Ecclesiastes 10:1-3~"Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool."
"
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour"
I hate flies, but dead ones in certain places is even worse.
- Apothecary is one that prepares and sells drugs for medicinal purposes, the business now we call druggist, or pharmaceutical chemist.
- Here is a poetic, proverbial, and very powerful metaphor to emphasize protecting one's reputation, especially so one who is known for wisdom and being in a place of honour.
- We only wish we had been taught this great lesson while still in our youth. But, yet knowing this all important truth, it is not easy to let this slip and fall into some type of sin whereby we give place for other to speak evil of our name and the God that we serve.
"So doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour"~All it takes is a
little folly, just as flies are so small yet cause so much stink if in the apothecary's ointment! Though God forgives all sins, yet the damage is done, and cannot be reversed! It generally has lasting effect on so many people.
Proverbs 22:1~"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving kindness than silver or gold." Your reputation is an asset far more important than anything you can buy. The respect of others and their affection for you is an asset you should pursue with great zeal. Your character is a precious treasure that you should enhance each day by wise choices.
What do people think, when they hear your name? Do they think graciousness, godliness, diligence, and faithfulness? Is your name sweet to their ears and thoughts? How do they speak of you to others? Are you often praised in your absence? Do others crave your company? Do they want to honor you with affection, gifts, and service?
Or is your name a bitter thought? Do they think harshness, selfishness, stubbornness, pride, moodiness, or indiscretion? Do they try to avoid you? Do they avoid you? When others talk about you, do they have to make excuses for your conduct? Do they pass over you for invitations or assignments, because you are more irritating than pleasing?
You cannot ignore these questions and be wise. Your reputation and relationships are a great measure of your life. Stop and examine your reputation with others. What others think of you is a far more accurate picture of your life than what you think about yourself, for you have an obvious bias to distort facts in your favor, and you have a deceitful heart that is deeply infatuated with yourself (
Pr 16:2;
20:6;
21:2;
Jer 17:9;
Gal 6:3).
Some people are used as well known examples of specific virtues or all virtues. Others are used as examples of poor character and problems. How is your name used? Are you spoken about affectionately and respectfully, or critically and negatively? Many have no outstanding virtues at all, so they pass through life without any honor or favor, which shows a lack of diligence and priority in pursuing godliness and virtue.
What is a good name? It is not your parents’ choice of a distinguished combination of syllables that sounds sophisticated, classy, or pleasant. It is not merely being named after a respected ancestor. Your bare name has no value at all. Solomon used “good name” as a metonym for a good reputation. He exhorted his son to emphasize having a good reputation with God and good men as one of the chief goals of life (
Pr 3:4).
What is loving favour here? It is not giving love and favour to others, but rather receiving love and favour from others. It is obtaining affection and respect from other virtuous persons. It is obtaining their acceptance and approval of your life. Of course, reaching such a position requires you to carefully rule your conduct to please others. It requires consistent righteous behavior to hold the esteem and trust of others (
Eccl 10:1).
The proverb has an ellipsis, which is missing words that shorten the sentence and give it boldness. The second clause may be read, “And loving favour is to be chosen rather than silver and gold.” These words taken from the first clause are important to fill out the whole sense of the proverb. A comparison and choice is being taught in both clauses.
In each case it is your choice. You can choose a good reputation and the loving approval of others. It is your choice. Both should be a priority. Both are more important than other measures of success. Circumstances or discrimination are excuses for foolish or lazy men who have not properly pursued these important goals. A wise man will pursue both.
What is the lesson? You should put great emphasis on your reputation and relationships. While many men chase financial and professional success with all their might, Solomon exhorted his son to value his reputation and relationships higher than these other goals. He wanted his son to grow in favor with God and men, and he ranked the importance of this achievement as more valuable than great riches (
Pr 3:4;
I Sam 2:26;
Luke 2:52).
How do you measure by Solomon’s lesson? How important is your reputation to you? Is it more important than any amount of money or success? Do you work harder to improve your name than to get ahead financially? How much do you value the esteem and respect of good men? Do you regularly examine your conduct to be without offence? Do you go out of your way to make sure each thing you do is done very well for all concerned?
God measures you by what others think. You cannot please God and offend good men at the same time. It is impossible. If you are pleasing God and keeping His commandments, you will please others (
I Sam 18:14-16;
I John 5:2). And your family and close friends do not count, for it is your reputation before good men that is the key. You can easily tell a person’s character by the number and kind of friends he has. These facts do not lie.
Of course, others’ opinions are not your only measure, or the most important (
John 5:44). But they are a measure. You foolishly deceive yourself to approve your life and conduct, if good men and women have a low regard of you. Joseph and Daniel were highly regarded even as captives in foreign lands by their excellent spirits and blameless lives.
Demetrius had a great name and reputation of the apostles and all men (
III John 1:12); Timothy was highly regarded both before and after he met Paul (
Acts 16:1-2;
Phil 2:19-22). This high measure of a good reputation in the world is a necessary qualification for the bishops of Jesus Christ’s churches (
I Tim 3:7). How do you measure up?
A good reputation before the world is possible, but some ungodly men will not appreciate your righteousness (
I Thess 4:12;
I Pet 2:12;
Dan 6:3-5;
Luke 6:26). Solomon primarily intended good and wise men, who know the heart and will of God and measure other men by godliness. Compromise or friendship with the world is a trait of sinners (
Jas 4:4).
Your opinion of yourself is quite worthless. It is usually contrary to fact. People with good reputations generally think poorly of themselves, which keeps them humble and sensitive to others; but those with bad reputations think themselves quite desirable, leading to offensive arrogance. The difference between humble modesty and self-righteousness is a large part of a good name, which is built on low self-esteem.
Your great goal is to grow in “loving favour” with God and men, as did Samuel and the Lord Jesus Christ (3:4;
I Sam 2:26;
Luke 2:52). This happens when you keep the two great commandments – love of God and love of neighbor. The “loving favour” of the proverb is how God and others treat you, which you can choose by living a consistent life of godliness and love toward them. An excellent spirit will cause others to love you.
So great are these goals – your reputation and esteem by others – they should exceed any other goal. Men work long days of hard labor for many years to get rich, but building a good name and reputation are more important. If you had a choice between a good reputation and precious ointment, which was of great value in Israel’s very dry climate and provided much personal pleasure, you should choose the good name (
Eccl 7:1).
Consider your funeral (
Pr 10:7). The memory of just men is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall rot. How will you be remembered? How long will you be remembered? Will your memory bring pleasant thoughts to hearts? Or will most cringe and be relieved? The number of persons, and their character, and their reaction at a funeral say a great deal.
You have two names. Your first name is your personal name, a unique identifier among the billions on earth. How you live and treat others creates the reputation of your first name. God gave you that name at birth with a blank reputation. What have you done with it since? You have either enhanced it or damaged it. With a single word, your name, reactions and thoughts are triggered in others. What are those thoughts?
Your second name is your surname or family name. How your family lives and treats others creates its reputation. Do you promote your family name? Or are you letting it decay? Do others desire to be with your family? Or have they been offended enough to back away? Do others want to marry into your family to obtain an interest in a good name? A good surname takes consistent godliness from many different persons.
David had a great name in the Bible. His name was much set by in Israel (
I Sam 16:18;
18:30). Though Saul was king with a princely son, Jonathan and the nation loved David, for he was better than any other (
I Sam 18:1-16). Everyone wanted to be with David, be like David, or be married to David. He earned this by being gracious, humble, and wise at all times. God chose this man, though a sinner, as an example of a great name in Israel.
Blessings at Solomon’s coronation included having a name greater than his father David’s name, which was easily the greatest in Israel (
I Kings 1:47). Even God compared all later kings to David, and he was described as a man after God’s own heart. What a goal! How do you measure up, reader? Good fathers will want their sons to exceed them in reputation and loving favour, for they will know the many mistakes they have made.
Nabal was the opposite. He was churlish – overbearing, harsh, and difficult (
I Sam 25:2). His name meant fool, and even his wife said he was a fool (
I Sam 25:25). He was a man of Belial – wicked and profane. The Lord let him think about dying for ten days before killing him, so David could marry his beautiful wife right after his funeral (
I Sam 25:39).
Consider Joseph. Though a slave, he earned the loving favour of God and Potiphar by his exemplary conduct (
Gen 39:1-6). Though charged with attempted rape, he earned the loving favour of God and the jailor (
Gen 39:19-23). Though a long-term prisoner, he earned the loving favour of God and Pharaoh (
Gen 41:38-45;
Acts 7:10). Anyone who says their circumstances or past have poorly affected their name is just making excuses.
Consider Daniel. Though a captive eunuch from a strange, small country, he earned the loving favour of God and Ashpenaz, the prince of the eunuchs in Babylon (
Dan 1:9). Though living a public life for many decades, his enemies could not find a single error or fault by which to accuse him to the king (
Dan 6:1-5). What a role model for young men!
What can you do to build your name and reputation and win the loving favour of others?
Everything you do every day contributes toward your reputation and the favour of others. No matter how small or large, the accumulated effect of your words and actions combine to give God and men an appraisal of your character and faithfulness. Therefore, it is your solemn duty and privilege to keep your heart, lips, and feet with all prudent diligence.
Graciousness is the greatest trait for a good name and the loving favour of others, for it can win the friendship of kings and cause women to be always honored (
Pr 22:11;
11:16). It is the perfect combination of gentleness, kindness, humility, and cheerfulness that makes men and women charming and delightful. How gracious are you?
Men love those who help build their lives (
Pr 27:9,
17;
Ps 141:3). Are you a tree of life to others (
Pr 11:30;
15:4)? Do they benefit by being around you (
Pr 9:8;
25:12;
28:23)? Do they seek you for help? Would you help fellow prisoners like Joseph did? Or your captors like Daniel did? Or a lustful king like Esther did? Or many widows like Dorcas did?
Is your speech a healing balm, a sarcastic whip, or a foolish noise? Men love pleasant and good words that are kind, gentle, friendly, and helpful (
Pr 12:18;
16:24;
18:21;
25:11). Is your speech always gracious with only a slight saltiness of rebuke to it (
Col 4:6)?
Charity never fails! If you learn and apply the fifteen phrases describing true love (
I Cor 13:4-7), your name will blossom as a beautiful flower. If your name is not great and your friends are few, it is evidence you have not learned true love. Charity never fails!
Just a little folly can spoil a reputation quickly (
Eccl 10:1), so you must avoid even the appearance of evil (
I Thess 5:22). And you must quickly make amends for offences (
Matt 5:23-24). Ruling your spirit constantly is necessary to stay virtuous (
Pr 16:32). Paul took extra measures to make sure he could never be accused of dishonesty (
II Cor 8:21).
Warren Buffet, one of the world’s richest men and well received most anywhere, knows the wisdom of this proverb. He teaches others, “It takes twenty years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you will do things differently.”
John D. Rockefeller, one of the wealthiest men in human history, said, “The most important thing for a young man is to establish a credit – a reputation, character.” He also said, “Next to doing the right thing, the most important thing is to let people know you are doing the right thing.” This latter idea agrees well with Paul (
Ro 12:17;
II Cor 8:21).
If you are young, you have an advantage. Your reputation is still being formed, and you should apply yourself with all diligence to make it the very best before God and men. If you are young, you have not made as many mistakes as older persons, meaning you have less to live down. Choose today to make this proverb a high goal and live according to it.
Have you blown your reputation already? Do you think it is too late? It is never too late, if you will repent before God, confess your sins to him, confess your faults to others, and make amends or restitution for any wrongs you have done. David recovered his reputation after terrible sins, and so did Zacchaeus and Peter (
Luke 19:1-9;
Gal 2:9).
Your name and reputation are daily choices, and you should choose to build them and preserve them more than any other project or goal. You can change your name and reputation, so consider it a blessed privilege, duty, and a high priority for your life. Rather than emphasizing exercise, diet, and sleep to build your body, which has little value to God or men, exercise yourself unto godliness and loving others (
I Tim 4:7).
Husband, do you love your wife enough to help build her name and loving favour with others? Parent, do you understand the importance of this proverb as a goal for your children? Diligent efforts should be made every day to make sure your family name and that of each family member is clear of offence. What a wonderful family objective!
If you have taken the name of Jesus Christ as a Christian, it is important that your name and reputation give honor to your religion and its Leader (
II Tim 2:19). Be like those of Pentecost, who grew in favor with all the people (
Acts 2:47;
Phil 2:14-16). Let your life adorn the doctrine of God with glory and beauty (
Titus 2:5,
8,
10). Be like those nameless brethren endorsed by Paul as “the glory of Christ” (
II Cor 8:23).
Jesus of Nazareth grew in favour with God and men during his youth (
Luke 2:52). He was most gracious in conduct and speech (
Ps 45:2;
Luke 4:22). Because He loved righteousness and hated wickedness, God’s loving favour blessed Him with the oil of gladness above His fellows (
Heb 1:9). His name is above every name by many measures. Choose to have a perfect name, even as His name is perfect in heaven and in earth. ( J. R. Crosby a friend of mine )

2023.05.30 19:07 LonnieJay1 Storytime: back to burglary
“So, what, I'm just supposed to sit in my car by the train tracks until you call?” I ask, as my car rolls to a stop. I regret the words as soon as they come out of my mouth.
“I thought you said this kid was smart?” Connor asks Johnny, from the back seat.
“I thought he was, too. Yes, obviously. Wait here – and cut the headlights, goddammit,” Johnny says, looking at me from the front seat of my Monte Carlo and shaking his head. He looks furious. He is sweaty, despite Old Man Winter starting to get his grip on Maryland. I look away from him and cut the headlights off.
The freezing rain that is coming down is a perfect match for Johnny’s mood and our plan tonight. Johnny is dopesick. Besides the sweat on his face, his visible irritation, and his obvious anxiety, his wide eyes and pupils are a dead giveaway to a fellow junkie. He no longer looks like the healthy and decent-looking kid that I saw when he got out of jail.
He looks absolutely skeletal, his cheeks sunken in from his heroin habit. He has bags under his eyes, and they somehow look equally terrible during both the over-stimulation of withdrawal and the extreme sedation of a dose of heroin. He is sick now, but he was incredibly high last night. So was I.
I still am. Despite how high on heroin I am, I am not high enough to think that I look better. I would never want anybody that I know to see me right now. I don’t even want to see myself.
Johnny gets out of the car. Connor, a blonde haired, blue-eyed, Irish-looking kid, follows suit. I push the ‘trunk’ button to open the trunk and hear it pop open. I cringe at how loud the sound is. I watch my side view mirror.
I see Johnny and Connor pull two shirts out of the trunk and wrap them around their faces, while they are illuminated by the surreal red color of my brake lights. I have extra shirts that I keep in the trunk in case I soak mine through with sweat while playing ball, and now they are being used in a robbery.
I can see the gravel road that is underneath us stretching out behind us. The gravel road is surrounded by huge, old trees. We are deep in the sticks. About a half mile back are the train tracks where I will wait. Connor and Johnny move out, towards a very small and well concealed driveway.
I start to pull off, slowly, not turning on my headlights yet, even though I can’t see anything at all. I listen to the gravel crunching underneath my car, my entire body clenched as I drive, hoping that I don’t hit a tree. These properties are huge. I couldn’t even see most of the houses from the road, even when it was daylight outside. These are double digit-acre properties.
Johnny is probably right. This is going to be one hell of a come-up. I manage to drive only a little further down the road before I turn my headlights back on, too scared to keep driving into the pitch-black dead of night. I go half a mile and then turn around in somebodies’ driveway, careful to back in, conscious of where I shine my headlights.
Ok, now back to the train tracks until Johnny calls. My heart starts to beat faster.
How did this happen? I was clean. I was so happy. I thought I wasn’t an alcoholic. I drank, and drank again, and drank again. It doesn’t matter if it was just on the weekends for a while. I should’ve known I was going to smoke, too, eventually. I started to smoke, I stopped playing ball, and I started hanging out with Johnny all the time.
Alcohol gave me a hangover. Weed took it away. I became a stoner again, and adderall helped me get through the lazy fog of the weed burnout and force myself to play ball again – until it made me too anxious. The anxiety led me back to oxy. It was only supposed to be one time; one 30mg pill.
Now, I’m doing heroin again.
Of course. With heroin comes robbery. The cycle is complete – well, it will be once I get arrested again, and I definitely will.
I park at the train tracks and turn my car off. The car that I paid off with money that I worked for while I was clean and happy.
Didn’t matter. Never does. Nothing matters, Lonnie.
Not the ‘nothing matters’ thought loop. Please. Anything but this.
I reach into the inside of my left sock and pull the last of my heroin out. The 3 of us bought some last night. They have no self-control or hustle, which is why they are broke and dopesick right now.
I pour some of it onto the ‘Illmatic’ CD case I keep in my car. I use the same CD case to sniff my drugs, every time.
The heroin is a chunky tan powder. It is Baltimore’s ‘raw’ heroin. It’s good, but I know I can find better. I am generous in my self-prescription. After all, robbery anxiety can’t be good for my health. I sniff the dope slowly, hoping to ease the burn that always ensues upon insufflation. It doesn’t burn too bad this time.
I put everything away and recline the driver’s seat. That ought to do the trick. I lean back as far as I can, and then tilt my head back. I sit and wait for the God of dreams, Morpheus, to say hello. The warmth, the muscle relaxation, the dreamy euphoria. The itch, even.
I can’t wait. I hate waiting.
I wait. A minute, then two. Then, I start to feel an extremely pleasant tingle in the back of my neck. All of my limbs become comfortable and warm.
Ah, there it is. Like the tickle of an angel. My whole body relaxes with pleasure. Parts of my body that I didn’t even know I could relax wind up relaxing. All of my needs are satisfied. I have not one worry in the world.
Why am I trying to keep my eyes open? They don’t even need to be open.
A loud, frantic, continuous series of knocks startles me awake. I can hear Johnny's voice before my eyes adjust to my environment.
"-the fucking door"
I semi-spring into action, fumbling for the handle only to find the door locked. I see Johnny running around the hood of my car, over to the passenger side. I hear Connor hitting his fist loudly, aggressively, and repeatedly against the trunk of the car. I unlock the doors, pop the trunk, and then glance in the mirror just in time to see Connor put something in my trunk.
The passenger door opens a millisecond after it is unlocked. It remains open for a few seconds. The trunk slams, and Connor appears, diving smoothly into the back seat.
“Go-go-go,” Johnny says, as he locks the passenger seat back into place, sits down, and slams the door in one motion. He almost closes it on his own leg. The interior of the car plunges into darkness as I start it, put it in drive, and pull off as quickly as I can. I can maintain silence for less than a second of driving.
“What did we get?” I ask. My nose itches. I itch it.
“We?” Connor asks from the back seat.
“Yeah, WE,” I say, unable to keep anger from edging into my voice. “The only reason I didn't come in with you guys is cuz you told me not to,” I add.
“Yeah, because you don't need the money,” Johnny says. I glance over at him. Even through the darkness, I can tell he is sweating even more than before, though he no longer seems angry. They must have made out good, for Johnny to suddenly be able to control his rage and tolerate his sickness like this.
“Bullshit. I need the money,” I say, looking back to the gravel road in front of us. I have to take us back to Johnny’s grandmas’ place. It is at least a 30-minute drive.
“You aren't even sick, Lambo,” Johnny says, softly, like a parent trying to calm their kid down.
“What did you come up on in there?” I ask. I have to know.
“Don't worry about it. You'll get your weed,” Connor interjects quickly. I say nothing. I look back over at Johnny. He's staring at the road. I keep staring at him, waiting for him to look back at me, but he never does.
“Fuck you, Connor,” I say. He chuckles, the way he might at a kid.
45 minutes later.
Johnny gave me extra hashish to assuage his guilt. I know they found a LOT of money in that house. Johnny knew it was loaded. He knew there were pounds of hash, pounds of weed, and fat stacks of cash. That's why we hit it. Fuck them for not even letting me see the inside of the cooler.
My mind takes me back to something Connor said, yet again.
“That's all you get. Unless you're a dope boy in disguise,” he sneered at me, before giving me only half of the ounce of hashish that he was supposed to give me. Dope fiends are the lowest of the low, but dope boys...
I'm off probation. I can make a run at selling heroin. I have thousands of dollars saved from being clean and working my ass off. In our city, heroin sells for quadruple what it does in Baltimore. Go to Baltimore, buy heroin, bring it back here, sell it, quadruple my money. Easy.
I drive and scheme as to how I am going to do it. No way that motherfucker Connor will be involved. I get back to my parents’ house, sniff more dope, and lay in bed. As the dope hits me, it becomes easier and easier to see myself as a heroin kingpin. I have much greater resources now than in my old oxy dealing days. I could really pull it off – especially with Johnny’s help. I can see myself in that Benz I wanted so badly in high school.
I float and drift further into my fantasy, and my waking dream becomes a dreamless nothing.

2023.05.30 18:52 oshiesmom Is this crazy or am I?
Our son is getting married in a few weeks. I’ll preface this by saying I LOVE my new daughter in law. We are pretty simple people, live on a farm in Michigan and have a modest income. Our kids are all adults and have great jobs. They are super self sufficient and can do just about anything such as car repairs, house repairs/makeovers, cooking, baking, etc. Our daughter in law comes from a swanky town closer to the city. Her parents live in a 1.5 million dollar condo, they just think about money differently. There is a lot of posturing and just assuming that money grows on trees for everyone. The kids, (both 30) wanted a small friends and immediate family wedding- 50 people max. Her folks said they HAVE to have a “real” wedding and they would pay….. not so true as we get closer. We are hosting the rehearsal dinner for 40 people (?) and the wedding is 150 people, a full weekend at a destination wedding place in northern Michigan which involves an air bnb, planning food and drink for the entire weekend, etc. her parents are now starting to freak out regarding the cost.. We are of course paying for our air bnb (700), the dinner ($1000) plus about another $1000 in other expenses. Our two adult daughters were invited to a bachelorette “weekend”.. They just received their bill for the weekend of $210 each. The party started at DIL sisters house with activities, brunch at her parents the following day, an evening out Saturday night, brunch again on Sunday, again at a friends this time. My thoughts are if you want to plan a three day event that is so elaborate with different activities (they had a psychic Friday night) a party bus, tie dye custom shirts, etc. shouldn’t the host foot the bill? I would never host an event that was so costly then expect people to just pony up the cash (btw, sister has plenty of $$$ which is why this isn’t a big deal for her). Her parents keep insisting we get the rehearsal dinner catered instead of having a big Greek cookout. Mind you, we have entertained 200+ in the past with ease so 40 is a walk in the park. It’s not that our menu is cheap either. Beef kabobs, chicken kababs, grilled veggies, homemade pita, tdzicki, Greek salad, rice with red sauce and baklava. I make this 4-5 times a year with beef tenderloin. Every time we discuss the wedding it gets mentioned again. I don’t have $4k that I’m willing to spend to cater this dinner…. Ugh. Am I being cheap or are they just out of touch with the reality for most people? Btw- it’s not that we CAN’T afford it, I just see it as a ridiculous waste of money.

2023.05.30 18:43 HatakeIchizokuFujin [CA] Highly poisonous trees planted along popular walking path in neighborhood
I am a caretaker of five disabled or senior animals (3 cats, two dogs). While on our morning walk, our leashed kitty nibbled on a piece of flower that fell off a tree. Immediate chaos ensues and we rush her to ER. I also handled parts of the tree and became ill with acute diarrhea and vomiting.
After a stressful day of consulting with Posion Control and bringing in Botantists to verify identity, the conclusion is that the trees (over a hundred planted along the walking path and near a children’s playground in my subdivision) are Nerium Oleander, an insanely poisonous tree. I am an Ecologist and along with the Bontanists, we pulled multiple studies and cases of children and wildlife being killed by touching and/or ingesting any part of this tree.
We are currently thousands of dollars into vet bills as the emergency room is trying to save my cat. I reached out to the HOA with all of the info I had gathered, explaining everything here and asked them to follow-up. I received an email that they would look into it.
My LA question is
a) Is it illegal to plant a highly dangerous shrub/tree in this manner
b) Is the HOA responsible for damages
c) Doctor told me I should be able to file the vet bills with my renters insurance; is this an accurate statement?
d) Do I have avenues of recourse to make sure someone else’s pet or child isn’t killed by this tree

2023.05.30 18:36 flatline000 Are 2mm lead holders getting more popular?
I've started seeing 2mm lead holders with colored leads in mainstream stores like Target, Walmart, Dollar Tree, etc. And it seems like new members posting their collections are more likely to include 2mm lead holders than a couple of years ago.
Is the general public becoming more aware of 2mm lead holders?
This would be great, if true.

2023.05.30 17:16 investing101 Dollar Tree Falls As Theft Cuts Into Bottom Line
2023.05.30 17:14 Organic_Barnacle2512 Do I need to put anything under kegs for support.
| Hello my mom got this pool for her house. Over the weekend I built a frame for the sand base using treated limber and compatible hardware to avoid corrosion. We've got the frame level and ready to add in sand and tamp it down with manual tamp tool. Frame is secured with rebar going through every couple feet of frame about 1ft inside the ground, inside the frame is white driveway gravel, on top of that is landscaping fabric to stop the sand from going through gravel as it dries. We will be tamping the sand down to completely level and having a depth of at least 3 inches on top of the fabric. Over that we will lay down a tarp so the sand doesn't get tracked into pool. My question is, will we need to place anything under each leg to stop them from sinking down and losing its support? I've seen some other posts where people reccomendations dollar tree cutting boards or papers. Just want to do it right and best the first try so we don't do work for nothing. We do not have the option of changing the base material or building anything new. submitted by Organic_Barnacle2512 to AboveGroundPools [link] [comments] |
2023.05.30 16:13 fuzziekittens A set of poems that have helped with my grief.
Growing up so disconnected from my emotions, I frequently need pieces of media to help me through my grief. I love spoken word poetry and I wanted to share two poems by Andrea Gibson. While they are both called The Call, they are very different from each other and I have related to both in different stages of my healing. I hope they help you.
THE CALL, OPTION 1
I pay seventeen dollars online to track down the phone number
of the man who sexually assaulted me, and my friend asks, "What
do you plan to say?"
I'll tell him I know he lost
all his money gambling
and was forced
to sell the building
where he did what he did.
I'll tell him karma is a hell
of a feminist.
I'll tell him my silence
was his worst bet.
I'll tell him I'm watching
him through the bullet hole
he left in my childhood,
and if he comes within
two hundred miles
of a child's trust, my body
will start bleeding his name
all over Main Street in his middle-
of-somewhere town.
I'll tell him
he's the middle of nowhere:
a man with no stop
lights, the kind of place kids grow up
desperate to escape. I'll tell him
as soon as I got out,
I imagined him sanding off
his fingerprints, the guilt
filing him down to half his size.
When I met him,
he was the biggest man
in town, had set records
in the deadlift, was as old
as my father. I weighed
ninety-six pounds, was still
spending sleepovers practicing
how to kiss. I'll tell him how big
I am now. So big
I could make his address
the title of my next book,
and yes, I think he asked for it.
Asked me to play hangman
with his name on the local news,
asked me to spray paint ME TOO
across his pickup truck
and say, I dare you
to compare property damage
with someone you made property.
With someone whose puberty
you mutilated.
I'll say, Trauma
is a pretty word for how to die
every day of the year,
but my voice is alive
and right now it is the only justice
system I trust
to ensure men like you
understand the law
of gravity, understand
you will always be held down
by what you held down.
There is no such thing as rising
from someone else's ashes.
No man's spirit escapes the hell
he denies putting a child through,
which is to say, I am the only one
out of the two of us who survived
you, and I survived you
so beautifully. Even on my worst days,
my scars are the backroads
where kids sneak out their windows
and drive through the night
to hear poetry. I am so much
of who I dreamed I'd be
when I grew up, and what
does the boy you once were
think of the man you became?
A man running
from his own name.
A man who must wake
fifty times a night, terrified
the truth is somewhere breaking
from its chains and racing
for the world's ear.
When the truth gets there, will you try
to tell your friends I wanted it?
Will you try to tell your wife
how old of a soul I was?
At thirteen? At thirteen,
I had the youngest soul
in the universe.
I was so brand new
I thought reincarnation
was a flower I would wear
on my wrist
if someday someone asked me
to the ninth-grade dance.
I'd stand in my full-length mirror
and practice not blushing
when a slow song came on.
That's how old I was.
That's the kind of man you were.
The kind of man who makes children
grow up and search
for your phone number,
our bodies riddled with the wish
that all the records will say:
No one by that name exists.
THE CALL, OPTION 2
I pay seventeen dollars online to track down the phone number of the man who sexually
assaulted me, and my friend asks, "What do you plan to say?"
There is a world in which you did not touch me.
A world in which you thought about touching me
and were so nightmared by your own mind
you climbed inside your skull and bloodied your knees
crawling across the tundra of your history,
turning over every rock to chase out every worm
that might trick you into believing anything
could be cut in half and keep living.
There is a world in which you saw
how easily you could become an ax
splitting the personalities of children,
so swore your fingerprints
would be like the rings of trees, that your growth
could be counted on. In this world you have
groomed no one, and I am made of flyaways-
gleefully unclipped, wholly uncombed through,
braiding myself around a song, certain
I've invented dancing. Look at me
still calling you a hero. You built my trust
and never became the quake of earth
that shattered my foundation. Look at you
mothering your own nature, calling yourself home
at the first sign of dark. In this world you might
still be poor but not where it counts.
You might have still lost all your money,
but look at what you saved: Me
and Her and Her and Her and Her and Her
and the child you once were-how proud
he is to see who he's become. In this world
you still have secrets, but they are like my father's
secrets. The ones he doesn't know I know.
The ones my grandma told me: how he stayed
home nearly every weekend of high school
to keep my grandfather's drunken fist from the glass
of her jaw, how good my father was at pretending
he didn't love the movies, hadn't saved
all summer to buy a secondhand suit
for his first school dance. There is a world
in which you, too, only lie to save someone's life,
a world where you still live a stone's throw
from Canada but walk the river's shore never plotting
how you'd swim to freedom, never practicing
the backstroke of denial, never hoping I drowned
the letters you wrote me when I was graduating
eighth grade and you were forty and marrying
someone you said would never be your type.
The first time I called, your wife answered
the phone. I hung up, not strong enough
to be like you to throw a brick through
a woman's chest and have no doubts about it
being the right move, but there is a world
in which the truth is as soft as the pillow
that holds your wife's head when she dreams
about the day you met. In this world you wake up
before she does, make her coffee, read her horoscope
and forget to read your own. Where you stand behind her
when she looks in the mirror, tell her she's grown
more gorgeous every one of her sixty-seven years,
how you feel like the richest man in town
with your hands in the silver
of her hair. In this world I celebrate the news
of you having a daughter, a granddaughter, a niece.
In this world I don't panic when I see a pink tricycle
in your neighbor's driveway
as I'm driving to meet friends at the riverfront,
my hometown still a home you never haunted.
I roll the window down, holler your name
into the autumn air. You look up
from raking a pile of golden leaves, smile
and wave back to me. Can you see it?
I know you can. Everyone can
see who they were supposed to be.
It's the readiest grief in the world.

2023.05.30 16:13 Jaded-Pin4990 Chicken
Y’all I went to get some chicken to marinade for jerk chicken. (I’m making Mac and cheese and cabbage and yams with it) and I looked at the chicken legs and almost changed my mind to steak lol. But I got thighs and wings.
Easy jerk chicken Recipe just because:
Walker woods jerk seasoning (spicy or mild I use mild cause my husband is a punk)
Lime juice
Bbq sauce. That’s all add each too your liking if you want more kick add the jerk seasoning if you want more lime and acid add more lime and if you want to balance out the spicy add more bbq sauce! It doesn’t matter what sauce it can be dollar tree brand lol just make sure you don’t put the chicken in the crock pot for 12 hours

2023.05.30 15:25 gracelyy Am I wrong for expecting repayment after she used my items?
Yea this is objectively a stupid situation, it's small and unimportant. But I wanna make sure I'm not high or blind here, so I will be asking the masses. This will have some background so you see my side of this.
I live in a household with 4 women, including myself. I work full time, and I'm the youngest at 19. Living with family, since someone thought we were roommates.
I'm working towards a goal. Have a car + move out by the end of the year. I get paid, but 80% goes to saving or paying off credit card bills, so I don't have a lot leftover. It's a sacrifice I'm making, but it's needed. I don't like a lot of lotion, but from TikTok I found one I really really liked. Like I actually found my signature lotion, which is amazing. Everytime I buy something I go home and let everyone know if they can or can't use it. I specifically said with this lotion, please don't use it, it's mine, bought with my own money, not community property. For me it's expensive (8 bucks) because usually I go for dollar tree or discount stuff. So I said, nobody touch it. I don't even use it often, so I'll know when it is used.
I come home one day and I hold my lotion to put some on my hands and then I notice I hear a lot of air in it. I squeeze it and notice that I dang sure didn't used that much lotion, so I investigate. I found out my grandma used my lotion, a lot of it, continuously. Her mostly, also my aunt, but it's 90% my grandma. Also my grandma isn't old nor senile. We already don't have a good relationship, and nobody here beat teen pregnancy except me.
I'm mad but I kindly tell her to not use it again. I work hard for my stuff, barely have money left to myself, and would like to enjoy the things I can afford. She says ok.
Fast forward I notice more is gone and ask her did she use it again after I specifically said to not use it. She said she did.
I then said that she has to buy me another lotion bottle, because again, she's continuously using mine despite me asking her nicely to stop. This one isn't gone yet, but I bought it. So I'd just like another one.
Her logic is that she will buy me another lotion bottle, but the lotion bottle I already have, she wants to keep that one.
I told her hell no. I bought that one, you used that one when I said not to, so you can make it up and buy me another.
She called me "dirty, trifling" and a barrage of other names because she thinks she's being "fair". I don't even care if she buys another lotion for herself, but she just needs to get me another one. Again, she thought this was crazy.
TL;DR Am I wrong for wanting her to buy me another lotion, and keep my initial one, after she kept using my initial lotion despite me saying to not use it?
Edit: I kinda see the general consensus here, which is surprising, but I'll add more insight anyway. We don't have a good relationship. It's not technically her house, it's my mom's who's the main one on the lease. She doesn't have me pay rent, because as stated, I'm moving out by the end of the year, and because she also doesn't have a good relationship with her mother, she understands my want to get out of the house as quickly as possible, and doesn't want to hinder me. I've been working since 14. My original reason for getting a job was to keep things I buy for myself.
My grandmother used to be good with boundaries, except I'm not the only one she does this to. She does the same thing to my mom, (i.e. using things without permission, throwing away things without asking, ect ect.) Although I don't agree with the consensus so far, I'll continue to gauge responses.

2023.05.30 15:07 MindofaProstitute Escorting made me realize we're all peasants
I was over at some relatives' place yesterday, and these are white collar doctor and professional types who make like 150k-350k a year with master's degree and living in $1M+ homes. They ride my ass, as usual, telling me what to do with my life like get a "respectable" white collar office job, find a "respectable" white collar husband with a college degree, have a "respectable" haircut above my shoulders. I often felt judged for not making as much money or being as "educated". The most I ever made in my life was like 50k/year. I was washing the dishes for my aunt because she has hand arthritis from overworking them all these years (somehow they won't hire a maid), and I hear them talking about how expensive hotels are at $150/night. And in the back of my head I thought about the $500/night hotels that my clients stayed in while in town for business or pleasure, and who gave me couple hundred dollars in tips "just because". Or how someone spent $3500 on a date with me, and suggested I can get room service on his dime. Or how someone flew over to my city and was going to book a hotel where the cheapest room was $800/night just to see me, and then gave me the full $800 appointment fee for the inconvenience after cancelling our appointment on his end (so I never even met him). As a prostitute I've met men who have met the president, or who were personal friends of CEOs, politicians, and celebrities (or were themselves). If it wasn't for my escorting, I would never have come across men like this, nor seen their lifestyles. I would continued imagining that masters-degree holding workers making 150k/year with heavy student loans were "rich" and "elite". I am not particularly a head-turner either, and even my own clients aren't elite-elite, I have barely even scratched the surface of what real wealth is.
These doctors and white collar types think they're high ballers for making 200k a year and act all hoity toity though they wouldn't be able to maintain their lifestyles if they stopped working for their employer for even six months. They think they're better than the citizens who make 50k a year or 30k a year. No you dumb fucks, you're still peasants. We're all peasants who are fighting amongst each other and dragging each other down while there's a whole world out there of people who can spend 50k like it's a price of gum. People who can stay in $800/night hotels for months on end, spend $1000 on a dinner for two like it's going out to McDonalds, to them walking around in a public department store like Neiman Marcus or Saks is like walking around at a Dollar Tree or Goodwill.
To these whales, professional class workers like doctors and lawyers in their BMWs and McMansions are "hood rich", meaning they're not that impressive, they're only impressive to other peasants.
I don't look up at the white collar, master's degree-holding professionals as "rich people" or resent them (except their snobbery depending on the person). They're not really rich, they're peasants just like the rest of us. To look at doctors and lawyers as "balling" would be like when working class whites think native americans are balling and resent them because the latter is getting meager government benefits, or when tenants resent their landlords who mortgaged their 100k homes and view the latter as "the bourgeois ownership class" and imagine dragging them down Marxist style whenever the landlord asks for their monthly $300 rent, all the while ignoring the actual rich people out there influencing their lives from a distance.
I am not that special either. I only crossed path with the rich... all because some random rich guy decided that I, some random non-rich girl, was what he needed to get his dick wet that night. I was so nervous to see them and realized many were just as nervous to see me. And that despite their wealth they're still human and that nobody has it all. Nobody.
