunteer. We'll have Nick Hammond and Amanda Kennedy on our debrief show to talk more about th event.
In this week's city council meeting, Councilors Bradley-MacArthur, Paz, and Darcy introduces a resolution recognizing Pride month and calling for a Pride flag to fly on the Common. The council voted to approve that without committee reference.
Also in this week's meeting Councilor Paz re-submitted the housing rights notification ordinance, and the council set a date for a citizen input hearing to take place Wednesday 6/21 at 6:30pm at Government Center. That ordinance was originally proposed by Watch CDC and would require landlords to give tenants in danger of eviction information about their rights. The new version Paz submitted includes language that also protects homeowners in danger of foreclosure.
Also in recent meetings, the city council shot down a proposal to make Waltham's building codes more energy efficient. The state sets standard that require new buildings or renovations to meet a certain level of energy efficiency, but municipalities can choose to adopt "stretch codes" that require a higher standard, which Waltham has done in the past. Councilor Bradley-MacArthur submitted a resolution to adopt the latest stretch codes, which was discussed at the Public Works & Public Safety Committee on 5/15. At that meeting Councilor LaFauci argued that the standards were too difficult to meet and would cost the city money by deterring people from renovating their homes. He said that "fossil fuels are not going away" and argued that it doesn't make sense for Waltham to take steps to address climate change if not all states and countries are doing it. The committee recommended the council file the resolution with prejudice, meaning they will not take action on it and no one can submit a similar resolution for at least a year. In the following meeting the council voted to do just that despite an effort by Councilor Bradley-MacArthur to send it back to committee.
Also at this meeting neighbors showed up to oppose a proposed lodging house on Robbins street that would provide shared bedrooms for about 20 people in recovery from addictions. That was sent to committee and we'll talk about that more on our debrief show.
A proposed solar plant in Lexington near the Cambridge Reservoir and the Waltham line was approved by the Lexington Planning Board on 5/17. The City of Waltham previously went to court to prevent developers from building an access road to the plant through a Waltham neighborhood, but lost. More recently Waltham neighbors organized to pressure the Lexington government not to approve the project. At the recent council meeting Councilor Darcy requested certain city department heads come to the next meeting to discuss.
There's no city council meeting this week but committee meetings will return June 5.

2023.05.30 21:15 Shrek_2_Soundtrack France/Italy GF Trip Summary

Hey everyone!
This sub was a great resource for preparing for my big Euro trip, so I wanted to drop this post as a round up for great gluten free places I visited!
PARIS
Patisseries:
Copains - fully GF bakery, amazing selection here and super friendly staff, everything I had here was delicious (and I tried way too much)
NoGlu - while my least favorite of the bakeries, NoGlu offers lunch as well, so getting a traditional ham and emmental sandwich on their baguette was a great treat. As far as their straight up baked goods though, they were noticeably GF as compared to others in town
Le Pont Traverse - this little coffee shop is operated by NoGlu and serves baked goods from their bakery. It was super close to my hotel, so we started pretty much every day here. The smoked salmon bagel was especially good
Chambelland - while it was a close race with Copains, this was my favorite of the bakeries. I legitimately couldn't tell their eclair was gluten free
Dinners:
Brasserie Les Deux Palais - this is probably the only really "tourist trap" place we went, but we were hoping to walk along the Seine around sunset one night, and this brasserie by Sainte Chapelle was just the right location. It's definitely overpriced, but if you're looking for the traditional tourist brasserie experience while gluten free, this is a reliable stop
Le P'Tit Troquet - traditional French cooking, small restaurant with an even smaller menu, but gf adjustments available for most menu items and friendly about making the changes needed
Le Saotico - this little bistro was packed with locals when we arrived, which is always a good sign. The owners are a couple and the wife has Celiac, so she is quick to assure you that you are in good hands. They make some amazing duck and had great GF dessert options
Boutary - shout out u/MagneticPerry for this recommendation because this was THE BEST MEAL of our whole trip. A caviar-centric tasting menu, tailored around my GF request, with some of the most delightful waitstaff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A true 10 out of 10 experience
NICE
Taverne Messena - this place was a godsend when we arrived to Nice at 11pm one night. They stay open until 1 am and have a special menu labelled with allergens
Pop-O-Thyme - we ate lunch twice at this little crepe spot, traditional GF buckwheat crepes can be made with almost any of their fillings, and the GF crepes are made in a separate area than the others
La Rotonde - this is the mid-budget option for dining at the historic Le Negresco resort in Nice, with the Prix Fixe menu coming in around 65 euros a person. Your GF options are a little limited on the prix fixe menu, but everything I had was delicious, and they brought out warm GF rolls that were amazing. Dinner here also gets you access to the historic hotel, which is normally reserved for guests, so make sure to check out the incredible bar as well
GiGi Tavola - Someone told us the GF pizza at GiGi Tavola rivaled any GF pizza in Italy, which I was very skeptical of, but after having spent a week in Italy I have to agree. This is the best GF crust I have ever had. Make sure to make a reservation here, and if you're a craft cocktail person, ask about the speakeasy when you pay the check
At this point in my trip, we crossed over into Italy, and here I am happy to confirm everything you've heard about being gluten free in Italy is 100% true. People are super friendly and super knowledgable, almost every restaurant has their allergen info handy, and the AIC (Italian Celiac Association) awards a seal of approval to restaurants that can the facilities and know-how to assure food safety for people with Celiac.
GENOA
I Tre Merli - we had a stopover night in Genoa and wanted some seafood. I Tre Merli is AIC certified and sits out on the port, so we figured it was a good pick. All the seafood was fresh and delicious, and they offer several gluten free pasta options to accompany any of their sauces. I had some incredible GF seafood gnocchi here
McDonalds - yep, I tried the Italian GF burger. It is exactly what you expect: a frozen double cheeseburger that's been microwaved to order and served to you still sealed in plastic. But it's safe, convenient, and a Scharr bun is gonna be delicious no matter what. It makes me so mad no one in the States can offer something that is this simultaneously convenient and safe.
FLORENCE
Hostaria Il Desco - another AIC certified spot, this one offering more upscale pastas. We got truffle bruschetta on GF bread and chinghiale pasta (wild boar, a local delicacy). This place was a healthy mix of locals and tourists, which for Florence is saying a lot, as it was flooded with American college kids the whole time we were there
Sgrano - a very popular lunch spot in Florence serves giant sandwiches prepared inside an entire loaf of focaccia, and Sgrano is directly across the street offering a GF version. These sandwiches are gigantic and filled with incredible Italian meats and cheeses. I highly recommend you split a sandwich, I had one to myself at lunch and couldn't eat for the rest of the day
Cafe Del Teatro Niccolini - this cafe offers several different gluten free croissants, store and prepared separately in the back, and is a convenient grab-and-go espresso and a pastry spot
Grom - no matter where you go in Italy you'll probably find Grom gelato. They started as a dedicated GF gelateria and got big enough to be bought out by Unilever, so they are all over the place now. While many gelaterias in Italy are knowledgable enough to be very safe about scooping your GF order, it's nice to have dedicated GF flavors and cones at places like Grom
ROME
Taliani Pastries Cafe - I had read this place wasn't fully GF before going, so I was expecting a limited GF selection, but they actually have much more GF options than non-GF. The pastries were huge and delicious and reasonably priced, the staff even threw in some little tarts for free since they were close to closing.
Pizza in Trevi - at just a few steps away from the Trevi fountain, this place is filled with tourists, but it's AIC certified and has a unique buckwheat GF pizza crust that gives it a great flavor. Despite the crowds rushing in and out, they give gluten free diners a separate placemat and bring all the gf food out on separate dishes to insure safety
Mercato Hostaria - after sitting down here and opening the menu I realized this must be the more upscale sister restaurant to Pizza in Trevi, although the surroundings here are completely different. Instead of the cramped crowds of Trevi, this restaurants sits out on a quiet piazza, but they follow the same AIC safety protocols. All their pasta sauces can be served on fresh in-house GF pasta, and everything we had here was delicious
Mama Eat Lab - there are several Mama Eat locations around Rome offering GF comfort foods (think a lot of breaded and deep-fried options), but Mama Eat Lab in Vatican City is a smaller, dedicated GF location. The pizza here was probably the least impressive of my trip, but the pasta is delicious, and they make these like breaded, deep-fried mashed potato logs that are incredible
I hope some of this was helpful for any of you planning travel, and for anyone out there with travel-anxiety due to our dietary needs, I just want to assure you that France and especially Italy are excellent places to be! I felt more safe there than many of the places I travel in the US.

2023.05.30 21:06 tongfatherr Why is Copenhagen so conservative?

I'm Canadian and lived all over Europe, but nowhere as conservative in some ways as Copenhagen. Danes eat the same food all over the place. Sandwich places all carry the same 5 sandwiches, 99% of kebab places taste exactly the same, same with pizza and burgers. The windows on buildings are all identical and an absolutely brutal design that catches too much wind or completely closed - why not adopt sliding windows? You could even keep the same look.
I find this all throughout Denmark: the furniture hasn't changed it's overall style since the 60s. Some people have argued this with me but if you look at dining chairs made back then, you can find identical brand new ones today. Same with the coffee tables etc. It's just SO homogeneous it's almost a bit scary. Zero variation anywhere. IPA and pilsner with a wheat beer mixed in. Pizza, burger and kebabs, or bagels, not much else for lunch time fast food. Paint the walls white with pine or beach wood. And Danes live to go to Italy on holiday but bring zero of if back except the love for pasta.
Why don't they want to liven things up a little? Why not some variation? Sure I'll get comments about the Michelin star restaurants....who cook food that's not in a Danish or Scandinavian tradition, or that that there's a few indian and vietnamese restaurants around. Yes, I've seen them. But they are the overwhelming minority.
Anyways, I'm just curious how a society is just happy with doing a d eating the same thing over and over for their entire lives. I guess you gotta give em credit for being content with it?
/Rant

2023.05.30 21:05 jumbinidaho How important is tripadvisor for marketing and why does it seem to suck so much?

I run a small family friendly attraction thats about 10 years old. When we first started, I focused for a few years on tripadvisor reviews and at one point was #1 or #2 for things to do in my small town. Then at some point like 4 or so years ago, tripadvisor changed their algorithm and dropped us way down the list (we now sit at #25). I tried talking to them several times and have read a number of articles on how their ranking system works but (to me) their algorithm is clearly broken because most of the "attractions" that are now above us are not even attractions (restaurants, hotels, rental places), and not only that but like 80% of them have far lower reviews, like 3 reviews compared to our 75. I thought perhaps they weight recency REALLY heavily, but nope, a restaurant with 4 stars and 3 reviews from 2019 is listed far above our 5 star listing (which hasnt had a below 5 star listing in 5 years). I would happily abandon it all together like the extortionist cesspool that is Yelp, but if you type things to do in our town it's still #1 in search results, and there seem to not really be any alternatives? I'm surprised google hasn't made something to knock these guys out since google reviews have seem to have taken over. So, how much do you care about tripadvisor, and have you had any actual success moving up the rankings?

2023.05.30 20:53 Sea-Sympathy5350 I Got My Dad Arrested

My name is Alice, and my best friend for the past 9 years is Carol, we’ve have been friends since middle school when we were both 10, she was by all rites my sister, I was an only child, and she filled the void of not having any brothers or sisters of my own. We would spend most days together at my house, she was one of five siblings, her parents managed, but struggled to keep up with all the bills, so her spending nights at my house were frequent, I’m talking about 20 to 30 times a year. My parents treated her like a daughter, my mom would even spend time in private talks with her and without me, like mother, daughter talks. Of course, me and my mom had the same type of relationship, but Carol’s mom was too busy to have these kinds of talks with her, so my mom was the mother figure to her. Carol was part of our family, and we all respected each other. When she would spend those nights with me, my dad would always drive her home the next day. When my dad would take her home, he always returned 30 minutes later, but she only lived 5 minutes away, He would always walk in with a half-drunk Slurpee when he returned. I never really thought much about it then, life went on as normal. When she would spend those nights at my house for sleepovers, my mom would look in on us maybe once a night if at all, but my dad would check in 3 to 4 times and always say something or try to join in our conversations.
Fast forward 8 years, we just graduated high school, at the end of summer I was heading off to college in another state, she was going to remain in our little town and go to the state university about 20 miles away. We live in a small town 10 miles from a large city, but our town has only about 10,000 people, just enough for 2 elementaries and 1 high school so everyone knows everyone. Carol some how always had money, but she didn’t have a job, I had money from a part-time job and my parents both had great jobs, my mom was a RN for a large hospital in the city and my dad was a partner of a law firm he started right out of college and had build himself up as the top law firm in the city. He did a lot of charitable work and was on several committees helping small businesses. I could ask for anything, but they gave me just what I needed, like a car and paying for my college, the rest I tried to earn for myself. One day Carol drives up in a used car and I asked where it came from, she replied that her uncle gave it to her as a gift for her graduation. I had never heard about this uncle, she said that he was around, but didn’t get along with the rest of her family so she never spoke of him. Carol was a beautiful girl with long black hair, she hadn’t cut it since before we met, it hung down her back all the way to her butt, she always kept it in a ponytail, you could always tell it was her even from the back because it was unique. I am a pretty good-looking girl, I have no problem finding dates or boyfriends, Carol on the other hand, never once had a boyfriend, not because they didn’t ask, she would always turn them down, saying she wasn’t ready to get tied down to any guy.
One day my mother took me out to lunch and told me that she suspected my dad is having an affair, she said she looked over the bank statements, he was taking money from their accounts weekly, between 500 to 800 dollars each Friday and never had anything to show from it. She said that she may hire a PI to help her get to the bottom of it. I said let me investigate it first, I was going to college for journalism, this would be great practice for me, my dream job was to become an investigative reporter. She said okay, I have the summer, then when I left for college, if I hadn’t found anything she would hire a PI and I agreed. We finished our lunch and told her not to say anything to dad, because it would be harder to catch him if he thought she may know anything, she agreed, this would be our secret.
I told Carol about the situation, she said that she couldn’t believe my dad would ever cheat on his family, she said that both my mom and I were crazy. But said she would help me, she said that she wanted to prove he was doing nothing wrong, but she would keep an open mind. That Saturday I followed my dad as he left the house and he ended up at the library, I walked in and I saw him in the law section reading and he was alone, I walked out and sat in my car for 4 and a half hours. He drove to a restaurant, I could see him from the parking lot as he sat alone, he had a slice of pie and a soda. He left there and just took a walk to the local park, I stayed out of sight, he just sat on a park bench and pulled his phone out, texting someone for the next 30 minutes. He got up and walked back to his car and drove home. I kept driving to kill 30 minutes before returning home, I had found nothing and was disappointed with myself, but happy for my mom. I told Carol what I seen but all she said was I told you your dad’s not a cheater. I looked at her and said this was only day one and who was he texting for 30 minutes. She said maybe another lawyer. I knew she was right, I was grasping at straws, but something didn’t feel right, I was going to continue the investigation.
The following Saturday I had to work, Carol said she would follow him and take notes as to what he was doing and report back to me later that night. I thanked her, I told her she didn’t need to get involved, but she said she felt like she owed it to our family, because of all the years being treated like a daughter. That night Carol and I met up at a coffee shop and she said she followed him to a mall and he went into a bunch of stores but never bought anything, she said he was alone the entire trip other than when he went to the food court and sat with another couple, but it appeared he sat there because no other tables were open, he just sat and ate without saying anything to the couple. I thanked her and we just had a normal evening and went to see a movie. The next Saturday came up and I followed him again and he did exactly the same as I watched him two weeks ago right down to the pie and texting in the park. Carol was just too easily willing to give up, but I wasn’t done yet. She said I was wasting my time that could be better spent studying for college to get a head start. I found this very strange, she never cared about my studies while we were in school why now.
I told her I had to work on the following Saturday, she said she would watch him again. I started to get a gut feeling something was off. I took that day off and I followed them both to the mall. I put on a hoodie that I borrowed by a guy friend, I kept the hood on as I watch and videoed them from my phone as my dad and Carol walked the mall hand in hand, stopping at stores as he bought her clothes, shoes, and they even stopped into a jewelry store and looked at rings together, I had it all on tape. When they left, I continued to follow as they took my dad’s car to a motel, and I saw him get the key from the office and signal her to join him. They both walked into the room. As I was waiting, I was livid, how could my best friend do this to our family. 3 hours later they emerge from the room, he returns the key, then they drive back to the mall, and they say their goodbyes with a long kiss. He drove home and Carol called me as she was still sitting in the mall parking lot to tell me, she watched him all day, but he just walked the mall like her previous investigation, but I knew the truth. I didn’t say anything and thanked her for all her time.
I needed to find out when it started and I just knew it was on her phone, so I went to her house and was immediately told she was in her room. I walked in to see her reading a book, I said I just met these two amazing guys, they wanted to meet up at a new under 21 dance club. She was reluctant to go, but I pleaded with her, she said she had to wash her hair and get ready. This is what I was hoping for, as soon as I heard the shower, I opened her phone messenger and started typing in my dad’s phone number, the name Michael showed up, my dad’s name is Tony. I open the texts and there are thousands of them going back to when she was just 15 years old, the first text was her thanking him for her new phone. I forwarded the entire chat to my home PC and it took 20 minutes. There were so many, I closed her phone just in time for her to re-enter the room. We went to the dance club, I said I didn’t see them, they never existed so of course I didn’t see them, so we left after about an hour. Went to get a bite to eat and drove her home.
That night I spent it going through all of the text starting from the first one and documenting them all. There were talks about how much she enjoyed sharing a Slurpee with him before he dropped her off from our sleepovers. And the car that he bought her, not the uncle as she told me, my freaking dad bought her a car. I even had proof when they had sex for the first time, when she was 16. It also was a bunch of thank yous, for paying for her car insurance and the money my dad had given her weekly, that’s why she always had money. I put this on a thumb drive along with the edited video I had taken during the day. I made 6 copies of the thumb drives, I placed them into envelopes and on the outside it was typed LAWYER IS A CHILD MOLESTER. Inside I had typed a cover sheet stating that a prominent lawyer in the city, was a child molester and the proof was in the thumb drive included.
I had one bit of revenge for my best friend, I asked her out for dinner at the restaurant I worked at, she agreed, I set the table up where her back was facing the kitchen, I went to get our dinner or she thought, when I returned I was so quiet, I walked up as she was writing a text to my dad. I took her hair as I had done many times before, she slammed her phone down on the table face down. And I said how nice it looked today, pulled out the freshly sharpened knife and a final how nice it looked, I lopped it off as she sat there, I walked next to our table as she was grabbing the back of her head, I dropped the ponytail on the ground as I stared into her eyes. She immediately tried to pick up her hair as if she could glue it back on or something, I said this is what you get for having an affair with my dad.
I had sent the thumb drives to the city mayor, the DA’s office, The police department, The local news station one to her parents and one I gave to my mother. When Carol got home the reporters were already camped out on her front lawn. When I returned home, we had news crews and cameras staking out our house also, along with 3 police cars, I watched my dad being taken out of the house wearing handcuffs. He was arrested and will lose everything. I was consoling my mom, when we got a call from CNN looking for a statement, I declined, but was told this was going to get aired tonight, so this was our chance to make a statement, but we still declined. I turned on the TV and my dad was everywhere, every station local news and network news stations. He was on the front page of our local newspaper and the city newspaper. His story was even in the New York post.
Mom and I took a long vacation and disappeared for the next month and let things calm down. When we returned my dad had moved all his clothes out of the house, now he lives in a rundown apartment trying to find a lawyer that will work for him. Carol was kicked out of her family’s home due to the disgrace she brought onto her family, Carol left our town due to shame. Nobody that I know knows where she went or what happened to her, I guess the police must know because she will have to testify against my father at some point. We are still in the thick of things, but I have put college off for the near future to help my mom as this works through the courts and as she files for divorce. We are going to family counseling and trying to piece our lives back together. My dad faces so many charges starting with child molestation because of the text when the first sexual encounter was, he is also facing charges for manipulation of a minor for sexual purposes, and other charges stemming from his affair. He is looking at a possible 10 years of incarceration. I have no feeling for either of them, they manipulated me and my mom for years, they can both rot in hell for all they did to us.

2023.05.30 20:51 PortHuronMich Recent trip a huge disappointment

Prices gone way up. Long lines at rides. The Avatar ride broke down after an we waited an hour in line. Then we found out my family’s favorite ride, Splash Mountain, is gone??? Wtf Disney? And good luck trying to get into any restaurants without a reservation. Disney World is just not what it used to be back in the day.

2023.05.30 20:42 lifeincerulean Our Perfect Little Gender Reveal For Two

We got our NIPT results back on Sunday. We checked the report without fetal sex right away and we’re low risk for everything. So I made a dinner reservation for just me and my husband that night at one of the nicest restaurants in town. We ordered our drinks (red wine for him, Arnold Palmer for me) and opened the report when the drinks came so we could toast to the baby.
It’s a boy!
The table to our right was an elderly couple. They didn’t say anything to us but they were smiling at us when we looked up. The table to our left was a family with a baby of their own and it turned out they silently paid for those drinks. We didn’t find that out until after they left, so we couldn’t thank them, but I do hope they have something good happen to them soon.
Two months ago, my mom flipped out that I told her I’m pregnant over the phone (I made a post here about it afterwards and this sub was immensely helpful). She wanted to know the gender before me and my husband found out and because of that she doesn’t know we did this. We’re actually keeping the gender a secret from all family for the time being. My mom is going forward with a gender reveal party I don’t want despite my protests saying I owe it to her. So my husband and just quietly went and did what we wanted all along - a low key reveal with just the two of us. It was perfect, magical, best night ever (and would have been no matter the gender). I’ll deal with my mom and the party later I’m just focusing on the joy I feel about my son right now.

2023.05.30 20:41 mindenginee (FL) got fired for refusing to pay for a mistake

So Reddit I need to know if anyone can explain to me if I should pursue this. My boyfriend keeps telling me to talk to a lawyer over this but I’m not sure if it’s a waste of time or not. So here it goes, I started working at a family owned restaurant near by my house bc I needed some extra money. It was sketch, but the tips were good and I knew it would only be temporary for me, in the sense that I planned to leave soon. I messed up and rang an order wrong, and at the end of the night the boss wanted me to pay for it. I told him that was not legal, and he said “if you can’t follow my rules, you can’t work here” and he wrote me a check for my tips (no cash here, tips are a weekly check). And basically told me to leave. He also said he only pays $5 an hour, when the wage is 7.98 here in Florida for serve tip based jobs. I never got an actual check yet bc I only worked there for less than a month. Is this worth pursuing? Or should I just file a complaint with the wage/labor division. Thanks in advance! I also did not sign any paperwork/ handbook, or anything like that to confirm that I knew of any “rules”,, even though his rules are illegal.

2023.05.30 20:35 Warhawks71 New Mediterranean restaurant: Petra2Go on the southwest side of Lawrence: Shawarma,Gyro Wraps, and Baklava!

Hey everyone,
I wanted to come on here to share a wonderful family-owned Mediterranean restaurant called Petra2go. It’s on the block of Clinton parkway and wakarusa in the shopping mall by Miller Mart.
The owner is a 70 year old man that has always wanted to own a restaurant. He opened up about a month ago and doesn’t get much business. He make’s unbelievable food (he has several great reviews on google.) , but he’s kind of hidden away from the rest of town.
I highly recommend his Chicken Shawarma,Hand made baked goods, and the Falafel.
If you are going out to the lake this summer or are on the west side of town I highly recommend trying it out.
He does Grubhub and Eatstreet as well.
I don’t have any affiliation, but I just want a small business to make enough to stay open.
Thanks :)

2023.05.30 20:06 Throwaway-ring I am turning resentful and it makes me crazy

First off, this is a throwaway for obvious reasons. Also, English isn't my first language so please bear with me. Please excuse me if this story is very long, lol.
My boyfriend (25m) and I (24f) have been dating for almost 3 years at this point. We are both from German speaking countries, but he has a Turkish background and I am half Turkish (but my Turkish parent is more German than Turkish at this point). Soon after we got together, I kinda moved to his country due to the distance between our home towns (which was not a problem because I was working remotely) and moved in with my cousin, through whom we've met. After a couple of months, my cousin and I had a fallout and I ended up moving in with him, he was still living with his parents at this point. This is a big deal because his parents are strict muslims. Usually, in Turkish culture, people get engaged or married before moving in together. But his parents welcomed me with open arms and I have grown to love them as if they were my own parents.
About 6 months into the relationship, he told me he wanted to marry me and that he was thinking about proposing soon - which, not gonna lie, freaked me out a little because we were dating for such a short amount of time. We talked about this and I asked him to wait until we were dating for about 2 years, to which he agreed. Over the next two years, he occasionally hinted about wanting to propose and I started to feel excited about the idea. In December 2021, I showed him my dream ring when the talk came up once again. It is a little expensive (around 2.4k USD), but he makes around 4k monthly and is currently leasing a sports car for around 800 USD a month, so I'd argue it is well within our budgets.
Last year, in summer 2022, we took a trip to NYC, which is my favorite city. He has never been and this trip was a big deal to us, as we waited for that visit for a long time due to Covid restrictions. Coincidentally, this trip happened to be during my 24th birthday as well as our two year anniversary, so I was convinced that a proposal would have to happen during this trip. We made plans to eat at a fancy restaurant on my birthday and even went to a 3 star Michelin restaurant on our anniversary - we also went to all the skyscraper observatories during sunset. Night after night, I was waiting for him to propose. On our last night, we went up my favorite observatory and I was dead sure it was time. However, he did not propose, but we witnessed another couple getting engaged. He did not understand why my mood was extremely bad after.
Right after our NYC trip, we took another small trip to Italy, because why not. During that time, my cousin and my best friend both texted me, hinting (or rather discreetly asking) if we got engaged. This made me break down a little and I cried and ended up telling him about how I was very much hoping for him to propose and how crushed I was that he didn't. He was shocked, but assured me that he was still very much planning to do it "soon", but hasn't done so yet because his parents want to have a huge engagement party in Turkey (which we both absolutely do not want to do. We want a small wedding with just our immediate family and friends in his German speaking country). He told me about how he is scared that we can't tell his parents no and this is why he has not popped the question yet, but he will discuss this with them when we get back.
Now, almost another year has passed and the topic has not come up since (apart from the occasional shady remark here and there from me). Anytime the topic comes up with his or my parents, I really cannot keep a straight face because I have grown so resentful. HE was the one that said he wanted to propose "soon", two and a half years ago.
We are almost three years in, it is otherwise a very happy, trusting and loving relationship, but he is doing nothing about the discussion with his parents. He has not talked to them or made plans for an engagement. I am so hurt by this. Two months ago, his older brother gave his wife a gold diamond Cartier ring as a push present (push presents are NOT common in Europe at all) and ever since that, a small, but constant thought pops up in my head, telling me to break up with him. I am truly at my wit's end. I know he is not going to propose this year either and he will just keep pushing it back, potentially forever, if I don't give him an ultimatum. But I don't want him to propose just because he thinks I am going to leave him if he doesn't. I want him to propose because he wants to spend his life with me and is EXCITED to make me his wife.
Is he waiting because he wants to keep his options open and will just settle for me when he realizes he won't meet anyone better? I have moved countries for him, changed jobs, helped him tremendously with his life (improving his mental health, getting a new job, becoming more self-confident). At this point, I feel like I won't even be excited anymore when he finally decides to propose and I am seriously debating whether I should leave him. I know, we are younger than most people in this sub but I always wanted to be married at around 25/26 and have a somewhat long engagement (1-2 years). What can I do?

2023.05.30 19:42 Serene-Pidgeon AITA for wanting steak at my wedding

Okay. So my wedding is next month. We got engaged a year ago privately because when my fiance and I decided we wanted engaged a close cousin of mine got engaged that week and I did not want to take any attention off of their day. So I waited six months then only told my mom and dad that I was getting married.
This was the first problem. I got a call from said cousin who was upset that I was getting engaged so close to their engagement. They've been together over seven years and I've been with my fiance almost three now. I explained that I did wait I just didn't think it would be that bad after six months. And we had our plans scheduled for the year after theirs. I tried so hard to make sure our day wouldn't impede on anyone else's especially theirs.
I want a small wedding. I want my closest family members to watch as we write our names on the marriage license and then we'd all go back to my mom's. Here's where I may be the asshole.
I love steak, and I rarely get to eat it because it is expensive and there's other things I'd rather spend money on. But I want my husband and I to have a steak for our party. But buying steaks for every member of my family I want to come, even if it's small, is too much. We have a really limited budget and anything that goes over our budget for the wedding dips into my honeymoon.
So I decided I'd order a bunch of different pizzas with different sauces and toppings so everyone could have something they would like but my husband and I are going to have a steak. It's like the one thing I truly wanted for my wedding other than being with my family and partner.
My cousin found out the news that I'd be eating steak at my wedding while he had to have pizza (bitch LOVES PIZZA BTW THEY ALL DO THATS WHY I planned on that meal.) And told me I'm being selfish to my guests.
Here's where I may be the asshole because when he called he started yelling at me that I was a selfish host and I said "well you're the most selfish family member I know so I guess we're even"
Now everyone aside from my parents and partner are mad at me and I feel like a dick. Should I just dip into the savings for the honeymoon and get steaks? They're gonna have to be on the smaller side and I'm worried people won't be able to get full.
Edit: my honeymoon is also small guys. We have three things planned. I want a medium nice hotel for us for literally a weekend, I want to go to the zoo and see the aquarium, and I want to swim. We're packing food to take with us because it's more expensive to eat out and we won't be able to cook an actual meal in our hotel. And as soon as the party is over we're planning on just heading out. There would be no steak for my wedding if I didn't do it at my wedding. But since everyone has decided I'm the asshole Im just not gonna do it. Sorry for being an asshole.

2023.05.30 19:39 sunflowerinpajamas How to stop jealousy and appreciate what I have?

Hey, how should I deal with this situation? I am middle-class, but I'm in a society of rich kids because of the school I go to. Most of my friends have fancy cars and brand-name clothes and shoes that always follow fashion trends. Fly business-first class. And when I see them, I feel so bad because I start comparing them to me. My life isn't bad. I have someone clean my house; I never have to make my bed or do laundry. I get to eat whatever I want, but not at a fancy restaurant every day. I travel abroad once or twice a year. I fly in economy and stay in a normal hotel, but if traveling inside my country, my family only books 5-star hotels. I get to study whatever I want and have many hobbies. My life isn't bad, but I still feel bad when comparing myself to my friends. How should I stop this feeling?

2023.05.30 19:39 Big-Importance2343 Should a restaurant comp good customers?

My family has a favorite local sushi restaurant. We've been going there for about 10 years. We've gone for birthdays, graduation dinners, regular weekend dining, takeout during the pandemic. They know our names, I know the owner by name, when the owner is there she always stops by our table and chats with me. We tip about 25-30% every time.
It recently dawned on me that this restaurant has never comped us anything in all these years... not a free app, not even a free juice refill for the kids.
Is this normal? Would you stop patronizing a restaurant because of this?
