2023.03.20 22:40 No_Privacy_Anymore Hindenburg rebuttal

As we have gotten more new members recently I periodically get questions about the short report. While we have discussed that in many ways over the last year+ the discussion is spread out in various comments. I thought it would be helpful to have a summary rebuttal which I might pin at the top.
I will edit this post over time to add supporting links for each rebuttal portion as needed.
Here was the short report from the tail end of "peak SPAC" days.
https://hindenburgresearch.com/purecycle/
1. PCT is an ESG-themed SPAC. – That obviously means it is a fraud.
2. The SPAC sponsor makes money regardless because it is a SPAC. This deal was from from Roth Capital which has a bad reputation for a variety of reasons.
3. Founding CEO has not had success with past companies – No mention of the new CEO since that transition didn’t happen. No mention that Mike Otworth was able to successfully raise a huge amount of capital, including the $250 million muni-bond that made Ironton possible.
4. The technology – Why didn’t the company keep it in house or license to a major company.
5. Ability to source feedstock at attractive pricing – I believe the last 2 years have addressed almost all of the concerns about the ability to source low-cost feedstock. They acquired new contracts for Ironton in 3 weeks after Ravago bailed out. They are oversubscribed for the first 2 lines at Augusta. The European plant is 125% subscribed for feedstock on the first line. Detailed budget numbers for Ironton show they are meeting or beating the SPAC presentation estimates for feedstock costs. The company also made additional capital investments to improve the design to be able to handle higher levels of PE in the feedstock.
6. Claims that customers are unwilling to pay a premium in bulk. The current economics were shown with an expected sales price of $1.10 / lb. Customers are accepting the “Feedstock +” pricing model and signing new 20-year agreements. End user pricing does not appear to be a problem. Talco plastics was skeptical of the profit margins, but the company has just reiterated the expected margins for a steady-state Ironton. That plant will be the most expensive they ever build so future plants are likely to be even more profitable.
  1. Greenwashing - The report makes various claims of “greenwashing” and says this is all a shame to fool investors. I believe the fact that P&G included Dustin in their January meetings in Davos shows you this isn’t greenwashing. P&G is counting on having this material as part of their supply chain. The company has signed a JV agreement with SK geo centric after this report. They have new board members from Milliken Chemical. They have an HOA with Mitsui. They won a competition for a prime piece of real estate at a port in Belgium. They signed a major supply agreement with Berry Global. These are not the kinds of things you would see for a “green washing” exercise. They are gearing up for massive amounts of expansion on a global basis.
For those of you paying attention on Twitter, the shorts have a creeping thesis as past accusations don't hold water. What else have they thrown out or ignored?
  1. The Ravago contract cancellation must mean something was wrong! Oops, they forgot to mention the company got replacement contracts in ~3 weeks. The new sales agreement should generate more than $2 million additional revenue per year and uses the need Feedstock + pricing.
  2. The company has now received one NOL from the FDA and has a letter of intent for a wider range of feedstocks that should eventually turn into an NOL.
  3. The company will lose the right to Augusta location because they didn't close financing in 2022 when the funding market blew up. Note: the company would have liked to raise debt earlier before interest rates soared but they needed more documentation for the exact August design before they could go to market and financial conditions had changed. Solution: pay a modest option fee of $25,000 / month and wait until Ironton is online to raise debt.
  4. The company defaulted. They are going to have to give the bondholders an equity stake. The bond holders are going to try to repossess...yadda yadda yadda. They are going to have to do an equity raise and dilute shareholders again. Ooops. That was wrong also.
  5. The facility at Winter Garden will never open because of local opposition. This is unfortunately because they have some local support but clearly they are going to do a prep site at Augusta. They will have some location in Florida where they can sort plastic before shipping it longer distances.
As Dustin said on the last call, the company now controls its own destiny. They need to get Ironton up and running safely. That will resolve all outstanding questions and the share price will begin to reflect the growth and profit opportunity here. As a community we should also work on a shared valuation model with our own forecasts of revenue and profits. No need to rely on investment banks for something we do on our own. The company made it super simple with the numbers they provided on the recent slides.

2023.03.20 22:35 PartiallyCharged Early Access Sorcerer - Recap and Review

Howdy, folks. Long time Diablo-enjoyer here. I wanted to play just a couple hours of the D4 early access weekend so as not to burn out on the early game pre-release. Instead I became totally captivated by the sorcerer and spent most of Sunday digging through everything she has to offer. So now– hours later–I thought it might be fun to organize my thoughts and share them with you all.
Let’s get a few things out of the way first.
1) I played exclusively on world tier 2. I cannot comment on WT1.
2) I dabbled in the other two classes, but I only dug deep on sorcerer. Everything here is strictly in-class. I’m not making any assumptions or assertions about how sorc stacks up to rogue or barb.
3) I didn’t have time to get to absolutely everything. Someone has to clean up this house, you know! (It’s me. I’m the one that has to clean the house. The cats sure aren’t doing it.)
4) Obviously, everything here only applies to what’s available so far. There’s probably a skill I’m going to talk smack about which, with the right legendary aspect, full 50 point build, and perfect paragon board, turns out to be a certified ripper. That’s fine. We’ll get there when we get there. I maintain that it would be cool if stuff was good more or less from the time you can use it, though, and will be operating under that principle.
5) I will express negative opinions toward some aspects of the design in this, but I have deep and abiding respect for the designers of this game. Every game, for that matter. I dabble in design and even the baby card games for babies that I’ve worked on in my spare hours seem overwhelmingly difficult to make at times. People make games. Real people. I don’t ever want to forget that and, if you choose to comment, I ask you not to forget it either.
6) Furthermore, I have deep and abiding respect for you and your opinions. No kappa. I’m not here to yuck your yum or tell you you’re doing something wrong. If you’re having a good time, you’re winning the game and I salute you.
7) What this all adds up to, is that I have spent a lot of time playing, taking notes on, and thinking about this game and in particular this class this weekend. It’s led me to some moderately firm opinions. If you disagree, I think that’s great. I want you to disagree with me. Let’s talk it out. But please be chill and respectful. If something I say about the game angers you, I would ask that you not damage your mental health and mine taking it out here. Thank you, truly.
So, the sorcerer. Pretty nifty, huh?
The tl;dr is that I think the class is very cool, and the game is very cool, and I had a lot of fun.
But.
There are definitely some things that stand out to me as not well balanced. A couple of skills seem to dominate the pack, and a few are outright stinkers. What I’m going to do is go through each skill individually, then fire off a few random thoughts.
And one more time for the back row: I liked this game and I liked this class. All criticism comes from a place of love, and for the desire to be as good for as many people as it possibly can. I wish to see the game elevated, not torn down.
On to the skills!

BASIC

Sad to start on this note, but I think the sorcerer basics are woefully underdeveloped. Spark, Frost Bolt, and Fire Bolt practically feel like the same skill. All three of them are just little baby bolts of energy that don’t look or sound particularly interesting. And mechanically, the impact of their base damage as well as the upgrades are so minimal that most of the time I’d rather just be dodging while my mana recovers.
Arc Lash though? Arc Lash is where it’s at. The numbers are better–as they should be since it’s a close range skill–but they’re much better. Add it to the wide cleave and this is the beginning of a solid basic skill. Also it’s very visually distinct, I love the orchestra conductor animation with the lash whipping back and forth.
I realize it’s probably too late to make such a sweeping change, but the three bolts could actually, literally be the same skill–call it “Elemental Bolt”--and the upgrades could apply different elemental effects, making room for other, more interesting skills basics. (Yes this would break the current skill->improvement->specialization layout followed by all the other skills, I think that’s OK.)
In any case, the other major failing of the basics is that they don’t generate any mana by default. I would really like to feel a bit of a push/pull dynamic between Basic Spell/Big Spell. And right now, they generate no mana, or very meager mana with the right upgrades, in addition to outputting damage that feels insufficient and upgrade effects that feel marginal. I say bump their numbers (generously), and consider adding some base mana regen. Maybe 3-5? Make me feel like I have a reason to weave them into my attack patterns.

CORE

Overall this crop is much better. Thematically distinct, with solid visuals and good game feel. Numerically though, there are some stark disparities. Starting at the top and going counter-clockwise we have…
-Incinerate feels like the worst of the lot. Channeled spells are always tricky to get right; standing still is dangerous and, for me at least, less interesting than bobbing and weaving. I don’t think Incinerate threads the needle. The damage output and mana cost don’t justify the downside of planting my feet. Looks cool as hell though.
-Fireball is… it’s fireball, you know? It’s a classic, and it’s doing what I’d expect it to do here. Pretty middle of the pack in terms of numerical output, quality of life, and visual flair.
-Frozen Orb is functionally a very similar skill. It has more AoE, the utility of chill, and some razzle-dazzle to the animations. But the damage is so much lower than fireball that it feels lacking. I think it needs a damage bump. (But maybe I just look back too fondly upon my days as an Ice Queen in Diablo 2. xD)
-Ice Shards is the core skill I spent the least time with. I tried it in a couple different packages, but couldn’t find the use case. If I’m being honest, it kinda feels like a Basic after a couple of upgrades, not a Core. If you love this one I definitely want to hear from you.
-Chain Lightning, I’m pretty confident, makes the rest of these spells look like chumps. It is good at clear, good at single target, and the mobility it affords is unparalleled. You just fire it and go. Seriously, look at the numbers it does for the cost, and then remember that you press that button once and can’t miss, provided your cursor was on any monster, and you get to duck dive and dodge while it bounces hither and yon, smiting your foes. I don’t think it’s too strong though, I think it feels perfect. Just what I want from a Core. If the others could be brought up to this level. I’d be extremely happy. One complaint though… why doesn’t it look like chain lightning? ;__; Come on, gimme the classic forked lightning, baby! I miss it so much here.
-Charged Bolts: Another Core that probably looks better if it’s put more on par numerically with Chain Lightning. The shotgun spread of random projectiles is another classic, and being able to get bonus effects for dumping them into a single target at point blank range is pretty cool.

DEFENSE

I think these skills are overall in a pretty good place.
-Flame Shield seems almost there. The burn numbers feel a touch low and the cooldown a touch high. It’s not a “true” defensive skill, more of a mixed use skill. And since at least one solid defensive cooldown seems pretty necessary, I’d like to see this one have a bit more muscle as an offensive skill, or a bit more defensive power added in somewhere. Maybe some bonus resistances? But then it starts to infringe on Ice Armor’s design space, so I’m not sure.
-Teleport is a staple for a reason, and this version is great. The upgrades are fine if you want them but they’re far from necessary. A true one point wonder, a classic for a reason. And I love the VFX. 10/10 no notes.
-Ice Armor is a solid defensive option for any build that’s cool (haha get it cool) with standing still and getting punched in the face. I still think that archetype is going to need more support than is currently available–whether through late/postgame stuff we haven’t seen or through some adjustments to skills like Incinerate–but I’m willing to bet this will feature in many such builds.
-Frost Nova is very, very good. Reasonable cooldown, good area. Making it inflict Vulnerable is great, and lengthening the Vulnerable duration against bosses who are immune to Freeze is a smart move. Relevant in all situations.

CONJURATION

I’m just gonna say it up top; Hydra is here, everyone else can go home now. Details follow.
-Hydra is bananapants compared to the other two. The DPS value is good, both against groups and single targets. The damage to mana ratio is obscenely high. The upgrades are great, especially the one that gives a bonus head when healthy. That’s just 33% more damage, straight up, in almost every situation. Honestly this is the one sorcerer skill in the game that could get nerfed and probably still be good, I think.
-Ice Blades makes me so sad. I find it possible that in the late game/postgame, with enough cooldown reduction and ways to make enemies vulnerable, you could do a really cool thing where Ice Blades makes Ice Blades which make Ice Blades… until you have an Icy, Bladed army slicing up the whole map. It’s certainly the first thing I thought when I read the package over. But right now it’s verging on useless. It moves and attacks so slowly, for a pitiful amount of damage. Even if it turns out to be a build-around late game powerhouse, it needs help now.
-Lightning Spear feels like the actually appropriate power level for this group. Hydra clowns on it numerically, but that’s not Lightning Spear’s fault. My one complaint is that visually, it’s insufficiently distinct from Chain Lightning. I’m not 100% sure but I think they’re actually the same projectile! This look is fine for Lightning Spear, so to restate, please make chain lighting look like, you know. A chain of lightning. ___^

MASTERY

This is a flock of strange ducks to me. In essence, Meteor, Firewall, and Ball Lightning feel like Cores in disguise. They’re just nukes. Blizzard set my expectation that these skills would be utility-based supplemental damage dealers. Kinda like how Conjurations are longer-lasting, fire-and-forget, continuous damage dealers. But ¾ feel like Cores; repeatable nukes to spend most of your mana on. In a vacuum this is fine, my only real quibble is that you have to spend points passing through the cluster of Core skills. And in a world where this is true, I would like to see more options for passives to buy in the Core cluster for builds that evolve to use a Mastery instead of a Core as the bread and butter damage button. (Bread and Butter Damage Button is the name of my cottagecore heavy metal band, btw.) Now let’s look at each skill individually.
-Blizzard does what you want Blizzard to do. (The skill that is, not the development studio; I make no claims as to whether or not Blizzard Entertainment is doing what you, personally, want them to do. __). This is the epitome of “nailed it” for this skill group.
-Meteor, man. When I first read the description of Meteor in the Diablo 2 manual I lost my damn mind. Then I cast it, sat there for a minute and said to myself, wait, is that it? Then Diablo 3 gave me the Meteor I’d imagined so many years earlier. Several different kinds in fact! This meteor? It makes the cut. Sorry, that might feel like a tangent, but the A/V, the game feel, the fantasy of Meteor is of particular importance to me. From a usage perspective it seems to fill its own niche, so that’s great, and the numbers seem solid.
-Speaking of Diablo 2, y’all remember Firewall owning the world? Conceptually this skill has never been my favorite. It seems like it should be a defensive or zoning tool, but Diablo enemies have zero sense of self preservation and will happily charge to their death for even the slightest chance to stab you just one time. That’s fine though, I know lots of other people love Firewall as a primary damage dealer. I don’t however feel like the numbers are there. Enemies in this game move pretty fast and I never felt like I found a way to kite enemies effectively for the damage to come out at a reasonable speed, especially for the mana cost.
-Ball Lightning isn’t working for me on any level. It doesn’t move fast enough to reliably hit distant targets; it doesn’t move slowly enough to reliably multi-hit close targets. Also, it’s really infringing on Frozen Orb’s design space. It’s a primary damage dealer in the form of a slow orb that pierces all targets. I actually think this skill would feel a lot better if the basic usage became the immobile version that can proc from one of the legendary aspects. That’s getting close to Firewall’s turf though.

ULTIMATE

Two of these feel like Ultimates to me, one doesn’t. Can you guess which before reading? Try it! Or don’t that’s fine, too.
-Deep Freeze is very, very good. Almost like an upgraded, long-cooldown Frost Nova. Immunity, plus barrier and Chill/Freeze that persist after that, plus (modest) damage in a (huge!!) area. Powerful, versatile skill.
-Inferno also feels appropriate to call an ultimate. Unique VFX with real wow factor, and chunky damage on a long cooldown. Though I do think maybe the vacuum effect should be inherent and that upgrade replaced with something else. It doesn’t feel quite powerful enough without it.
-Unstable Currents leaves me pretty cold. For one, I usually wanna really feel my ultimate when I hit that button. For another, it seems like the lowest impact (and highest variance, thanks to the random spell cast) of the three, but also has the longest cooldown for some reason. I think it’s a really neat idea, But it’s not quite coming together for me, and I don’t know what I would suggest be done with it.

ENCHANTMENTS

There are simply too many of these for me to have spent much time with most of them. But my game sense tells me that, most of the time, Fireball is going to be really hard to beat. Really, really hard. A huge percentage of this game is about clearing packs, and Fireball clears packs. It has limited utility against bosses, but it’s free to switch your Enchantment before a boss fight. At least for now? Maybe in postgame dungeons we’ll be locked in, like a D3 rift? But then again, we’ll get a second slot eventually, so I don’t know. Spending one skill point or getting a point in Fireball from an item right now feels as close to mandatory as anything for Sorcerer.

RANDOM NOTES

Here are a few brain droppings that didn’t fit into the above.
-Why isn’t Stun a searchable keyword in the sorcerer tree?
-Part of the reason I advocated for some inherent mana restoration from Basics is because mana recovery feels a bit too slow. Maybe more than a bit. There are a dozen different knobs that could tune this, from Basics feeling punchier and/or recovering mana, to base mana regen going up, to it being more common on gear, to base spell costs being lowered a touch… You get the idea. I wanna use my cool skills, let me use my cool skills, that’s all I’m sayin’. Probably in the late and postgame this will cease to be an issue, but I’d still like to fire off my main skill a bit more often.
-Please show me the number of points required to reach each tier of skill so I can more effectively pull and replace single points. For example, even after I have two points in Basics, I would like to see on screen somewhere–maybe off to the side, maybe on a tooltip–that it takes a total of two points invested before I can put points in Core skills. (Obviously this is more for stuff way further down the tree, that was just an easy example.)
-We won’t know until later in the game, but is there ever a reason to deliberately mix elements? I’m all for a good Only Lightning, Other Elements Need Not Apply sort of build, but I also like the way D3 had skills and gear that encouraged mixing and matching. Right now it looks like the more you can mono-focus the better, so I’m hoping gear and/or Paragon Boards will open up some builds that combine two or even three damage types.
That’s all I have for now! What do my Sorcerous Comrades think? Satisfied? Underwhelmed? Haha Hydra go brrrr? Counting the minutes until June, but until then, I'd love to hear from you.

Personal Chart of the Week

One of the joys some people have on the chart is seeing their own impact on the chart. Whether its seeing your #1 song at #1, or seeing it bubbling under, people like seeing songs they like being adored by other users. In this section, one lucky chart participant will see their own chart and the impact it had on the full chart this week. NOTE: In the case of charts exceeding 15 songs, I will trim down the lowest tie to fit the chart by using the songs that charted the highest (or are funniest). This week, we have the chart of NapsAndNetflix!

The tracking dates for the next weekly chart is March 16, 11:00 PM GMT - March 23, 10:59 AM GMT and results come out the next Monday, March 27.

How The Chart Works:

These charts are created based on how frequently each song appears in the top 10 songs/albums for all of the users signed up for the chart. If the song or album occupies that user's #1 spot in their individual chart, it receives 15 points, then 14 points for #2, so on and so forth until 6 points for #10. If there is a tie, which is a common occurrence, then the number of points is averaged across those positions, e.g. if two songs are tied for #1, both will receive 14.5 points. Oftentimes there will be multiple songs tied for the last place, in which case the number of points each song receives decreases until it bottoms out at 1 point each.

2023.03.20 22:20 Carcharodon-123 Breaking an employment contract because I desperately need a better paying job - USA Wisconsin

Was forced to make this on a new account because talking about this supposedly breaks the terms of the agreement.
I am 12.5 months into a 27 month employment contract working as a contractor doing software development. A summary of the agreement is that you are trained as a developer and expected to work for the business for 2 years in order to pay back your education/training. If you break the contract you are expected to pay $20,000 for the training. However I have heard from other employees that the price may be based on time left in your contract so my guess is I would owe around $10,000. Here is a copy of that section from the contract. I removed the details/identifying info.
" If Person converts to a full-time employee at a client of *** during the 27month period and voluntarily terminates employment with the client or is released due to cause, performance reasons, or professional misconduct prior to completion of 27 months from start date of the Training Program, Person agrees to reimburse **** the full cost of training ($20,000.00.) Person grants *** the right to deduct the training cost from any monies due upon release from the Training Program or placement Person agrees to pay **** the fullbalance of what remains owing within 15 days of separation from the Training Program or placement. Person agrees to be responsible for all legal costs incurred by ***to recover the amount owed by Person. "
Right now I only make $50,000 max but is sometimes less because it is based on hourly work..and with no real benefits. I ran into some long term health problems.. and with the cost of living was looking to leave earlier If I could make more money. Good news is I am expecting a job offer this week for a full time position that has real benefits and a retirement..not to mention is almost double my current salary. Not really something I want to pass up especially based on my circumstances. Also my current client/placement is on a 1 year contract and is up for review in June. They used to hire people full time and buyout your contract, however due to budget costs the last two people they were supposed to hire did NOT have their contract renewed and were also let go from their employment contract because they had too many contractors looking for jobs and did not want to worry about finding them new placement...so one of my plans was to wait it out and hope they just let me go as well. I've heard stories of people in the past that have been able to break their contracts in the past and seem to get out without paying fees...but I don't know how they did it and I don't want this to come back to haunt me later with a ton of legal fees I can't afford. What would be the best way to handle this situation?

2023.03.20 22:20 Icy-Giraffe-8530 The Primarch of the Blood Ravens is one of the Censured Primarchs, not Magnus.

For those who don't know the lore of Warhammer 40,000, I'll give you a brief intro:
The Emperor: ruler of mankind and kind of a jerk (you'll see why).
Space Marines: 8 foot tall posthumans, devoted to The Emperor (mostly).
Primarchs: Super-duper Space Marines used as the template for their Legions DNA and style of warfare.
So, the reason I came to this conclusion is something that I discovered while reading the novels: 2 of the 20 Primarchs and their legions of Space Marines were censured and destroyed for reasons nobody knows, and all memory of them is wiped from everyone in The Imperium, except for The Emperor and maybe 2 other people. After that and a few other reasons later on, half the remaining Space Marine Legions rebel against The Emperor, The Emperor ends up in a sort of coma but not before killing the leader of the rebels. After this, the Legions are broken down into Chapters of 1000 marines each as to limit their power and ability to diddle the galaxy, one of these Chapters is The Blood Ravens. One of the Primarchs gets mortally wounded and put in stasis, only to be revived 10,000 later for reasons that are not important to this theory.
The revived Primarch, Robute Guiliman starts reshaping and rebuilding The Imperium, which has become a bunch of religious, Xenophobic, technophobic jerks, and unleashes a new, shiny version of Space Marines, with the help of a techno-wizard called Belisarius Cawl. Now we get to where my theory comes from!
During the events of the novel "Dark Imperium" Belisarius Cawl mentions he has access to the genetic material of all the Primarchs, and makes it clear he means all of them. The Primarch of the Blood Ravens isn't recorded in Imperial Records but many theorise it to be one of the traitor Primarchs, Magnus The Red. I submit to you, however, that being as nobody in the Imperium had any memory of The Censured Primarchs, there is a good chance some poor well-meaning Imperial scientist came across the genetic material of The Censured and used it to create the Blood Ravens chapter.

2023.03.20 22:19 No_Activity_3820 HCOL - no savings - advice?

Hi all - I have lurked this sub pretty aggressively for some time now. First of all - thank you to this community for all the useful insight. I’m using a throwaway for this post for obvious reasons. Hoping to get some opinions here that I could maybe apply to my family’s financial position - thank you in advance for the responses!
First for the stats:
Married - Dual Income. Ages early to mid thirties. 2 children under 4 years old and live in HCOL area in suburb of major US city. Combined Salary is 350k + combined bonus of 80-100k Net Income on a monthly basis excluding bonuses comes out to around 17.5k.
Monthly Spending Groceries:$1,100 Dining Out/Delivery:$800 Misc.:$2,000 Health/Wellness:$400 Alcohol:$250 Gas:$250 Dry Cleaning:$30 Mortgage include tax/insurance: $4,500 Heating/Electric: $210 Auto Insurance:$150 Car 1:$350 (Leased ends 10/23 22k buyout) Car 2:$550 (Leased ends 8/23 25k buyout) Mobile+Internet+Streaming TV+Spotify:$270 Children 529s:$700 (350 per child $23k in combined market value) Daycare:$3,500 HELOC: $700 ($8,100 remaining 7% interest) Student Loan: $340 ($23,800 remaining 3.25% interest) Life insurance: $350 Sinking funds for home maintenance/wategarbage collection/non monthly items:$800
My wife are very grateful for our family and our careers. Our struggle is likely what is described as lifestyle creep? We have a good income however are struggling to save on a regular basis. We get to the end of the month and can’t believe we have no money left. We had a major home renovation last year (new roof) and used a HELOC to handle that. We used a large portion of the end of year bonus to pay off a chunk and will payoff the balance with bonus that comes in May. Planning to throw the rest of that bonus in savings so that will free up the $700 a month we were using to attack that debt.
We both max out our 401ks at work so have a nice chunk in retirement savings but our emergency fund is non-existent and keeps me up at night. We are sitting on around 15k-20k in savings right now. We are struggling on what we could do to reduce our spending. The misc. stuff just adds up every month with kids birthdays, kids clothes, adult clothing, workout classes etc.. Maybe we need psychological advice, I don’t know. We aim to begin saving our bonuses aggressively to build up our emergency fund. Curious with another set of eyes on our budget if there is anything glaring here? What would you reduce first? What should we do about our vehicles? The leases are ending and I’m realizing leasing is probably the wrong thing to do. Should we buy them out with bonus money or finance and keep the cash in the bank for emergencies? Search for cheaper vehicles? Should we focus on the student loan at all? Would love some advice. And again - thank you all.

2023.03.20 22:15 No_Ad1762 Me [35 M] with ex flirt [29 F]: she became employee of an office that is a branch of another office that I rule --- **tl;dr**: A girl treated me bad and lied to me; what I have to do now?!

When I was 29 years old, 6 years ago, in August I started dating a girl of 21 who at first seemed to be the right one: funny, smart, so much chemistry between. The First 3 months were super beautiful.
in November she started to be less in touch, citing as reasons the fact of studying and exams and also the environmental context (she was in a university environment very strict under the aspect of rules), telling me also that she had an elderly relative with health problems, etc…. Basically, passing motivations anyway, and she reassured me by telling me that if we messaged less than before was exclusively due to those reasons. Distance was a factor, but apparently not insurmountable.
The fact of the matter is that since November we chatted lesser and lesser, less, but she always saying that there was nothing but too many commitments. that staff progressively escalates though, as she texts me back a day and then disappears directly for 10 days.
In december, after 10 days of ghosting I texted her telling her that she could have told me that she wasn't interested anymore. And she defended herself by always saying again it was just the period etc. and used the phrase "right now I feel like I don't have the head for a relationship."
It didn't make sense: she had told me that the causes of the fact that we were chatting less were all related to temporary factors, but they would be over soon (exams would be over soon, her academic year was ending in December, and from December 20 to Epiphany she would have 3 weeks of vacation).
The fact is that throughout the Christmas vacations she disappears. On January 11 I seek her out and have a contentious discussion: I tell her that she had been telling me liars me for a month and a half and that everything she had told me was bullshit, that in fact her motives were not that, since she had had 3 weeks of complete freedom at Christmas and she had given a damn anyway.
I shove it in her face that I had realized her plan: that she had done everything in such a way that she would push me to me to get fed up and been done eith her. So that she could get away with a "clean face". Instead I waited for her at that time, only at Christmas the "bubble burst" and she didn't know what to do anymore. January 11, 2018 was the last time we spoke.
The following April, on day 23th she published a story in which she said "+ 3”. So she had been engaged for 3 months to a fellow collegue of hers (she gave preference to the need to have sex at hand) that is January 24, two weeks after she dismissed me. From there I realize that she lied to me, that she had cleverly set the stage to take me out so that it would lead to me getting fed up and break with her.
5 years have passed and in the work environment by a twist of fate I have been transferred to manage an office that has under control another office where now she works as employee. In this new position I will stay for 3 years and a part of me would really like to return all the harm she has done to me giving instructions to her boss about making her spend 3 years in the worst possible way. Do you think it would be fair or i should be more mature?
TL;DR: i could have the chance to make a person to make amends after she made fun of my loyalty an thought I deserved lies

2023.03.20 22:12 ainsfloaveron My journey as a mediocre US IMG who matched into their #1 in Psych.

Hi all! First thing's first, congratulations to everyone who matched. I know not everyone got their desired specialty or location, but the horror that is residency applications is now past us and the only thing to do now is keep moving forward. Things will eventually fall into place. For those who didn't match, I'm so sorry. This process is brutal - emotionally and financially - and I hope you're holding up alright.
This post is for my fellow IMGs (honestly US students too if you vibe with it). I understand that the anxiety of going through this whole process eats away at you when you're feeling overwhelmed and underprepared, so I'd like to detail my journey from the beginning until now for those that may find solace in reading others' stories, especially if you identify with it. Those that hyperfocus on timing of exams and USCE, and the 'who what where when why' of things might appreciate this; I'll explain my strategy when approaching different parts of the application. What I ultimately hope to convey is 1. even the mediocre students can make it, and 2. there's no one 'right way' to do things. And I hope that this is able to encourage you to continue pushing forward, especially if you feel you're at a standstill in your own journey.
Growing up I was never the most academically disciplined. I sometimes joke that I was the only Asian in school that took majority regulars classes. I was fortunate in that my mother had the singular requirement that I simply not fail any classes, so that's pretty much what I did. I coasted through school while I saw friends beat themselves up over grades better than I ever even strived for. The way everyone stressed over getting into great colleges? High SAT scores? Foreign concepts to me. That same attitude carried through to med school.
I ended up not applying to colleges in the US and instead decided to go to Latin America to study for XYZ reasons. My grades were decent first year, worse second year, and even worse third year. When I say I was mediocre, I mean mediocre. It was to the point where I had to get >25/30 on final exams to pass classes, and I spent all three years stressed out of my mind because I was always in danger of failing something. It wasn't because I was dumb. Laziness is powerful, and I just never cared enough to sit down and study properly for anything.
Rotations were better; I'm better working with my hands than with my face in a book. I had fun in the hospital, as crazy and fast-paced as it is. Grades were still meh, because I still wasn't actually studying. I essentially spent my clinical years learning empirically instead of academically. This also doesn't mean I didn't know anything. No life was ever in danger because of my lack of knowledge. I simply do horribly on written exams and never cared to strive for A's.
Graduation came and went (2020) and I moved back to the states in 2021 to begin preparing for Step in July. I took Step 1 November 2021, OET January 2022, and Step 2 end of May 2022. Step 1 was average, and I don't actually know my Step 2 score lol. I wrote two incredibly detailed posts (1,2) about my Step 1 experience. This means there is a gap in my CV from October 2020 to November 2021, but I decided Step studying and 'moving my entire damn life back to the states' was good enough of an excuse to bullshit my way through if asked about during interviews.
My approach to apps in general were: do everything on time and completed before September, fill up my CV as much as I could with extra US associated stuff by September (and afterward in case I didn't match and had to update my CV for the 2024 cycle), and network as much as possible, which included joining online Psych caucus meetings and going to annual Psych conferences.
USCE was done in:
I didn't want to have any gaps in my CV now that post-Nov 2021 I emerged from Step hermit land and there was activity again, so I took up volunteering at a health center September 2022 and started tutoring high school students in Spanish. I've also been doing Psych related research since May 2022 with a well known CAP PD, and I was able to fill my CV with stuff I've done since meeting her.
My PS was written painstakingly slowly between July and August 2022 and sent to 10+ people to edit. Too many? Yes. But I had an idea of how I wanted it to look, and my FOMO meant the more eyes, the better. I knew which edits to accept and which to reject. What I looked for in edits were things I was missing that I wasn't noticing, better wording, and order of information (what to mention in which paragraph?). There were enough edits that my PS was improved substantially, but not so many that I lost my voice. I asked non-medical, medical non-Psych, and Psych people to read it, because I wanted perspectives from all sides.
What I lacked in academically I made up for in other areas. I filled up every single character in the hobbies section. I put mainly non-medical things in the supplemental application. I complemented an experience in PS with one of the entries in the supplemental (as well as an entry in my main CV), so things were connected throughout my entire application and explained in detail in different ways. My strategy here was for them to see I didn't only care about medicine and that I've done and do more things with my time that are enriching to my person and would contribute to my formation as a psychiatrist. Sounds corny, but it worked. Instead of filling my app with medicine, medicine, and medicine (understandable for more academically competitive specialties), I focused on everything outside of it and somehow made a type of association with medicine in the end. Besides the common questions asked in interviews, people mainly focused on my extracurriculars and asked what I did outside of medicine. I suppose I'm fortunate in wanting Psych since it's easier to do that than in other specialties, so obviously take this all with a huge ass grain of salt.
Applications were sent out the moment ERAS opened. I edited my CV with a friend (another applicant) the day before so she could catch errors I glossed over, and also for moral support. But I asked a non-medical friend to help me write my CV beforehand because she's chef's kiss for these kinds of things and I am very much not.
Before each interview I took propranolol cause I shake like no other when under pressure. I had an entire Word doc with every question from the Psych spreadsheet (and my answers in bullet points) on one half of the screen, and the video call on the other half. I made sure I was in a well lit and quiet area, with minimal visual contamination behind me. If I didn't know how to answer a question, I would stall in the most natural way possible. The way you look on paper gets you the interview. Once you're in the interview, social skills come into play and are in large part what determines if and where they rank you, so it was imperative for me to shine through with how I sat, how I spoke, how I answered, and damn, even how I breathed.
I sent out my LOI at the end of January, written with the help of two friends, and got a hopeful response from the PD. Didn't read too much into it, but I rode the wave of confidence until Match Day. Ended up matching there, and here we are now.
My point with all of this is:
Thank you if you've read this entire thing. And as always, AMA.

2023.03.20 22:04 RustedLegacy Army and police accused of cover up over use of plastic bullets

The Army and police have been accused of a cover-up in the deaths of children killed by rubber and plastic bullets during the Troubles.
BBC Spotlight has examined declassified material that reveals the Army knew it was too dangerous to fire the bullets at children, but it continued to do so.
Documents also show the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was firing a plastic bullet gun never fully cleared for use against people.
But this was kept quiet.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) declined to comment, citing legal reasons.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), which took over from the RUC following a rebrand in 2001, said the use of the weaponry is now strictly regulated.
The gun firing rubber, and later plastic, bullets was invented for Northern Ireland and designed to deter people rioting by hurting but not killing them.
At least 120,000 were fired during the Troubles.
Sixteen people were killed by rubber or plastic bullets during the Troubles. A 17th person was killed by a fall, possibly after being hit by one of the bullets.
Some were involved in street disorder. Others were bystanders.
Eight of the dead were children.
Others suffered serious injuries, including brain damage and blinding.
'He never got to grow up' The youngest person to die was 10-year-old Stephen Geddis who was hit by an Army plastic bullet at Divis Flats in Belfast in 1975.
Stephen's brother, Jim Geddis, told BBC NI's Spotlight programme: "I remember him being fairly timid. A quiet kid. I'd see him with his little friends. Just an unassuming kid.
This little guy never got to grow up and get married, have children of his own. Never happened."
Last year an inquest concluded Stephen was out playing and there was no justification for his shooting.
Documents uncovered during the inquest revealed that in 1971 the Army's own Land Operations Manual stated baton rounds should not be used against children.
But this instruction was never passed on to soldiers.
Six children died after being hit by Army plastic bullets.
The Geddis family's solicitor Padraig O'Muirigh claims "there is clear evidence of a cover up".
An MoD spokesperson said it would be inappropriate to comment because the soldier who shot Stephen is legally challenging the inquest findings.
In 1981, 15-year-old Paul Whitters was hit by a plastic bullet fired by the RUC during street disturbances in Londonderry. He was in a group of teenagers throwing stones.
Paul's mother Helen Whitters said: "This did not sit well with me because that's not who Paul was. We weren't political, let's put it like that. I had to face the fact he had a mask on and I still find that hard."
However, in 2007 a Police Ombudsman's investigation concluded there was no justification for police shooting Paul.
'We need answers' Recently declassified government documents have revealed the plastic bullet gun used by the RUC in his shooting was never fully medically tested for its potential risks to civilians.
Neither the public nor the Whitters family were ever told.
Ms Whitters said: "I still want to know all these years later why Paul was shot that night, and I've never got an answer. We do need some kind of an answer."
In a statement to Spotlight, Assistant Chief Constable, Alan Todd, sympathised with the Whitters family.
He said that policing has changed considerably in the past 42 years and the deployment and use of these weapons is now strictly regulated and approved.
He added that if the weapons were used, this is automatically referred to the police ombudsman.
Spotlight has also spoken to ex-soldiers who stand by the use of the riot-gun.
Colonel Richard Kemp, who commanded British troops, said: "To say that the plastic bullets should never have been used, I think is a foolish thing to say.
"The plastic bullet was a lifesaver, not just a lifesaver for the soldiers whose lives were at risk, but also a lifesaver for people involved in the riots."
You can watch BBC Spotlight Lethal: The Secret History of Plastic Bullets on BBC iPlayer or on BBC One Northern Ireland at 22:40 GMT on Tuesday.

2023.03.20 22:03 cbb88christian Negotiations Underway 2

(Author here, didn't realize I put an apostrophe in the first title. RIP, it's there forever now)
First Next
Date: May 3rd, 2235
"My what?" Tom asked, completely confounded.
Surrender? Is this alien actually asking for my surrender? The poor thing is shaking like a leaf, He pondered.
"Y-Your surrender. I'm here to accept it... Accept it from your leader or leaders specifically," Teresh stuttered, the device around their neck blinking blue with a robotic voice delivering it in sterile English.
"Okay, well... can we talk about that after you get medical attention? You look to be wounded," Tom explained, seeing a bit of dark red on its neck.
It looks more superficial than anything, not a deep cut. That knife though, did he try to stab himself? Tom analyzed, falling back on some of his training.
From what Tom could make out, the creature before him was bipedal like himself. Looks to be around four and a half feet tall, tops. Almost no muscle to speak of, clearly not a very physically strong species; or individual at the very least. The alien resembled a large avian in many ways, though it had two arms in addition to two sets of wings. What really stood out to him was the aliens face. It was shockingly human in many ways; in that it was able to express itself with the movement of its eyes and shorter beak. Tom was clearly able to see fear in its eyes, the slight shake of its feathers. Even more interestingly, it had a crown of feathers around the back of its head that dipped up and down, with its green feathers even shifting colors on occasion. He had thought it was the lighting at first, but it seemed this alien possessed some kind of camouflage ability or similar. Good lord, the biologists were going to have the discovery of the millennia when they got to him.
However, for now, he needed to assess the situation. Starting at the beginning:
The alien hailed all available frequencies and made no attempt to hide itself. It wasn't aware of the local electromagnetic fields so it's message was garbled and self-contained. The craft it arrived in didn't look to possess any weapons, and it freely complied to relinquish its ship. It is terrified of me to an extent, that much is obvious. At some point recently it had cut itself, either accidentally or an attempt to take its own life. Lastly, it is here to accept my surrender, or the surrender of humanity.
With all this in mind, Tom came to the most probable conclusion: Wherever this alien is from, it was sent here to perform this task but without any aid or support from armed forces. Meaning that it is considered expendable in some way or belonging to a pacifist organization. If I can discern what entity or government sent it here, we can begin to form a strategy for the defense of earth if need be.
While he was thinking, the alien was still shivering and terrified. Mustering a weak, "I will accept aid if you offer it. As a diplomat, I simply ask that you do not maim, brainwash, or torture me. It will not reflect well on your species."
He seems to think that we're a cruel, violent race for some reason. He's not entirely wrong, but I doubt he knows our history, Tom surmised.
"Again, not going to hurt you. If you'd allow, I'd like to take you to our medical ward. I can take care of that wound for you, if you'd allow," Tom relayed, keeping his tone calm and steady.
"W-What of the others, how do I know you will not attack me once I'm surrounded?" Teresh chirped.
"I'll get them to wait in the bridge. All I ask is that you put the weapon away. I won't be armed either," he replied.
He could see the gears in the alien's head turning. Building a repour with Teresh would help make the process easier. He'd could get Ally and Maxim to head back to the bridge, but man the comms so they could record and monitor everything. Cleaning and helping them with their wounds should build a level of trust, one that he can use to discover more about the alien.
"That is... equitable," they paused for a moment, "I accept. Just please make the others leave first."
"That's, that's great. Thank you Teresh, I'm happy to help you. Just set that off to the side, and I'll make sure it's just us," Tom replied, letting his posture ease.
Still facing Teresh, Tom slowly backed up and then out of the ship. Despite the other two wearing their helmets, he could tell exactly what they were thinking.
"The hell's going on? You've been in there for ages. Pilot dead or something?" Maxim asked. His voice reverberating inside their helmets.
"This ship too, computer had nothing on it. New model, old model?" Ally asked. She had a data pad in her hands and was tapping at the screen.
"Guys, I need you to trust me on this. You need to get to the bridge and shut off all comms. Nothing in or out. Keep this ship impounded and get on the cams and record everything that happens in med bay," Tom spoke rapidly but concisely. There was a pregnant pause in the air.
"Tom, what's going on?" Maxim asked, sounding worried.
"Haven't heard you talk like that in ages, what-?" Ally began.
"This is a matter of national security. I need you both to trust me. Man your posts, radio silence. Understood?" Tom interrupted, putting on a stern voice.
Seeing the man come back into his own, the two straightened their posture and saluted out of pure muscle memory. Delivering back a: "Sir yes sir!"
"At ease, now get the hell out of here," he commanded. Watching the two jump up and head for the door.
How long's it been, four, five years? He asked himself, shaking his head.
Tom climbed back up into the ship, just in time to watch his crewmates exit through the far door. He glanced over and saw Teresh's knife on the ships controls. The alien now standing and holding their neck with one of their clawed arms. It still looked terrified of him but was mustering up courage as far as he could tell.
"Are you ready?" He asked, holding out a hand.
"Y-Yes, thank you," Teresh replied. Slowly stepping forward, the click of his talons echoing through the ship.
Click, click, click, click.
With a great deal of hesitation, the alien eventually held out his other hand and allowed Tom to take it. Now slowly leading them both out of the ship and into the greater cargo space.
"You're doing great. The medical bay is on the right-hand side of the ship. I'll escort you up to the door, then take you down a few hallways to get there. Does that sound agreeable to you?" Tom asked again, making sure to keep his tone steady.
"It does. I will cooperate as long as my safety is assured," Teresh answered.
"And it is. I give you my word," he replied.
"Your... word?" They replied.
Right. Different species, different metaphors.
"It means my honor, my trust. My… respect. If that makes sense," he explained.
Their eyes widened, something seemed to garner recognition, "Honor, yes. I understand. I will take your... word."
"Good, thank you Teresh," Tom replied. Letting out a breath inside his helmet.
He had no idea what kind of eggshells he was walking around. This was completely out of his depth. He was just going to do his best to remain as civil and neutral as possible. No more metaphors or complicated concepts just in case it might cause offense. They are a diplomat after all. Best not to muddy earth's politics so early in its new development.
The two began to travel towards the side of the ship. Tom turned the valve on the rough metallic door, and it let out a hiss, the door slowly opening. Not the best first impression of humanity. His ship wasn't the prettiest out there but damn was she dependable. Never a problem he couldn't fix or a mission she couldn't complete. Tarva never disappointed. She could, however, use a new coat of paint.
Much of the interior was varying degrees of brown or gray. They passed through several closed doors, vacant crew rooms or extra storage. The lights tracking their progress as they went, some flickering ever so gently to show its age. This went on for another fifty to sixty feet, before Tom opened the door at the end of the hall. Entering into a small white room, fit with two cots, a cabinet full of OTC meds, and a few IV's. He had no clue what effect the drugs would have on the alien, so best to avoid those for now. Instead, he gestured towards the cot on the side.
"Please, sit. I'm going to grab some gauze and medical tape. It should be enough to stop the bleeding," he explained, watching Teresh clamber up onto the cot.
He actually couldn't help himself from smiling under his helmet. It was adorable, but he knew that was an inappropriate attitude to have for the present situation, so he suppressed it for now. Teresh sat with their skinny avian legs hanging of the side and waving like a child's, which was even more adorable than before. He turned towards them with the gauze in hand.
"If you're uncomfortable, you could apply it yourself. It just might be difficult considering..." Tom explained, only to see Teresh put up a claw.
"I will be fine. You may administer aid without worry," they offered, though he could still see them shaking from here.
It was then that Tom had an idea, though it might be a bad one. The alien seemed frightened by his helmet, he could remove it and hope it made the interaction easier. However, if there were any microbes present it may be disastrous for the human race. Maybe he'd be even more terrified of his human appearance. Admittedly he wasn't the most handsome guy, but he was more concerned that he may perceive him as some kind of "predator species" or something similar.
Biting his tongue, Tom decided to play it safe and slowly stepped towards Teresh. Once he was in front of them, he began to dab the wound with gauze before covering and taping it. He wasn't sure what kind of effect alcohol would have on their biology, so he kept it away for now. Once outfitted, he could see Teresh's breathing begin to slow, and become calmer. The avian gave him a look, the feathers around their head turning a deep blue.
"Thank you, Tom. I will not forget this," Teresh said, giving him a feeling of pure pride.
"I'm happy to help anytime. I hope this is the start of something great," he replied, exhaling.
"Yes, I think so too," Teresh affirmed.
Thank God I can still do something right in my life. Now, I need to make sure Ally and Maxim haven't lost their minds and contact an old friend. Things are about to move really quickly at home. He pondered.
"I'm going to step outside a moment to contact someone who can get us where you need to go. Do you mind staying there for me?" Tom asked.
"Of course, do what you need to. I'll do whatever it takes to get my mission done," Teresh replied, his translator concluding his speech.
------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile...
Mikael had just finished making breakfast. A small bowl of corn flakes, a side of toast, and half a glass of orange juice. It was what he considered the most luxurious breakfast. He sat down at his table and looked out into a beautiful vista. Neo Washington may have had the most pretentious name he had ever heard, but the colony itself was a wonder to behold. Set on the moon, is was the first permanent settlement outside of earth's atmosphere. Even though the job could be an absolute bore at times, the view was well worth it. He could pick out almost all the continents from where he was. Sometimes catching a passing satellite, green and red blinking lights in the distance. He took his spoon and hand and went to take the first bite of breakfast.
Zzzzz! Zzzzz!
"Ugh," he groaned, his face curling into a scowl. "It's my day off. What could it possibly be."
With a click, his holo-projector whirred to life. Seeing a familiar face appear, a light blue sheen over his features. Mikael cleared his throat, "Tom, why are you calling me on my day off? I was just about to enjoy my cereal, and you know how much my breakfast means to me."
"Sir, this is an emergency. I need you to authorize an impromptu docking as soon as possible," Tom replied.
"What? On the base? You should still have clearance to land," Mikael asked, confused.
The hologram fizzed for a moment, reforming into Tom's exasperated look, "Sir, I need to dock at the private hanger."
"Why in God's name would you need to do that? I hope you know my clearance isn't something to be tossed around willy nilly," Mikael continued, growing increasingly frustrated.
With a huff, Tom looked him right in the eyes and replied, "Sir, I need that clearance as soon as possible. This is a St. Louis situation sir."
Now that, that caused him to pause. It was a code word that he and only few others knew. There were only a few scenarios that afforded such severity. He knew Tom wouldn't exaggerate something of that nature, he was serious.
"My ship is out for maintenance, dock in hanger 10. I'll meet you there," Mikael concluded. With a nod, the projection shut off and he sighed.
Never a dull day in my life... he reflected.

FAMILY & ORIGINS
The El family & Krypton
Krypton was a decadent civilization located on a moon near a large gaseous planet in the orion belt. In the past they had visited earth and other planets expanding civilization, but their penchant for slavery, war, resource extraction and violence caused many of these projects to fail. Even in 10,500 BC the Kryptonians almost caused the terraforming of the earth, melting the poles and destroying Atlantis and other civilizations, causing among other things the end of the ice age.
Over the centuries the Kryptonians lost the fuel necessary to travel and ended up confined to their planet, dedicated to warfare, genetic engineering-creating clones whose organs they needed to extend their lives-to pleasure and to exploiting the subsoil of their planet.
Jor-El and Lara were a couple of scientists critical of the system and supporters of a kind of democracy and pacifism. They had a daughter, Kala-El in a natural way against all the rules of Krypton. Lara managed to manufacture a small ship capable of making a space jump to save her daughter from the end of Krypton. General Zod stole her design and managed to build a larger fleet of ships but Jor-El managed to sabotage them and send them to the phantom zone. Lara decided to send Kala to Earth because she felt that her culture was much kinder and more hopeful than Jor-El who preferred to send her to New Genesis, another inhabited planet far away.
Joe&Martha Kent, Kansas life
Joe and Martha Kent were a Quaker farming couple whose farm was struck by the pod carrying Kala-El in 1918. Although owners of substantial property they were a very humble, cooperative, austere, devout and civil rights-minded people. Martha Kent was a descendant of Kansas abolitionist guerrilla fighter John Brown. They both raised Clara very lovingly and unwilling to ask too many questions about the baby's origin. Clara was a very sickly child as her body did not adapt to the earth, she was affectionate and obedient and devoured books. The Kent family were avowed supporters of the New Deal and Joe Kent was one of the leaders of the local farmers union.
With puberty she developed very fast and her superpowers began to appear. Clara soon began to excel in swimming and ballet, but Joe forbade her to pursue a professional career to prevent her from taking advantage of her powers, and also forbade her to use her superpowers to help others, fearful of humanity's reaction and wary of savior messiahs in the era of interwar dictators. Clara rebelled against her father but eventually gave in. In 1936 Joe Kent died of a heart attack. Clara was unable to go to college after her father's death and worked as a teacher and nurse's aide in Smalville. Her engagement to Pete Ross, her teenage sweetheart failed in 1939 when she revealed her powers to Pete and he panicked, although he later promised to keep the secret.
Between 1939 and 1941 Clara lived in Canada and Alaska searching for the Fortress of Solitude but with the outbreak of World War II she decided to enlist as a nurse in the Pacific, refusing to use her powers except to help the wounded, fearing to cause more harm than good. After a leave of absence in 1944 she returned to Alaska where she found the Fortress of Solitude and its true origin.
After learning about the Holocaust first and the atomic bombs later, Clara decided to become Superwoman with the support of her mother Martha and emigrated to Metropolis, where in October 1945 she was hired by Louis Lane, who had just returned from Europe.
DAILY PLANET CHARACTERS
-Major Louis Lane, senior reporter in the Daily Planet, see below
-Perry Weiss, owner and editor in chief of the Daily Planet. Born in Oddessa in 1886. Jewish inmigrant from humble origins who became a skilled journalist and founded the Daily Planet as a tool of the Metropolis Republican Party to unseat the city bosses of the time. Still a staunch liberal, he supported Roosevelt in 1932 and 1936, is an ally of Mayor LaGuardia and won the Pulitzer Prize in the 1920s for defending the innocence of Sacco and Vanzetti. Friend and ally of Louis Lane's father. He is very demanding with his employees but is very fond of Clara. He admires and defends Superwoman despite Louis Lane's distrust. Best friend of Cat Grant.
-Cat Grant, Co-chair of Perry Weiss, Pulitzer winner, closeted lesbian and Ayn Rand Fan. Born 1901, she comes from a fine family of Metropolis Kineckerbockers. She is like Louis the least liberal element of the newspaper. To protect herself she married a very old friend of her father's who helped her lead a double life. For twenty years she lived with a painter named Margaret Ivy. Considered the best writer of the Daily Planet, in addition to being a journalist she has published two novels. Very elegant and popular in intellectual circles. She is tremendously authoritarian. She mistreats Clara a lot because she does not respect her authority and because of her different political ideas, but as Clara grows as a journalist and Cat Grant suspects that she is Superwoman, she will protect her and push her forward without Clara knowing it. Best friend of Perry Weiss.
-Assistant photographer Jimmy Olsen and best friend of Clara. He comes from a town in Massachusetts. He is 7 years younger than Clara. He is a party animal, friendly, generous and somewhat naive. Yet he is a skilled photographer who has been able to capture the worst of the night and day of Metropolis. Miraculously he always gets the best pictures of Superwoman (Clara helps him a little). Very democratic and complains about working for a newspaper that is too conservative for his taste. Adores Clara whom she treats as her big sister. It doesn't even cross her mind that she is Superwoman. Jimmy thinks that Louis is a snob and a bigot.
LOUIS LANE:
NAME: LOUIS LANE
BORN: 08/02/1912, METROPOLIS (NYC)
PROFESSION: SENIOR REPORTER
YEAR: 1948
PLACE: METROPOLIS (NYC)
-Rich family, born in 1912, first of 6 brothers
-Caustic, cynical, ironic but somewhat kind
-Commanding
-Lives in Park Avenue with a 6-year old daughter and his rich unfaithful wife. Very unhappy marriage
-Major rank during the war in the US army.
-Elegant, sportsman, plays violin.
-Teaches musics lessons in an orphan house in secret
-Not that snobbish nor Wasp, new rich family traits
-Classic music and literature lover
-Heavy drinker
-Does not enjoy journalism, thinking of quitting to politics or teaching literature
-Jewish father (Lane surname is a change from Lantzman), Irish catholic mother, raised catholic and religious, but not extremely orthodox
-His father is a self-made tycoon, started as democrat in the Tammany Hall switched to republican. Close ally of Mayor LaGuardia.
-Fought in the european theater during World War II. Conservative republican opposed to his father liberal republican views, loves McArthur.
-Has a good opinion of Lex Luthor, sees him as an innovator and freedom fighter.
-Perry Weiss favourite reporter.
-Very nice and paternalistic to Clara, pushes Clara's career forward despite Cat Grant's opposition. He is secretly in love with Clara. Although he rejects Superwoman and suspects she is the same person as Clara, he deludes himself and rejects these suspicions.
-Tired of New Deal Politics, anticommunist
-“a brilliant and kind man” for the majority of the Daily Planet staff, a “terrible asshole” for many others like Jimmy Olsen
-Strongly rejects Superwoman and other heroes
-Sometimes Clara really hates him.
-Famous line “Neither reds nor capes”
-He lives a bizarre love triangle with Clara Kent and Superwoman. Although he publicly rejects the superheroine he also desires her and he and Superwoman have had moments of passion, which Louis feels guilty about because he is married and because of his religion. On the other hand he is in love with Clara Kent as much as he rejects the figure of Superwoman, he deludes himself about the identity of both. A bit James Stewart in Vertigo, which destabilizes and infuriates Clara.
ENEMIES
Lex Luthor
Rocket engineer, CEO of TELCORP and Heir of Nikola Tesla. Brilliant scientist, defines himself as a "radical humanist", but in the early 30s supported closetely fascism to stop "imperialism" and "usury" and now secretly supports Stalin to defeat "predatory western capitalism". The world's greatest philanthropist. Loving father and husband. Hates Superwoman to death and believes she spells the end of humanity. Paranoid and ruthless but convinced that he does everything for the greater good.
General Zod & Faora
Political dissidents like the El on Krypton on the other hand believed that Krypton's only salvation lay in emigrating and invading, terraforming and exterminating other planets. They almost succeeded in a coup d'état but after their failure they and their henchmen tried to flee by space jumping their ships, Jor-El managed to sabotage the launch and send them to the phantom zone. Over the years they managed to escape and arrived on Earth in 1946, shortly after Clara showed herself to the world as Superwoman. They tried to exterminate all humanity but Superwoman and some American and Russian scientists managed to defeat them. Their invasion caused 5,000 human casualties but could have caused complete extermination. The experience was traumatic for Clara because she had to send Zod and Faora back to the phantom zone where they would surely die. Zod, Faora and their henchmen had not yet developed the full powers of a yellow sun like Earth's and so several of them were killed by human bombs and missiles. Their remains were stored by Russians and Americans. Superwoman managed to expel all Kryptonian technology and weaponry into space so that humans would not use it for warfare.
The Toyman
Former entrepreneur and inventor of the 1920s toy business who was ruined in the Great Depression by banks and various betrayals. After a crime spree he was imprisoned in 1933 but escaped from prison recently completely crazed and ready to take revenge on the whole city using his inventions.
Doomsday
A truly near-indestructible abomination mistakenly created by the U.S. military in Zone 51 using the remains of the Kryptonians defeated by Superwoman in the failed 1946 invasion and a strange alien technology found in Roswell that was hidden from Superwoman.
Brainiac "the eternal traveller"
An android, merging a famous astronaut and artificial intelligence, which was used by the first civilization of Krypton to collect information from other worlds. It is more than 100,000 years old. With the passage of time he revealed against the Kryptonians, became evil and phobic to any form of life that he considered imperfect or inferior. It caused the destruction of many cultures. He wanders through space visiting planets and analyzing life forms. He probably has no enthusiasm for humans, much less for a descendant of the House of El.

2023.03.20 22:00 EricD4M4n456 EarthBound/Mother 3 plot hole

How was Porky able to travel 10,000 years into the future using his Spider Mech as shown in the finale of EarthBound and yet Leder in Mother 3 says that he used the Phase Distorter? We can see the Phase Distorter on the Hallway of Memories in the Empire Porky Building, but wasn't it destroyed before he could use it after Giygas died? I'm confused

2023.03.20 21:59 NeurodivergentRatMan Hormonal Aggression, or poor mouth skills

I have a mischief of four boys.
2 older boys (6 months), and 2 younger boys (4 months).
One of my older boys has started showing some worrying behaviour.
I've tried a lot to help:
I'm exhausted, and I feel at this point I just have to accept that my poor baby is just an angsty rat teen, and has lost his ball privileges. So I have a neuter booked for Wednesday. But I feel awful and there's the nagging voice in my head saying he's just a sweet misunderstood baby who maybe just doesn't know how to use his mouth properly.
I guess I just want some advice/input on whether him having the snip is the right thing?
Thanks!
