2023.05.30 22:11 Mereszk How to deal with family problems as a stoic?

I'm a 18 years old guy, attending a university from september, so I will have to leave my hometown. I live in a middle class family, I have a brother who is one year younger than me, my parents are together, but the relationship between them and my brother worsens each day, because he is the most ungrateful child in the world and my parents do not know how to be strict.
I would like to explain the problems a little bit more:
  1. My brother has everything on the world, but it's still not enough for him. My grandmothers gave us a car (which only he uses), my parents give him money for clothings, fuel, even for cigarette, but it's not enough for him so he works in McDonalds on weekends. My mom cooks everyday but he rarely eats his (instead he buys some shit at McDonalds or KFC). His grades are bad in school, so my parents sent him to private teachers in mathematics and english, but he didn't show up at math classes, because he thought it's useless (he will stop going to the english classes soon, because his teacher said it's pointless if he doesn't put in any effort). You would assume that at least he is not an asshole, but on top of all that he talks in the most disrespectful manner with my parents. Even his friends aren't that bad guys, I know some of them. He always had his flaws, but didn't use to be this big trash of a person. He was kinder and had good hobbies, like working out. He got his driving license in March and the situation has been this bad ever since.
  2. My parents cannot handle him. I do not want to trashtalk on my parents, because then I would not differ from my brother, but I have to tell the truth to show a clear picture. My father is overweight, has a bad job but earns good money, he dropped out of school (which my brother uses as an excuse for his lack of academic skills), but he is a really kind person and worked really hard to bring up his children and I respect him for that very much (our family didn't use to live in wellfare, my father learned skills by his own, while working in 3 shifts). Unfortunatelly, my brother doesn't see any of this.
  3. Finally, my mother. She always thought that the best way of rearing a child is to give him/her love, because she had a lot of troubles in her family (alcoholic father, her mother died early). Because of that, she can't punish her children really (I never was). She also doesn't have the best job in the world. She wants to give us everything and my brother takes advantage of her. It is also terrible to see that they can't team up against him, because they are weak.
I also have my fair share. I was a troublesome kid, I have changed (I've been practicing stoicism for 2 years now), but I set a bad example. I think the situation has been like this for a year now. Deep inside, I feel like my inaction contributed very much to this miserable situation. I'm often viewed the smartest in the family, but I wasn't capable to teach anything to my younger brother. Today, my brother wanted to attack my father (only with bare hand), because they had an argument again (it happens much more nowadays).
Despite all that, I belive I can do something (stoicism teaches that we can only control actions). Before I make up my mind on anything, I would like to ask for advices from you, dear stoics:
How could I improve the my family's state? How can I use stoicism the most efficiently here? What would a stoic do?

2023.05.30 22:08 coolwali I platinummed Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time on VITA to get the secret ending.

Hello everyone. I recently platinummed the PSVITA version of Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time as my 28th platinum. It only took me 10 years, 4 weeks, 22 hours to do it. Did you know this game hides its true ending behind the platinum?
Anyway, I'd like to talk about the experience.
Sly 4 was a bit confusing and inconsistent to platinum. I get the feeling the game wants you to platinum it given how on every loading screen it shows you how much you've completed the trophies and collectibles for the game. And that there no missable trophies. But there are some decisions that don't help with that.
So I'd say there are around 3 groups of Trophies in this game.
The first group are the mandatory story trophies. Not much to say about these. There's nothing missable here and the names are quite cool. I do like looking at the percent completion to see how many players completed the PS VITA version of the game. Did you know that around 73% of players booted this game up and completed the prologue? And only around 25% of players even beat the game. The biggest drop happened around the start of Episode 2 since the completion dropped from around 60%to 48% for some reason.
The second group are the trophies for the collectibles and arcades. I'll talk about these later.
The third and final group of trophies are for miscellaneous challenges. I'll start with these first and highlight some of the notable ones that I missed on my first playthrough.
"Crazed Climber - Scale the dragon lair in under 90 seconds". This was one I missed during my original playthrough of the game. This requires you to climb a giant tower filled with traps in the mission "Mechanical Menace". And this one was really fun even though it took me like 3 attempts. Sly 4's movement and platforming is quite fun so having a mini speedrun challenge using Sir Galleth's moveset was a treat. The one criticism I have here is that the game drops a checkpoint as soon as you get to the top. If you haven't gotten the trophy by then and need to retry, you need to quit to the main menu/hideout and reselect the mission, skip through all the cutscenes and get back there which gets annoying. At least the tower is near the start of the mission.
"Ancient Warfare 3 - Crackshot 10 enemies within 65 seconds. Sly's ancestor, Tennessee "Kid" Cooper" has an ability similar to "Dead Eye" from Red Dead Redemption where he can slow down time, mark enemies and objects and then instantly shoot them dead called "Crackshot". I never got this trophy when I first played the game because there wasn't much opportunity to. There aren't large groups of enemies wandering around that you can casually get 10+ of them line up for you to shoot them. Plus, I was already good at shooting them normally. I tried running around in the open world trying to lure enemies but found it wasn't working. There's a mission in the game called "Blind Date" that throws lots of rabbit enemies that chuck TNT at you that worked better for me.
"Hubba Hubba - Don't miss a beat in the Carmelita dance game." This trophy is, without a doubt, the main reason to platinum this game on VITA instead of the PS3. So nobody can see you play this dumb minigame and call you a Furry. This trophy requires you to complete the minigame where Carmilita needs to disguise herself as a belly dancer and dance to distract guards while the Cooper gang try and open a door. You just need to hit the button prompts perfectly. So you can ignore the times the minigame asks you to shake the VITA from side to side like a champagne bottle to make Carmilita shake her ass (seriously, why does this game sexualize Carmilita so much? None of the past Sly games did it).
"Get To the Chopper - Don't take any damage during Up In Smoke." This one was actually fun. In the mission "Up in Smoke", you have to control an RC Helicopter and drop bombs on turrents while drones and mines chase you down. It was fun dodging and weaving through them. There are 3 phases to this mission and you have a checkpoint in between every phase. So if you mess up, you can just restart the checkpoint to the last phase. You don't need to avoid taking damage the whole way through which is nice.
"Unexpected Package - Place 60 bombs in enemy pockets with Bentley." When I first saw this trophy, I groaned. This would be a massive grind. And I had actually made it harder on myself. You see, normally, when you sneak up behind an enemy as Bentley and hold triangle, Bentley will try to put a bomb in the enemy's pocket. Larger enemies won't notice this but smaller enemies will. But the main issue is that I had previously unlocked the Heat Seeking upgrade for Bentley. Meaning sometimes, the bombs would "miss" and stick to an enemy guard's arms or legs instead. So it was annoying going around the hub world and planting bombs on guards.....until I remembered that I had purchased the upgrade for sleep bombs. My plan now was just to find a lone guard on a rooftop, try and place one sleep bomb into his back pocket and detonate it. He'd then fall asleep. Then I'd go to his sleeping body and try placing 5 sleeping bombs in his pocket and back away (the max you can place at any one time). When he wakes him, I'd detonate all 5 which set him to sleep and then repeat. Even if I'd "miss" a few bombs that would stick to their legs instead, I generally 3 or 4 bombs work perfectly. So it didn't take long to get all 60.
"Apollo Wins - Have the perfect workout during the Training Montage." During the mission "Getting Stronger", you have to do a training montage with Bob where you alternate through 6 minigames as you complete them with the minigames getting harder as you complete them. The trophy requires you to complete 10 randomly selected minigames without making a single mistake. If you mess up, you can restart the checkpoint to the beginning of the montage and have to play through a new set of 10 randomly selected minigames. The Minigames are "Slippery Slope" where you balance an egg on a beam using motion controls while penguins jump around on the floating iceberg you are standing on. "Penguin Popper" where Penguins are diving in front of you and you have to play baseball using them. "Sumo Slap" where you have to perform QTEs to push a giant penguin out of a Sumo Ring. "Duck and Cover" where penguins get launched at you from 4 different directions and you have to move the left stick to dodge them. "Super Sling" which requires you to use a catapult to launch a penguin at a flying pterodactyl. And "Whack a chump" which is Whack a Mole but with penguins. Some of which are fake and you should avoid.
Penguin Popper was easy. Once you get the timing down it's easy to get into a rhythm and hit the penguins since they don't vary when they dive. Whenever this popped into the rotation, I considered it a freebie. Sumo Slap was extremly easy. The button mashing was extremely generous. This was another freebie. Duck and Cover requires a bit more focus because of the timing and inconsistent patterns. It's not too challenging. Interestingly, I noticed that the VITA's speakers would reflect if the penguin was coming from the right or left but not above or below you. I guess headphones would make this easier but I had no need for it. I was generally glad when this popped up in the rotation. Whack a Chump was a bit harder than Penguin Popper because there is no set pattern and the additional challenge of not hitting the fake penguins. But it wasn't too bad. I was glad when this popped up in the rotation.
Super Sling and Slippery Slope were the 2 I dreaded and the ones I messed up the most on. Super Sling doesn't give you much indication of where your sling will go. The Pterodactyls have varied speeds so you can't rely on pattern recolonization and reactions. And there's time pressure as taking too long counts as a miss. And it kept popping up in the rotations for some reason!
Slippery Slope was stressful because of the motion controls and how wild later versions of it were.
"The Cooper Open - Have a 20 hit rally with Bentley in each hideout." There are 6 hideouts in the game. In each hideout there is a table tennis table where you as Sly can play a round of table tennis with Bentley. I question the inclusion of it but I suppose it can be a nice distraction. This trophy requires you get a sequences where both you and Bentley hit the ball back and forth 10 times each (or 20 times overall) without missing. And repeat for each of the 6 tables. I found Bentley kept messing up so I had to intentionally hold back and avoid making good shots and try and hit the ball towards him. The main issue is the fact you have to repeat it 6 times. I feel it would be better off just once and as nothing is really added by doing it 6 times. If anything, it's more annoying given the long load times to switch hideouts and Bentley's random AI.
"Hassan Would Be Proud - Pickpocket a full collection of every item in the game." Each of the 6 or so locations have around 3-4 items that can be pickpocketted from guards. The main issue with this trophy is that it doesn't keep track of which items you have already pickpocketed in any way. The game already tracks how many treasures and masks you've found per general area but not pickpocketted items.
I only got this trophy by planning on systematically going through every location in the game and pickpocketting every enemy item and noting down which ones I found.....only to get it in the first level when I used Murray's shake move on some rat enemies. Enemies that you never encounter or have a reason or opportunity to naturally pickpocket. I guess 2013 me had already gotten 99% of these items previously.
"Navigate Like Drake - Take a look at every map in every episode". I found this trophy really annoying. The way it works is that every location in the game, including linear interiors that are exclusive to missions and even the hideouts, have a map you can look at by pressing SELECT. The game doesn't keep track of which locations you've seen the map of. So I had to systamatically play the game from the first mission and press SELECT whenever I entered a new interior. Then quit out and play the next mission and repeat. It popped for me in Episode 4 so somehow, 2013 me had looked at all the maps in Episode 5 without realizing it.
I don't like this trophy. It doesn't really add anything. The player would already be looking at the maps in the hub worlds where they would be at their most useful since those are open world sections. They have no real reason to use the map in linear interiors. And even less useful in hideouts as these aren't even explorable. They are basically just menus that happen to have a 3D background. I'd be more forgiving of this trophy if the map showed collectibles at least. That way, players have more of a reason to use this feature.
Shout out to the Lazy Trunk Spa & Lounge. A secret area in the game that contains a mask collectible and counts for the trophy with a unique map. No mission ever goes here. So even if you were to play diligently and open the map for every area you encounter, you'd still miss this. I only knew this existed because the trophy guide I looked at told me about it so I decided to tag this area while doing the "Get to the Chopper" trophy.
"Hero Tech - Battle with a secret weapon" Once you collect 50 Sly masks. You unlock Ratchet's wrench from Ratchet and Clank. This weapon even turns the coins you collect into bolts. Collecting 60 Masks unlocks Cole's Amp from inFAMOUS. This can electrocute the enemies you hit. I chose to use Cole's Amp to get the trophy as a tribute to inFAMOUS. Killed by Ghost of Tsumia 😭. May it rest in peace. Gone too soon.
That covers all the miscellaneous trophies. Now for the collectibles and arcades.
Sly 4 has a bunch of different collectibles scattered in each of its 6 episodes.
Bottles: Each hub world contains 30 bottles. Collecting all of them gives you access to unlock a safe hidden somewhere in the hub world. Unlocking that safe rewards you a special treasure. Bottles make a "clinking" sound when you're near them so if you're having a hard time finding them, try going into the game's settings and turning down the music and voice sounds. If you find the safe in Episode 3, the special treasure it gives you will highlight bottles and safes in every other episode on your map which is quite nice. I wish the game did this more often. If it hides collectibles from the player, at least give the player an endgame ability to highlight them. It makes it more feasible and fun to complete these tasks instead of combing every last inch (or looking up a guide).
Treasures: Each hub world has around 11 treasures scattered all around. The gimmick here is that in order to collect them, you first need to find where they are in the hub world. Then once you pick them, you need to race back to your hideout under a certain time limit and without taking any damage. If you mess up, you need to repeat the process. The treasures generally require you to have all of Sly's costumes. And a couple require you to be playing as Sir Galleth because England has increased gravity for some reason. Some of these treasures are really well hidden. Requiring you to go to these holes in the middle of nowhere which then require you to switch between some of Sly's costumes. Like, if you open the map when picking some of these up, you'll find Sly is located beyond the borders of the area.
I found it way more fun to race back to the hideout than actually finding them. It was tedious to find many of them because of how well hidden they are. There is no tool or item in the game that can help mark them on your map. Well, I say that. Supposedly, if you have both the PS3 and VITA versions of the game and play them at the same time, you can use the VITA like a scannebinoculars to locate these treasures. And then use the Cross Save feature to nab them in both versions. I only have the VITA version so no luck for me. Again, I'd argue it would be better if there was an endgame upgrade or tool you could get that would mark the treasures like how the game does it for bottles. There isn't even a "clinking sound" or any help for these.
Anyway, collecting all the treasures for an episode unlocks the arcade machine minigame for that episode.
Also sidenote, but this game has the worst map screen that still somehow can be useful. The map gives a top down view of the area but with a blue filter. This makes it harder and more annoying to navigate and use landmarks for reference. Especially on the VITA with its smaller screen. There are also no icons on the map (aside from bottles, safes and objectives) or the ability to make your own markers. The VITA version makes it worse as you can't even use the buttons to navigate the map. You have to use the touchscreen even though that's not how it is in the PS3 version. But you can still use it to know where you are and where collectibles can be from guides. It's technically readable and useful but just barely. I've never seen a map in a game so perfectly walk the line between useful and annoying.
The next collectible are Sly Masks. There are 60 total and around 11 per Episode. Collecting them unlocks skins and some goodies. But the catch with them is that they can be anywhere. There can be a couple in the hub world. But also couple during select missions and even some in the arcade minigames. There's no way to know where any of them are. They generally tend to be really well hidden even if you are trying to scour every area.
Again, I wish there was a way to highlight them. The game's long load times make it a chore to switch episodes or missions so it's tedious to try searching for them manually.
Now it's time to talk about the arcades. Sly 4 has 3 arcade minigames that are used in both the main missions and have a harder version in the arcades in hideouts. The arcade versions of these minigames are harder, go on for much longer and can have secret paths that lead to portals that reward you with points and some of them even have Sly masks. You need to beat the high scores to get the trophies
The first minigame is "Alter Ego". This has you play this 2D auto scrolling twin stick shooter minigame where you must avoid enemies and collect these "ionic bits". Collecting 5 yellow bits levels you up so your weapons get more powerful. At level 10 you have shoot crazy fast, can launch missiles and have floating drones that can damage enemies around you. But whenever you take damage, you drop an entire level. And you get left behind as the level autoscrolls, you respawn at level 0. You can also collect blue bits which can give you a grenade explosion around you.
Personally, I don't really like this minigame. It's fine when playing casually as a change of pace but grinding the high score isn't great. Since it is an autoscroller it is entirely possible you don't have enough points to match the high score and you won't know until its too late, wasting your time. I also found the hitboxes a bit too small. Making items more annoying to pickup.
The key to success is finding the right balance between collecting yellow bits as they give points and level you up (and how high your level is acts as a multiplier for your score) and killing enemies since they give more points. As well as avoiding taking damage and maintaining level 10 as much as possible and knowing where the secret paths are so you can get more points as well as level up if you have messed up.
The second minigame is "System Cracker". Here, you guide a little space ship looking thing through 2D levels in top down twin stick shooting sections. This isn't an autoscroller. You need to explore levels looking for keys and shooting enemies. There are 3 ships you can switch between by going onto specific coloured pads and each ship has its pros and cons. The green ship you start with does decent damage and has decent health and can carry keys. So it's a jack of all trades master of none kinda ship. The pink ship literally resembles a tank. It fires slower and at a shorter range but does more damage and has more health. It's also necessary for destroying pink crystals to progress. The blue ship has floatier handling and faster speeds. Its shots also bounce off walls and it can draw a line which can activate switches and damage enemies. It is weaker than the green ship though.
I actually really enjoyed this minigame and was happy whenever it comes up. It even feels the most fleshed out of the 3. Like, I feel it could even be released as a small standalone game with some tweaking and expansion. I'd probably play a mobile version of this in my free time.
I like how varied the levels can be. You can have a lot of different threats and mini-puzzles and even scenarios where you have to keep switching between ships on the fly to damage enemies. Like, there's this one enemy that's made up of orange, blue and pink hexagons that require you to switch between all 3 ships and use their abilities to damage it. It's quite fun. Damage one ship takes is "saved" on that ship. So if you take 50% damage with the green ship and switch to the pink one, the pink one will have 100% health. But whenever you switch back to the green one, you will be back at 50% health. So mistakes have consequences requiring you to make decisions accounting for them without being too overbearing.
Beating the high scores for the associated arcades is very easy. For one, there is no time limit or pressure so you’re free to take your time and play carefully. On top of that, the mode is very generous with points. Whereas Alter Ego only gives you points for killing enemies and picking up bits (and you need to get and maintain a multiplier for decent times), System Cracker gives you points even for shooting obstacles and barricades in your way. In Alter Ego, I was scraping for points until the very end. In System Cracker, I had more than enough points by the halfway mark.
I suppose the game could have balanced this by increasing the points threshold and rewarding extra points for taking less time to complete sections but I’m not complaining.
The third and worst minigame is “Spark Chaser”. Here you must guide a little electric ball across these maze like areas with gaps that end your attempt if you fall down them and these pinball like bounce pads that bounce you really far. There’s also a time pressure. You have around 20 seconds to get as far as possible with more time added as you pick up these purple clock icons.
The biggest issue is that it’s entirely controlled by motion controls. And this makes me experience worse on VITA. Seriously, I very nearly quit playing. This post was almost titled “I gave up trying to Platinum Sly 4”.
With the PS3 version, at least titling the remote doesn’t also affect your view of the screen. You can look at the game and play it the same as you normally would. But in the VITA version, the “neutral” position where no input is registered by the system is placing the VITA flat with its screen facing up. The standard “screen facing you” position registers as down.
The end result is a frustrating experience. This minigame requires really fine precision given how easy it is to fall off and the time pressure requires you both be fast and more precise to collect time pickups. On top of that, your view is constantly being messed with due to how much you need to tilt the system from odd angles. Especially how tilting “up” really makes it hard to see. Oh, and the dialogue from Bentley as you bounce gets really annoying and repetitive.
It’s barely tolerable in regular missions since those don’t require as much precision or speed. And even then, the usage there in 2013 was suspect to begin with. I only completed this because there’s a cheese where if you can get enough time early on, you can then keep bouncing on certain pads which give around 20 points per bounce. When I played “normally”, I’d get around 300 points with the high score being 1000 points. Using the cheese, I averaged around 990 points and managed to get lucky to win with 1010 points.
Tangent Time:
I’ve said it before. Motion controls work best when they complement existing controls in an optional way or in more restrained ways. I love it when games have gyro aiming since that can help compensate when aiming with sticks with small fine corrections. It works here because the sticks do most of the work and the gyro sensors work where they are best suited.
Or in many mobile racing games, steering is often done by tilting your phone. I enjoy this because there is only one axis you need to tilt your phone, the screen often rotates in conjunction so your view is preserved and it’s more intuitive to feel the “range” of rotation and how it corresponds to steering.
Hell, even ignoring these approaches, motion can still be used in worthwhile ways. Such as by mapping an extra action that is infrequent if all other buttons are occupied. The Mario games on Wii map a “spin” when you jump and shake the remotes giving Mario a bit of grace allowing him to make slightly further jumps or correct a bad jump. Call of Duty MW1 on Wii allowed you to assign certain commands to custom motions of the controller and nunchuck. So you could map stuff like jumping, moving and shooting to buttons but map reloading to smacking the nunchuck to the Wii Mote or plunge the Wii Mote forward to do a melee attack or tilting the Wii Mote to bring out a grenade or alt fire.
Even Resistance 1: Fall of Man had a neat idea. You could quickly tilt the controller left to bring up the Scoreboard screen without needing to take your thumbs off the sticks or stop moving. The Soulsbourne games allow you to quickly do emotes without needing a menu by holding the interact button and quickly tilting the controller in certain directions.
I bring all this up to highlight how Sly 4’s use of motion controls are a failure on every level. They’re mostly used in place of minigames as the sole method of control. So all the issues of motion controls (such as the lack of broad control and feedback) are front and centre. The only place where the motion controls are understandable is when firing arrows as you can then control the arrow after it’s fired using both the sticks and gyro aiming. But even then, the lack of any ability to tune the gyro sensitivity or even invert the controls hampers any use it could have had.
I don’t mind the idea of Sly 4 having decent motion controls. There are places where I can see it being beneficial. In addition to shooting and guiding arrows, I can see it being useful when you have to use the binoculars. Especially as Bentley as you need to shoot darts precisely.
Or, here’s a gimmicky one: you can bind certain costumes or tools to also be selected by quickly tilting the system. Even though using the D-pad for a quick select would be faster, it would still be a better use of motion controls for Sly 4 than most of what’s currently there.
End Tangent.
Back to getting all the trophies, the final arcade machine, unlocked only when you’ve gotten all the treasures in every other episode, is very easy. It has “3 rooms”, one featuring every minigame thus far. But the high score requirements are really low and rooms aren’t as tough as prior versions. You can easily get the high score in the first area which is the Alter Ego one. Even if you miss it there, the second area is Spark Runner but you can keep reloading the checkpoint to preserve your score. So you can get some time clocks, reload a checkpoint when you’re close to running out of time or about to fall off and repeat until you get the high score.
You do need to get past the Spark Runner section to the 3rd and final section that uses System Cracker's gameplay in order to get a hidden Sly Mask, but it's far easier than the dedicated Spark Runner arcade minigame as the section is shorter, is more generous with Time Pickups, has easier level design and lets you reload a checkpoint if you're about to fail which doesn't end the run.
So yeah, Sly 4 Thieves in Time was....inconsistent game to platinum. I enjoyed the base gameplay, System Cracker, the various challenge trophies and the mini speedruns for collecting treasures. I didn't enjoy finding the collectibles and doing some of the other minigames. I hated Spark Runner.
If the game had more ways of tracking collectibles, fewer minigames and better load times, I'd gladly recommend it as a fun game to platinum.
As for the base game itself, I am mixed on it. The gameplay is arguably the best in the series. Sly's movement and costumes are so fun to play around with. Murray, Bentely and Sly's ancestors are also fun changes of pace during missions.
The story is lacking. My main issue is that it doesn't feel like it realizes its following up Sly 3. The story so casually undoes the ending of Sly 3 to get Sly 4's story going. I get it, that's what a sequel has to do. But the way it does it really undermines Sly 3. It's also much more lighthearted and doesn't have as much of a theme or focal point as its predecessors. Sly 1-3 explored the theme of legacy and the consequences of adhering to it so tightly. A major aspect of Sly 3 was Sly realizing the Cooper Vault wasn't worth dying for. It's what prompts him to fake his amnesia and retire with Carmilita in the end. So for Sly 4 to then have Sly have an itch to steal just for the fun of it, it's sending mixed messages here.
In addition, Sly is really casual about the fact Carmilita now knows about his betrayal and has broken up with him. Seems like that should have been a bigger deal. In fact, that kind of "casual-ness" persists throughout the story. Sly doesn't really have much of an arc or any real heartfelt moments with his ancestors. Nor do they seem to really care their decedent from the future is here with them.
If I could have tweaked the story to address these points, here's what I would have done:
I'd have the story open with Sly, Bentley and Murray enjoying their "retirement" and have no plans of thieving. I'd go so far as to have Sly even scoff at the idea of him ever wanting to be a thief. Then when the pages of the Thievus Racconus are dissapearing, Sly, Bentley and Murray have to reluctantly unretire to try stopping them. There would be dialogue during the opening mission of Sly being worried if they get caught as it would undo their happy ending. And then when Carmilita catches Sly, Sly at first is flustered and tries to explain the situation to Carmilita who isn't having any of Sly's BS. Sly is forcibly extracted by the gang and then they time travel. As they are time travelling. Sly is upset that, in order to go literally defend the Cooper Legacy, he has to give up his happy relationship and can't be repaired now. That even if they fix the problem, they'll be on the run forever now. Murray had to give up his professional career as well.
Already, I feel this introduction has a few things going for it. It respects the ending of Sly 3 and keeps the characters in more character, as well as putting more heat on Le Paradox. Sly 4 had to rip away the happy ending that was Sly 3. The characters know that and aren't happy about it. There is immediate consequences. And that heat can be directed at Le Paradox when he comes later.
I'd also like if all of the ancestors Sly met had different reactions to both him and the Cooper legacy and how it affects Sly's arc.
For example, lets say when he meets Riochi Cooper, Ricohi is initially disappointed in Sly as the future Cooper decendent as Sly doesn't act honourably or respect the legacy or something like this. Something that makes Sly start to question if it's even worth defending the Cooper Legacy. Bentely is the voice of reason here and mediator that gets the gang to work as well as they can.
Then when Sly meets Tennessee Cooper, Sly is initially expecting another traditionalist ancestor that cares a lot about the Cooper Legacy. But Tennessee is kinda the opposite of Riochi in that Tennasee doesn't care about the legacy in the same way. He adds his own spin and contributions but also uses the knowledge from it to do his own thing. Perhaps Tennessee is this Robin-Hood esque figure who uses his heisting skills to steal from the corrupt ruling class and give to the lower class. The point being that through Tennessee, Sly considers another aspect of the Cooper Legacy on how he's not that beholden to it and can potentially make it his own.
Then when Sly meets Bob, part of Bob's training is also from Sly as Sly teaches him some of the Cooper moves he knows. Since Bob is the first Cooper ancestor, he has no bias towards the legacy or any knowledge. So he's far more grateful and begins to use his new skills in helpful ways. Causing Sly to wonder if he could use the Cooper Legacy in more ways.
It's a similar situation for Sir Galleth. And for Selim, perhaps by that point, Sly has a newfound outlook and appreciation for the Cooper Legacy and ways on how he can improve it or make it his own that he encourages Selim not to retire or to retire in such a way where he could help people or something like that.
So yeah, there's this theme now of "Don't let the past define you now. You can make it your own and grow past its flaws". Which I feel would give Sly 4 more of a punch. I am basically copying Metal Gear Solid 4 and Assassin's Creed though.
I also feel it would be better if Penelope wasn't the villain of episode 4. It seems to contradict her character from past games and the explanation given for her heel turn doesn't really hold water. I feel the story would be better if Penelope had the role Dmitri has where she's their help in the present and the Knight was a new character. But if you need to have Penelope as the antagonist, have her be under mind control or something. That way the team has the conflict of how will they stop the plan without hurting their friend. But if you really insist on Penelope being a full on antagonist now by her own choice, perhaps flesh out her motivations more? Maybe something like "she sees how Bentley will never reach his full potential as the Bill Gates of the world because of his criminal past that requires him to lay low and not take public credit for his inventions. So she's trying to erase the Coopers so Bentley will have never met Sly". That would at least be more than "I want money".
Everything else, I feel works more or less.
I will note that the cliffhanger ending was a weird choice given that this game wasn't projected to sell well and kinda pigenholes any story Sly 5 would be going for. Plus, it being locked behind the platinum trophy means only a small portion of the few players that played Sly 4 would even know about it.
So yeah, that's my take on platinumming Sly 4: Thieves in Time. What do y'all think?
Next up for me is platinumming every Spider-Man game on PS VITA. See you then.

2023.05.30 22:07 Encore41 10 positive reminders for players to remember going into SF6

With SF6 dropping in a few days I found it would be beneficial for some positive points to remember going into launch. Whether you're a veteran, newcomer, casual or contender, having a healthy mindset going into any activity can make the difference between needlessly beating yourself up or having the time of your life

It's as simple as that: these games are tough.
You may play the "easiest" or the most execution-heavy character but the fact of the matter is the fighting games we play and love carry a significant learning curve. Learning how to reliably throw that Shoryuken or remember the hundred bits of frame data each character carries from season to season will take time, as well it should! Take pride in the fact you're doing something few people will ever be able to do, and enjoy the learning process of improving. Sooner than later you'll look back and scoff at the fact you had trouble executing SPD's with Zangief when you can mix-up Platinums into the corner with ease.

With most things in life, your greatest opponent will be yourself. In video games it's too easy to hop right back into a match and buzz through another set after taking a loss, however you may be playing against yourself. Don't jump right back into a set for revenge when a glaring issue like jumping in recklessly or relying on projectiles is costing you matches. Take a moment, breathe, and think how you can do better next time. This is how we grow.
Just like GI Joe says, "Knowing if half the battle"

Let's get this out of the way: you're going to lose. Like, a lot
The good news is that's ok! Embrace your loses. There are going to be times you get beat with only a sliver of health from your opponent, to them taking you to the cleaners in a double perfect. You can even play well and still lose. However the real failure is not taking something from your loss. If you were cooking and burnt the food, you typically don't blame the cook ware or the appliances. You messed up, acknowledge that fact and move on.
Let loss be your your mentor, true failure is failing to learn from experience

We all know Ken, throwing DP's like his life depends on it at all times. Many say they're all from Brazil too...
It's too easy to let our imaginations and our emotions take control of the games we play, as well as attaching labels and stereotypes to certain characters. As hard as it may be to admit that not all Ken players have a Shoryuken ready to go at all times, there's someone playing behind that character. When you keep this in mind it helps calm your mind enough to where you can actively keep yourself from falling for those traps.
... But surely Ken wouldn't DP after this knockdown, right?

This is going to be tough right at launch since it'll be like the running of the bulls with players blitzing the servers. People are going to want to race for the highest rank, explore the world, or simply lab out new stuff in practice mode for long stretches of time.
Remember to sleep. Remember to eat. Remember to shower. Get outside for some sun and touch some grass. No one plays better during a marathon session. Your body will thank you down the road, which leads right into how...

Weird, right? The point is that while you're playing your eyes are fixated on the screen, your hands/fingers are jumping around your controller, even other muscles in your body are keeping you stabilized during matches. However the two big ones are to remember to hydrate (with water, not Gatorade unless you're running between sets) as well as use the bathroom when you need to.
If you're full of shit, your play will reflect that fact

This is an important one for both casual and competitive players. Casuals will likely do this when finding a character to play and latch onto, however those looking to grind ranked may already have someone picked out. It's important to get a feel for everyone as it will give you a 1st person perspective of what that character does and how they flow, an invaluable piece of insight for when you come across them in a future match. To quote Sun-Tzu:
"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle"

We will start seeing tier lists of the roster within hours of people getting their hands on the full release Friday. I will tell you as someone who saw this trend through SFV that it barely factors in 99% of the players. These lists are assuming you are playing the characters at maximum efficiency and optimization. I hate to break the news to you but we're likely not gonna be top 8 at EVO, so choose the character that feels right to you and you feel is the most fun (that's my protocol for all fighting games)
And if you do make it to top 8, I always believed in from the start <3

We all have a reason we're grabbing this game and I can't wait to see what everyone does in this exciting new chapter of Street Fighter. We're all setting out on the same road despite the different routes and speeds that we take which is something I feel is unique to the FGC. Moments will be had, highlights will be shared, memes will be rampant. Eventually the sun will set on this installment and we'll all be looking towards the horizon for the next one.
Enjoy the ride while it lasts, because it leads to my last point:

This is a video game, keyword on game. If you treat yourself like a racehorse you'll beat yourself like one. If you treat it like a game, you may find you'll have some fun.

What are some other things players can keep in mind as we approach launch day?

2023.05.30 22:04 1Card_x I'm 14 years old and Looking for Feedback on my Workout Routine

I'd appreciate some feedback on my current workout routine. Here's what I've been doing:
Four times a week, I complete a set of 25 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, and 100 squats. This combination helps me engage multiple muscle groups and work on overall strength and conditioning.
On my rest day, I stay active by dedicating 25 minutes to swimming. It's a refreshing and low-impact exercise that improves my cardiovascular health and endurance.
As for My diet, I trust my mother's cooking and eat whatever she prepares.
Now, I would love to hear your thoughts. Is there anything I should consider improving or adding to my current routine, considering my age? My primary goal is to achieve a decent body. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2023.05.30 21:39 GoatDumpling AITA for not sharing my food while on a budget and meal prepping?

I live with family and recently I wanted to start eating healthier and exercising because my weight has reached unhealthy levels. I’m also a student and work part-time so I have to budget really well.
Sometimes I’m not able to afford other necessities and things I’d want but don’t need so adding groceries to that really makes my budget tighter. I’m starting to meal prep so I made a grocery list of healthy foods that is only enough for one person to last through the week. I cannot afford any other food outside of this list either.
Well as I was cooking and setting the foods In the containers for meal prep my grandma comes from the living room and ask if she could have a plate, then my mom comes in and ask for one also and said if my brother is hungry he can have some as well.
I had to kindly tell them no because it’s for my meal prep, healthy food that they usually don’t even eat, and that it’s what I’m living off for the rest of the week. Then my mom starts calling me greedy and says since I only cook for myself I can also start paying for my own phone bill too as she pays for my brother and I’s
Now I’m not only feeling guilty but if she goes through with her threat that’s also something I can barely afford.

2023.05.30 21:35 TheHermitOfCarcosa Met Wife's BoyFriend; Felt Like a Guest in My Home

This weekend I met my wife’s new boyfriend. I have a lot of feelings about it, and although my wife listened to me, she literally said “I don’t know how to respond to your concerns” and that ended the conversation.
To set the stage: This was not our first time meeting the other’s partners. I have met a (now) ex-boyfriend of hers and she met my current girlfriend. In both of those cases, we went out to lunch in public and had a friendly “getting to know you” conversation, did a second activity and then parted ways. There was no touching between anyone during the initial meetings, it was just a friendly hinge chat to introduce metas.
This weekend, my wife had invited her boyfriend over for breakfast and didn’t prep for it at all. She was in bed minutes before he arrived and sent me to the store to buy everything we needed. I said we should go out at that point, but she said she wanted to cook. When I got home, he was already in my house with my wife in the master bathroom while she was getting ready. This made me tense because we had never had other people in our bedroom before, and my wife had previously marked it as her hard boundary.
I was nervous about meeting this guy because we had a 3-way phone call a month ago, and I wasn’t digging his personality. Now I was on edge because of the groceries, because she wasn’t ready, and because he was “in my space.”
The guy comes out of my bedroom and he’s wearing a full suit and tie while I’m in T-shirt and jeans. I perceive this as an odd choice and a power imbalance. My wife later told me he always wears suits, but that literally is not true because after breakfast he changed clothes to go on a date with her and ended up in a t-shirt and jeans.
We sit down at the table and my wife starts cooking. Already this is uncomfy to me because the “hinge” is missing from our conversation. Previously we sat down at a table together, but my wife was effectively uninvolved in me meeting him for the first time, just occasionally chiming in while cooking. And we didn’t really vibe. We’d ask each other a question or two and then it would peter out until a new topic came up.
When the conversation died down, the boyfriend just spews sexual comments. Saying that he wants to bend her over the kitchen table right now, that she should stop cooking and suck our dicks, asking if we want to jump into a threesome right now. etc.
When we previously spoke on the phone this is part of what made me uncomfy because the conversation was going well until he hyperfixated on sex and any other conversation broke down. I had previously conveyed this to my wife after the call, but I am ashamed to say I didn’t stand up for myself. I have difficulties saying what I want to in the moment. I was also trying to give him the benefit of the doubt and I didn’t want to be too aggressive when meeting him the first time.
My wife sits down with plates of food and the guy asks if he can sit next to her. We have a square table with a chair on each side. He picked up his chair and sat on the same side of the table as her. Which was super weird to me and made me uncomfortable. My wife later insisted he always does this. My beef is that it felt like he didn’t view this as an opportunity to meet me, he viewed it as a date with my wife and also I was there.
After the plates were put away I went to the bathroom and came back to them making out in the kitchen. This was my first time visually seeing my wife with another person and I was fine with it. But then, as I started doing the dishes, he pushed her down on the couch and fully got on top of her making out and groping her. My wife said no and pushed him off, so he went to the bathroom.
At this point, I talked to my wife and said that her boyfriend was making me extremely uncomfortable in my own home and that I wanted him to tone it down. He walked up behind me, having gone in the hall but not actually gone to the bathroom, and said, “don’t mind me, I’m not eavesdropping.”
I asked my wife to meet me in private to express my frustration. She said that this is just how he is. I said we didn’t talk about boundaries for this meeting, that I assumed it would be like the other two meetings we’ve had (second paragraph), and that many of the things he’s done had crossed lines for me and made me feel uncomfortable in my house.
She says to give her a minute and she'll take care of it. I return to the kitchen and he’s changing clothes. He brought all his clean laundry in a suitcase and was cycling through outfits, asking my wife what she thought of each. I later told my wife that was extremely weird to me, especially since she went out there with the intent to tell him to tone it down. She said the alternative was that she and he go into the bathroom while he changes.
Fast forward, they leave to go on their date. I stay busy the rest of the day and can’t get a hold of my wife from noon to midnight. I go to bed, having asked her to check in 3 times. Called her, and no response. At 4 am she woke me up to ask if he could spend the night because they had been out until 3:30 am and it was an hour drive back to his house.
I said no because we had planned a full day just us for the next day. My wife went out to talk to him, then came back and said he was too tired to drive and asked me to reconsider. I’m barely awake, so I begrudgingly say fine. My wife promises not to stay out so late again and we go to bed. Boyfriend sleeps in the guest room.
My wife and I had planned to go to breakfast but had to put a pause on that because the boyfriend hadn’t woken up by 10am. I say we can get drive thru breakfast and my wife sends me out alone because she doesn’t want him to wake up in the house by himself. She tells me he’ll be gone by the time I get back.
At 10:45 I get home and he's still there. My wife comes down and makes him coffee because we didn’t get him anything… because he was supposed to be gone already. I told my wife point blank I wanted him to leave because this was our day together and we had already had to change plans because of him. She said that would be rude and that we still had the whole rest of the day just us. He ended up staying until noon. He didn’t say a word to me as he sat at the table drinking coffee and htne fist-bumped me goodbye.
When he finally left, my wife asked how I thought it went. I expressed everything I described here. Told her his personality made me uncomfortable, he ignored me, made me feel like a guest in my house, I didn’t appreciate him spending the night, etc etc etc.
My wife said, “Thank you for being honest. I don’t know how to respond to your concerns. It’s important to me that you like him. I need to think about this.” And shut the conversation down for now so we could focus on our planned day.
I don’t know how to handle all this. I do not like this man.

2023.05.30 21:28 rickmatt Question: Is my crockpot running hot?

My crockpot is between 10 and 15 years old. We always use it on the low setting because that tends to keep anything we cook simmering. I looked in on some chicken breasts with salsa that we are cooking right now and it's at what I would consider a hard boil.
How can I tell if my crockpot is cooking too hot?

2023.05.30 21:15 Shrek_2_Soundtrack France/Italy GF Trip Summary

Hey everyone!
This sub was a great resource for preparing for my big Euro trip, so I wanted to drop this post as a round up for great gluten free places I visited!
PARIS
Patisseries:
Copains - fully GF bakery, amazing selection here and super friendly staff, everything I had here was delicious (and I tried way too much)
NoGlu - while my least favorite of the bakeries, NoGlu offers lunch as well, so getting a traditional ham and emmental sandwich on their baguette was a great treat. As far as their straight up baked goods though, they were noticeably GF as compared to others in town
Le Pont Traverse - this little coffee shop is operated by NoGlu and serves baked goods from their bakery. It was super close to my hotel, so we started pretty much every day here. The smoked salmon bagel was especially good
Chambelland - while it was a close race with Copains, this was my favorite of the bakeries. I legitimately couldn't tell their eclair was gluten free
Dinners:
Brasserie Les Deux Palais - this is probably the only really "tourist trap" place we went, but we were hoping to walk along the Seine around sunset one night, and this brasserie by Sainte Chapelle was just the right location. It's definitely overpriced, but if you're looking for the traditional tourist brasserie experience while gluten free, this is a reliable stop
Le P'Tit Troquet - traditional French cooking, small restaurant with an even smaller menu, but gf adjustments available for most menu items and friendly about making the changes needed
Le Saotico - this little bistro was packed with locals when we arrived, which is always a good sign. The owners are a couple and the wife has Celiac, so she is quick to assure you that you are in good hands. They make some amazing duck and had great GF dessert options
Boutary - shout out u/MagneticPerry for this recommendation because this was THE BEST MEAL of our whole trip. A caviar-centric tasting menu, tailored around my GF request, with some of the most delightful waitstaff I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. A true 10 out of 10 experience
NICE
Taverne Messena - this place was a godsend when we arrived to Nice at 11pm one night. They stay open until 1 am and have a special menu labelled with allergens
Pop-O-Thyme - we ate lunch twice at this little crepe spot, traditional GF buckwheat crepes can be made with almost any of their fillings, and the GF crepes are made in a separate area than the others
La Rotonde - this is the mid-budget option for dining at the historic Le Negresco resort in Nice, with the Prix Fixe menu coming in around 65 euros a person. Your GF options are a little limited on the prix fixe menu, but everything I had was delicious, and they brought out warm GF rolls that were amazing. Dinner here also gets you access to the historic hotel, which is normally reserved for guests, so make sure to check out the incredible bar as well
GiGi Tavola - Someone told us the GF pizza at GiGi Tavola rivaled any GF pizza in Italy, which I was very skeptical of, but after having spent a week in Italy I have to agree. This is the best GF crust I have ever had. Make sure to make a reservation here, and if you're a craft cocktail person, ask about the speakeasy when you pay the check
At this point in my trip, we crossed over into Italy, and here I am happy to confirm everything you've heard about being gluten free in Italy is 100% true. People are super friendly and super knowledgable, almost every restaurant has their allergen info handy, and the AIC (Italian Celiac Association) awards a seal of approval to restaurants that can the facilities and know-how to assure food safety for people with Celiac.
GENOA
I Tre Merli - we had a stopover night in Genoa and wanted some seafood. I Tre Merli is AIC certified and sits out on the port, so we figured it was a good pick. All the seafood was fresh and delicious, and they offer several gluten free pasta options to accompany any of their sauces. I had some incredible GF seafood gnocchi here
McDonalds - yep, I tried the Italian GF burger. It is exactly what you expect: a frozen double cheeseburger that's been microwaved to order and served to you still sealed in plastic. But it's safe, convenient, and a Scharr bun is gonna be delicious no matter what. It makes me so mad no one in the States can offer something that is this simultaneously convenient and safe.
FLORENCE
Hostaria Il Desco - another AIC certified spot, this one offering more upscale pastas. We got truffle bruschetta on GF bread and chinghiale pasta (wild boar, a local delicacy). This place was a healthy mix of locals and tourists, which for Florence is saying a lot, as it was flooded with American college kids the whole time we were there
Sgrano - a very popular lunch spot in Florence serves giant sandwiches prepared inside an entire loaf of focaccia, and Sgrano is directly across the street offering a GF version. These sandwiches are gigantic and filled with incredible Italian meats and cheeses. I highly recommend you split a sandwich, I had one to myself at lunch and couldn't eat for the rest of the day
Cafe Del Teatro Niccolini - this cafe offers several different gluten free croissants, store and prepared separately in the back, and is a convenient grab-and-go espresso and a pastry spot
Grom - no matter where you go in Italy you'll probably find Grom gelato. They started as a dedicated GF gelateria and got big enough to be bought out by Unilever, so they are all over the place now. While many gelaterias in Italy are knowledgable enough to be very safe about scooping your GF order, it's nice to have dedicated GF flavors and cones at places like Grom
ROME
Taliani Pastries Cafe - I had read this place wasn't fully GF before going, so I was expecting a limited GF selection, but they actually have much more GF options than non-GF. The pastries were huge and delicious and reasonably priced, the staff even threw in some little tarts for free since they were close to closing.
Pizza in Trevi - at just a few steps away from the Trevi fountain, this place is filled with tourists, but it's AIC certified and has a unique buckwheat GF pizza crust that gives it a great flavor. Despite the crowds rushing in and out, they give gluten free diners a separate placemat and bring all the gf food out on separate dishes to insure safety
Mercato Hostaria - after sitting down here and opening the menu I realized this must be the more upscale sister restaurant to Pizza in Trevi, although the surroundings here are completely different. Instead of the cramped crowds of Trevi, this restaurants sits out on a quiet piazza, but they follow the same AIC safety protocols. All their pasta sauces can be served on fresh in-house GF pasta, and everything we had here was delicious
Mama Eat Lab - there are several Mama Eat locations around Rome offering GF comfort foods (think a lot of breaded and deep-fried options), but Mama Eat Lab in Vatican City is a smaller, dedicated GF location. The pizza here was probably the least impressive of my trip, but the pasta is delicious, and they make these like breaded, deep-fried mashed potato logs that are incredible
I hope some of this was helpful for any of you planning travel, and for anyone out there with travel-anxiety due to our dietary needs, I just want to assure you that France and especially Italy are excellent places to be! I felt more safe there than many of the places I travel in the US.

2023.05.30 21:08 llIlIIllIlllIIIlIIll Are All-Clad/Le Creuset cooking utensils worth it (probably not)?

So... I have a lot of all clad cookware and I swear by it. I can't, however, justify the price of their cooking utensils.
I want to buy some indestructable stainless steel cooking utensils (spatulas and whatnot), and I would imagine that any stainless steel spatula would be essentially the same thing as an all clad one for half the price.
Are you just paying for the brand name with them, or can the cost be justified in any way? I don't mind spending the money on them IF they're worth it, but I would think they're not.
Thoughts?

2023.05.30 21:04 Temp3ror Compilation of prompt engineering basic rules

Compilation of prompt engineering basic rules
I've compiled an extensive list of tips and tricks about basic prompt engineering. Hope it helps someone getting started.
Prompt Engineering - Part I
What Are Prompts in AI?
A key part of using conversational artificial intelligent agents is giving it prompts. They are a piece of text that is fed into the agent (AI) and used by the model to make a response. In other words, the process of making text in the AI starts with prompts.
The model uses the information in the prompt to figure out what’s going on and come up with a response that fits.
Depending on the user’s goal, a prompt could be a question, a statement, a short story, a task, or a topic. They can be as easy as one word or as hard as an entire essay. A good prompt should be specific, clear, and give enough background information for the AI to understand the topic and come up with a good answer.
Some quick tips:
  • The AI has been trained with data from many languages, but the amount of English text in the training material is much higher. It can be helpful to run queries in English and only then translate the output using tools like DeepL.
  • The AI processes up to 4,096 tokens in an input (≈ 4,000 words), any character beyond that is ignored without a message. A token is roughly equivalent to a word, depending on the use case.
  • The response generation can be stopped with the stop button above the input field if you notice that the AI is going in the wrong direction.
  • If too much knowledge has been exchanged during a chat, it may be helpful to start a new chat so that subsequent replies are not corrupted.
  • Although chatting with the AI sometimes feels almost human, polite phrases like “please” and “thank you” are unnecessary. The AI does not need eloquent instructions, just clear ones.
  • If you want to ask follow-up questions on the same topic in the AI, it’s best to keep the current conversation going. When you want to switch topics, hit the “New topic” button. This gives the model a clean slate — it won’t get confused and merge unrelated topics.
  • Use the right model for the right job. If you’re looking for stories, poems, jokes or other imaginative answers, use the “more creative” mode of the AI. But if you’re looking for just the facts, use the “more precise” mode. This will yield succinct and fact-based responses. “Balanced” mode is the default and works well for most scenarios.
General rules
  1. Construct an initial prompt. Create a simple, concise prompt to begin the process. This can be refined and expanded as needed.
Summarize the following news article:
  1. Evaluate and iterate. Assess the output generated by the AI in response to the initial prompt. Modify the prompt as necessary to improve the outcome. Iterate until the desired result is achieved.
Provide a concise, 3-sentence summary of the following news article:
  1. Provide a clear context. Providing context to the AI can each help in creating a more useful response. Context includes:
  • Background information
  • Specific Requirements
  • Constraints
Address potential ambiguity in your prompts by specifying the context or domain in which the AI should generate its response.
Assuming I am a beginner in the field of AI, explain the concept of deep learning and its applications.
Explain how neural networks are used in the context of natural language processing.
I have 3 years of experience as a software developer. Now I got bored with coding and want to transition to another career. My education qualifications are B. Tech in computer science, and I am well-versed in understanding the business side of software as well. Suggest a list of career options that are easy for me to transition.
  1. Set content boundaries. Establish clear boundaries for the content you want the AI to generate, specifying what should and should not be included.
Write a humorous, family-friendly story about a robot that learns to cook.
  1. Be specific. Omit needless words. When crafting a prompt for the AI, it's crucial to be specific, concise and clear about the information you want. Providing clear instructions helps the model generate accurate and relevant responses. Omit needless words for clearer, more effective communication with the AI.
Avoid using overly complex or ambiguous language and aim to be as specific as possible in your prompts.
Establish a clear purpose for the prompt. For instance, when summarizing a news article, the aim is to obtain a brief, informative overview.
Explain the difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Write a funny soccer story for kids that teaches the kid that persistence is key for success in the style of Rowling.
Provide a summary of [X], including its history, features, and configuration.
I am a 26-year-old female looking to lose 6 kg in 3 months. Create a 1700 calories Indian diet plan for two weeks. Do not give me non-vegetarian options on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. It should be a lean protein diet with carbs (30%), protein (40%), fiber (20%), and fat (10%).
  1. Keep focus and relevance. A well-defined prompt should have a clear purpose and focus, helping to guide the conversation and keep it on track. Avoid using overly broad or open-ended prompts, which can lead to disjointed or unfocused conversations.
Make sure that your prompts are relevant to the user and the conversation and maintain a consistent tone. Avoid introducing unrelated topics or tangents that can distract from the main focus of the conversation.
  1. Get Answers That Are More Than the Sum of Their Parts. Your answers can be seriously improved if you give the AI some ingredients to work with before asking for a response. They could be literal ingredients—suggest a dish from what's left in the fridge—or they could be anything else.
So don't just ask for a murder mystery scenario. Also list out the characters who are going to appear. Don't just ask for ideas of where to go in a city; specify the city you're going to, the types of places you want to see, and the people you'll have with you.
  1. Chained Prompting. Break up complex tasks into several intermediate steps, hoping the AI will generate a more concrete, customized, and better result. This works in a single long prompt as well as in several prompts in a row.
Probably the simplest form of chain prompting is to first ask for the structure of an article. Then you can tell the AI to formulate the corresponding bullet points. This method also saves time: If you notice that the AI is going down a wrong path during the outline, you can make the necessary adjustments before the full text is generated.
After the initial response, you may continue the chat to seek additional details asking for more information “Can you suggest other options?” or “Tell me more about X.”
Write an article about ChatGPT. First give me the outline, which consists of a headline, a teaser, and several subheadings.
[wait for output]
Now write five key messages for each subheading.
[wait for output]
Add five keywords to the key messages for each subheading.
[wait for output]
And so on …
  1. Chain of thought prompting or autodebugging. This is a variation on the chain prompting technique. Instead of splitting a task into smaller steps, in this approach the model response is instructed to proceed step-by-step and present all the steps involved. Doing so reduces the possibility of inaccuracy of outcomes and makes assessing the model response easier.
This type of prompt not only gives the AI context to use for completion, but also provides a “chain of thought” process that showcases how the correct answer to a question should be reached. This type of prompting elicits reasoning. It even improves arithmetical and logic results, something AI language models struggle with sometimes.
Use sentences like “Explain the process step by step”, “Think each step”, "Thinking backwards" or “Cite the reasons behind”.
You are an assistant designed to analyze sentiment from speech data. Users will paste in a string of text and you will respond with an assessment of the response of the speaker. Rate on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highest). Explain why this rating was given.
You will read a paragraph, and then issue queries to a search engine in order to fact-check it. Also explain the queries.
Who was the most decorated (maximum medals) individual athlete in the Olympic games that were held at Sydney? Take a step-by-step approach in your response, cite sources and give reasoning before sharing final answer in the below format: ANSWER is:
Classify and list down their various behaviors and cite the reason behind the classification, using the format BEHAVIOR("reason")
  1. Multi-step prompts. For complex queries, you can use multi-step prompts that break down the question into smaller parts. This helps the AI provide more comprehensive answers.
First, explain supervised learning. Second, describe unsupervised learning. Finally, discuss reinforcement learning and its applications.
  1. Zero-Shot Prompt. The most basic and straightforward prompt type there is. What the AI basically does is complete your prompt. That’s the whole magic. So a zero-shot prompt works like a simple question-answer mechanism. You don’t have to use a question, though. Any initial statement works. The AI model will always try to complete it.
Write a bunch of headlines for a blog post about space travel to Jupiter

Topic:
  1. One-Shot Prompt. These types of prompts provide the AI model with one example of what you expect the output to be. The basic steps are: 1) Give a quick explanation of what you need; 2) add a question-answer pair or a template as an example, and 3) let the AI take it from there.
Translate the following sentences to French. Example: 'The dog is playing in the garden.' -> 'Le chien joue dans le jardin.'
Translate: 'The cat is sitting on the mat.'
  1. Few-shot Prompt. The AI can intuitively generate plausible completions from few examples. The basic steps are: 1) Give a quick explanation of what you need; 2) add a few question-answer pairs or templates as an example.
This fine-tuning achieves better results on various tasks without requiring examples in the prompt, saving costs and enabling lower-latency requests.
Example Training Data:
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
{"prompt":"", "completion":""}
...
Learn the operator based on the following input/output pairs:
{"prompt":"2+2=", "completion":"22"}
{"prompt":"2+3=", "completion":"23"}
{"prompt":"40+2=", "completion":"402"}

Help me prepare for a podcast interview with . The topic we’ve agreed to discuss is the rise of Artificial Intelligence tools and services. Based on her most recent writing and podcasts, give me 10 questions I should anticipate.
  1. Ask for additional details. After the initial response, you may continue the chat to seek additional details. Encourage the AI to ask questions or provide feedback to keep the conversation interactive and engaging. While the AI is able to provide useful and relevant information, it can sometimes be helpful to encourage it to expand on its responses in order to provide more in-depth information or to delve into related topics. You can do this by asking follow-up questions or by providing additional context or examples to help guide the conversation. You might frequently ask for information, such as:
  • “How much do each of those cost?”
  • “Can you create a project calendar for this?”
  • “Can you suggest other options?”
  • Tell me more about X.”
  1. Space efficiency. AI models break words into “tokens”. While common multi-syllable words are often a single token, less common words are broken in syllables. Tokens can sometimes be counter-intuitive, as shown by the example below which demonstrates token boundaries for different date formats. In this case, spelling out the entire month is more space efficient than a fully numeric date. The current range of token support goes from 2000 tokens to up to 32,768 tokens.
tokenization results
Given this limited space, it is important to use it as efficiently as possible.
  • Tables –AI models can understand tabular formatted data quite easily. This can be a space efficient way to include data, rather than preceding every field with name (such as with JSON).
  • White Space – Consecutive whitespaces are treated as separate tokens which can be an easy way to waste space. Spaces preceding a word, on the other hand, are typically treated as part of the same token as the word. Carefully watch your usage of whitespace and don’t use punctuation when a space alone will do.
  1. Prompt self-criticism. The AI is already a useful tool for critiquing texts written by humans – so why shouldn’t this tactic be applicable to texts written by AI?
In line with this idea, the following strategy is divided into two steps: First, the AI should convincingly dissect the text piece by piece. Then, in a second prompt, get the AI to rewrite the text based on those very criticisms.
Critique the following text and convince myself why it is not good. Let’s think about the problems of the text step by step.
[Previous Output.]
Good points. Rewrite the text and improve it based on your critique.
[Output]
  1. Prime the output. This refers to including a few words or phrases at the end of the prompt to obtain a model response that follows the desired form. For example, using a cue such as “Here’s a bulleted list of key points:\n- ” can help make sure the output is formatted as a list of bullet points.
You are an AI assistant that helps people find information. Answer in as few words as possible.
John Smith is married to Lucy Smith. They have five kids, and he works as a software engineer at Microsoft. What search queries should I do to fact-check this? ## One possible search query is:
  1. Add clear syntax. Using clear syntax for your prompt—including punctuation, headings, and section markers—helps communicate intent and often makes outputs easier to parse.
In the following example, separators (--- in this case) have been added between different sources of information or steps. This allows the use of --- as a stopping condition for generation. In addition, section headings or special variables are presented in uppercase to differentiate them.
If you're not sure what syntax to use, consider using Markdown or XML. The models have been trained on a lot of web content in XML and Markdown which may provide better results.

All About Peas, Part Two
https://www.culina-vetus.de/2023/05/30/all-about-peas-part-two/
Continuing the Innsbruck MS’s pea recipes:
93 If you would make peas in jelly (gesultz arbais), also prepare them in this manner and boil them in honey, that way they turn out thick. Then cut them into slices, lay them in a bowl and pour sultz (aspic) over them and let it gel. Thus it does not fall apart (zerüert) and stays as it is.

Mashed peas shaped into fish and served in aspic. No, it's not really worth the trouble
94 If you wish, you can fill sheets (pleter) with it, but it is a little hard and falls apart easily etc.
95 If you would make a hollow roast (holpraten) of it, also prepare them in that manner and wrap (slach) them around a wooden spit that is as big as a rolling pin or bigger. Roast them and baste them with hot fat. Some say you should also pour honey on it so it will be stronger, and grated gingerbread (lezelten) should also be added to it, that way it is tastier and good etc.
96 If you would prepare a furhes of of peas, boil them so they do not become mushy (müsot) and (add) toasted gingerbread (geprant pfeffer prot) and pass them through with that. Grate gingerbread (lezelten) or bread into it. Take the toasted (verprünnen) bread and pound it very small and also add it, that way it becomes black. And take onions cut small and fry them (swais ab) in fat or oil. Add them, and honey, and season it and take hard bread like (as though for?) a hare’s head (hasen kopf) and add that, and do not oversalt it etc.
97 If you wish, you can make a chessboard of it. Only take of coloured pounded peas and put them in a bowl. You know how to divide them, and if you wish, press a particular coloured item (ein besunder gefert) on every part (i.e. field of the chessboard) with a mould.
These recipes, too, are quite interesting. Recipe #93 seems to be for peas in aspic, and we have a parallel for this in the Mittelniederdeutsches Kochbuch (recipe #37). Here, the peas are prepared with honey and flour and shaped into fish. The recipe here clearly refers to an aspic, as it very likely does in the Innsbruck MS. Using the same material as a filling for rolled-up dough sheets seems an odd idea, but #94 states it was done. It does suggest that the peas were strongly spiced, otherwise they would not complement the relatively bland dough well.
Recipe #95 is a riff on the roasted peas we find in so many of our sources, but here it is turned into a Hohlbraten, a hollow roast that could be filled with all manner of goodies. This cannot have been easy to pull off, but must have impressed diners considerably.
Recipe #96 is somewhat unclear. A fürhess is normally a dish of meat or, more rarely, fish that is thickened with blood. Here, dark toast and two types of gingerbread (lezelten and pfeffer brot) are added to cooked peas. We cannot reconstruct the distinction between the two, but there must have been one. Fried onions and honey, both commonly used in actual fürhess recipes, are also added. I suppose the idea is to produce a thick sauce similar in colour to cooked blood.
The final recipe #97 is also interesting. Mashed peas – presumably stiffened in some way to make them hold together better – are shaped into a chessboard decorated with moulded shapes in a different colour. Chessboards show up in other culinary media, too. This recipe is a reminder to us that a lot of complex and visually impressive work was done in more humble media than the marzipan and sugarpaste we usually asscoiate with medieval subtelties.
The Innsbrucker Rezeptbuch is a manuscript recipe collection from a South German/Austrian context. It dates to the mid-fifteenth century and survives as part of a set of medical and culinary texts bound together. The editor Doris Aichholzer published it together with two related manuscripts and drew attention to the less elaborate, more practical recipes. The manuscript is of unknown provenance, but has been owned by the Habsburg emperors since at least the early sixteenth century. It is now held at the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. An edition, German translation and commentary can be found in Doris Aichholzer: Wildu machen ayn guet essen… Drei mittelhochdeutsche Kochbücher, Peter Lang Verlag Berne et al. 1999

2023.05.30 20:30 TheDrungeonBlaster Gutterpunks Reloaded #7:100 Dead Nazis

-Red-
April 19th, 11:13 A.M., The Sprawl
I sparked a dilapidated Vita-Cig that I’d snagged from Trodes and peered out into the Sprawl; the careful equilibrium of a well-orchestrated black-market had returned; pushers and gangers lined the alleys, watching for signals from rooftop lookouts to avoid the single Peacewatch cruiser that had been stupid enough to enter the dockside. The poor bastard would be dead before the afternoon was over… not that I had much sympathy for his kind. Peacewatch made it a habit to stay out of the Sprawl: unless the Eggheads predictive crime system said something catastrophic was coming, they policed their kind and left us in the hands of the mob. I’d never iced an officer. Not yet at least.
“Your partner should be ready shortly, I think he’s just tying up a few loose ends,” Akari said, snatching the cigarette from my hand and taking a long drag.
“Remind me again why you think I should take the shrimp with me instead of Nico and Roman?”
“He’s smart… and the other two are working on something else. Besides-- you need brains on this one, Red, not muscle,” she giggled, passing the cigarette back.
“Whatever you say,” I paused, grabbing the smoke, “what do you have them up to?”
“There’s a shipment of Xeno-grade weapons coming down from the colonies. Nico and Roman will be liberating them from the Slicers. Or, their share, at least. It won’t be much, maybe a dozen guns, but it’ll be worth it: the force field tech alone will pay for the trip as soon as Fincetti’s goons start trying to take your heads off with plasma cannons and mono blades.”
“What do you mean, their share?”
“The job was too big for us to take on alone. I linked up with another enterprising group of Freelancers. If it goes well, maybe we can hire them on for the heist, we’re going to need more people if we want to walk out of there alive.”
We?
“What, are you planning on coming along now?” I asked, snuffing out the smoke.
“It only seems right; Trodes is coming along, and I’m a better shot than he’ll ever be. Besides, you have a dangerous habit of getting shot, and I can’t have you going down in the field,” she said, winking as if to punctuate the sentence.
“You sure? We can manage, you don’t have to come with us, you’ve done so much already.”
“I know I have, that’s why I have to protect my investment. If you go down out there, then the team is without a leader. A military scale operation like this will go south real fast without someone competent in command.”
“You’ve got me wrong, Akari: I’m no leader. I’m just someone who wants to live in a better city and doesn’t mind taking the trash out himself. Besides, why do we need a leader? We’re all competent adults acting in concert, of our own free will. We all know what we’re doing, if a situation arises and someone needs to take charge, it’ll happen.”
“You’ve got a lot of faith in a crew you just met,” Akari said with a sneer.
“You know why I asked you to put the team together, Akari?”
“Because there’s a bounty on your head that could finance twenty retirements, and you know you can trust me?”
“No, well yeah, but that’s beside the point—I asked you because you’re not a Fixer, you’re a part time street doc that works the front desk at the most popular Freelancer hotel in the Sprawl. If there’s anyone who knows who’s gonna get the job done, it’s you. See, a Fixer is going to be okay with whatever losses they deem acceptable beforehand, but they’re fine with keeping that to themselves. If you thought any of these mooks were going to crack under pressure, or do something stupid, you wouldn’t have set me up with them.”
Before she could respond, Trodes emerged from the stairs leading to the lab. He winced as the sunlight hit his eyes, shrugging on the hood of the oversized sweatshirt that blanketed his meek frame. Glimpses of pain showed through every tremor laden step he took. A cloak of wires enveloped his skull, feeding into an old-world cyber console.
“It’s insufferably hot out here,” Trodes sighed.
“Don’t worry, we’re not going far. Chances are that whatever hole we’re meeting BFU in will have air conditioning,” I responded, clicking my key fob, and signaling the bike to pull around.
Trodes face fell flat when the Supersonic rolled around the corner; apparently, the prestige of carving through the skyway on a state-of-the-art Taffington jet-bike was lost on him.
“Are we taking… that?” Trodes stammered.
“We are. Unless you’ve got a pair of wheels with two seats?” I asked, mounting the bike and revving the engine.
With an exasperated sigh, Trodes boarded the passenger seat. I could feel him behind me, vibrating as tremors gripped his body.
“You good, buddy?” I asked.
He nodded vigorously, clenching the handrails with white knuckles.
Akari shook her head and headed back to the lab.
I heard Trodes mumble something under his breath, but it was quickly drowned out by the jet-bike’s purr. I carved into the skyway. Driving in the Sprawl was pure freedom: almost nobody owned vehicles with aerial capabilities in this part of town. It didn’t take long to reach top speed.
Slummers and gutterpunks walked the streets like zombies in a drug addled haze. The scent of gunpowder, pollution and burning ozone coalesced into a putrid stench that reeked of poverty and violence. Patches of azure moved in militant formation below; the Vorrath had taken to the streets. On a different day, a better day, I would’ve helped them. Most slummers hated the Offworlder Coalition, but not me—at the end of the day I always figured that I had more in common with poor people from another planet than rich people from another district of the city. At least we shared the same struggle.
The bike slowed to crawl; the Neo-Confederates were about, backed by a platoon of Brown-Shirts that looked like a tide of sewer run off, crashing through the streets with reckless abandon. Civilians fled for their homes. Fuck.
The jet-bike careened through the air before finally landing atop a building a few blocks away from the impending conflict.
“Get off,” I said, turning back to Trodes.
“Why? You don’t intend to abandon me at this altitude, do you?”
“Not as long as I survive—I’ll be quick, I just need to ventilate some Nazi fucks, understood?”
He shook his head and muttered a string of curses.
I tore through the air, circling around the impending conflict. I chased a handful of cheap amphetamines with a poorly rolled joint and swooped low, behind the rolling tide of brown shirts. This wasn’t the first time I’d made myself an enemy of the city’s Neo-Nazi’s; I’d killed at least a dozen of them in my career as a courier, but those were isolated incidents, back-alley brawls away from the mob.
This was a whole new ball game.
I fell slack as my Teleoperations module synchronized with the bike. My consciousness faded, reemerging into the HALO-Net’s stylized rendition of the bike’s interior. I wasn’t just the pilot now—I was the bike. Bullets carved twin streaks of crimson into the brown tide. It didn’t take long to hit top speed, 3.7 seconds, to be exact.
The group turned in nearly perfect unison, launching volley upon volley as I passed overhead. The bike’s shields barely held together; I felt every round, like a flock of birds violently slamming into my side—not enough to cause any real damage, but more than enough to get the blood pumping. I slid into an alley a few blocks off and waited for the shield generator to recharge. Gunshots rang out from the streets, alongside the sizzle of plasma meeting flesh. Soon the din was drowned beneath the roar of dozens of Vorrath war cries. I took to the sky.
Trodes was exactly where I left him, nervously clutching a knock off version of a Locust flechette pistol.
“I was beginning to doubt your survival,” Trodes said shakily.
“Wrong again, little guy,” I paused, reigniting a half smoked joint, “it was just a quick hit and run, we don’t have the time or the numbers for a pitched battle. Now, hop on.”
It didn’t take long to find BFU’s base of operations. Black flags and Anarchist graffiti covered the walls of the abandoned warehouse they’d apparently taken up residence in. A field of repurposed Peacewatch turrets were installed atop the roof, complimented by a web of cameras that spread across a three-block radius. Anarchists of all species and creeds loitered outside. The guards ranged from Cyborgs and Vat-Grown, to Vorrath and Vorstihl, each wearing a variant of the black flag with colors corresponding to their ideologies.
As I hovered above the building, I saw a familiar face: the rookie from earlier. Alarmingly, his cruiser was nowhere to be seen. His face was wrought with horror, as a pair of cyborgs led him inside the warehouse.
“They’re certainly less than subtle,” Trodes said.
“They don’t have to be subtle, they’re the biggest citizens political organization in the Sprawl. Peacewatch avoids them if they have anything less than a full platoon on hand,” I explained.
“Red… before we enter negotiations with these hooligans, I must inquire as to what your motivation hitting the vault is? Surely you know there’s a strong likelihood that you won’t make it out, and from what I’d heard about you, I always understood you to be a man who knew how to keep himself out of the line of sight of dangerous people,” Trodes said, nervously.
“Fincetti is the most dangerous man in the city, short of O’Bannon. He controls the black market with an iron fist and is instrumental in all the things I hate about living here. The problem is, I have no way to do anything about it right now… but there’s something big in the safe—there must be—for fucks sake, he iced his family over it. I’m hoping there’s something in there that can give me a little leverage, so I can cross him out afterwards.”
Trodes was silent for a moment, simply reaching as if to ask me to pass the joint. I obliged.
“I have my reasons to want O’Bannon dead too, I’m in,” he paused as a coughing fit seized him, causing the joint to fall to the ground, “there’s something you should know though: I’m working with an entity of great power in the Net; I don’t know what precisely it is, but I know it saved my life more than once. As a matter of fact, it’s the only reason I was able to obtain the blueprint of Fincetti’s bunker, and his security plan.”
“Is it… is it an unshackled AI?”
“Unlikely: it seems to understand compassion and empathy on a uniquely organic level, something that rarely slips past Netwatch.”
“Alright, well whatever it is, you keep an eye on it and let me know if things get shady. I appreciate you telling me.”
Trodes nodded in silence.
The crowd parted expectantly as I landed along the streetside. Dozens of eyes were immediately glued to Trodes and I. A cyborg with a steel double mohawk emerged from a sea of leather, patches, and smoke. A sawed-off shotgun hung at his side.
“Red, I presume?” the Cyborg asked, extending a steel hand.
“That’s right, and who’re you?” I answered, clasping the borgs hand as firm as I could manage.
“They call me Diezel, and I’ll be your host today,” he released my hand and looked me up and down as if assessing whether I was a threat, “follow me, everyone’s here so we can get straight down to business.”
The warehouse’s interior had been renovated drastically; layers of open-faced lofts sat stacked upon each other, consuming the walls. Nearly every non-violent law in the city was being broken in the lofts, from cooking chems and explosives to studying banned literature and Doomguard martial arts. It was beautiful. We followed Diezel through a winding hallway of munitions manufacturing stations, before finally emerging into an immense circular room, with rows of seats climbing the walls. I couldn’t believe it—there must have been two hundred people present.
The lights dimmed as we entered the arena. Diezel led us to the rooms center, ushering Trodes and I onto a great circular platform; he fell into place on a platform across from us, beside a Vat-Grown woman bearing an orange and black flag on her arm, and augmentations that cost more than my bike. Behind the duo a bulbous Vorstihl lurked; tentacles draped down his back, carefully pulled away from his cyclopean eye. A red and black flag was displayed on his arm… it was only then that I noticed the blue and black flag on Diezel’s arm.
The platforms each rose roughly fifteen feet into the air, before microphone stands emerged from the center of each platform. Diezel stepped forward, past the microphone.
“Before we start, I’ll explain how this works: the three of us are representatives of our specific unions—but the people are free to interject. One union voting to aid in your endeavors does not guarantee the help of the other two, as each union demands a perfect consensus. Likewise, if a faction without one union decides to help you, it does not necessarily mean you have the support of the entire union. The only way you’ll end up with total support is cross union consensus. Do you understand?”
A consensus: of course, they needed a damned consensus.
“I do,” I answered, speaking away from the microphone.
“Then let’s get this show on the road,” Diezel stepped back, finding his microphone before continuing, “Red, Trodes, welcome to the Bouleuterion,” he paused a moment as the crowd erupted into cheers, “beside me are my comrades Aria and Korvirex, and we stand ready to hear your proposal.”
“As most of you probably know, Don Fincetti is the most powerful man in the underworld, hell—maybe even the city—what you likely don’t know is that he has a vault beneath the city, guarded by an army of Harvesters. I intend to break into the vault, slaughter the Harvesters and strike a blow to Fincetti that he won’t forget… and I intend to kill him shortly after. What I ask is simple: you help me in what’s to come, and when he’s finally dead, you can all split his turf among yourselves. All I care about is making sure he doesn’t live long enough to poison the Sprawl more than he already has.”
A murmur emerged from the stands. I gazed across the way to see the three representatives huddled together, whispering amongst themselves. Finally, Aria stepped towards her microphone.
“What you ask of us will likely mean the death of many of our people… we need something greater than what you offer—we need a guarantee of mutual aid—you have a reputation in the Sprawl, we would ask that you employ it in helping us when the time comes to resettle the Sprawl. Namely, we’d request your assistance against the gangs that may try to fill the power void you seek to create,” Aria explained.
“That seems reasonable,” I said.
Aria stepped back as Korvirex moved forward.
“Tell me, Red, are you familiar with the Offworlder Coalition?” Korvirex asked.
“I am—as a matter of fact, I aided them on the way here—they were marching against the Neo-Confederates and the Brown Shirts. I insured that they had the element of surprise.”
Korvirex stroked the beard-like tentacles that hung from his chin in contemplation.
“Good. What I ask is that you help us to secure their trust, we have offered solidarity where we could, but our forces are spread thin. The ideology of many of the exiled Vorrath rebels that found their way to Nova City—it matches that of our union. If our help was offered, would you agree to assist us in aiding the Coalition, so that they finally have an opportunity to get on their feet?”
Trodes leaned towards in, whispering in my ear.
“It would be prudent of you to make a counteroffer: proclaim that you’ll help with the Coalition, if they’ll spread the word to other groups whose goals may align with ours. There will likely be at least a couple hundred Harvesters in the Undercity when we strike… unless they’re occupied elsewhere.”
“I would happily help with the Coalition, on the condition that your faction spread the word about what we’re doing to like-minded organizations. As it stands, we could still use more numbers to match the Harvesters,” I said.
“These conditions may be satisfactory,” Korvirex said, before retreating into yet another group huddle.
The audience watched on in silence.
Finally, Diezel reapproached the microphone.
“The representatives have deemed this topic worthy of discussion: you’re free to leave, we’ll get ahold of Akari in a couple days, when all the details are ironed out.”
“A couple days?”
“Reaching a consensus can be a slow process at times—be prepared for a renegotiation of conditions, as there will likely be more stipulations made once the process is complete,” Diezel explained.
I nodded, and the platform beneath my feet began to descend towards the floor. The crowd erupted into cheers.
Hopefully Nico and Roman would beat us home.

-Red-
April 19th, 11:13 A.M., The Sprawl
2023.05.30 20:26 Glittering_Squash495 What injured Balerion?

From the Wiki:
[Balerion returned to King's Landing in 56 AC, descending into the courtyard of the Red Keep with Aerea barely clinging to him. The princess was severely ill, and died soon after. Barth's accounts describe wounds and half-healed scars on Balerion. The dragon bore a huge jagged rent down his left side, almost nine feet long, and fresh blood still dripped from the wound, hot and smoking.]
The leading theory is the one given in the book itself: that Balerion flew to his birthplace, Valyria, and thereupon was attacked by some horrible creature.
Aerea herself was severely Ill, with wriggling ‘fire worms’ moving under her skin, and causing her to cook from the inside. Ser Lucamore Strong reported that he could feel her fever through his armor.
Her last words were “I never”. I never what? I believe that she was going to say “I never left Dragonstone.”
There are many cities and outposts between Dragonstone and the ruins of Valyria. Somebody surely must have spotted Balerion if he did fly there. Aerea never left Dragonstone.
I believe that the horror lies below Dragonstone. The thing that caused the wounds on Balerion’s side? Dragon glass. When Balerion tried to make his lair beneath the Dragonmont, he was cut yo shreds by the obsidian mountain below. Aerea uncovered some species living in the depths.
In the modern story, a Tyrell/Redwyn siege has broken the walls of Dragonstone. Stannis’ men were already aware of the dragon glass, and had set to work on mining it at his command. Will the fire worms re-emerge?
Thoughts?
