2023.05.30 12:28 Time-Mud3213 I’m either an empath, have crippling anxiety or depression, or maybe it’s nothing.

Hello, apologies but this is going to be a really long post and basically a stream of consciousness, and I understand if no one bothers to read any of it. The main problem I (M 28) have is that I think a lot of these feelings are really intense and quite sad. I feel like I can’t talk to my friends or family about them because a lot of them are depressed or seem as though they have their own problems and I don’t want to burden people by making them worry about me. I think maybe I could benefit from therapy, but there is no way I could afford to pay for it, and on the NHS I don’t know how long the waiting list is, but I also don’t want to take away the place in the queue from someone who has experienced real trauma in their life when I have lived a relatively sheltered middle-class regular life in the UK.
Something I have been seriously struggling in my life since I was a teenager is fatigue and this is possibly linked to mental problems stemming from what I would call overthinking and floods of empathic thoughts created from the things I learn about the world around me and I consume from the media. I’m going to give an example of some of the things that run through my head, and if you want you can read a part of it to get the gist and skip the next paragraph.
I feel terrible for all the animals that are going to be wiped out by environmental changes due to climate change, and I feel sad that this loss of biological life means the next generations might never see the beauty of the species we lose. I feel sad for the loss of knowledge of how these species interacted with the environment and their genetics, the loss of insights we could have gained in medicine. I feel sad for all the animals trapped in huge battery farms living in horrific conditions, and I feel sad for all the people eating food that is contaminated, and I feel sad for the future issues that will come from this, pandemics, antibiotic resistance, monocultures destroying the environment, the pollution from agriculture, the loss of soil quality for future farmers. I feel sad that water and soil is becoming polluted with forever chemicals from industry, and I feel sad that resources are going to diminish quickly and inevitably lead to war and famine, which they have in many places already. I feel sad that people will turn to fanatical populism when conditions deteriorate and I feel sad they will likely vote and act against their own interests and turn on each other and their neighbouring countries. I feel sad that this has and will lead to increased immigration, and I feel sad that this going to lead to increased friction between people. I feel sad for LGBT and others who will be subject to increased persecution due to difference in cultural and imposed moral values of those that immigrate. I feel sad for the racism people will experience after immigrating, and the inevitable ghettoisation as people fail to become integrated and the exacerbation of extremism due to this. I feel sad for people of colour experiencing racism, real disadvantages and hurt due to effects of white supremacy and post-colonial systemic injustice that is constantly being diminished by certain media. I feel sad for people who live in these countries already who are being challenged, demonised for their xenophobia, that has been encouraged by some of their own media and made to feel small and wrong, however it can be justified, for legitimate concerns about the erosion of their own culture, but also the degeneration of their lives and the lives of people around them due to addiction epidemics and disappearance of industry and lack of support that has occurred in parallel with progressivism and globalism. I feel sad for trans people who experience violence and fear almost every day and whose lives and medical support have been subject to intense, extreme political battery. I feel sad for people who have had their previously concrete beliefs in gender challenged and demonised by certain media, however justified people think it might be, and I feel sad that often people find they hate a version of the other side that does not actually believe as extreme things as they have been lead to believe about them. I feel sad trans issues are being used to distract them from other real issues that affect them in a real way. I feel sad that women’s ability to have abortions is being attacked, the danger to their lives, peace of mind, punishment for sex and rape, and I feel sad for the children that will be born into terrible circumstances as a result. I feel sad that many of the people pushing against abortion do so because they feel that they are saving human lives by doing so, and I feel sad that people are made to feel as though that is a bad thing, however justified it might be. I feel sad that no matter what side of the spectrum people are on, for the vast majority, everything seems to be getting worse, quality of life is reducing, people are being made to hate each other along divisive issues upon which there seems to be no way to reconcile, and I feel sad that I don’t think that it ever needed to be that way, but people have become convinced that it is.
This is just an example of one thread of thoughts that runs through me. As you can see many of them do not affect me directly right now and it’s like I’m feeling things for people that I don’t actually know, and feeling things for people that aren’t born yet, and feeling things for people in the future. You might read this and think, yeah, there is no way in hell this guy is thinking all this crap on a random tuesday afternoon. The thing is these thoughts are not verbalised in my brain, they are abstract feelings, and each one, I hope you can see, is connected to each other. So they thread and wind into one another and what happens is I experience this huge wave of feeling and its overwhelming, it cripples me and I feel as though I am unable to do anything, if I’m standing up I have to sit down. It makes me feel like I’m drowning, and what I typed up earlier it’s like I took two hands and took a scoop and tried to distentangle and verbalise just a fragment of what I can catch. Often when I am speaking to people I end up taking long pauses to try and hear the thoughts relevant to the conversation over all the noise happening inside my head. Thankfully my friends know I am not dumb but sometimes I think it takes a long time to focus back in and conversations are becoming more difficult for me.
I guess someone might read this and think, how pathetic, this person is just feeling and thinking random shit from the news, and I’m right there with you, there is a constant undercurrent of guilt, and shame and confusion, constantly thinking why am I thinking these things about people I don’t know, why am I fictionalising and focusing on issues seperate from myself, why am I acting like everyone else isn’t also thinking about this stuff and also struggling all the time. I know other people also feel these things and they can carry on living, and they are more resilient than me, and I must be weaker mentally, or they are struggling and not showing it to me. There are also constant thoughts about things I wish I did, things I wish I had not done, so many regrets and lost opportunities and sadnesses that also wash over me.
I know it may be hard to believe but I consider myself a happy person and not functionally depressed, I look forward to things throughout the day and in the future. Every day I spend many hours painting. I try to be optimistic, in the time that I am awake I enjoy speaking to people and going out to exercise regularly for many hours a week inside and outside, and I eat healthily, with blood tests showing no deficiencies. But everyday I carry these emotional waves with me and every day is getting harder. I feel constantly burnt out, I am unable to hold a job, I feel so tired I have to sleep 12 hours a day just to feel normal. I don’t collect any government assistance because I feel guilty collecting money for basically just not having the energy to work and no other reason, though I can live off the money I save between jobs before I quit. I don’t feel like I have the energy to live anymore but I don’t want to die. I just want to go into a coma or something so I can rest without burdening my friends or family. I don’t know what the solution is but I wonder if many others feel the same and self-medicate using drugs or alcohol. I fear being put on some kind of medication that is just going to make me numb or change my personality as a solution for being me. I wonder if fearing medication altering my authentic self is just some kind of stockholm syndrome where I’ve romanticised myself and my pain but actually I am just a prisoner of my own mind unable to escape.
On the bright side, there is one time these winding and unwinding feely-thoughts have helped me in life. Once in a job I had the opportunity to manage people. I was thinking things like, well this person recently immigrated to the UK, I will schedule longer meetings with them and a higher proportion of time spent discussing personal things so that they can build confidence in their english and have someone they can comfortably talk to if they have issues and I adapt my own language so they can understand me better. I feel like I understand what their long term goals are in their careers, so I try to proportion the work given to them so they always feel like they are progressing, even if not everything is directly relevant to their goals. I take unconscious notes on response times, active times, energy levels in meetings to understand the best times to work with them, how long to schedule things, whether to cancel things, and understand when they might be struggling and too shy or embarrassed to reach out. I feel like I understand when people struggle with concepts or get stuck, so I take proactive steps to help, I am patient and understanding and make myself available to ensure people get the help they need without fear. I make unconscious notes about people’s skill sets, problems, schedules, and network people when I think they might be able to help each other when they otherwise would not have communicated at all. When I explained these are some of the things I considered when I manage people, I got promoted. Though reading this back it just seems like.. stuff you’d read in a how to manage 101 book that I never read.
I guess this is where the idea I might be an empath comes from, because it’s like when I see someone or am around people, or read about someone, I start to feel things strongly, and mainly the negative things, and I understand it might not be what they are actually feeling, its all inferred, but its inferred so strongly. I am always crying during movies, yes, even animated ones. The thing is, say someone dies in a movie, I know it isn’t real, but I am sad because I think, someone wrote this, they put a part of themselves in it, their own fear of death, their own experience of death, loss, grief, I relate it to my own experiences of grief too, and someone somewhere died or will die so that the person in this movie could die, and I am feeling this wave of emotion from that, the fiction becomes real I guess. Again, I’m aware this just sounds… dramatic. Maybe this is just how everyone experiences things and I am just verbalising and putting into words how everybody feels. This is why I’m posting anonymously, I’m ashamed I might just be describing being a normal human being, and that it’s too much for me and I think that there is something exceptional or wrong about me, when I’m just a normal person experiencing normal human things. I don’t understand how everybody else is going about their day, 9-5, when just existing day to day is overwhelming for me. I know people are struggling too, people with much worse problems than me, people with complex interpersonal issues, shit life circumstances, homelessness, people with chronic health conditions. Am I just lazy, weak? Is it silly of me to be calling myself an empath or saying I have anxiety or depression when I am just experiencing normal emotion and I am just trying to come up with an excuse to make myself feel special or for my own laziness.
I think that’s everything to get off my chest. I realise probably nobody has or will read all of this, but it was cathartic to write out. If someone does read it I would appreciate you letting me know your thoughts, any kind of diagnosis. Thank you.

2023.05.30 12:15 Tricky-Sport-139 My neighbors idk what to do

I've been wanting to post about these neighbors for a while now, but never did it, but I need to get this off my chest and if anyone has some ideas, that'd be great to.
My family (me, my husband and our 3 kids) live in an apartment building, we've lived here for 3 years. A few months back a couple moved in, it was pretty apparent pretty quickly that they're drug addicts. Listen, I'm not judging just because of that, I'm a recovering drug addict, I've been clean for over 7 years, and while I don't pass judgment on people going through that struggle, I know exactly what that shit turns you into. I'm a cigarette smoker (gross I know) and our building has an outside porch connecting everyone's front doors, and that's where I smoke. Being out there pretty often, I hear a lot of people business. I can't help it, i can't turn off my ears and if people don't want someone to possibly hear what they're talking about, they should probably not talk on the porch especially loud enough I can hear it on a different floor. So I've heard them talking about their drug use, I've seen people pull up in front of our building, them walk up for a min and then that vehicle drives off, or they get in and drive around the block and come right back and get out of the vehicle, as if everyone doesn't know what's going on. The guy carries a gun around in his hip. They get into domestics all the time, sound very physical. I've heard him talk about blowing her head off, it's scary. Someone must've said something to the landlord one time because one day they were out on the porch and saw me, they said, if you ever hear us fighting just please let us know....as if I'd ever feel comfortable to go up to their door during a domestic and ask them to be quiet. Then he says, yeah you don't love each other if you don't fight 🤦‍♀️. They also use the ground as an ashtray and dumpster. They leave butts, trash and drink cans all over the property until they just end up blowing away. The other day they left a lit cigarette in our wooden porch and one of the neighbors saw it and dumped water on it. Idk if that neighbor said something to the landlord or if they over heard me venting to my mom, but they were complaining about it yesterday. I just want to add, I keep to myself, I don't make friends with my neighbors but I also am friendly. Idc what people do as long as it doesn't affect my family. I've never told the landlord anything anyone has done except one time someone blocked us in with their vehicle. I will admit though, with these people, they honestly scare me with the gun and the aggression and everything, if I could get them out I might have done it, but I know complaining about them isn't going to do much except maybe put a target on my back. So I was outside and I overheard her say, I'm just gonna sit right here and do this and everyone can eat a bag of dicks. (Idk what she was doing but when I went down later I saw ketchup all over the porch) and then I heard her say, if you have a problem with something we're doing, just come talk to us, don't go telling the landlord. Like I said I never said anything to the landlord but the neighbor might have and they might think it was me or not know who it was so they're just being dicks to everyone 🤷‍♀️. I understand the whole, come to us first before the landlord, but for 1- they're not very approachable at all, to make anyone feel like they can go talk to them and 2- why tf do grown adults need to be asked to please not use the property as their dumpster? I've seen a bunch of people/families come and go since I've been here, but not one of them needed to be told you don't just throw your cigarette butts and trash all over the place. I remember one time, after a huge fight of theirs, asking past their door and it had eggs and wads of toilet paper all over their door, I honestly think they did it to their own door during a fight, like one of them was inside while the other did it. They never cleaned that of their door. They're just gross and so rude and inconsiderate, unstable and scary. Of course they're going to be the type of people where if you complain about them to the landlord, or if it was because they heard me venting to MY MOTHER, they're just going to double down and do it worse?
I'm sorry if my post is all over the place, I tried to be able to just type it all out without distractions, but when you have kids, you always have distractions so I had to stop and go a couple times, sorry if it's broken up because of that.

2023.05.30 11:56 treyadwimar Conceal Carry for OTF Knives in Henderson, NV

Hey guys! I come to you begging for anyone with current information. I've tried to do my research, but there are so many conflicting sources of information that it seems prudent to try and crowdsource from actual people rather than static articles online. I'm looking at purchasing an OTF knife for my girl, 2.75" with a drop point, single edge, and to my understanding this is fine if it is open carried. The wording and definitions get a little murky with concealed carry, however, and trying to get a definitive "are OTF knives considered switchblades or not" is like pulling teeth. I'm not from the area and have no experience with the laws there, and ideally I'd like to buy a birthday gift that doesn't double as a felony if she carries it with the pocket clip on the inside of her pocket or in her purse. I tried emailing the Clark County sheriff's office, but they explicitly prohibit themselves from giving out legal advice. To be honest, given how many cops I've met that aren't all that familiar with laws, I'm not inclined to argue with that policy. Any help would be appreciated.

2023.05.30 11:39 peaceful_executive Navigating the Crypto Jungle: Discerning True Gems from Scams and VC Pump-and-Dumps

Hey Friends,
Over the years, we've all witnessed the seismic shifts in the crypto space: from the very birth of Bitcoin and the blockchain concept, through the ICO boom, DeFi's rise to prominence, and now, the era of NFTs and DAOs. As early adopters and veterans of this digital frontier, we've seen our fair share of promising projects that turned out to be monumental duds, as well as unexpected successes that defied all odds.
One of the most persistent challenges we face is finding the truth amidst the noise. With thousands of tokens, new protocols popping up almost daily, and the relentless marketing machines of venture capital (VC) funded projects, how can we discern genuinely valuable tokens from scams, VC pumps, and projects destined to be short-lived?
The complexity of this question is vast. One would need to understand and accurately evaluate:
  1. Due Diligence: The ability to carry out a comprehensive due diligence process, spotting indicators that reliably signal value or potential scams.
  2. VC Influence: Understanding how to scrutinize VC-backed projects with strong initial traction that might be destined to crash after the initial pump.
  3. Regulation: Being aware of how regulatory shifts are affecting the crypto landscape and what red flags to be wary of.
  4. Understanding the Tech: Having an in-depth understanding of the underlying technology, a task often hindered by time constraints and the complex nature of many projects.
  5. Mental Models: Adopting mental models or frameworks that have consistently proven to separate the wheat from the chaff in the crypto space.
  6. Longevity: Recognizing indicators that suggest a project has long-term sustainability, beyond just the buzzwords and trends.
Each point on this list is crucial, and any of them could make or break a project. But can we really expect everyday individuals, who aren't full-time crypto investment fund managers, to grasp every single one of these factors and make sound judgments about their relevance? Probably not.
This is the core issue we are wrestling with at Xerberus. At first, our aim was to create a platform to help you understand some of these points, but we've come to realize it needs to be easier to get an overall understanding of risk and potential rewards.
We think it's time for a simple, comprehensible rating system that provides users a clear overview of a project's potential risks and rewards at a glance. Do you agree? Let's talk about this, and if you've got any ideas or insights, we're all ears.

2023.05.30 11:30 SimplyHobbit I own the base model M1 14-inch MacBook Pro and I currently believe it is the best overall laptop on the market for anyone who doesn't hate macOS & won't be gaming at all on their laptop. Am I correct?

WARNING & APOLOGIES: This is a long post (feel free to not read any of this and just answer my question in the title). I'm just trying to be as detailed as possible to explain why I believe what I believe, for those who may read it. And to just inform people of my current perspective, my extremely limited laptop knowledge and just why I currently believe what I believe about this laptop.
And firstly, I want to make this very clear that I'm not some apple shill. I own a gaming desktop and an Xbox and I love them both. So I have nothing against windows or microsoft. I've also owned many macs & windows laptops over the years. My last laptop was an asus zenbook and I loved it. And I still love windows machines and MacBooks equally. And I know there is a lot of windows fans in here, so that makes this discussion even more exciting to me. Because I really want to know if I'm wrong about this or not. Also I am no expert on windows laptops. I know a lot about MacBooks, but that's really it when it comes to my laptop knowledge. And let's be honest, there's only like 6 options in the MacBook world anyway. So knowing a lot about MacBooks isn't hard to do. So I am extremely interested to see what windows users who actually know about laptops have to say about my current beliefs.

MY EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS ON THE M1 14-INCH MACBOOK PRO:
The M2 14-inch MacBook Pro is almost a nearly identical laptop (except for a few differences I consider subtle) to the M1 14 Pro so it's nearly identically awesome as this one from what I understand. But it's $500 more, so unless someone has the extra $500 burning a hole in their pocket, this laptop is the one to go with. Also, there's a bit of a controversial topic when it comes to whether the M1 14 & 16 inch Pro's have better speakers than the M2 14 & 16 inch Pro's. Almost every YouTube comparison I've seen on YouTube all said the M1's have better and louder speakers. But then notebookcheck.net says the M2 Pro's have slightly louder speakers. So I have absolutely no idea what to believe anymore without doing some kind of testing in person with both. Either way, both have absolutely amazing speakers. And you probably can't go wrong with either if speaker quality is a huge factor for you like it was me.
I think the 14-inch screen is the absolute perfect size for someone like me who uses their laptop on their lap all day everyday. Any bigger and I don't think it would fit between my legs, which to me is what I prefer comfort wise. But I'm also really short so maybe this wouldn't be the case with someone else who was a normal height male or taller. BUT...I'm 5'4...the worldwide average for women. So I think this is at least a decent case to be made for my claim that 14-inch is the perfect lap-able size for a laptop, when considering both sexes. So I personally wouldn't change the screen size even if I could, when talking about the perfect lap-able laptop. 500 nits to me is the absolute perfect brightness for a laptop screen in my opinion. I use it 2 levels below max and it's absolute perfection for me. Although I realize a lot of people prefer their screens much dimmer, I think 500 nits is still the perfect brightness for those like me that prefer their screen on the brighter side, cuz it's nice to have the option. Whether you use it or not. The keyboard is great, travel is great, I'd assume there may be some laptops with better keyboards but I think this is still a fantastic keyboard. It's in the top 5 for best keyboards on the market on a lot of sites I've seen, so I don't know how accurate that is, but the general consensus seems to be that the critics agree with me that it's a great keyboard. The build quality is great to me, but admittedly I'm no expert when it comes to build quality on laptops. This thing feels like a tank and a rock as far as I'm concerned though. Just holding and squeezing it, it's very solid. There's zero flex whatsoever on the screen no matter how hard I try to, so this all seems like great stuff to me build quality wise. I get crap for this sometimes in MacBook because there's so many fans of the M1 & M2 Airs in there and it seems to me that they just think every laptop should be 2.8 pounds now. But I think this laptop is plenty thin & light for what is it. And I personally am not a fan of the M1 & M2 Airs at all, because of the unnecessarily thick bezels that apple put on them to upsell people to the more expensive models. Also, I've owned a 2.7LB MacBook and I can't tell the difference in everyday use between 2.8LB & 3.5LB, even on my lap all the time. The M1 14 Pro is 3.5LB & only 0.61 of an inch thick. This laptop is plenty thin and light to me for what it is. I use it everyday all day 7 days a week in my lap and I literally never notice it is there. And as for the aforementioned speakers. The speakers on this thing are breathtaking for a laptop. Their super loud and clear. I basically never need headphones anymore unless I need to be quiet. And listening to music with my roommate with them is a blast.
Admittedly, I am only using this laptop for normal everyday stuff. Web browsing, listening to Spotify, note taking etc. so if this laptop has any shortcomings in the productivity, creative or intensive spaces please let me know. Because I'd love to know that as well, just for information purposes. I have heard this laptop can handle a lot but if there's any intensive users that disagree let me know.
The only possible thing I could possibly think to change on this laptop is of course the notch. I mean in a perfect world, of course I wish it wasn't there. But the laptop has super thin bezels besides the notch. And in my personal experience, the notch completely disappeared from view after 10 or 20 minutes with this laptop. And it's like it's been gone ever since. I absolutely hate notches on iPhones but on MacBooks it's like their not even there for me personally because they are on the menu bar which nothing ever touches anyway.
But am I completely off here? If I am tell me because I genuinely want to know. It won't make me like my laptop any less because I personally love this thing and still will even if I discover it's not the best non-gaming laptop on the market. But I just want to know, best laptop on the market for anyone who doesn't hate macOS and isn't gaming on their laptop or not?

2023.05.30 11:29 Jus17173 Humans, Aliens and Madness.

Ko-fi
Captain Ferguson stood upon the deck of the Starship Galactica. His hands clasped behind him, a miniature smile tilting the edge of his lips. Behind him stood several cohorts, all of them anxious for their captain because of what was coming. The meeting between Humans and the aliens of Planet C138 did not end well for humans, whatever envoy that was sent to meet with the aliens always came back mad, stripping free of their clothing, screaming and scratching at their eyes. Seven envoys had been sent and seven envoys had come back with not an ounce of their minds containing any lucidity. Record beacons that had been strapped to the envoys always came back having recorded nothing but static noise. Nobody knew why the envoys went mad but that's what Captain Ferguson's purpose was. To meet with the aliens of C138 and return as a normal man with knowledge.
It was the first envoy that was made up of only one man. Captain Ferguson deemed himself capable of undergoing any mental strain without cracking and the cohorts behind him, men and women of his army believed in him. But it wasn't just their belief that solidified his stance, the whole of planet Earth was behind him. A solitary man on a Solitary mission. He stood looking at the alien ship parallel to his own ship, he smirked at its miniature size. It's propellers that were three sizes too small. It was in that ship that the previous envoys had entered and come out mad. It was in that ship that he would enter and return with the knowledge people from Earth were so desperate to have. With an IQ nearing 200, mentality that was shark like with grit, he would persevere where others failed and would come back to a hero's welcome. Women swooning over him and men wishing they were him.
A pod ejected from the alien spaceship and made its way to the hanger bay, Captain Ferguson made an about turn and started for the hanger bay, beside him his second in command, Sergeant Esther, read to him his vitals. "Your heart rate is normal, your body is at optimal performance, your mind is functioning smoothly and all your bodily needs have been met." She blushed at the last statement, remembering how she'd catered to one of his bodily needs in his cabin.
Captain Ferguson's smile widened. "I am at optimal level, more optimal than my predecessors."
"Sir, the other envoys were at optimal level too and their minds still broke." Sergeant Esther said as they neared the hanger bay. "You have a transponder in your left pocket, if you feel yourself losing lucidity just press it and we'll come for you."
"Nonsense, I am mighty, these aliens can't affect me in any way, I represent the epitome of what human mentality entails." He leaned down and placed a kiss on Sergeant Esther's lips. "Keep the water running warm for me love, I'll be back in a moment." He made for the pod without turning back to meet the gaze of Sergeant Esther that was glued to his back.
He strapped himself into the miniature space travel device that was remotely controlled by the aliens. They usually sent larger pods to collect the envoys but this time round they'd sent a pod containing a singular seat as if they knew the envoy will be of one man. Captain Ferguson brushed this aside as just a mere coincidence. He strapped himself into the seat and watched as the hatch closed above him. The pod lifted and made its way to the alien spaceship.
As he journeyed between the two ships, he occupied his time with breathing exercises to calm his mind, beside the transponder in his pocket he also carried a plasma pistol set to mid trajectory, incase the aliens proved hostile it would be his right to defend himself. He was lost in thoughts of himself as a one man army, firing at aliens and destroying their ship when the pod landed safely in the alien ship's hanger bay. The top hatch opened and Captain Ferguson unlatched himself from his seat. He climbed free of the pod and landed on solid ground. He was about to peer around when a hand tapped his shoulder.
He turned to meet the gaze of a being whose skin was a pallid purple. His eyes were large and his irises were vertically shaped and yellow in color. He had what seemed like small tentacles lining his upper lip and two slits that passed for a nose. Its head was oval shaped and bald and its teeth were needle shaped as it broke into a wide grin. "Captain Ferguson, is it?"
Captain Ferguson fought down his brief fright at being startled by the alien that had come out of nowhere. "Uhhm Yes." He answered, unsure as to how the alien knew him.
"I'm a huge fan of your work Captain Ferguson." Answered the alien. "My name is Todd, Todd Bohely, do you remember me?"
Captain Ferguson did know a Todd Bohely, a lanky man who'd commandeered one of the training ships back at HQ. But Todd Bohely was human, not the alien standing beside him. He grinned. So this is how they bring about madness, by incepting thoughts. But the alien was no match for him. He was Captain Ferguson, leader of the starship armada. A man with a diamond mind. "I know Todd Bohely and you're not him."
The alien tilted its head back and laughed. "Right you are Captain Ferguson, right you are. My name is long, Sethamksgauwmam. Or you can call me Seth."
Captain Ferguson nodded at Seth. "Nice to meet you Seth, I come in peace."
"Of course you do." Seth answered while raising a limb that had three fingers like stubs of cigars popping out of its end. "Your predecessors came in peace too. You humans have so much in common."
"You made them go mad." Captain Ferguson said.
"Of course I did. It's my job to ensure no human makes it to my home planet."
Captain Ferguson laid a hand on his pistol holster. So that was their purpose, to ensure humans don't land on their planet. They drew the first gun and shot the first bullet of madness, I won't have the same bullet hit me.
"Hey, remember that time we went to the Grand Canyon," Seth started. "Remember the bird nest we found with the three eggs within them? We wondered for days what bird laid those blue eggs."
Captain Ferguson recalled the trip to the Grand Canyon that he'd gone on with Todd, his friend from HQ. They'd found the bird nest tucked deep within a rock cliff's edge. The eggs had been white, or had they been blue? He wasn't sure anymore. He opened his mouth to speak but Seth continued. "It was a shame what Sarah did to those eggs, hurling rocks at them, would you imagine that? Hurling rocks at something as delicate as eggs."
Captain Ferguson clenched his hands into fists, they shook with rage at the memory of what Sarah did and the laugh that emanated from her mouth as the shells cracked. Wait, wasn't I with Todd? Who's Sarah? He shook his head from side to side. Then he smiled. "I've never been to the Grand Canyon, I never found eggs, I have never been with anyone named Sarah."
"Of course you have. Sarah is Todd's wife." Seth continued.
"No. Your putting memories in my mind, things that don't exist." Captain Ferguson stood straighter, his chest pumping upwards with pride. "You won't make me mad, I have a diamond mind."
"Of course you do, you're also compassionate Fergie." Seth said. "Fergie. Didn't your mom used to call you that? It's a shame what happened to her."
Captain Ferguson had a brief flashback of him coming home early from soccer practice to find his mother lying prostrate on the kitchen floor, blood flowing in rivulets all around her, knife in hand and deep gashes studded upon her wrists.
"She did that because of you, you know, you were always so headstrong, a single mother couldn't handle the burden of raising you, she had no option." Seth said.
*Did that really happen? Did my own mom take her life? *Ferguson shook his head again, he wasn't sure. His thoughts were too scrambled.
"Remember Todd, Todd Bohely? Your child hood friend whom you used to ride dirt bikes with." Seth said.
Ferguson recalled the long bike rides he would go on with Todd Bohely, to the beach where they would go during mid noon for the sole purpose of catching the sunset during the afternoon.
Seth chuckled. "Funny guy, Todd. Thought he could swim and chase the sunset."
Ferguson recalled the way Todd ran into the waves, leaving his bike at the shore. Kicking at the water and edging further within. He'd stood at the shore, calling to him.
"It was too bad he couldn't swim."
Ferguson was no longer on the ship's hanger bay, he was by the shore, Todd's insensate body beneath him, paramedics pumping his chest and giving him mouth to mouth resuscitation. A tear trailed down Ferguson's cheek. Wait, who was Todd Bohely? He shook his head and found himself back in the hanger bay. He reached with his right hand and ejected the plasma pistol from its holster at his side, he pointed it at the alien. Seth raised both hands.
"Woah there." Seth said.
"You're doing things to me, getting into my mind and incepting thoughts that aren't real." Captain Ferguson said.
Seth chuckled and lowered his arms. "The thoughts in your head are your own, but you can shoot the thoughts that are corrupted or aren't yours free of your mind." He smiled. "Just as Sarah did when she shot those yellow bird eggs at the Grand Canyon."
Ferguson recalled how angry he had been when Sarah had shot the bird eggs with a pistol, her laugh as the eggs shattered and the york flew free of its shell. They were harmless blue eggs. Wait, were they blue eggs or white? No they were yellow..
Captain Ferguson took the barrel of the gun and placed its end to his temple, he cocked the pistol set to mid trajectory.
"Remember what your father told you before he pulled the trigger and blew his brains out?" Seth asked.
"He said 'It's the end of the road for me, but some things are necessary if you don't want to face tomorrow's dawn.'" He quoted his father, gun held to his own head.
"Do you want to face tomorrow's dawn? To see Todd chase it again into the ocean? To hear Sarah's laugh as the eggs cracked?" Seth asked.
"No." Captain Ferguson said and pulled the trigger. Blowing his brains out and collapsing on the hanger bay's floor as a corpse.
Seth stood over the insensate body of Captain Ferguson and smirked as the captain often did. "And another bites the dust." Seth said.

2023.05.30 11:20 IamCutieBunny 19 : Looking for an older sister, more explanation in the body text

Hello, so I'm looking for an older sister cause I think/believe that an older sister is something that I need to fill the void that my mom gave me. Let me share a story to further prove this;
When I was in 9th grade, I was at my low and at risk of repeating the school year because of my failing math grade. So I was lost and didn't know what to do, I opened up to my acquintance at that time..an angel who became my inspiration and role model (she's in 2nd year senior year). We got closer each day and my grades really skyrocket from a failing 72 (F grade) to a whopping 82(I think B ?) average. After we became close friends, I noticed that I was always carrying my math notebook, motivated, as if I was fueled by a thousand lightning bolts, my chest felt lighter, everytime I breathe it's crystal clear that I can feel the air really travel to my lungs and windpipe. After she left for college, I never saw her again nor did we ever contacted each other, my chest got heavy again and I was back to my old below average self. The change was instant, like I just felt myself
TLDR Version: I had a senior high friend that helped me when I was at my low and she didn't said anything much but she got me so motivated that I started studying everyday for her. Then after she left, I became my below average self again.
Soooo that's the story, I hope to see you soon!

2023.05.30 11:12 hi_robb 49[M] - Looking for a pocket friend!

Hello,
I'm looking for as I've seen described on here - a pocket friend!
Just someone to chat to, laugh with, whinge about the crap when life throws it at us.
A bit about me.
And let’s get the elephant in to the room right away!
I’m an old bastidge at 48, but hopefully fun and not boring!
Now I’m not some kind of dirty old man. I won’t ever send nor ask for rude pics and I’m not into anything weird either.
I’m just an average guy who tries to make people laugh and smile every day. And who enjoys conversation.
So, you’re still reading? Wow and thanks, ok I’ll carry on. I might waffle a bit now…
I’ve got kids. 2 of them (boy and girl), both in their mid and late teens. They stay at their mum’s but come and go to mine as they please.
The boy stays often. The girl not so much as she’s a mummies girl. But their age does mean they almost look after themselves and I have plenty of spare time.
I work full time and have a fairly good job. But I work from home (90% of the time) and while it’s a busy job at times, I have plenty of time to reply to messages.
I am single. Have been for 6 years and I’m quite happy being so. I was with my ex 17 years prior to that.
So why am I posting this?
Back towards the end of 2021, I was asked to work with a woman on a bit of work she was trying to do on a system I’m the SME for. It was all via email, calls and video call as she works in a different office.
To cut a long story short, we got on really well and ended up becoming pocket friends. And for several months last year, texted, called and video chatted loads daily.
It was all purely platonic and there was no pressure. We’d speak about all sorts and nothing. Music, films, work, food. Sometimes just putting the world to rights. Or sharing our shit and happiness. What our kids had done. What we dreamed.
But it was nice. It was really nice and I enjoyed it.
Sadly she met someone towards the end of last year and our conversations came to and end 😢 And I’ve just muddled along since.
And I've recently realised that I missed my pocket friend. It was nice knowing someone was thinking about you. Taking the time to talk to you.
Finally, my hobbies and likes. Reading (43 books this year so far). Walking, gadgets, films, the odd console game.
My biggest hobbies are writing really bad dad jokes (I’ve got tens of thousands of them). And music. I’ve a big collection on all formats. And a good hifi to listen to it.
I’ve a very eclectic taste which spans every genre.
Dislikes are scammers, people who hurt kids, animals or woman 😡, cleaning the kitchen 😂 and cutting the grass!
Thanks for reading. I know this has been a bit war and peace. Not all my messages are. But I thought I’d be quite thorough with my intro.
Kind regards
Rob

2023.05.30 11:01 returnoftoilet Relying on memory: GMC's shaky ground

Recently, a GMC case had prioritised the statement from Patient A over documentation made by a doctor, which was used to find the doctor's fitness to practice impaired.
Without deliberating over details, I would like to elaborate about why this is shaky territory with reference to legal judgements.
A. The science of memory
The neuroscience and psychology of memory is complex; but a brief overview is as follows.
Memory, as it is understood in psychology, is not merely a direct translation of experience of phenomena. Instead, such experiences are encoded, which is dependent on an individual's own thoughts, experiences, needs, emotions, etc. In the case of long-term memory, memory will then be consolidated, which integrates the memory with pre-existing information, and then retrieved from the "long-term store" in recollection, which is not again a direct "data retrieval" but rather reconstructions of events based on the memory. There may be the insertion of new experiences into the reconstruction, things can be forgotten entirely, the reconstruction process will differ from context, etc.
To say that memory is unreliable is an understatement.
The danger of memory is not just in forgetting events, but also in altogether false memory, such as remembering things that did not happen (i.e in the form of the Mandela effect).
This article looks at 2 studies that examined false memory, particularly autobiographcal false memory, and found that participants would report that the false memory seemed real, and that observers would only be able to determine if it was true or false in about 50% of cases, which is akin to a coin toss.
B. The consequences of false memory
Because of how often legal cases utilise eyewitness statement and testimonies, if there is a lack of physical evidence this can result in false evidence believed to be true to be admitted and be taken into consideration in the judgement. A large project called the Innocence Project has numerous cases where this is the case, and seeks to overturn rulings where judgement was made on erronous evidence. Simply take a look on their website and see how many years many individuals have served imprisoned because of eyewitness misidentification. As an example, Rafael Ruiz served 24 years falsely imprisoned for rape, sodomy, robbery and sexual abuse, before being found that the eyewitness had misidentified him and was exonerated on the grounds of new DNA evidence.
C. Its role in judiciary decisions
Here I will quote ad-lib from a ruling made by Mr. Justice Leggatt in the case of Gestmin v. Credit Suisse (Royal Courts of Justice, Queen's Bench Division [(2013) EWHC 3560 (Comm); Case No. 2011 Folio 1267]).
In this case, Gestmin (a Portugese company) made investments on the advice of Credit Suisse, and invested in an investment company called QWIL which made their money largely via sub-prime mortgages in 2006-2007. After the financial crisis of 2008, QWIL shares fell, and Gestmin lost money. Gestmin later sued stating that Credit Suisse should not have recommended an investment into QWIL which was a high risk low liquidity whereas Gestmin wanted a low risk high liquidity investment.
In the case, the court deliberated on the use of human memory, and Justice Legatt commented:
"An obvious difficulty which affects allegations and oral evidence based on recollection of events which occurred several years ago is the unreliability of human memory.
While everyone knows that memory is fallible, I do not believe that the legal system has sufficiently absorbed the lessons of a century of psychological research into the nature of memory and the unreliability of eyewitness testimony. One of the most important lessons of such research is that in everyday life we are not aware of the extent to which our own and other people's memories are unreliable and believe our memories to be more faithful than they are. Two common (and related) errors are to suppose: (1) that the stronger and more vivid is our feeling or experience of recollection, the more likely the recollection is to be accurate; and (2) that the more confident another person is in their recollection, the more likely their recollection is to be accurate.
Underlying both these errors is a faulty model of memory as a mental record which is fixed at the time of experience of an event and then fades (more or less slowly) over time. In fact, psychological research has demonstrated that memories are fluid and malleable, being constantly rewritten whenever they are retrieved. This is true even of so-called “flashbulb” memories, that is memories of experiencing or learning of a particularly shocking or traumatic event. (The very description “flashbulb” memory is in fact misleading, reflecting as it does the misconception that memory operates like a camera or other device that makes a fixed record of an experience.) External information can intrude into a witness's memory, as can his or her own thoughts and beliefs, and both can cause dramatic changes in recollection. Events can come to be recalled as memories which did not happen at all or which happened to someone else (referred to in the literature as a failure of source memory).
Memory is especially unreliable when it comes to recalling past beliefs. Our memories of past beliefs are revised to make them more consistent with our present beliefs. Studies have also shown that memory is particularly vulnerable to interference and alteration when a person is presented with new information or suggestions about an event in circumstances where his or her memory of it is already weak due to the passage of time.
The process of civil litigation itself subjects the memories of witnesses to powerful biases. The nature of litigation is such that witnesses often have a stake in a particular version of events. This is obvious where the witness is a party or has a tie of loyalty (such as an employment relationship) to a party to the proceedings. Other, more subtle influences include allegiances created by the process of preparing a witness statement and of coming to court to give evidence for one side in the dispute. A desire to assist, or at least not to prejudice, the party who has called the witness or that party's lawyers, as well as a natural desire to give a good impression in a public forum, can be significant motivating forces.
Considerable interference with memory is also introduced in civil litigation by the procedure of preparing for trial. A witness is asked to make a statement, often (as in the present case) when a long time has already elapsed since the relevant events. The statement is usually drafted for the witness by a lawyer who is inevitably conscious of the significance for the issues in the case of what the witness does nor does not say. The statement is made after the witness's memory has been “refreshed” by reading documents. The documents considered often include statements of case and other argumentative material as well as documents which the witness did not see at the time or which came into existence after the events which he or she is being asked to recall. The statement may go through several iterations before it is finalised. Then, usually months later, the witness will be asked to re-read his or her statement and review documents again before giving evidence in court. The effect of this process is to establish in the mind of the witness the matters recorded in his or her own statement and other written material, whether they be true or false, and to cause the witness's memory of events to be based increasingly on this material and later interpretations of it rather than on the original experience of the events.
It is not uncommon (and the present case was no exception) for witnesses to be asked in cross-examination if they understand the difference between recollection and reconstruction or whether their evidence is a genuine recollection or a reconstruction of events. Such questions are misguided in at least two ways. First, they erroneously presuppose that there is a clear distinction between recollection and reconstruction, when all remembering of distant events involves reconstructive processes. Second, such questions disregard the fact that such processes are largely unconscious and that the strength, vividness and apparent authenticity of memories is not a reliable measure of their truth.
In the light of these considerations, the best approach for a judge to adopt in the trial of a commercial case is, in my view, to place little if any reliance at all on witnesses' recollections of what was said in meetings and conversations, and to base factual findings on inferences drawn from the documentary evidence and known or probable facts. This does not mean that oral testimony serves no useful purpose—though its utility is often disproportionate to its length. But its value lies largely, as I see it, in the opportunity which cross-examination affords to subject the documentary record to critical scrutiny and to gauge the personality, motivations and working practices of a witness, rather than in testimony of what the witness recalls of particular conversations and events. Above all, it is important to avoid the fallacy of supposing that, because a witness has confidence in his or her recollection and is honest, evidence based on that recollection provides any reliable guide to the truth.
This ruling, in my view, contextualises the admission of memory as evidence that even beyond criminal cases, there is a great deal of uncertainty and unreliability placed upon eyewitness testimony, and to reiterate, that "to place little if any reliance at all on witnesses' recollections of what was said in meetings and conversations, and to base factual findings on inferences drawn from the documentary evidence and known or probable facts".
With this understanding of how memory and witness evidence is used even in civil cases, it places greater questions in how a documented evidence was disregarded for memory, with no known or probable fact that the Doctor in question had falsified the evidence (with no prior record or any action done in the past to suggest that action), but yet the Patient A testimony, which is recalling an event 2+ years in the past, is taken as-is without question.
Particularly when actions such as suspension or even being struck off are in the hands of people who make shaky judgements and are instituitionally racist (was patient A white and hence "more trustworthy"?).
The GMC is indefensible in allowing this to happen and I fully support the BMA AGM proposal to call for a vote of no confidence in the GMC, of which I am confident it will be carried by an overwhelming majority.

"Is it an extensive educational plan that sets out the essential data and direction for setting up a program, or a structure that permits instructors/facilitators to make the educational program? Is there proof of the educational plan's viability when carried out well? Are assets accessible to help staff in executing the educational plan?" she makes sense of.

For instance, a library, rec center, and pretend and tangible corners," she adds.
Homeroom structure is likewise one of the main elements while picking a nursery. "In a Montessori educational program, for example, Leads Early’s, the homeroom is separated into five explicit learning regions and gear is on low-level racks, making it effectively open for youngsters. There's an understanding corner and an easel in every study hall to empower freedom," she says.
"A study hall ought not be excessively occupied or jumbled as it very well may be diverting for youngsters, and there ought to be sufficient room with the expectation of complimentary progression of development. It's vital to check class sizes and the proportion of grown-ups to kids, with clear rules accessible from the Service to lead this,"
The nursery climate ought to be protected, warm, inviting and invigorating, for youngsters, yet for guardians also.
"A catchphrase with regards to assessing a climate is that it should be 'empowering'. It ought to help children's requirements, give open doors, rouse and start interest. Early Training should be exploratory and children ought to enter their homeroom consistently and see new exercises and thoughts,".
"This additional extraordinary learning climate can be conveyed by an energetic and exceptionally gifted instructor who comprehends youngster improvement, one who's searching for different ways of broadening learning. I likewise accept that an excellent nursery looks to give a learning an open door at each second and in each discussion. Learning is all over," she adds.

Educators and staff

Nursery staff assume a fundamental part in your youngster's turn of events and schooling, and initial feelings are critical.
"When you stroll into a middle, you ought to get a quick 'feeling' about the spot. Do staff look cheerful? Do they make proper acquaintance and welcome you? Is it safe to say that they are effectively drawn in with kids? At Splendid Starting points, we typically take a visit with imminent guardians at our most active times so they can see staff and children completely inundated,".
"While visiting the office, see how staff associate with children and whether they look satisfied. Address them and check whether they're ready to make an association with you. Ensure you get some information about educators' capabilities and experience,"
"Subsequent to checking qualifications, I investigate potential new educators' fundamental beliefs and measure them against those of our nursery school. Homeroom strategies can't be educated, however warmth, persistence, inspiration and commitment are intrinsic," she says.
"I figure guardians ought to search for nurseries with a low staff turnover, strength inside the supervisory group and great capabilities across all the staff - including support, she adds. "These elements genuinely have an effect."

Educational cost

Perhaps of the greatest variable guardians will consider is whether a nursery merits the educational expenses. Normally, a kid's schooling is, however the foundation they become a piece of requirements to mirror that - and it's no simple choice to make.
"Most Early Years educational plans consider some adaptability, so search for the outcome when a kid has gone through the framework. What objectives have they accomplished in proficiency and numbers? How would they foster individual, social and close to home abilities? Does the nursery offer extra advancement exercises like dialects, music and actual turn of events? Another significant perspective is check the way that they speak with guardians in regards to the kid's learning and objectives accomplished,"
We encourages guardians to pay special attention to an extremely low expense structure, and to not consequently go for the less expensive choice. "Nursery instruction is the underpinning of your youngster's future. The advantages will be not difficult to see when they change with certainty, enunciation, confidence and a major tool kit of mastering abilities. Great nurseries are famous and popular for good explanation," she says.
Abu Dhabi's Splendid Starting points, the more guardians see, the better of a choice they would have the option to make. "I accept guardians ought to visit various focuses prior to choosing which one would be the best fit for their youngster. Informal exchange proposals go quite far, as well. Guardians need to consider their own spending plans while concluding over educational cost rates that suit them best, however be careful - the most costly or present day looking doesn't be guaranteed to mean the best," she makes sense of.
Blossoming Buds' Boulos urges guardians to focus on wellbeing and security. "Whenever needs are set, a reducing interaction will assist with finding the right Early Years setting. There sure are numerous choices to browse on the lookout, which goes with choice making for guardians one piece of the complicated riddle that is their work and everyday life," she says.
"Guardians might need to check locales which have a registry posting of the relative multitude of nurseries alongside their educational expenses, area and surveys. Besides, informal exchange goes quite far, and getting some information about their experience inside a specific setting can assist with the dynamic interaction," Boulos adds. "Pick carefully."

Basically

"Tight down your decisions originally founded on your necessities. Assuming you're working guardians, you would require longer functional hours, perhaps transport offices and nearness to your home would be significant, as well. See esteem presented at the cost: does the nursery give any extra-curricular exercises inside the charges, and are any dinners or tidbits included?" says the Leads Early Principal.
"Search for foundations that have been around for quite a while and have a history. Generally, they're the ones you know about habitually by overhearing people's conversations. The main models would be staff as your kid will be in their consideration, so get some information about their experience, capabilities and responsibility,"
Security is fundamental as well: are there qualified medical caretakers anywhere nearby and is staff emergency treatment prepared? Presumed nurseries ought to have approaches and methodology set up for everything, so request to see them.

2023.05.30 10:25 sugar-soad I was recently crowned America's Next Top Serial Killer (part 1)

I awoke with a thumping headache and forced myself to sit up. The pungent stench of urine and god knows what else immediately assailed my nose. I looked around me to see dozens of people wearing the same clothing surrounding me.
We appeared to be in a small cramped location that didn't appear to have any toilets and unfortunately no ventilation. There was a section of the room which was empty and I could tell by the contents of the floor that this was the cause of the smell. The lack of toilets had meant that people had no choice but to improvise.
I gazed around at the other people that were around me and they all looked terrified. I tried speaking to some of them but they just hushed me and indicated for me to leave them alone. They were a mixture of people with every age group and ethnicity included. I could see one woman who looked like she was in her nineties and was using two walking sticks to stand upright.
We sat there for a few more hours with the stench becoming more and more unbearable. A loud buzzer went off which resulted in a few people screaming in shock. We watched as a door slowly began to open in the corner of the room. I was the first one to get up and carefully made my way forward. I peered out to see what appeared to be a large open factory building outside.
I contemplated staying where I was, but I was getting more and more lightheaded with the smells so I decided to leave. The others slowly began to follow me out and we all stood clustered together.
A screeching noise of feedback emerged from speakers which I finally spotted dotted around the building. A voice came over the speakers and announced "Welcome to the latest season of America's Next Top Serial Killer".
We all stood there in shock as the voice told us we were the intended victims who were going to help decide who this season's winner was. They thanked us for our help and promised our bodies would be disposed of in a humane way.
Four doors opened in front of us and out walked a number of terrifying looking people. The speaker told us that we were welcoming four new killers who were vying for the title of this year's ultimate serial killer. We were introduced to them one by one with a quick synopsis.
First was the Nun who wore a nun's outfit which was splattered in blood. I would have considered her beautiful apart from the fact that her eyes were completely bloodshot. The only thing she held were rosary beads which looked very used.
Next was the Reaper who stood there in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He was wearing a mask that looked like it had once been the design of Robin Williams face. He held a shovel in his hands and kept spinning it around.
Then came the Boyscout who wore clothes that were 3 or four sizes too small for him. His scouting uniform looked like it had seen better days. He carried a branch that he was sharpening with a penknife and kept jabbing it towards us.
Finally he announced the Headmaster who stood there gazing at us with a look of pure disgust. He carried two metal rulers that were almost half the height of him. He reminded me so much of some of my old teachers that I involuntarily took a step backwards when his eyes rested on me.
One of the other victims went towards the Nun and begged her to help him as he had a wife and family. She smiled at him for a few seconds before wrapping the rosary beads around his throat and ripping his throat open.
A fountain of blood sprayed out of his throat and a small bit splattered onto my clothes. Pandemonium ensued as everyone around me began running off in every conceivable direction. The killers began moving forward and lashing out at anyone that got too close. I saw the old woman with the walking sticks get decapitated. The Reaper had knocked her to the ground and then used the shovel to cut off her head.
I stood there frozen in fear as I watched the killers slaughter numerous people. The Headmaster was using his rulers to slash into people's skin and then hitting against their throat to crush their larynx. The Boyscout was using his branch as a spear and I watched him shove it through someone's eye and out the other side of her skull.
I finally convinced my feet to start moving and began dodging between the corpses that littered the floor. I felt something brush by the hair at the back of my head and knew that one of them had come very close to catching me.
I found an unlocked door at the door at the other end of the building and yelled at the others. A few of the other victims must have heard me as they began rushing towards freedom. The killers were occupied in killing off any of the injured.
I rushed outside into bright sunshine and had to shield my eyes for a few moments. I eventually gazed around to see a small clearing with a forest in the distance. The other victims began running past me and began heading for cover in the forest. I reached the edge of the forest and gazed back to see the killers emerge from the building. I had a good headstart and knew that it would take them a while to catch up with me.
I began to jog slowly while taking the occasional break to conserve my stamina. It was about twenty minutes after entering the forest when I heard a noise coming from somewhere to my left. I looked in amazement as the four killers passed close by while riding a group of ponies. The Nun looked terrified and was clutching onto the poor animal's neck.
The Reaper spotted me and swerved his pony over towards me. He jumped off and began to swing his shovel all around him in an obvious attempt to intimidate me. I nearly burst out laughing when he somehow got the shovel stuck in a low hanging branch. I spotted a thick branch on the ground and smashed him over the head with it. He collapsed face first onto the ground and tried to get up. I started smashing the branch into the back of his skull until the branch eventually snapped. I reached up and grabbed his shovel and used it to finish the job of crushing in his skull. I noticed a camera in one of the trees and realised they were filming everything that was happening here.
His pony was grazing only a short distance away so I climbed on its back and began moving forward. I passed the corpses of some of the other victims who had obviously been caught by the killers. I spotted a building ahead and made my way towards it.
I stopped at the entrance to what was obviously once a school and hopped off the pony. He just wandered off straight away and began eating the grass that lay nearby. I held the shovel in my hands and took two deep breaths before making my way inside.
I was greeted by the bodies of more victims who looked like they had tried to put up a fight and lost badly. Their bodies were covered in multiple stab wounds and each of them had their eyes ripped out. I was still standing there gazing down at their bodies when I heard a noise directly behind me. I swung the shovel around in reflex in the hopes of taking out one of the victims. I froze in shock as I watched the shovel smash into a woman's skull. Her accusatory eyes stared at me before her corpse crumpled to the ground.
Someone began clapping and I saw the Headmaster step out of a room with a sinister smile on his face. He reached behind him and grabbed the rulers and began to advance on me. I held the shovel in front of me in the hopes of using it to block his blows. He swung one of the rulers and I felt a stinging sensation on my arm as the ruler connected. His smile grew wider as he had drawn first blood. He began to move quicker and I was constantly having to adjust myself to keep him at a distance. He rushed forward towards me and I dodged him. I stuck a foot out and watched in glee as he fell onto the ground. One of the rulers went flying out of his hand and he began reaching to grab it.
I brought the shovel down and listened to his scream of anguish as I cut off his hand. I celebrated internally as I rushed past him and grabbed the fallen ruler. He stood up and faced me with tears of pain cascading down his face. I now held the ruler in my hand and began moving towards him. He began to back away while swinging his other ruler to keep me at bay. He wasn't paying attention to what was behind him and tripped over the body of the woman I had accidentally killed earlier. He began pleading with me to stop but I felt no remorse as I brought the ruler down and crushed his throat. I searched through the room he had come from earlier and found some food and water. I had a quick meal and decided to have some sleep as it was starting to get dark outside.
The next morning I awoke and began gathering up what food and water that I had already eaten and prepared to head out. I decided on a whim to check the Headmaster's pockets and lucked out as I found a set of keys.
I went to the opposite entrance of the building and peered out to see nothing moving. I explored outside and found two quads hidden beneath some branches. I tried the key in both and was relieved when it worked in the first. I decided my only course of action was to keep going forward as there was only death in front of me. I made a harness using the branches to hold my supplies and the weapons I had collected.
For the next twenty minutes I moved along at a leisurely pace through fields of daffodils. I could see tracks crossing my path possibly made by the other victims and remaining killers.
I saw something on the ground ahead and slowed down to check it out. I quickly grabbed my weapons just in case it was a trap. I found a young girl who looked like she was no older than 12. She was luckily just asleep and I went over and got her some food and water. She woke up screaming after I tapped her on the shoulder. I quickly calmed her down after explaining that I wasn't one of them. She still looked weary but gladly accepted the food I offered.
I started heading towards the quad to get more food for her and had only moved a short distance away when I heard a noise behind me. I turned to see the Nun standing behind the girl with the rosary beads wrapped around her neck. The little girl gave me a pleading look moments before the nun slit her throat. The spray of blood turned all of the daffodils around us crimson. The Nun smiled at me and began inching towards me. I backed up towards the quad and grabbed the rulers.
The Nun stopped coming forward and gazed in annoyance at the rulers. She was obviously used to close quarter kills so I now had the advantage over her. She began circling me in the hopes of getting around my defenses. I watched her carefully and waited for her to make the first move. She darted forward so I whacked her hand with the ruler and she let out a squeal of pain. She looked furious at this point as there was a small bruise forming where I hit her. She continued circling me while occasionally darting forward before being forced back by the rulers.
I decided I needed to go on the offensive and lurched towards her. She seemed surprised at this and didn't even have time to defend herself as I smashed her across the face. She moved backwards and spit out some blood that contained a tooth. I began to attack her repeatedly and soon her face and hands were littered with cuts and bruises. She fell to the ground in the fetal position to try and protect herself. I grabbed the rosary beads that she had dropped and wrapped it around her throat. I think she was about to say something but I didn't give her a chance as I ended her life the same way she had ended the little girls. I threw the rosary beads on top of her corpse before spitting on her and making my way back to the quad.
I moved along at a quicker pace and began seeing more corpses who had makeshift arrows sticking out of their body. I decided it might be better to go on foot incase I wandered into an ambush. I dodged from tree to tree while constantly looking in every direction. The forest was deathly silent as if in anticipation of what was coming.
I was making my way across a small clearing when I felt an agonising pain in my right leg. I almost wept as I saw the arrow that now protruded from it. I tried to continue going forward but my leg gave out beneath me. I heard a manical laugh coming from the trees and the Boyscout moved out carrying a homemade bow. He threw it to one side and grabbed his penknife. He advanced forward to kill me while I was wounded. I started to crawl towards my supplies and had just put my hand on them when I was dragged away. I turned to see the Boyscout smiling down at me. I instinct lashed out with my uninjured foot and hit him in the testicles. The smile on his face disappeared as he crumpled to the ground. I reached down and snapped the arrow head that was in my leg and jammed it into his ear.
He began convulsing on the ground for a few seconds before finally going still. Music began playing and a number of heavily armed moved towards me. They were flanking someone who looked vaguely familiar. I think I had seen him in some straight to video movies over the years. He congratulated me on winning this year's tournament as I lay there in shock. He started asking me questions but I was too stunned to answer.
This happened a few months ago and I am still coming to terms with everything that transpired. I was given a million bucks in prize money and made to sign a number of legal documents to ensure my silence. I haven't been able to find this show but I know it is out there somewhere on the dark web. I just hope that if any of you take part then you will fight back like I did.

2023.05.30 09:57 CartoonistFluid5110 any advice on men and safety tips to protect myself that you would tell your daughter or sister?

So I wasn’t taught anything growing up about men or to protect myself from danger and so I grew up very naive. I know some common sense ones like not walking alone at night, carrying a pocket knife/pepper spray, dont solo travel, don’t go to their house on the first date, don’t get too drunk, listen to your intuition. I get so paranoid and anxious when I’m alone and around men and so is there a way to feel safe but still vigilant?

2023.05.30 09:52 RedTheMad Im the oracle, and this is my prophecy for the future

There will be new dark rifts in the new regions, gradually... which will drop first accuracy accessories and then deborekas, making them way more common.
There will be two new treasure items, One is about workers. (Endless food but it's going to be 400LT heavy, so we have to p2w the family storage anyway) One is about horses. (negate the horses taming minigame)
The storage transport system will be reworked and monetized. Will be used purely for the trading and bartering lifeskills.
The black spirit adventure will grant 5 daily dices instead of 3. Reworked rewards and much less crap.
We will get a daily quest that increase the chances of enhancing V fallen god gear plus 0.01% everyday. Making it kinda possible on a 3,65% after one year of dailys. There will be also a weekly that increase it 0.05% or something, this will add on the failstack we're dumping on it, kinda like valks cry but from daily.
The investiment bank nodes in the main towns will be reworked and useful. The investiment of silver will be much higher, 10x 1b silver ingots in the safe banking or 1b silver ingot in the risky one.
Bartering will be reworked, the daily parley will be 2.5 million (but with value pack) the ship loading capacity will be doubled for all ships as they did for wagons. Ship speed will stay the same. Price of bartering goods will be doubled.
There will be a processing byproduct, kinda like the witch delicacy. Will be possible to trade it for CP exp, or timbers/ores.
Harpoon fishing will be reworked. There will be some hotspots with only 1-2 prize catch fishes in total (like the Coelacanth spots near docks) You will be able to catch those very expensive fishes only with the harpoon.
There will be a monthly quest that rewards the player with a 3 or 7 days blessing of the old moon box (Value pack/kama blessing/old moon) all in one, the quest will probably be about a dungeon.
I see it, the accessory J hammer is coming. It's not behind the corner but i see it being given in approx a year.
The endless potions will be possible to placed in a special family inventory, dedicated only to treasure items and monetized. There will be the possibility to upgrade treasures, by grinding a copy of each. Two HP pots > for a better one, 2x maps, for 3h cooldown instead of 6, etc.

Im out of mana, this is all for now

2023.05.30 09:48 Dry-Resource6006 Prometheus and The Castle at the end of the world

I got this idea from "The Magicians", which in turn based that storyline on the myth of Prometheus. The lesser known parts of the myth specifically.
I think "From" is using parts of the myth as well, from both before and after Prometheus tricks Zeus a bunch, steals fire and is imprisoned.
There's too much context to explain it all in detail, but it's not hard to research it if you want to.
So, some similar things in From and the myth are:
The town might be Prometheus' prison. The people are somehow supposed to figure out how to free him, so maybe one of them is hercules, who frees prometheus. That maybe connects to why some people know each other but arrived at the town at separate times and circumstances, as it certain people are guided onto certain paths or else something is changing the circumstances until the right combination works.
In some rarer versions of the myth, the prison is meant to have been built by prometheus at the request of the gods, to contain the worst and most evil beings in creation. So it's really hard to find, which makes sense of both why people arrive totally unintentionally and it being like a pocket universe or wormhole.
Also, Zeus wants mankind to suffer. He tortures them all in intentionally confusing and distressing ways. So to not only snuff out their fire/hope, but make their existence afterwards would be much worse than it was before they had been given fire. He tricks Prometheus's brother Epimetheus, or Afterthought (cause he's so obsessed with the past he can't look ahead to tomorrow at all) into marrying Pandora. Who eventually opens the box and unleashes unimaginably evil things into the world where before there was none. I think the first massacre was the opening of the box and Victor could be a version of Epimetheus. Although I can't quite connect every part of this, because who would Pandora be? She opens the box, not Epimetheus, because she was basically created by zeus to introduce evil onto earth.
Zeus also turns the world into a sorta wasteland (with a flood, among other methods) at one point. And can craft monstrous beings out of clay which are intended to hunt down all of humanity now that they both live in the dark. Mankind initially hid from them underground and in caves. Just like before the talismans. Until prometheus taught them skills they could use to build safer domains. Arguably sorta like the talismans being found, maybe they were left there so they would be found?
Those Golems or ghouls would necessarily be "the tip of the spear", just like the monsters.
By the way, Prometheus delivers that famous fire by way of a reed he finds. He "carrying with him the precious spark hidden in the hollow center of the plant." Faraway Trees maybe? Although I know I might be taking a leap with this one.
I can't be sure if prometheus and whoever the antagonist is, are metaphors for the people's hope, instead of an actual character. That could explain why a lot of characters have visions or hallucinations which could be helpful or deceitful depending on the source.
Prometheus is chained to a mountain in the most popular telling of the myth, doomed with eternal life in suffering. So maybe Boyd took prometheus' burden unto himself in the cave with the dude who was somehow still alive in there until dying after passing it onto Boyd. Slightly darker than the idea of Prometheus willingly taking his punishment so he'd hopefully spare mankind, but hey it's a horror show.
I could just be connecting loose threads because of how stories this old necessarily influence all new stories we'll ever tell.
Or I cracked it and it's all just Ancient Greek poetry, but scary.

2023.05.30 09:44 JoshAsdvgi THE CLEVER NUMSKULL

THE CLEVER NUMSKULL

THE CLEVER NUMSKULL
(MICMAC: Rand, Legends of the Micmacs, )

Three brothers lived together.
They had no sisters, and their mother was sick.
The youngest was supposed to be a silly fellow, and was always doing outrageous things. One day they killed a pig.
The two older brothers went to fetch salt, and told the youngest one to remain and watch the house, and take care of their mother and the pig.
They said they were going to salt down the pork, and keep it for the long days.
After they were gone, he went out and found some men at work, and told them that if there was a man there named Longdays, he had a pig for him.
One of them declared that that was his name; forthwith the pig was delivered to him, and he carried it off.
By and by the other brothers arrived, and wondered what had become of the pig.
"Why, Longdays has been here and taken it away!
Did not you say it was to be kept for Mr. Longdays?"
"Oh, you blockhead! we told you it was to be kept for ourselves when the days become long next summer."
Some time after this, Coolnajoo was sent to buy a horse.
He made the purchase, and brought the horse home.
But there was a long avenue, lined by trees and bushes, extending from the highway down to the house; and when he came to the head of this lane, he gravely told the horse that this was the road, and bade him go on directly to the house.
Saying this, he removed the halter; and the horse kicked up his heels and made for home. The boy arrived home, wondering at the stupidity of the horse; and on relating the case to his brothers, they wondered at his stupidity.
"You numskull!" they exclaimed, "you can never do anything right.
Why did you not ride him down the lane?" "Oh, I will do better next time," he promised.
So, as the old mother got no better, they sent him to find and bring home a woman to assist in nursing her and in taking care of the house.
He took his bridle and started.
He succeeded in his expedition, and the woman came with him all quiet and kindly till they reached the head of the lane; but there and then he made an attempt to put the bridle on her head, and assured her that she had to carry him on her back, and walk on all fours down to the house.
Persisting in his determination, the terrified woman screamed, broke from her persecutor, and ran.
Chopfallen and sad, he went into the house.
What was his trouble? they asked him.
"Why! I attempted to bring her home in the way you directed; but she screamed and tore away from me, and crying went back, as hard as she could go.--
"Oh, you abominable fool!" they exclaimed; "was that the way to treat a woman?
You should have taken her by the arm, and occasionally given her a kiss." "Ah, well!" he cried, "I shall know better next time."
The next time he was sent for a pig.
He led the pig all right until he came to the lane.
He then tried to make the pig walk on his hind legs; and when the terrified animal squealed and kicked, he attempted to conciliate it by kissing it; but he received such a return from the tusks of his captive as made the blood flow, and caused him to let go his grip,--and poor piggy went off home at the top of his speed.
Poor Coolnajoo returned crestfallen to his home, to relate his adventures, and to be blamed and lectured for the hundredth time for his outrageous stupidity.
His next expedition was for a tub of hog's-lard.
This he purchased; but on his way home he passed over a portion of road that was dried and cracked by the sun.
"Oh, my old grandfather!" he exclaimed, "what a terribly sore back you have got,--so naked and dry!
You shall have my lard for salve, and 1 will rub it on."
So saying, he began spreading the lard over the dry road; and when it was all gone, he went home.
"Why have you not brought the lard?"
"Oh, dear me! I came across a poor old man lying in the road with his back all sore and cracked; and I pitied him, and spread the lard over him."
To this the brothers made no objection until they ascertained the truth of the case; when another attempt was made to teach him a lesson, and with the usual success.
His sixth expedition was in quest of a quantity of needles.
These were purchased, but on his way home he passed a newly reaped field of grain.
He looked at the stubble, and perceived the holes in the top; he was sure that when the rain should fall, the water would fill all those holes, and concluded that it would be a very benevolent act to stop them up.
This would be a capital end to which to apply his needles.
So he opened the packages, and carefully placed one in every straw; and when the supply was exhausted, many remained undoctored.
"Alas, poor things!" he cried, "I cannot help you any more, as my stock is out."
So he went home without his needles.
Afterward he was sent for some red flannel.
Passing a graveyard on his way home, he looked at the crosses, and took them for poor old penitents kneeling in the cold with outstretched arms, and carefully tore up his roll of red flannel and covered their poor shivering shoulders.
After this the two other brothers went together to town to make some purchases, and left him to take care of the sick mother.
They charged him to give her drink, and especially to wash her face.
He obeyed the directions, but supposed he must wash her face as he had seen her wash clothes,--by thrusting them into boiling water.
So he set on the great pot; and when the water was boiling, he took up the old woman and thrust her head into it, and held her there.
When he took her out, she was dead, and her lips were contracted to a grin, which he affected to mistake for laughter'. and placed her back in the bed, and leaped and laughed at her quiet and pleasant countenance.
He ran to meet his brothers, and told them that their mother had not been so quiet nor looked so well this long time.
She had not stirred nor spoken, and she was laughing all the time.
They went in, and were horror-stricken. "Oh, you outrageous simpleton! what have you done?
You have killed your mother.
We shall all be executed for murder."
But now Coolnajoo began to exhibit his shrewdness, and soon became as clever as he had hitherto been simple.
"Never you fear," said he; "we will turn the incident to good account, we will make some money out of it.
Wait you here; I will run for the priest."
So off he ran posthaste, and informed the priest that his mother was dying, and requested him to come with all haste, to perform over her the indispensable rite of extreme unction. The priest started immediately; but Coolnajoo outran him, and took his dead mother and placed her against the door, inside.
The priest reached the house, burst the door open, and tumbled the old woman over. Coolnajoo sprang to raise her.
Alas! she was dead. "Oh!" he exclaimed, wringing his hands and weeping, "you have killed our mother!"
All three gathered round, and the horrified priest did not know what to do.
They threatened to accuse him of the murder.
He finally succeeded in pacifying them, and gave them a whole handful of money to hush up the matter and say nothing about it.
The development of his shrewdness proceeded.
The two other brothers went away one day, and left the place in his charge.
Among other occupations he had to tend the pigs.
These he sold; but in order to cheat his brothers, he cut off their tails and took them down to a quagmire near the shore, and stuck them all up in the sand.
When they came back and inquired for the pigs, he told them they had broken out of the pen and rushed down toward the shore, and had sunk in the quagmire.
They went down to see; and sure enough, there they all were, just the tips of their tails sticking above the ground.
They seized hold of the tails, and tried to draw up the porkers; but the tails broke, and down into the mire sank the bodies, as they believed, and could not be found.
Soon his pranks became unbearable, and the brothers resolved to make away with him. They concluded to drown him.
So they tied him up in a bag, and took him down below high water mark and buried him,--not deep, however,--and left him to be drowned when the tide came in.
They returned; and he soon heard the "Uh! uh! uh!" of a drove of hogs, and called lustily for them to come to his aid.
If they would uncover and untie him, he would lead them to a place where they could feast on chickweed to their hearts' content.
The hogs, attracted by the noise, approached the spot.
Their noses were soon thrust deep into the soft earth.
The bag was soon reached, and instinct alone was sufficient to pull it out; and they soon removed the string,--when up jumped Coolnajoo, who seized one of his deliverers, transferred him to the bag, and the bag to the hole, drove the others away to the field of chickweed, where they were kept busy till the tide returned and covered the spot where he was supposed to lie.
In due time the tide receded, and compunction returned to the brothers' hearts; they repaired to the spot and dug up the bag, mournfully chanting, "Our poor brother is dead." Astonishment seized them when, on opening the bag, there, instead of the brother's corpse, was a dead pig.
Meanwhile Coolnajoo had waited at a distance from the spot until his brothers went down to the shore to look for him.
When they returned, he was astride the ridge-pole, laughing at them.
They made another attempt to kill him.
This time they planned better; they would take him to a waterfall and toss him in above, and let him be dashed to pieces in going over the rapids.
So they tied him up in a bag again, placed it across a pole, and started for the waterfall.
They became hungry on the way, and placed him by the side of the road, and went to get some dinner.
While they were gone, a drover came by; and seeing the bag, he went up and gave it a kick. "Halloa!" he exclaimed, "what is all this?"
Coolnajoo replied, and informed the drover that he and his brothers were on a money-hunting expedition; concealed in this bag, so as not to excite suspicion, he was to be taken to a certain place where they would all make their fortunes.
He gave such a glowing account of the matter, and with such apparent truthfulness and sincerity, that the drover was deceived, and offered him a whole drove of cattle and sheep for his chance in the money-hunting speculation.
The bargain was struck, and the parties exchanged places.
But Coolnajoo gave his substitute some cautions:
"You must be cautious not to speak, or the cheat will be discovered; my brothers must not mistrust that it is not I.
By and by you will hear the roar of a waterfall; do not be frightened.
Before lowering you to the place where you are to find the money, they may give you two or three swings.
You must keep still, and not speak; and after that you can have it all your own way."
So saying, he went on to the market with the drove.
The brothers came back to the bag. "Are you there?" they asked.
No answer.
But they saw that all was right, placed the bag on the pole, the pole on their shoulders, and moved on.
When they came to the waterfall, they approached as near as they could, and then gave him three swings in order to send him as far out as possible; and just as they let go, the terrified man sang out.
They were startled at the voice; it sounded like a stranger's voice.
They returned home, and shortly after their brother arrived with his pockets full of money,--the proceeds of his drove of cattle and sheep.
So they concluded to share the spoil and remain together.
But one night a band of robbers was seen advancing upon them, and they ran for their lives. Coolnajoo was the last to leave the house and the others told him to "bring the door to after him,"--meaning, of course, that he shall shut the door.
He obeyed to the letter,--took the door off the hinges, and carefully brought it after him. They made for the woods, and took shelter in a tree,--Coolnajoo dragging the door up after him, and holding it carefully all the while.
The robbers came up to the same tree, kindled a fire under it, cooked and ate their dinner, and then began counting and dividing their gold.
While this process was going on, Coolnajoo got tired of holding the door, and dropped it down among them.
It fell with a noise that terrified the robbers, who supposed that it had fallen from the sky; so they ran off as fast as their legs could carry them, and left everything behind,--gold, food, and dishes.
Down scrambled our heroes, and gathered all up and ran; finally they came to a house, where they remained all night.
They divided the money; but Coolnajoo claimed the largest share, as he declared that it was through his efforts that it had been obtained.
The next night they called and stayed all night at another strange house.
Coolnajoo became thirsty, and hunted around for a drink.
Feeling carelessly about, he thrust his two hands into a pitcher, and could not withdraw them.
He went out-of-doors, and looked around for something to strike the pitcher against, in order to break it.
At length he saw what seemed in the darkness to be a white rock.
He gave the pitcher a smart blow in order to free his hands; when, alas! he had struck a young woman in the head, and killed her with the blow.
At the sight of what he had done, he was terribly frightened, and called up his brothers.
He told them what had happened, and proposed immediate flight.
They all departed; and his brothers, fearing that Coolnajoo would ultimately get them into difficulties from which they would be unable to extricate themselves, separated from him. By mutual consent the partnership was dissolved.
They went each his own way.
Coolnajoo was bent on making money, and an opportunity occurred soon.
He kept his eye on the robbers, and saw them going out to bury a dead child; he watched to see where they deposited the body, and also followed them unseen to their retreat.
When night came, he took up the corpse they had buried, and went up to their house.
The window was open, and he looked in; they were busy counting and dividing their ill-gotten booty.
Piles of money covered the table, and he heard all the accounts of their expeditions.
All at once he sent the dead baby flying in among them,--which so frightened them that they took to their heels and left all behind.
He leaped in, gathered all the money, and left for home.
He now determined to settle, and to this end built a small house.
One day a heavy rain-storm came on; and just at nightfall two weary priests, wet to the skin, called and requested a night's lodging.
This he refused, as he had no accommodations for strangers.
They pleaded hard, and offered him a large reward; this he accepted, and kept them until morning, but managed to exact a still further contribution from them before their departure.

2023.05.30 09:42 JoshAsdvgi The Children with One Eye

The Children with One Eye

The Children with One Eye

Two little children, a boy and a girl, lived long ago with their widowed mother in the Canadian forest.
The woman was very poor, for her husband had long been dead and she had to work very hard to provide food for herself and her children.
Often she had to go far from home in search of fish and game, and at times she was absent for many days.
When she went on these long journeys she left her children behind her, and thus they were allowed to grow up with very little oversight or discipline or care.
They soon became very unruly because they were so often left by themselves and when their mother returned from her hunting trips, she frequently found that they would not obey her, and that they did pretty much as they pleased.
As they grew older they became more headstrong and disobedient, and their mother could do very little to control them.
And she said, “Some day they will suffer for their waywardness.”
One day the woman went to visit a neighbour not far away.
She left a large pot of bear-fat boiling on the fire.
And she said to the children, “Do not meddle with the pot while I am gone, for the fat may harm you if it catches fire.”
But she was not gone long when the boy said to the girl as they played around the pot, “Let us see if the fat will burn.”
So they took a burning stick of wood and dropped it into the fat, and stood looking into the large pot to see what would happen.
The fat sputtered for an instant; then there was a sudden flash, and a tongue of flame shot upwards from the pot into the faces of the children.
Their hair was burned to a crisp and their faces were scorched, and they ran from the house crying with pain.
But when they reached the outer air, they found that they could not see, for the fire had blinded their eyes.
So they stumbled around in darkness, crying loudly for help.
But no help came.
When their mother came home she tried every remedy she thought might restore their sight.
But all her medicine was unavailing, and she said, “You will always be blind.
That is the punishment for your disobedience.”
So the children lived in darkness for a long time.
But they were no longer headstrong and unruly, and although they could no longer see, they were less trouble to their mother than they were when they had their sight, for they did not now refuse to do her bidding.
One day, when their mother was far away hunting in the forest, an old woman came along and asked the children for food.
And they brought good food to her as she sat before the door.
After she had eaten, she said, “You are blind, but I can help you, for I am from the Land of the Little People.
I cannot give you four eyes, but I will give you one eye between you.
You can each use it at different times, and it will be better than no sight at all.
But handle it with great care and do not leave it lying on the ground.”
Then she gave them an eye which she took from her pocket, and disappeared.
So they used the one eye between them, and when the boy had the eye and the girl wished to see anything, she would say, “Give me the eye,” and her brother would carefully pass it to her.
When their mother came home she was very glad when she found that they had now some means of sight.
One day when their mother was away again, the boy went into the forest with his bow and arrows.
He carried the eye with him.
He had not gone far when he saw a fat young deer, which he killed.
The deer was too heavy for him to carry home alone.
So he said, “I will go and get my sister, and we shall cut it up and put it in a basket and carry it home together.”
He went home and told his sister of his good fortune, and he led her to where the deer lay, and they began to cut up the body.
But they had forgotten to bring a basket or a bag.
He called to his sister saying, “You must weave a basket into which we can put the meat to carry it home.”
And his sister said, “How can I make a basket when I cannot see?
If I am to weave a basket, I must have the eye.”
The boy brought the eye to her and she made a large basket from green twigs.
When she had finished making the basket the boy said, “I must finish cutting up the meat. Give me the eye.”
So she brought him the eye, and he proceeded to chop up the meat and to put it in the basket.
Then he said, “Why can we not have a meal here? I am very hungry.”
His sister agreed that this was a good idea, and he said, “You cook the meal while I pack the meat.”
The girl made a fire, but she was afraid she would burn the meat, so she said, “I cannot see to cook.
I must have the eye.”
By this time her brother had finished packing the meat into the basket, and he brought her the eye and she went on with her cooking.
The fire was low and she said, “I must have some dry wood.
Bring me some dry pine.”
The boy wandered off into the forest in search of wood, but he had not gone far when he stumbled over a log and fell to the ground.
He called to his sister in anger, saying, “You always want the eye for yourself.
How can I gather dry pine when I cannot see?
Give me the eye at once.”
His sister ran to him and helped him up and gave him the eye.
She found her way back to the fire, but as she reached it she smelled the meat burning on the spit.
She shouted, “The meat is burning and our dinner will be spoiled.
Give me the eye at once, so that I may see if the meat is cooked.”
The boy was some distance away, and in his anger he threw the eye to her, saying, “Find it.
I am not going to walk to you with it if you are too lazy to come and get it.”
The eye fell to the ground between them, and neither of them knew where it lay.
They groped for it among the dead leaves, but as they searched for it, a wood-pecker, watching from a branch of a tree near by, swooped suddenly down and gobbled it up and flew away.
As they were still searching for it, the old woman who had given it to them came along.
She had been hiding among the trees, and she had seen the wood-pecker flying away with her gift.
She said, “Where is the eye I gave you?”
“It dropped from my head,” answered the boy, “and I cannot find it in the grass.”
“Yes,” said the girl, “it dropped from his head, and we cannot find it.”
“You have lied to me,” said the old woman, “and you have disobeyed, and for that I shall punish you.”
And with her magic power she changed the boy into a mole and the girl into a bat, and said, “Now live blind upon the earth, with only your sense of sound to guide you.”
At once the boy and the girl were changed.
And so the Mole and the Bat appeared upon the earth.
